Summer School: Mel Robbins on Anxiety, Action, and the 5-Second Rule

The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show

Hey friends, Chase here. Every summer, I revisit conversations from the archive that have stood the test of time. Not because I'm nostalgic, but because the best ideas don't expire. They deepen. This is another installment of Summer School—episodes I personally went back to this year when I was stuck. This one with Mel Robbins is near the top of that list. At 41, Mel was unemployed, drowning in debt, and so overwhelmed she could barely get out of bed. Then she discovered something that sounds almost too simple to take seriously: the 5-Second Rule. Count backwards—5-4-3-2-1—and move before your brain talks you out of it. This conversation was recorded roughly eight years ago, well before Mel hit the stratospheric pace the world knows her for now. A mutual friend introduced us. We sat down in the CreativeLive studios. She taught a barnstormer of a class. And the episode stuck with me—because when doubt, delay, and inertia show up, this is the kind of hardcore, no-B.S. toolkit that actually helps you move. Mel calls herself the fucked-up friend who figured some things out and got wise. She doesn't want you to make the same mistakes. She's done the hard work on habit, confidence, self-doubt, and how anxiety becomes a habit that robs you of joy, money, connection, and power. You're one decision away from a totally different life. Summer School: Mel Robbins on Anxiety, Action, and the 5-Second Rule Mel's path wasn't linear. Temp job. Law school by inertia. Public defender in Manhattan. A law firm she hated. Postpartum depression. A decision at her own baby shower that she would never again answer "What do you do?" with "I'm a lawyer." Then radio, media, CNN, speaking—and a TED Talk that accidentally let the 5-Second Rule slip out as an afterthought. She didn't invent the rule as a brand strategy. She invented it in 2008 to beat the snooze button when her life was falling apart: failing restaurant business, financial strain, marriage on the ropes, kids missing the bus, no confidence left in the tank. What makes this episode Summer School material is how practical it is. Mel doesn't just diagnose stuckness. She hands you a tool for the five-second windows where hesitation usually wins—and then she zooms out to the deeper question: action only matters if you know what you want. Passion, she says, is another word for energy. Follow what energizes and expands you. Master the little stuff first, or you'll never answer the big stuff. If you've ever known exactly what to do and still couldn't make yourself do it, this conversation is for you. What You'll Hear in This Episode Why Mel's whole life felt like "one gigantic mistake" she then scrambled—using anxiety—to fix How high tolerance for "suckiness" keeps us trapped until a shock finally forces change An unflinching conversation about anxiety and panic, self-monitoring, and getting help when you need it Why "you don't have to think the way you think"—and how worry becomes a habit that costs you money, health, and relationships The 5-Second Rule explained: how counting backwards interrupts habit loops and kicks the prefrontal cortex online How one decision (just getting out of bed) can change how you see yourself—and start momentum that rebuilds a life Why knowledge can be a trap if you never acquire the tools to make yourself act Listening to your gut—including Mel's decision to keep audio rights when she self-published How to define what you want by tracking what energizes vs. depletes you Why mastering the little stuff is the only path to the big stuff—and why there's enough success for everybody The 5-Second Rule (and Why It Works) Mel is blunt: the rule sounds profoundly stupid. That's why it took people a while to take it seriously. Here's the move. The moment you catch yourself hesitating, doubting, worrying, chickening out, shrinking, or shutting up—count backwards: 5-4-3-2-1. Then move. Counting backwards interrupts habit loops encoded in the more automatic parts of the brain and lights up the prefrontal cortex—the part involved in focus, courage, strategic thinking, and learning new behavior. Counting up doesn't work the same way; you can keep going forever. After one, your mind is socialized to go. She discovered it by accident trying to stop hitting snooze. Eight years later (at the time of this recording), she still used it every morning to get out of bed—and for exercise, tough conversations, client scope creep, drinking urges, tone of voice, middle-of-the-night bathroom trips, negotiations, everything. The deeper point: your life happens in five-second windows. In five seconds you can control what you think, decide what you'll do, and change something that then changes everything. And you're often one decision away from a different life—not because that one decision is magic, but because action changes how you see yourself. Get up three mornings in a row when you usually don't, and you're no longer only the person who sleeps in. You're someone who can keep a promise to yourself. That identity shift compounds. Mel's clearest line on the real problem: most people aren't missing strategy. They're missing the action push. You know how to lose the weight, grow the business, save the marriage, make the call. You can't make yourself do it. The 5-Second Rule is a starting ritual for becoming that person for yourself—your own pushy best friend. What Do You Actually Want? Tools without direction become busywork. Mel keeps returning to this: using 5-4-3-2-1 for its own sake isn't enough if you don't know what you're aligning toward. The common mistake: we fixate on some huge person, place, or thing—a unicorn future that's supposed to rescue us from our current misery. The gap between here and there makes us feel more lost. Her emerging tool (she was still researching it then): treat passion as energy. In any situation, notice within five seconds—does this person, project, or choice energize me or deplete me? Expand me or shrink me? That body wisdom is the map. Hard things can still energize you. Easy things can deplete you. Money comes second. The question is: if it depletes you, how do you move it or say no? If it energizes you, how do you do more of it? Mel noticed even her exploding speaking career started depleting her on travel mornings—while meeting people and answering emails energized her. So she recalibrated toward what expanded her. One five-second alignment at a time, working with your wiring instead of against it. Her hard truth: if you can't master the little stuff—getting up, exercising, curbing the habit, making the scary call—you will never answer the big stuff of who you are and how to listen to yourself. Achievement without fulfillment is just checking boxes forever. And once you're in your lane—energized, expanded—you have capacity to be generous. There's enough success and happiness for everybody. Cheer for other people. Stay calibrated against your own energy map when the internet keeps showing you everyone else's game. Timecodes So You Can Jump Around 00:00 – Welcome and why this episode is part of Summer School 03:27 – Mel joins; early career, inertia, and a high tolerance for suckiness 13:54 – Postpartum depression, quitting law, and making a hard decision 18:00+ – Anxiety, panic, self-monitoring, and getting help when you need it 31:37 – Introducing the 5-Second Rule 38:38 – Where Mel's life was when she invented it—and how one decision changes everything 44:15 – Ego vs. values: self-publishing, bestseller lists, and keeping audio rights 51:16 – How to define what you want (and the trap of the unicorn goal) 53:47 – Passion as energy: the deplete-vs-energize decision tool 58:35 – Master the little stuff or you'll never get the big stuff 01:00:55 – Generosity, staying in your lane, and enough success for everyone 01:04:11 – Diversity in personal development, getting attacked, and pushing through fear Why This Conversation Still Matters We are drowning in information about what to do. Strategy is everywhere. Inspiration is infinite. The bottleneck is still the same: the five seconds between knowing and doing. Anxiety culture hasn't gotten quieter since this episode aired. Comparison hasn't gotten kinder. The gap between the life you want and the inertia you're in still grows when you wait to feel ready. Mel's toolkit remains useful because it's not about becoming fearless. It's about interrupting hesitation long enough to act—and then aiming that action at what actually expands you. Feel the fear. Count backwards. Move. Check your energy. Repeat. That's why I keep returning to this one when I'm stuck. Not for a pep talk. For a push. Keep Going Deeper If this conversation resonates: The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins Mel online: melrobbins.com Follow Mel: Instagram | X/Twitter | Facebook | Website Questions to Reflect On Where do I already know what to do—but keep failing at the action push? What five-second hesitation keeps showing up in my work, health, or relationships? Am I waiting to feel ready before I move? Where has "acquiring knowledge" become a substitute for doing the thing? On my client list, calendar, and inner circle: what energizes me vs. depletes me? What little stuff am I avoiding that is blocking the bigger answers about who I am? Where could generosity replace scarcity—cheering for others while staying in my lane? The Core Idea You don't need a new identity overnight. You need one decision, then another, in the five-second windows where your brain tries to shrink you. Mel's invitation is brutally simple: stop waiting for motivation to arrive fully formed. Interrupt the habit. Count backwards. Move. Align with what energizes you. Build confidence from evidence, not affirmations. And remember—there's enough room for everybody. If there's one lesson worth carrying forward from this Summer School session, it's this: You're one decision away from a totally different life—and that decision can start in the next five seconds.

William Cooper explains his “60-second rule,” a strategy for building consistent habits by making the minimum commitment so small that it avoids feelings of resistance or discomfort. Drawing on principles from behavioral psychology, he argues that negative reinforcement causes people to abandon activities like exercise, meditation, or yoga. So, eliminate negative reinforcement, while keeping the experience positive encourages long-term consistency. He shares how committing to just 60 seconds of daily exercise helped him develop a decades-long habit, often leading him to do more once he got started. He recommends choosing a minimum that feels easy even on the hardest days.  Consistent daily practice is so important because it compounds over time.  He also suggests applying this gradual approach to processing difficult emotions and spiritual practices, increasing the time only when it continues to feel manageable. These podcasts are meant to supplement your personal path of awakening whatever that might be. They are a compilation of what I have found to be the most helpful over the last 50 years on my path of awakening. I feel these podcasts are most powerful when listened to in sequence from podcast one forward because each is built on the last.  Though they, also, all stand on their own.  Since we are each a bit different, if anything does not resonate, please disregard it and follow your heart. Send us Fan MailAI is moving faster than most organizations can govern, and that gap is where the real danger lives. From Omaha, I sit down with Naresh Samlal, CEO of Cloud Source, to talk about the side of AI that rarely makes headlines: what happens when employees upload sensitive files into public AI tools, vendors promise the moon, and leadership is left trying to protect data they can no longer see.We break down why AI supercharges both innovation and cybersecurity risk, especially for regulated industries like healthcare, legal, and financial services. Naresh shares what he's seeing from customers who love the productivity boost but fear giving away their “data gold,” and we explore a different model: bringing AI to your data in a private cloud so it stays containerized, controlled, and governed. We also talk about why the market is shifting back toward privatizing data, how small language models fit into that trend, and what practical guardrails need to exist before you scale anything. Then we go one level deeper into agentic AI. Automation can look perfect on Monday and turn into a mess by Friday if you trust it blindly. Naresh lays out a simple governance reality check: if you can't shut it down in 60 seconds or less, you've got a governance problem. If you care about AI security, private cloud strategy, managed services, and protecting intellectual property while still moving fast, this conversation will sharpen how you think and how you lead. You know what a five-minute task looks like when a kid doesn't want to do it? An hour-long standoff. Socks on the floor. Full dramatic collapse. And the worst part is, that kid is also missing out on the thing they actually wanted to do — playtime they could have been having — because now they're in a battle that didn't need to happen.Sound familiar? Because I do it too. Not on the floor, not with the socks, but the mechanism is exactly the same. And that's what this episode is about.Avoidance Isn't Free. We think of avoidance as a break — a little breathing room before we tackle the hard thing. But what's actually happening is we're adding every undone task to a mental backpack we carry through the entire day. The gym you meant to hit. The email you're dreading. The bill you keep not looking at. Each one is a background process running in your brain, quietly draining your energy and your focus, popping up with mild guilt every time it surfaces. Two Versions of Your Day. I walk through what it actually looks like to compare the day where you do the planned thing first versus the day where you negotiate with yourself until 10pm. The first version is done and forgotten in 30 minutes. The second version haunts you all day and you probably still don't do the thing. The ADHD Layer. For those of us with ADHD, this pattern can run deeper — the executive function piece makes it genuinely harder to initiate tasks even when we want to do them. This isn't laziness. But understanding the pattern is still the first step whether or not ADHD is part of your picture.Mel Robbins and the 5-Second Rule. I'm not here to reinvent something that's already been figured out. Mel Robbins cracked this one open with a beautifully simple move: when you feel the impulse to act, count backwards from five and go before your brain builds a case against it. It interrupts the internal committee meeting before the agenda even gets distributed.Three Concrete Moves. Name it (you can't change what you don't see), shrink it (the first 30 seconds of a task, not the whole thing), and do the countdown. That's it. You're not building a system. You're just deciding not to sit on the floor. The real payoff isn't productivity for its own sake. It's the rest you've actually earned at the end of a day where you did the thing you said you were going to do.Jill's Linkshttp://jillfromthenorthwoods.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepshttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/startwithsmallstepshttps://twitter.com/schmernEmail the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.comBy choosing to watch this video or listen to this podcast, you acknowledge that you are doing so of your own free will. Send us Fan MailNonprofit marketing strategy using neuroscience can help organizations create messages that earn attention, build trust, and move donors toward engagement. Sally Mildren, CEO and Chief Strategist of CommonWell Marketing, shares why effective nonprofit marketing starts with how the human brain filters, feels, trusts, and decides. For nonprofit leaders working with limited time, staff, and budgets, this conversation offers a sharper way to think about marketing performance. Sally explains that the brain is processing millions of bits of information every second, which means nonprofits have only a brief window to become relevant. As she puts it, “You have two to 8 seconds to make yourself relevant before the brain decides this isn't for me.”That reality changes how organizations should approach email subject lines, social posts, fundraising appeals, web copy, and donor communications. Instead of starting with the organization's name, logo, or internal priorities, Sally encourages nonprofits to lead with the audience's need, emotion, and sense of recognition. The episode also challenges the common habit of trying to reach everyone with the same message. Sally makes the business case for segmentation, saying, “One-size-fits-all messaging cannot work in today's attention economy.” For nonprofits, that means stronger donor engagement often comes from being brave enough to focus on the right audience, not the largest audience.Sally also digs into trust, consistency, recognition versus representation, and the danger of message overload. Nonprofits often try to say everything at once — every program, every giving option, every reason to care. But the brain can only absorb so much. A simpler message, repeated consistently across channels, can build familiarity, safety, and confidence. This is a master class for nonprofit executives, fundraisers, marketers, board members, and communicators who want their messaging to work harder without shouting louder. The lesson is clear: marketing is not just about visibility. It is about relevance, trust, clarity, and alignment with mission. 00:00:00 Welcome: The Neuroscience of Donor Giving and Marketing 00:01:39 Meet Sally Mildren of CommonWell Marketing 00:03:01 The 2-to-8 Second Rule for Nonprofit Messaging 00:05:28 Why Email Subject Lines Still Matter 00:06:37 Emotion Comes Before Logic in Donor Decisions 00:08:47 Why One-Size-Fits-All Messaging Fails 00:11:12 The Courage to Stop Marketing to Everyone 00:12:32 Trust, Safety, and the Donor Brain 00:16:56 Recognition vs. Representation in Marketing 00:19:27 Finding the Right Audience Instead of Chasing Everyone 00:21:44 Start With Mission Before Choosing the Message 00:25:49 Why Simpler Messages Drive Better Decisions #TheNonprofitShow #NonprofitMarketing #DonorEngagementFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us  Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits!  12:30pm ET   11:30am CT  10:30am MT  9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

It's a lesson that applies just as powerfully to the young optometrist stepping into their first associateship as it does to a kid knocking on strangers' doors.Whether you're a clinician dreaming of something beyond the lane, a practice owner looking for perspective, or someone who simply needs a reminder that reinvention is always on the table, this episode will leave you inspired. In episode 610 of the Lawyerist Podcast, Zack Glaser sits down with Karin Conroy to unpack why so many law firm websites fail to convert and why AI is making the problem worse.  Karin explains why copycat marketing has always been ineffective, and how the rise of AI generated content is accelerating a wave of sameness across legal websites. As tools make it easier than ever to produce content quickly, the firms that stand out are not the ones moving faster, they are the ones thinking more strategically about differentiation, trust, and positioning.  The conversation explores what actually matters on a modern law firm website, from messaging that resonates in seconds to branding that signals credibility to both humans and algorithms. Zack and Karin also break down where AI fits into a smart marketing strategy and where it quietly undermines it.  If your website looks good but is not bringing in clients, this episode will help you rethink what “working” really means.  Listen to our previous episodes on law firm marketing with Karin Conroy:    #603: Turn Expertise into Clients: Building Authority That AI Recognizes, with Karin Conroy Apple | Spotify | LTN  #584: How to Stay Human in the Age of AI-driven Law Firm Marketing, with Creative Conroy Apple | Spotify | LTN   #559: The Imitation Trap: Lessons from 15 Years of Top Law Firm Websites , with Conroy Creative Counsel (Sponsored) Apple | Spotify | LTN    #546: Unlock Law Firm Growth: AI marketing Secrets with Karin Conroy Apple | Spotify | LTN  Links from the episode:  https://www.conroycreativecounsel.com/lawyerist/ Have thoughts about today's episode? What's Silently Killing Growth: The 2-Second Rule That's Destroying Your Website Traffic

Most websites are bleeding traffic before visitors even see the page… and Google Analytics can't tell you it's happening. Pantheon's data shows that if your site takes longer than 2 seconds to load, users swipe away before your page even renders. The magic number is now under 1 second, and mobile users expect websites to feel identical to opening an app. Josh Koenig (Co-Founder and SVP of Marketing at Pantheon) reveals what's silently killing growth: the brutal shift in user expectations, how AI crawlers swarm websites like "denial of service attacks" on UFC fight nights, and why companies need to structure content for LLMs as "research assistants." He breaks down the 5 evergreen SEO tactics that still work—question/answer formats, schema markup, Reddit engagement, strong brand voice, and ungating content—plus why chasing AI micro-trends is risky. From understanding what data Google Analytics can't see to learning why gated content is dying in the LLM era, this is the framework for building websites that survive both human impatience and AI crawler swarms. If you're still optimizing for 5-second load times or seeing unexplained traffic drops despite good rankings, this shows you exactly what's broken.   Chapters: 00:00 - Page Speed's Silent Kill (Bounce Before Load) 02:10 - The Magic Numbers (1 Second Good, 2 Seconds Dead) 04:04 - AI Crawlers Swarming Sites (UFC Fight Night Case) 08:54 - Five Evergreen Rules for the LLM Era ----Mission.org is a media studio producing content alongside world-class clients. Ep 2867 Is Your Post-Season Conditioning Building "Game-Specific Gas" or Just Empty Miles?

Basketball Coach Unplugged ( A Basketball Coaching Podcast)

https://teachhoops.com/ Post-season conditioning is a high-stakes balancing act: you need your players at peak physical fitness, but you cannot afford to "burn them out" before the championship rounds. Traditional "distance running" or repetitive "liners" are often counterproductive this late in the year because they build aerobic capacity at the expense of explosive power and lateral quickness. To "win" the post-season, your conditioning must be "Sport-Specific" and "High-Intensity Interval" ($HIIT$) based. This means your players should be conditioning in the same metabolic windows they experience in a game—short, 5-to-20 second bursts of maximum effort followed by incomplete recovery. To bridge the gap between "being in shape" and "being in basketball shape," you must implement "Tactical Conditioning." Instead of running sprints to a whistle, run your "Full-Court Press" or "Fast-Break" drills at a tempo that exceeds game speed. This allows you to "hide" the conditioning within the coaching. Use the "30-Second Rule": any conditioning segment should be followed by a "Mental Task"—like shooting a free throw or executing a late-game out-of-bounds play—while the heart rate is still elevated. In the post-season, games are lost when players "check out" mentally because they are physically gassed. By "stacking" physical fatigue with cognitive demands, you build the Performance Poise required to execute under pressure. Finally, you must prioritize "Recovery as a Weapon." A fatigued muscle is a slow muscle, and a slow muscle leads to defensive breakdowns and "flat" jumpers. In your post-season script, monitor the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio ($ACWR$) of your starters. If they played 30 minutes on Tuesday, Wednesday's practice should focus on "Tactical Refinement" rather than "Physical Pounding." Utilize "Isometric Holds" and "Dynamic Flexibility" to maintain strength without adding "impact stress" to their joints. Use your TeachHoops member calls to "audit" your taper: are you ramping up the intensity while scaling back the volume? By entering the tournament "fresh" rather than "fried," you give your team a significant physiological advantage over opponents who are still grinding through heavy conditioning sessions.
