One small town, two "thousand-year floods" in the span of two years: how does a community become resilient in the face of the ever-increasing risks of climate change?Small towns across America and around the world face mounting challenges with flood risk, a result of not only climate change but also poorly adapted landscapes, sprawl, overdevelopment and poor planning. After the Floods: The Search for Resilience in Ellicott City (Oxford UP, 2024) is about Ellicott City, a small town in central Maryland that experienced two devastating flash floods just 22 months apart. Despite the town's many advantages—wealth, access to expertise, a mobilized community, and a stout identity steeped in 250 years of history—Ellicott City found itself mired in a deeply divisive argument over what to do in the aftermath. As a resident, Ken Conca bore firsthand witness to the conflict that took root when the flood waters receded. While this book is about one residential suburb, the dilemmas that it faces over how to adapt to climate change are coming soon to a small town near you. On one level a story about re-engineering a landscape, After the Floods ultimately grapples with uncertainty over local history, justice, democracy, and identity. What can we know about future risks to our communities? What is the meaning of place and history when preservation goals come into conflict with flood protection? What should we protect? Who gets to speak for the community? In Ellicott City's search for answers, we can find important lessons for other small communities that must begin preparing for future climate risks. This interview was conducted by Dr. Hannah Pool whose research focuses on human mobilities. She is a senior researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Studies of Societies. Much of the public animosity was aimed at the way insurance companies prevent Americans from getting the care their doctors prescribe. Some employees grappled with the idea that their paychecks were padded in part by the practice of denying care.Witty, in a video to staff last week, attempted to address the rage but failed to change the narrative for some workers. “As you've seen, people are writing things we simply don't recognize, are aggressive, inappropriate and disrespectful,” he said, urging employees to ignore the media. “There's no value in engaging.”But:Before the investor day last week was cut short, Witty used some of his time on stage to acknowledge the widespread dissatisfaction with his industry. “You only have to walk into a room with five people to hear four stories of frustration. ‘I couldn't find a doctor, I didn't know where to go. It's too difficult to understand,'” he said in a room full of financial analysts and investors. The culture at the top was shaped for years by veterans of the defunct accounting firm Arthur Andersen, where Chairman and former CEO Stephen Hemsley once worked. A previous CEO, William McGuire, unceremoniously left the company and settled with the Securities and Exchange Commission over backdating stock options that regulators alleged enriched him and other executives. In recent years, a series of acquisitions have consolidated UnitedHealth's position so much that when a cyberattack took out its Change Healthcare subsidiary, doctors offices and hospitals across the country were paralyzed. That market dominance has come under review by the Department of Justice, Bloomberg News has reported. Members of Congress who have called for a breakup of the conglomerate.Thompson was one of a handful of executives who sold UnitedHealth shares after the company learned it was under investigation by the DOJ, but before that information was shared with the public, Bloomberg reported. The company's stock fell when the DOJ investigation was reported. However, the article cautions that claims of enhanced accuracy through advanced computational methods are often exaggerated. Both UnitedHealth and Humana are currently facing lawsuits over their use of nH Predict. The suits allege that insurers pressured case managers to follow the algorithm's length-of-stay recommendations, even when clinicians and families objected. One lawsuit filed last year against UnitedHealth claims that 90% of the algorithm's recommendations are reversed on appeal. The lawsuit states that UnitedHealthcare wrongfully denied elderly patients care by “overriding their treating physicians' determinations as to medically necessary care based on an AI model that Defendants know has a 90% error rate.”Leaked video shows UnitedHealth CEO defending practices that prevent ‘unnecessary' careAccording to ValuePenguin, a site that helps users compare insurance plans' costs, UnitedHealth's 32% claims denial rate was twice the industry average. See below for timestamps! In today's episode we kick off the case of David Michael Crawford, a retired Maryland Police Chief turned serial arsonist. We will be starting with the first arson in a series he was linked to in court with a fire at the home of a fellow city employee. We're bringing you a deep dive into a case I've been researching for over 6 months and currently this case is pending appeal in Maryland. Join us as we dive into one twisted and shocking serial arson case on Crime to Burn. We begin this case with many disclaimers and explanations about evidence, sources, and testimony in this case and they are important. I have provided time stamps below in case you wish to fast forward to the case but the disclaimers will provide you with additional insight into the judicial process and criminal court cases. Timestamps: Disclaimers begin at 2:49 2:49 - 4:08 - A discussion about crimes the defendant has been convicted of and the difference between accused and convicted. 4:08 - 5:06 - An explanation of some evidence presented in court related to fires other than the ones for which he was standing trial. 5:06 - 6:44 - A discussion of the defendant's wife and explanation that she is not accused of being involved nor of having knowledge of her husband's crimes. 6:44 - 8:25 - Discussion of crimes unrelated to the arsons presented in court which members of the defendant's immediate family indicated in press reports they suspect Crawford's involvement. 8:25 - 10:27 - Explanation of court recordings and bench conversations and differentiating between what can be gleaned from the court recordings verses what was known to the jury. Also includes a discussion of hearsay, probative value of evidence and testimony, and prejudicial testimony. 10:27 - 11:45 - Discussion of state's burden in criminal cases and constitutional rights of defendants to not testify. 11:45 - 13:17: Discussion of off the record sources used for this podcast and a reminder that all witnesses are off-limits until the conclusion of the appeal. 13:17 - 15:34 - My own personal implicit bias due to my involvement in some of the organizations involved in this case. 15:34 - 17:05 - Discussion of what court records were obtained and what records were not used and why. 17:05 - 18:12 - Discussion about defense attorney. UPDATE AFTER RECORDING: Mr. Bonsib did reply to my email and provided the appellate brief but has indicated that given the pending appeal, he does not feel it would be appropriate to discuss the case with me. I understand and respect his decision. 18:12 - 20:27 - Discussion about narrative storytelling and using emotions to drive the narrative and a reminder that these perspectives used for storytelling are not intended to imply guilt or innocence of the defendant. Also discussion about authentically presenting the emotions and implications of others and not my own. 20:27 END OF DISCLAIMERS. Background Music is by Not Notoriously Coordinated. I am most active on Instagram and do provide reels that often give technical information or case background for our current cases. we are @crimetoburn on all three platforms. The legend of Peeping Tom, known generationally as “Blink Man,” “The Tunnel Man,” and even “Ilchester the Molester,” has its roots in the Great Depression, and has inspired the nightmares of thousands of Ellicott City children since. It's a story that has been curiously overlooked by writers on the subject of Maryland folklore, but one that seems to be making a comeback in the aftermath of the flooding of Main Street in July of 2016.Support the pod:www.patreon.com/monsterfuzzCheck out our merch:https://monster-fuzz.creator-spring.comEverything else!www.linktr.ee/monsterfuzz

In this episode, Dr. Ken Johnson talks about the shift from traditional physio techniques to more technology-driven, function-focused approaches. We discuss tecar therapy, radial and focused shockwave treatments, and how these methods enhance cellular recovery and function. I add my insights on low-level laser therapy, explaining how it promotes cellular health and regeneration without causing thermal damage. Together, we highlight the importance of a multimodal approach backed by the latest evidence and technological advancements. Key Takeaways: Evolution of Pain Management: Dr. Johnson touches on how pain management has evolved from basic physical agents to incorporating advanced technologies like tecar therapy, which targets cellular metabolism and recovery. Role of Shockwave Therapy: The efficacy of radial and focused shockwave therapy in treating musculoskeletal issues, especially in difficult cases like Achilles tendinopathy. Laser Therapy Insights: Dr. Silverman discusses the benefits of low-level laser therapy in boosting mitochondrial function and overall cellular health without the risks of thermal damage. Holistic Approach: Both experts agree on a multimodal and functional approach for optimal patient outcomes, utilizing various tools and technologies to meet individual needs. Practical Health Tips: Dr. Johnson provides actionable advice on hydration, posture, and using tools like foam rollers for maintaining lower back health and overall physical well-being. What does it take to transform challenges into a thriving business? Reilly Kahat, owner and founder of Pet Fit, shares his transition from a dog walker to the owner of a flourishing pet care service. Following an unforeseen business closure that left him questioning his next steps, Reilly leverages his deep affection for animals to build a community rooted business from the ground up. He explores the importance of adaptive branding, the move towards a membership-based model for consistent service, and the cultivation of a supportive team dynamic. Reflecting on the hurdles faced, including navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic, Reilly illustrates how setbacks were not just obstacles but opportunities for growth and deeper community engagement. Main topics: Business Journey Membership Model Shift Branding and Engagement Leadership and Team Management Main takeaway: Every challenge in our journey is a lesson in disguise, teaching us to be more adaptable, empathetic, and focused on the true essence of pet care. About our guest: Reilly Kahat is the Founder and Lead Adventurer at Pet Fit, a pioneering pet care service rooted in the lush landscapes of Ellicott City, Maryland, where he spent his formative years. From an early age, Reilly's life on a family farmette instilled in him a profound respect for animals and an understanding of the care they require. His childhood dreams of canine companionship became a reality with the adoption of Fender, a Maltese, marking the beginning of his lifelong journey with pets. Reilly's educational pursuits took him to Colorado, where he sought an Eco/Bio degree with aspirations of contributing positively to society. However, it was the mountainous adventures with Patches, a dog that accompanied him during his college years, that illuminated his true passion for pet care and the great outdoors. Returning to Ellicott City without Patches but not without ambition, Reilly adopted Murphy from a local rescue, Small Miracles, and embraced his role as a devoted Dog Dad. His experiences as a client of pet care services and later as a dog walker unveiled a significant gap in the market: the need for a professional, reliable, and adventure-centric pet care company. This realization spurred Reilly to establish Pet Fit, a testament to his commitment to offering exceptional care and customer service. Pet Fit isn't just a business; it's a reflection of Reilly's dedication to the health, well-being, and adventurous spirit of pets, providing Ellicott City's pet parents with a trusted partner in their pets' care journey. Discover Advent in Everyday Moments: Finding HOPE Advent One: Three Stories of HopeIn the face of adversity, it is often our resilience that shines through, guiding us towards hope and strength. As a church that has experienced its fair share of trauma and tragedy, it has emerged stronger and more determined than ever. In this excerpt from a Good News! podcast, we invite you to reflect on the profound lessons of resilience, hope, and faith. The second excerpt focuses on Living Water Inclusive Catholic Community and Roman Catholic Womenpriests. The speaker gives the example of the inspiring story of a group of sisters who voted unanimously to see their work to completion, embracing the hope that lies in the seeds they have planted. Similarly, Living Water Inclusive Catholic Community, led by Pastor Gloria Carpeneto, is a stepping stone in the evolution of God's plan. The third excerpt highlights the importance of empowering Gen Z in their passion for social justice and truth. Gen Z individuals are vocal about their beliefs and dedicated to making a difference in the world. An annual membership costs just over a dollar a week when you do the math. If you aren't ready to fully commit for a year, join for a month and you can cancel at any time. If you know you'll want to stay forever, we also have a lifetime membership option available. IF is free. You don't need to join our community to fast. But if you're looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community. Susan was overweight her entire life but never dieted. Thanks to Karl's incredible cooking, her weight crept up to over 210 pounds. She knew it was time to do something. In December of 2021, a family member shared Delay, Don't Deny with Susan, and she immediately jumped into IF with a 20:4 protocol. She has lost more than 40 pounds. Karl did not begin his own IF journey until November of 2021, and has lost over 60 pounds. Both Susan and Karl enjoy the health benefits that IF brings: great sleep, body recomposition, and tremendous healing. Susan has created a website to share IF success stories! www.intermittentfastingsuccess.com Susan's advice: “Know that there is no such thing as a perfect body.”Karl's advice: “Hunger is not an emergency. When you're feeling hunger, know that your body is doing work. Enjoy your meal when it's time to open your window.” Get Gin's books at: http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including Cleanish and New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast.
