In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger, FCAH, RBHT, speaks with Autumn Bear about her experience treating long Covid patients, exploring the multifaceted symptoms they face and the holistic approaches that can support recovery beyond traditional Western medicine. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/autumn-bear Highlights from today's episode include: Autumn Bear Because these are the things that seem to irritate the body the most, gluten, dairy, soy, alcohol and sugar, those guys across the board, seem to be the biggest irritants. They cause the most inflammation, and they're the first ones, you know, if someone is developing some sort of food sensitivity, that's usually the place I like to start. Autumn Bear So when we're looking at disease, we're really trying to figure out, where did this, you know, dysbiosis or imbalance start, and how do we really treat the root so that all the branches of that tree essentially start to heal themselves as a result of treating the root. Autumn Bear Oftentimes, patients are saying, Listen, I'm having all these things. These are happening to me, and ultimately, what they're getting is doctors that are saying, Well, I think you just have anxiety, so I want to put you on Xanax and that's so it's just frustrating and debilitating. ABOUT AUTUMN BEAR Bio : Autumn Bear M.S., L.AC, DIPL AC My formal training in classical Chinese medicine was transmitted directly to me by the esteemed Taoist master and 88th generation practitioner Jeffrey C. Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of The Chai on Life Podcast. I'm Alex Segal, and today we are speaking with Miriam Pineles, a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine practicing in Cedarhurst, NY.Miriam is someone who really heals from the inside out. I met Miriam almost five years ago now when I was pregnant with my first son and experiencing really horrible back pain in my third trimester. Miriam healed me in one week. I couldn't believe it. Honestly, before going to her, I was skeptical about acupuncture and had no interest in it but afterward I was completely sold and talking about it to everyone I knew.Throughout the last few years though, I've learned that it wasn't just the acupuncture or the healing techniques she used, it was Miriam herself. She is meant to be a healer. She is someone that holds space for so many individuals and when you're with her, she makes you feel like you are the only person that matters. In addition to her clinical practice, Miriam teaches “Living With The Elements,” a course she created to help women gain deeper self-awareness and foster harmony in their relationships and homes. If you want to learn more and sign up (it starts September 9!) you can do so at livingwiththeelements.com.In this interview, we speak more about the course she created and what you will get out of it as well as:-How she got into Chinese medicine and how it's deeply connected to Torah and Kabbalah-What is going on under the surface when you're getting acupuncture or Chinese medicine treatments and why they work-Where a lot of unhappiness and disease stem from-How we may be passing unresolved trauma and issues onto our kids — and how you can stop that-What the five elements of Chinese medicine are and how they connect to Judaism-We go through each element and learn a little bit more about what each one means-What the framework of seeing yourself and child through the elements can do for your parenting-Practical parenting takeaways you can start today…and SO MUCH MORE!More about Miriam:Miriam Pineles, DACM, is the founder of Conscious Health and Wellness, Inc., a premier Chinese medicine clinic located in Cedarhurst, NY. With a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine (DACM) and certification from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), Miriam is also licensed in Acupuncture by the State of New York. Her extensive training includes mentorship under some of the most revered practitioners both in the United States and internationally. Miriam has mastered unique techniques in acupuncture, pulse analysis, and herbal prescription, specializing in women's perinatal health and addressing syndromes arising from emotional trauma. She also founded *Ayin Healing*, a non-profit organization dedicated to running holistic healing retreats that support Jewish women recovering from childhood sexual abuse.Explore more about Miriam's work at:• [Conscious Health and Wellness](http://www.Conscioushealthandwellness.com)• [Living With The Elements](http://www.livingwiththeelements.com)• [Ayin Healing](http://www.ayinhealing.com)You can also learn more about Miriam on the Chai on Life website here.If you enjoyed this episode, leave a rating and review so more people can gain from Miriam's wisdom. Dr. Amanda Tieu states, "Acupuncture has little to no risk and helps with pain, stress, and inflammation." She's seen many success stories, from helping couples with infertility to injured veterans who've tried everything for pain. In the case of Dr. Tieu's Army veteran patient, his Dr. suggested acupuncture as a last-ditch effort to try before getting surgery; spoiler alert, the veteran had so much success with acupuncture and pain management that he skipped the surgery! Dr. Tieu also discussed how acupuncture can inhibit the signals from the brain that are screaming, PAIN! It can block pain signals and turn down inflammation. I've had great success in using acupuncture to manage pain. I broke my leg snow skiing twenty-five years ago and didn't have the resources to get it fixed using surgery (I didn't have good health insurance, owned a business, and couldn't afford to take time off). I used acupuncture for pain management and inflammation. Fast forward to today, and I've trained for and completed five half marathons and surf five days a week. I can tell you that my experience with acupuncture has been nothing but positive! Dr. Tieu received her Doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine, Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and License in Massage Therapy at Bastyr University. She is board certified by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE) and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She has participated in local nonprofit organizations that sought to provide care to underserved patients, focused on acute injuries and post-recovery treatments of athletes at Bastyr's Sports Medicine Club, and volunteered as a clinical care member at her local hospital. Dr. Tieu believes in providing quality patient care through an integrative medical approach. She is passionate about bringing sustainable changes to a patient's overall health. Her current areas of interest are primary care, pain management, and dermatology. I love using Bison! It's very nutrient dense and contains conjugated linoleic acid (I know, what the heck does that mean?), which means Bison has anti-inflammatory properties. Here are the other reasons why I love using Bison in place of ground beef: Higher amounts of omega three fatty acids. More b12, zinc, iron, and selenium than beef. Some studies show it's got four times the vitamin E compared to beef. Lower in calories and cholesterol. It is lower fat, so it will cook faster than ground beef. Are you a new parent AND graduate? Trying to pass your boards in your last trimester and start a practice with a newborn? In this episode I talk with Megan Neal as she navigates these GIANT life transitions and how she is SO ready to practice medicine! As I see it, there is rarely a perfect time for anything. When is the perfect time to go to medical school? What about starting a family? When should you start working on your Doctoral degree? Or maybe it's time to start taking better care of yourself. What I have learned is that life just keeps getting fuller and fuller as you age. If there is a space in my closet I will fill it. If there is free time in my schedule, I will find ways of putting “more doing” in there. What ever happened to slowly and gently building something of value? Of mindfully constructing the life we were born worthy of? Of gently inviting the blissful whispers of our dreams to slowly unfurl in our waking life. Our fears of not having enough, not being enough and not doing enough cause us to race into jobs, relationships and life in ways that only cause congestion in our otherwise smooth and clear life path. Our medicine is what I like to call slow medicine. It works best when we slow our lives down and focus only on the patient in front of us. It works best when the patient relaxes their grip on the speeding train of life for one hour of slow breathing, genuine care gently shifting the scales of life force back in their favor.I want to invite you to consider practicing slow medicine. For yourself and your patients.Today's GuestMEGAN NEAL LAC.Megan Neal dedicated her life to the study of Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine after transformational experiences with it in her late twenties. At the same time in her life, she encountered yoga, Ashtanga yoga and then Integral Yoga, and has been walking the path ever since. Today Megan is an Arizona state licensed Acupuncturist, board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, NCCAOM, expected November 2022. She is also Arizona state certified by the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, CCAOM, in Clean Needle Technique. Upon graduating from her three year masters program, her and her husband had a beautiful baby boy. She was fortunate to use what she had learned to care for herself in the journey to motherhood. She was thus inspired to specialize in women's health- fertility, pregnancy, perinatal and postpartum care. She has no spare time but if she did, she imagines she would again enjoy writing morning pages, finding hidden pools on Mt. Lemmon, playing the harmonium, five rhythms dance, and continuing to nerd out with her collection of Chinese Medicine books. Leah Guy and Matthew Branham, MAcOM, LAc, discuss powerful topics based on finding the harmony within our lives, living in harmony with the breath, and overcoming the fear of death. Yin & Yang, breathing with nature, finding acceptance and flowing with the expansion and contraction and not forcing through or disrupting are part of this conversation. The breath dynamic happens every day, every season, with every breath, and as with Yin & Yang, the human body also functions seasonally, and part of our conversation is about how death has come to be perceived as a loss, a fear, and a negative occurrence. Perhaps nature has a different intention. To find out more about Leah, visit her website. To find out more about Matthew, visit his website. Matthew received his Master's degree in Acupuncture and Oriental medicine (M.Ac.O.M) from the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine where he was clinically trained in acupuncture modalities from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and even France. Matthew's Chinese herbal medicine training is broad and includes both classical and modern approaches. He is licensed as an acupuncturist and herbalist in the State of New Jersey and is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).In addition to his acupuncture expertise Matthew has been a massage therapist specializing in Asian Bodywork therapy for over ten years. Matthew's passion is in facilitating patient's journey of healing on a holistic level. Recognizing and honoring that while we appear as separate individuals, in truth we are all deeply connected. Likewise, our mind, emotions, and body are not separate. Disease and pain are often more obvious symptoms of an underlying imbalance.

What is Chinese medicine?Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is thousands of years old and has changed little over the centuries. Its basic concept is that a vital force of life, called Qi, surges through the body. Any imbalance to Qi can cause disease and illness. This imbalance is most commonly thought to be caused by an alteration in the opposite and complementary forces that make up the Qi. These are called yin and yang.Ancient Chinese believed that humans are microcosms of the larger surrounding universe, and are interconnected with nature and subject to its forces. Balance between health and disease is a key concept. TCM treatment seeks to restore this balance through treatment specific to the individual. It is believed that to regain balance, you must achieve the balance between the internal body organs and the external elements of earth, fire, water, wood, and metal.Treatment to regain balance may involve:AcupunctureMoxibustion (the burning of herbal leaves on or near the body)Cupping (the use of warmed glass jars to create suction on certain points of the body)MassageHerbal remediesMovement and concentration exercises (such as tai chi)Acupuncture is a component of TCM commonly found in Western medicine and has received the most study of all the alternative therapies. Some herbal treatments used in TCM can act as medicines and be very effective but may also have serious side effects. In 2004, for example, the FDA banned the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedra and plants containing ephedra group alkaloids due to complications, such as heart attack and stroke. Ephedra is a Chinese herb used in dietary supplements for weight loss and performance enhancement. However, the ban does not apply to certain herbal products prepared under TCM guidelines intended only for short-term use rather than long-term dosing. It also does not apply to OTC and prescription drugs or to herbal teas.If you are thinking of using TCM, a certified practitioner is your safest choice. The federally recognized Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) accredits schools that teach acupuncture and TCM. Many of the states that license acupuncture require graduation from an ACAOM-accredited school. The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine offers separate certification programs in acupuncture, Chinese herbology, and Oriental bodywork.TCM should not be used as a replacement for conventional or allopathic treatment, especially for serious conditions, but it may be beneficial when used as complementary therapy. Since some TCM herbal medicines can interfere or be toxic when combined with Western medicines, you should inform your doctor if you are using TCM. Kokko Wellness, https://www.kokkowellness.com/
