Are you a dancer? What style is your favorite: ballroom, ballet, swing, breakdancing, or something else? Dancing is an expression of self; an artistic display of one's emotions without using words. Dancing is also a useful analogy for moving through life. (Gracefully, we hope!) Every aspect of movement is connected to your posture and therefore your back. In this podcast we discuss these connections and explore through a short exercise how you can begin to move differently in life by repositioning your body and your mind. It's the second week in 2021, are you back to normal yet? Of course not!! But at least I hope you are preparing yourself to be. This week's podcast is about teaching you to apply the posture techniques taught in our YouTube video last week titled “Fix Your Posture” (link to channel below for other videos too) so that you can focus better and be more efficient while you work, drive, or watch TV. (I don't imagine that last one requires much effort though...LOL) Those aches and pains you have are not going away anytime soon either if your posture isn't any good. So, follow the easy exercise in this podcast, keep practicing it, and you will be prepared for even more sitting (Yay! Not…), at least until this pandemic has passed. In Episode #11, we complete part two of our interview with Mina Larson, CEO of the National Certification Commission on Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) in Washington, DC. (www.nccaom.org) According to their website, the “NCCAOM is the only national organization that validates entry-level competency in the practice of Acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM) through professional certification.” In our interview with Mina, we asked questions about licensing, their national board exams, and questions that came directly from Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine students who participated in our survey. We are grateful to both Mina and the NCCAOM for allowing this special opportunity to look closely at what the organization is doing behind the scenes to support our growing profession. Thank you for listening! Across the world, people are going crazy staying inside their homes. People want to go out and live “normally” again, even if for just five minutes. Who can blame them? It is unnatural for us to stay indoors for so long, but the fact is, we have ALL been called to stay home. It is our duty as a caring citizen to think about the people around us in our communities. The health of the world is at stake, and we must all step up and work together. Please pass this important message on to as many people as possible. This new CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN series is designed to bring you a guiding voice during this uncertain time of the #coronavirus #pandemic. In this first episode, we focus on the one thing we all need right now; being a good leader. What kind of leader are you being right now in your home, in your workplace, and in your community? Are you driven by fear or have you stepped forward courageously and taken on the burden that others are not willing to? We must all remain focused and have a clear vision of caring for ourselves and the people around us. In this new series, I start by challenging you to become a leader for the people around you. Let us all lead by example, not by our emotions. If we can all learn to do this, then I am confident we will get through this pandemic faster and perhaps find ourselves stronger than we ever thought we could become. All of us are presented with opportunities in life that may allow for us to live the life we dream of, but we may not have our eyes open wide enough to recognize the opportunities before us. Regardless of you might have missed, that calling is gone, and in this podcast, I share with you WHY it is not important whether you “missed your calling” or not. For the title of this podcast is a serious question we should all ask ourselves. So, listen closely if you know what I mean! Thank you for listening to The Justin Flinner Podcast! Acupuncturists tend to focus on treating deficiency (or weaknesses) in their patients instead of excess. In this podcast, I describe the difference and break down the thinking of why you should focus on one versus the other. It is important for us to understand why an illness is taking place versus what exactly the patient presents with. Another idea that relates to this is treating the root cause rather than trying to “fix” the patient by tending to their current signs and symptoms. Try this new approach and let me know your results! I bet you'll be surprised! Thank you for listening to The Justin Flinner Podcast! In this audio version of the recent ASK THE EXPERT show, we interviewed Mina Larson, CEO of the National Certification Commission on Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) in Washington, DC. (www.nccaom.org) According to their website, the “NCCAOM is the only national organization that validates entry-level competency in the practice of Acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM) through professional certification.” In our interview with Mina, we asked her questions about the role of NCCAOM, their reason for moving back to DC from Jacksonville, FL and what they plan to achieve, as well as what the organization does for licensed acupuncturists. We are grateful to both Mina and the NCCAOM for allowing this special opportunity to look closely at what the organization is doing behind the scenes to support our growing profession. In this episode, we interviewed Ronni Abergel, the Founder and CEO of “The Human Library Organization” (https://humanlibrary.org/). Ronni started The Human Library 19 years ago with the goal of using conversation and dialogue to challenge our judgment and prejudice towards others. He has worked with companies across the world like #Microsoft, #Heineken, the International Monetary Fund (#IMF), and The World Bank (#worldbank) to name a few. The Human Library (#thehumanlibrary) allows the opportunity for everyday people to open their minds and hearts as "readers" of their fellow colleagues and neighbors with the intention of creating opportunity for, and understanding of, all by sparking the elimination of societal stigma and personal biases. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to interview Ronni Abergel in person. His friendly and playful approach to life is a true example of what it means to truly LIVE. A heartfelt thanks to Ronni and his amazing team for the tremendous opportunity not only for the interview but to become a book on the shelves of The Human Library. We are eager to hear more about what is next for The Human Library and participate in their upcoming events. My hope is that each of you will take the opportunity to become a reader or even a book at a local Human Library event near you. In a world that claims to be so connected, why do we feel so little connection with each other? Whatever happened to kindness, to caring for others, to respecting other people and treating them the way they deserve? This life has one certainty; that it will end. We are living here together, and my suggestion is to let go of any suffering you have experienced and start giving away the gifts you have to help change another person's life, and possibly yours in the process. How will you live today different than yesterday? How will you learn to reconnect with the people and the world around you? Connect with your loved ones, connects with those you despise in a new way. Connection is the only thing we have that holds us all together. Learn to reconnect by listening to this podcast first. Thank you for listening to The Justin Flinner Podcast. In part 4 of this series, we focus on a more mysterious substance that exists in Oriental Medicine; Jing or Essence. If you ever wanted to know where you get certain traits from within your family or how you have transformed into the human being you are today, this is the podcast that will bring you closer to those answers. The transformations every person goes through in life occur in somewhat predictable periods of time and have been a major focus of Oriental Medicine for thousands of years. Even more so, it has been an area of focus people have become interested in experimenting with to discover ways that could potentially lengthen one's life. Jing is a substance that is essential for human life and development, and therefore it is easily considered as one of the treasures of acupuncture. From elevators to singing in the shower, we often just go through the motions. When was the last time you expanded your comfort zone and did more stare at the elevator floor or hum in the shower? If we are unable to open ourselves up to the people around us, how will we be able to create new ways to be and allow for new opportunity in our lives? Going through the motions is an act of limitation. It holds you back from what you might think is possible. So, the next time you're in an elevator, say hello, then compliment the person somehow. The next time you're in the shower singing, belt it out! Let the neighboring houses hear you! Routine is only meant to be routine for a certain period in your life; just like health and illness. Regret is not a word anyone likes to hear let alone relate it to something in their lives. Because of our busy natures we rarely stop to smell the flowers as people say. We take for granted the moments that pass us by until we are no longer busy anymore leaving us with time to catch up on the things we've missed. This is an absurd way of going through life; watching everything pass by. Instead, we should be creating new memories and setting about on new journeys. We must remember it is ok to put down the heavy aspects of our lives and enjoy feeling light-hearted once again. So, I wish that this podcast serves as a reminder for you to do just this. Our lives are built on the stories we tell one another, and our stories are alive. They keep us alive too. The lessons that every story contains depends on what you learn along the way. Each generation that came before us heard stories that gave them a reason to move on in the life with a sense of purpose. And each generation that will come after us will live their lives based on the stories that our lives have to teach them. How we live our lives will determine how interesting and how rich in wisdom our stories of life will be for the children later on. We must live each day with the intention of writing a new and better story than the day before. It must be filled with lessons of how to overcome challenges and lesson of how to enjoy the subtle moments in life. The stories we tell will shape the future of our loved ones and the future of the world we live in and will one day leave. Remember this when someone is telling a story about you so that you will feel proud and satisfied that you have changed the life of another. We have all said the phrase "you are what you eat", but have we thought about the opposite; "you eat what you are"? Nutrition goes way beyond just understanding carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. We must understand the nature of the food we eat and what it is capable of based on its own energetic. We must also learn to create a peak state within ourselves and use food to further nourish this state to allow us to continuously thrive here! It only takes 90 seconds for us to experience an emotion physiologically. After that, we make a choice, an important choice! The decision of what emotional state we will be in defines the quality of each moment we will experience. Choose upset? You'll stay there (and hate it!). Choose happiness? You'll stay there (and love it!). When we are able to take ownership of and responsibility for our emotions and what comes after them, then we have made the decision to empower ourselves to live a life that we control. Never let other individuals determine who you will be and how you will be. We all possess the power to choose the state of mind and the state of being we will live in. Consider this a reminder for you to do exactly that.
