The policies in the first 100 days of the Trump administration have resulted in an extraordinary time of uncertainty and change in the way the global economy works and how it will function in the future. The shock at the speed and scope of the undermining of the current system regulating global trade is real. When we feel disorientated by our current experience of chaos, it is often helpful to try to re-anchor ourselves in putting what we are experiencing into a historical context. In this way, United States' actions can be seen as part of a semi-predictable, oscillating pattern of the rise and fall of market forces vis-a-vis assertions of state power. In this episode, my guest is TRIUM's own Robert Falkner, and we discuss his and Barry Buzan's new book, The Market in Global International Society: An English School Approach to International Political Economy. Robert Falkner is Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics and is the Academic Dean of the TRIUM Global EMBA. Robert has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University, Simone Veil Fellow at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, and Associate Fellow of Chatham House. In addition to his role at the LSE, he is also a Distinguished Fellow of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto. In their new book, Buzon and Falkner argue that while adopting market rules in the international system creates more wealth and power than any alternative organising principles (e.g. mercantilism), it also necessarily undermines state power and sovereignty, which inevitably leads to a reassertion of power by strong state actors. The book is an amazing combination of original theoretical understandings and a staggeringly detailed and nuanced historical account of the oscillations between market and more statist international systems. In this episode, Robert and I discuss the evidence for this pattern and whether the challenges of climate change and technological developments – particularly AI – may mean that the cycle will end and that we are headed into something unknown and unknowable. Regenerative Skills

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2025 61:34

Today I want to start a fun new series on a topic that I've wanted to explore for quite a while, which is the concept of regenerative education. I've worked as a teacher and educational facilitator in different capacities since the beginning of my career, first in before and after school programs for kids, then as an arts and environmental educator at summer camps, then English as a second language in both South Korea and Guatemala, and in between teaching various technical workshops in natural building, permaculture, ecosystem restoration, the transition journey to regenerative agriculture, and of course water management and water cycle restoration. Every time I engage in these activities I gain huge respect for teachers and the incredible skill and patience it takes to be an effective educational facilitator. Similarly, I want to continue to grow as a teacher and even improve my skills as a student since I'm also always in some sort of course or other at the same time. I know this is a wide and nuanced topic and so to help me to become oriented to the considerations and scope of what I'm exploring, I reached out to Pavel Cenkl, who is the Academic Dean at Prescott College in Arizona (US) and the Founder of the Regenerative Learning Network. His work focuses on the intersection of transformative learning, community, and ecology and building a more regenerative, resilient, and equitable educational future. He's also the author of several books including Transformative Learning (with Satish Kumar), “Relational Ecologies: Building Regenerative Community Learning Networks” in Regenerative Ecosystems in the Anthropocene (2023) and “Lessons from the Periphery” in Regenerative Learning (2022). Pavel's current book in progress is titled Networked Learning: Transforming Higher Education through Distributed Learning. This conversation weaves from the troubles with traditional or conventional educational models and why they leave so many behind, and increasingly in debt, through alternative models of teaching and the potential that educational institutions really have. We explore the role of technology in learning as well as the things the digital world can't replace. Pavel also give his take on what makes effective educators and a window into their process of creating learning curriculums that are in line with the concept of regenerative education. This is the first in a series of interviews that I'm in the process of planning so if you have any ideas of what questions I should explore or who I should speak to in upcoming interviews, I encourage you to reach out to me through the Regenerative Skills Discord server.

Leslie Ginsparg Klein is the Academic Dean of the Women's Institute of Torah Seminary & College, an accomplished scholar, author, and speaker on Jewish history, Tanach, leadership, and communication skills. She passionately discusses the role of women in leadership and education within the Orthodox Jewish community, highlighting the importance of recognizing and supporting female leaders and mentors. Focusing on the transformative impact of figures like Sarah Schneirer and the Bais Yaakov movement, which provided Jewish girls with education and a sense of spiritual identity, Leslie emphasizes the need for women to uplift one another and foster inclusivity and acceptance within the community. In addressing today's challenges in Jewish education, including school rejections, inclusivity, and balancing home and school in teaching Jewish values, Leslie advocates for moving beyond performative education. She calls for internalized spiritual growth rather than surface-level conformity. Sensitive topics such as dress codes, hair covering, and the devaluation of teachers are tackled, with a strong appeal to prioritize respect and fair pay for educators. Leslie and Matana underscore the importance of ensuring meaningful, inclusive education for all children and strengthening the role of women in shaping the community.Dr. Klein earned her Ph.D. from New York University, where she researched the history of Orthodox girls' education in America and the Bais Yaakov movement. Was Mary, the mother of Jesus, truly a virgin? If so, was the virgin birth a literal fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14? Or was this the furthest thing from the mind of the Prophet Isaiah? Dr. Seth Postell, Academic Dean of Israel College of the Bible will be on today's episode to discuss the meaning of this crucial text. Dr. Postell is the Academic Dean of Israel College of the Bible in Israel, an educational ministry of ONE FOR ISRAEL. Dr. Postell completed his PhD in Hebrew Bible under the mentorship of Dr. John Sailhamer. He also studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and did post-graduate studies on literary approaches to the Hebrew Bible under leading Israeli scholars at Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan. He has authored or coauthored several books including Adam as Israel (2011), Reading Moses, Seeing Jesus (2017) and essays in The Moody Handbook of Messianic Prophecy (2020), The Handbook of the Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith (2021), Reading the Psalms Theologically (2023). Because of Dr. Postell's interest in inner-biblical interpretation and the New Testament's use of the Tanakh, he is the perfect guest for today's program. In this conversation, Dr. Paul D. Weaver and Dr. Seth Postell discuss the current situation in Israel, the impact of recent conflicts on ministry, and delve into the theological implications of Isaiah 7:14, particularly the interpretation of the Hebrew words 'Alma' and 'Betula'. They explore the significance of these terms in the context of biblical prophecy and the broader implications for understanding the virgin birth of Jesus. In this conversation, Dr. Paul D. Weaver and Seth Postell delve into the interpretation of the term 'Alma' in Isaiah 7:14, discussing its implications for understanding the virgin birth of Jesus. They explore the lexical meaning of 'Alma', the contextual significance of Isaiah's prophecy, and the fulfillment of this prophecy in the New Testament, particularly in the Gospel of Matthew. The discussion also addresses the debate surrounding the concept of double fulfillment in prophetic texts and emphasizes the importance of understanding the original Hebrew context. The conversation concludes with reflections on the significance of these interpretations in the context of celebrating the birth of Jesus as the Messiah.

Today, our guest is Munther Isaac, Academic Dean of Bethlehem Bible College and pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem. Munther's family have been shepherds in the same hills as the shepherds who heard from the angel of God that first Christmas. And although the world is fighting to dehumanize the Palestinian people and the people in Gaza, the words of the angel are still true. Jesus is good news for all people. Every human is made in the image of God and is worthy of love, dignity, and life. You know, when you are at a distance, it is easy to get caught up in the headlines and the latest violence. But we need to go deeper to see what is happening. And that's what we are doing today. Reverend Munther takes us back through the history, showing how this conflict has roots going back decades. It didn't just start with October 7th. Munther calls us to see the humanity in all the people caught up in this. He shares a haunting poem by a Palestinian professor killed in the violence - a man who wanted his death to bring hope, not vengeance. It's a powerful reminder that behind the headlines, there are real people, with dreams and fears just like our own. This is a conversation that won't let you look away. But it also opens up a new way of seeing - one rooted in the radical compassion of Jesus, who calls us to love even our enemies. This Advent, Christ is still in the rubble. He sees the children, the women, the men of Gaza and Palestine with love and compassion. Will we? Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac is a Palestinian Christian pastor, theologian, and writer, known for his role as the pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem and as the academic dean at Bethlehem Bible College. He is also the director of the Christ at the Checkpoint conferences and has been a vocal advocate for peace and reconciliation in the region. Pluto has been doing a little “dance” moved into Aquarius and then retrograded back into Capricorn, leading to considerable upheaval and transformation in themes related to systems, structures, business, and government. This transit encourages breaking free from traditional constraints and exploring new identities and ways of being.Expect a surge in revolutionary ideas and unconventional approaches to problems, as Pluto encourages people to challenge the status quo and seek transformative solutions.
