I'm so very excited to talk to the person behind one of my fav accounts on instagram, @90svalley. Most of the time I feel like what they post is right on my wavelength at the time. We both love the erotic thriller movies of the 80s and 90s. Of course we had to get straight into our faves and what we think of where the genre is now and what it needs to do going forward. The topics of Sam Levinson, Gen Z and Millennials, and the directors that we love among tons of other things! Join Michelle and Liz today to talk about their top 5 favorite erotic thrillers! Basic Instinct, Mulholland Drive, Sliver, and more!
Ahh, the 90s. Such a perfect time for the erotic thriller genre. It only felt right to pay homage to one of the greats, James Spader. I stumbled across this one from deep in the vault and I'm glad to experience Dream Lover from 1993. I get into the mystery of why this wasn't a box office hit, the minimalist fashion, and bitch about why they just can't make 'em like this anymore. ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! There is much to discuss this week as Mark, Paul and I discuss Adrian Lyne's erotic thriller, 'Fatal Attraction'.
Get access to this entire episode as well as all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.Xuanlin Tham, author of the new book Revolutionary Desires: The Political Power of the Sex Scene returns to the show to discuss the Wachowskis' debut feature - the sharp, sexy sapphic neo-noir Bound. Emboldened by brilliant performances from its two leads Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly, the film is both an assured and nimble stylistic calling card for the future Matrix directors and a carefully studied lesbian romance, rendered in considered motif and visual flourish. We begin with an examination of the Wachowskis as filmmakers and how their work exists at a singular nexus of mass appeal and subversiveness. Then, we discuss the influence of feminist author and journalist Susie Bright, a key influence and collaborator on the film, and how she informed the Wachowskis' formal approach to formally conveying the slow burn of lesbian eroticism. Finally, we discuss the film's erotic sequences, how they transcend simple arousal, and what they tell us about the revolutionary capacity of sex and pleasure as a weapon against capitalism's confining homogeneity.Buy and read Xuanlin's book Revolutionary Desires: The Political Power of the Sex Scene at 404Ink.Read Xuanlin's Manifesto for the Modern Cinematic Sex Scene at AnOther.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish
PUBLIC VERSION. Writer/star Amanda Stern (THE INCOHERENTS, A BROOKLYN LOVE STORY) joins Joe to discuss her career journey and the making of her latest feature PERFECTLY GOOD MOMENT (available now on Tubi). From the way she approaches the mechanics of writing… to what it's like performing in an erotic story when her husband is one of the producers… to how she and director Lauren Greenhall started their collaboration… to a conversation abut the glorious, sometimes graphic work of porn-turned-music video-turned-horror director Gregory Dark… to their mutual favorite films in the erotic thriller genre… to what its like making a film in 10 days in sweltering NYC heat and how her critically acclaimed “erotic thriller with a twist” played to a crowd of older patrons on the festival circuit… Amanda shares her perspective on how to boldly succeed at independent story telling while holding on to your own unique voice.
This week we're jumping back into the work of Adrian Lyne! Does it count as cheating if it was an act of God? Is this the greatest McDonald's commercial ever? How book horny is Kit? Join the club and find out the answers as we discuss this beautiful Richard Gere/Diane Lane film.
There's nothing quite like a good erotic thriller. Copious amounts of murder, mystery, and, of course- sex. The only problem? They don't seem to exist anymore. This week we are joined by returning guest Ashley Casseday (Keep It Weird/The Losers Club)! For Garrett and Ashley this movie welcomed them into adulthood far too soon. Despite some initial apprehensions based on the discourse and reviews from trusted sources, we both found the film to be a stylish, funny, and intelligent examination of desire, kink, and the ways that the patriarchy suppresses and rejects expressions of female pleasure that are incongruent with the capitalist guardrails of our culture. We begin by discussing the film's nimble balancing of aesthetic impulses which heighten the proceeding's with a sense of hyperreality without sacrificing the story's emotional core. Then, we praise the magnetic work of Nicole Kidman, and the nuances of her performance and character: a high-powered woman caught in the ideological trap of patriarchy that grants her material success while demanding that she stifle her corporeal desires, judging them as aberrant, even wicked. Finally, we explore the film's thoughtful approach to the nature of sexuality and erotic experience, finding compelling layers of meaning and understanding often missing from today's films.Read Justine Peres Smith on Babygirl for Cult MTL.Read Jourdain Searles on Babygirl for the Los Angeles Review of Books.Pre-Order Xuanlin Tham's Revolutionary Desires from 404Ink.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Labyrinth is a cult classic. But how did things get to this point? We have contrasting memories of its initial popularity. And we both agree it is not the best work from any of the major players involved. Now that Robert Eggers is involved with the sequel, what does the future hold? What does it mean when a film is described as Lynchian? From what we can tell, the definition has changed over the years. The only reason we are even covering 2016's Always Shine is because the word often used to describe it is “Lynchian”. It does fit one definition of the term. Unfortunately, that is not necessarily a good thing. At a very base level, it sounds like Mulholland Drive. But this is more than a movie about two actresses in Los Angeles. In a way, it is almost the exact opposite of Lynch's film. We talk about the odd way it tries to build mystery and tension, the characters, and its abrupt ending. It is no surprise that we are covering a movie from the Sundance Film Festival. It will be shocking to some that we are reviewing a movie that features alien tentacle sex. Of course, if you are a long time listener, you know we have been down this path before. Will this time be as good as the first time around?Touch Me has a lot going on. Along with inter-species sex, there are themes of codependency, friendship, and trust. It is filled with funny moments and has some great performances. But when it gets dark, it gets really ugly. Do the jarring tonal changes make it impossible to enjoy it? Once in a while you stumble upon a movie that makes life worth living. This week on Erotic Thriller Club we're taking a trip back to New Orleans for Paul Schrader's Cat People. A sister reunites with her long lost brother and finds out not only is he a weird British guy by day but also a sex worker eating, leopard by night. Is this sexy Animorphs? What kind of meal do you eat before turning into a cat and murdering? We ask the big questions as we dissect one of the best movies we've ever seen.
What's cool, full of vibrant colors, gets pretty sexy but also is a bit annoying to the point where you question the integrity of the central relationship? That's probably Jim McBride's remake of the 1960 Nouvelle Vague classic À BOUT DE SOUFLE (in English): BREATHLESS.You might have thought: the most stringent of cinephiles would not touch a remake of this film with the longest of barge poles! It's a classic for a reason; however, this modern, pop-culture-filled, punky injection of 80's Neo-Noir cinema is much better than you might think. It takes some swings and hits most of them if you can get past the fact that Richard Gere's central character is one of the most annoying criminals in existence.Join us as we continue down an odyssey of appreciating Mr. Gere in all his fine glory from 1983.
With Speakergate gone (we hope) in the blink of a manually adjustable eye it's time for John to turn to one of his other favourite pastimes: cheekiness. Trying to get plugs past Producer Dave without him noticing, by increasingly layered and convoluted means? Count that checked and duly intervened on. Campaigning for the return of erotic movies? Tick, oh he's a cheeky scamp that one. And that saucy subject is one he seems to know more about than he perhaps should. In other goings on there's a logically watertight game which causes the usual ructions from the usual parties, and despite the lack of 35 minutes on sound systems there is a brutal time consuming neg from a listener that really derails the vibe.If you'd like to trash Elis and John as well then it's elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp.

With the Food Network program “Barefoot Contessa,” Ina Garten became a beloved household name. An essential element of her success is her confiding, authentic warmth—her encouragement for even the most novice home cook. Garten is “the real deal,” in the opinion of David Remnick, who has known her and her husband for many years. Although she is a gregarious teacher and presence on television, Garten prefers to do her actual cooking alone. “Cooking's hard for me. I mean, I do it a lot, but it's really hard and I just love having the space to concentrate on what I'm doing, so I make sure it comes out well,” she says. Garten joins Remnick to reflect on her early days in the kitchen, and to answer listener questions about holiday meals and more. Her latest book is “Be Ready When the Luck Happens,” a memoir. This segment originally aired on December 16, 2022.Plus, Alex Barasch picks three of the best erotic thrillers after being inspired to study the genre by his recent Profile of the director of the new film, “Babygirl.”

Audra and Raymond are back from an unintentional sabbatical to discuss Neo Noir films from the 1990s. Not to be confused with “Erotic Thrillers,” Neo Noirs echo the first wave of Film Noir in both content and style. Certain American crime thrillers of the ‘40s and ‘50s were dubbed Film Noir by French critics for their similarities: dark subject matter (usually crime mixed with fateful romance), anti-heroes with confused morals, and stylistic use of shadows and low-key lighting. These were often B-movies and almost certainly featured a Femme Fatale to lure the hero down a dark moral alley. Her appeal and danger stemmed from her empowerment. Neo Noir films are intentionally made in this model, dating 1960s to nowsville. In the period of 1989 to early 2001, Neo Noirs surged, paying homage to the classics yet everything was more extreme: explicit sex and violence, and new moral dilemmas with a heightened focus on urban decay and consumerism. Join us as we discuss Michael Man's HEAT (1995), the Wachowskis' BOUND (1996), and Curtis Hanson's L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (1997). Note: we recorded this a couple of months ago. Since then, Audra's wrist has healed and she's had time to fall down the James Ellroy rabbit hole.
For all of October Erotic Thriller Club is taking a look at some erotic horror movies and there's no better place to start than the 1995 Alyssa Milano flick Embrace of the Vampire! Ye old boob jobs! Door licking! How important are bass players?
This week on the Erotic Thriller Club we are taking a look at the Tony Scott/Kevin Costner film Revenge. With those 2 names attached it can't be that bad right? Is Kevin Costner Robin Williams levels of hairy? Is Mexico Jeep sex now on my bucketlist? Is this movie worse than Meridian? We're answering the big questions.

Ah, we're back. We're back in Scotland. I don't remember it being so "blue". Not only that, it's really dark, and moderately attractive men are acting like right twats to very attractive ladies. We're back on the "Ewan Train" with David Mackenzie's YOUNG ADAM. The "erotic" (?) drama about a bunch of folk on a barge and the lives Ewan McGregor's character basically ruins for the sake of creative inspiration. Yeah, doesn't make the most endearing of central characters but that's kinda the point. The one thing we did agree upon at least was the inclusion of custard. More custard, please! There's a bunch of sex in this but it's not as central as you'd think it would be. It just IS, so strap in, we've got a fair amount of stuff to talk about on this one.
This week on the Erotic Thriller Club Kit and Garrett have a hard time figuring out who is actually the villain in the 90's classic Single White Female. Bowl cuts, Stephen Tobolowsky, freeze frame penis, THE INCINERATOR ROOM??
David Lynch is one of our favorite directors. We talk about his recent announcements and look back on some of his films. The Babadook was one of the first horror movies to garner huge internet buzz. It was a “You gotta see this!” that had everyone talking. For its ten year anniversary it will be rereleased in theaters. Will it leave the same impression? We continue our look at sex and horror with a topic we have never discussed before. Both of this week's movies claim to deal with sadomasochism. One of them goes too far - but not in the ways you expect. The other does it in a way that makes you wonder why they even mentioned it was a part of the plot. The Surgeon from 2022 is about a performance artist that gets caught in a S & M love triangle. At least that is what the logline tells you. A better description would be an incomprehensible wanna be psychosexual thriller that throws everything at the audience whether it makes sense or not. Lots of pointless nudity, shocking twists that end up meaning nothing, and characters you will not be sure what to think are just part of one of the worst movies we have ever had on our humble little podcast.Black Eyed Susan makes much more sense. It is about a man who takes a job test a sex robot whose AI learns through punishment. It is a provocative film that never holds back. It also introduces themes that are important in today's society whether we want to think about them or not.The problem is it has good ideas it does nothing with. In a type of story that pretty much requires nudity, when is it too much? How strong of a point can you make when you are literally dehumanizing a character? When is a person so far down on their look you don't even care to look for them? Black Eyed Susan asks a lot of questions - and many of them are interesting, but do they overcome its glaring faults? This week on Erotic Thriller Club we are chatting Brian De Palma's homage to Hitchcock. Do some dogs go to hell? Would you star in a porno to solve the case? Do you believe in g-g-g-ghouls??
When we discussed an Emmanuelle movie earlier this year, we had no idea there was another one coming. And this one with a top flight notch cast. We also discuss Inside Out 2 crossing the $1 billion dollar mark at the box office and what it says about how we look at flops today. Though it probably will not make as much money, we are still excited about the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and its upcoming world premiere. We all already know the country has an awful choice to make. When your choice is senile old white man or crazy old man is their a point in even making one? The answer is yes. Re-Elected from 2020 is a horror movie that knows exactly what it is. A goofy, kind of dumb, but all around fun watch that is not supposed to be taken seriously. You would figure that a movie from this era involving dead presidents would have all sorts of social commentary. Re-Elected does not have one thing to say about what is going on in today's world and is better for it. For starters, this is not that type of movie. It's not that horror cannot say anything relevant; it has always been light years ahead of other genres when it comes to that. It is more about some films being all about just turning off your brain and enjoying what you see at the most visceral level.Cold Blows the Wind is an awesomely named indie horror movie that constantly punches above its weight. It is a microbudget affair that is so good that it allows anyone watching to focus on the plot and characters instead of the value of the production. Filled with great performances and writing, even some noticeable missteps do not take away from the enjoyment. We also talk about what is appropriate nudity. For years now, we have talked about how today's cinema seems to fear be sexy, erotic, or just plain naked. The rub is, when done right, nudity can add to a film, even when it an argument can be made that it was not completely necessary. But necessary and appropriate are two entirely different things. "You like to watch, watch this!" We watched "Sliver" from 1993 with our friend Adam Yeend and we're gonna start closing out blinds at night! Sharon Stone followed the breakout success of "Basic Instinct" (1992) with another Erotic Thriller - this time playing a much more grounded character. Listen, we love Catharine Tramell, but Stoney decided to switch things up and leave the murdering to the boys this time. William (Billy) Baldwin is giving us his best Alec impression right down to flashing those Baldwin Buns. And would it be a '90s Erotic Thriller without a soundtrack straight out of the Pure Moods catalog? Enigma even wrote "Carly's Song" specifically for this film but we would be remiss if we didn't mention the UB40 rendition of "(I Can't Help) Falling in Love with You" that was everywhere for the rest of the '90s. We also unpack the WILD alternate ending inside of a volcano (not making this up) as well as the shifting of certain plot points to allow the new ending to make sense. Did Hollywood try to recreate the lightning in a bottle of "Basic Instinct" with "Sliver"? Maybe. We still think "Sliver" is a lot of fun and definitely worth the revisit.
