Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of The Chai on Life Podcast. I'm Alex Segal, and today we are speaking with Miriam Pineles, a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine practicing in Cedarhurst, NY.Miriam is someone who really heals from the inside out. I met Miriam almost five years ago now when I was pregnant with my first son and experiencing really horrible back pain in my third trimester. Miriam healed me in one week. I couldn't believe it. Honestly, before going to her, I was skeptical about acupuncture and had no interest in it but afterward I was completely sold and talking about it to everyone I knew.Throughout the last few years though, I've learned that it wasn't just the acupuncture or the healing techniques she used, it was Miriam herself. She is meant to be a healer. She is someone that holds space for so many individuals and when you're with her, she makes you feel like you are the only person that matters. In addition to her clinical practice, Miriam teaches “Living With The Elements,” a course she created to help women gain deeper self-awareness and foster harmony in their relationships and homes. If you want to learn more and sign up (it starts September 9!) you can do so at livingwiththeelements.com.In this interview, we speak more about the course she created and what you will get out of it as well as:-How she got into Chinese medicine and how it's deeply connected to Torah and Kabbalah-What is going on under the surface when you're getting acupuncture or Chinese medicine treatments and why they work-Where a lot of unhappiness and disease stem from-How we may be passing unresolved trauma and issues onto our kids — and how you can stop that-What the five elements of Chinese medicine are and how they connect to Judaism-We go through each element and learn a little bit more about what each one means-What the framework of seeing yourself and child through the elements can do for your parenting-Practical parenting takeaways you can start today…and SO MUCH MORE!More about Miriam:Miriam Pineles, DACM, is the founder of Conscious Health and Wellness, Inc., a premier Chinese medicine clinic located in Cedarhurst, NY. With a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine (DACM) and certification from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), Miriam is also licensed in Acupuncture by the State of New York. Her extensive training includes mentorship under some of the most revered practitioners both in the United States and internationally. Miriam has mastered unique techniques in acupuncture, pulse analysis, and herbal prescription, specializing in women's perinatal health and addressing syndromes arising from emotional trauma. She also founded *Ayin Healing*, a non-profit organization dedicated to running holistic healing retreats that support Jewish women recovering from childhood sexual abuse.Explore more about Miriam's work at:• [Conscious Health and Wellness](http://www.Conscioushealthandwellness.com)• [Living With The Elements](http://www.livingwiththeelements.com)• [Ayin Healing](http://www.ayinhealing.com)You can also learn more about Miriam on the Chai on Life website here.If you enjoyed this episode, leave a rating and review so more people can gain from Miriam's wisdom. Dr. Amanda Tieu states, "Acupuncture has little to no risk and helps with pain, stress, and inflammation." She's seen many success stories, from helping couples with infertility to injured veterans who've tried everything for pain. In the case of Dr. Tieu's Army veteran patient, his Dr. suggested acupuncture as a last-ditch effort to try before getting surgery; spoiler alert, the veteran had so much success with acupuncture and pain management that he skipped the surgery! Dr. Tieu also discussed how acupuncture can inhibit the signals from the brain that are screaming, PAIN! It can block pain signals and turn down inflammation. I've had great success in using acupuncture to manage pain. I broke my leg snow skiing twenty-five years ago and didn't have the resources to get it fixed using surgery (I didn't have good health insurance, owned a business, and couldn't afford to take time off). I used acupuncture for pain management and inflammation. Fast forward to today, and I've trained for and completed five half marathons and surf five days a week. I can tell you that my experience with acupuncture has been nothing but positive! Dr. Tieu received her Doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine, Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and License in Massage Therapy at Bastyr University. She is board certified by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE) and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She has participated in local nonprofit organizations that sought to provide care to underserved patients, focused on acute injuries and post-recovery treatments of athletes at Bastyr's Sports Medicine Club, and volunteered as a clinical care member at her local hospital. I love using Bison! It's very nutrient dense and contains conjugated linoleic acid (I know, what the heck does that mean?), which means Bison has anti-inflammatory properties. Here are the other reasons why I love using Bison in place of ground beef: Higher amounts of omega three fatty acids. More b12, zinc, iron, and selenium than beef. Some studies show it's got four times the vitamin E compared to beef. Lower in calories and cholesterol. It is lower fat, so it will cook faster than ground beef. QUOTE of the Day: The quiet is the foundation and the source of all the sound and activity. -EJ Fry In this episode of “My Love of Life Energy” I am speaking EJ Fry. EJ Fry is an acupuncturist who I have known for many years. I have experienced the impact of his medicine; I value and wanted to share the depth of his listening and discernment. We discuss acupuncture as well as the ways in which deep listening and quieting the mind aids in healing and peace when we trust whatever life brings us as it unfolds. EJ is a licensed acupuncturist currently practicing in Oakland, California, focusing on the treatment of pain (especially migraine headaches), digestive issues, and emotional/spiritual issues. He holds a Master's degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Pacific College of Health and Science in New York, and am nationally certified as a Diplomat of Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). His commitment to giving patients the best possible care led him to continue his studies in China with Dr. Wang Juyi and Dr. Yun Ku at Fuxing Hospital in Beijing. He also went to China to study medicine as it's practiced in Daoist temples, specifically Jian Fu Gong in Sichuan province. He has been ordained a 23rd-generation Daoist priest in the Longmen lineage of Quanzhen. In addition to his dedication to classical Chinese needling skills, he is particularly passionate about herbal medicine, and he makes it a top priority in treatments. He is currently teaching this subject to grad school students at ACCHS in Oakland. His lifelong enthusiasm about Chinese cultural and religious studies rounds out his dedication to China's medical traditions. His focus on Daoism (especially qigong), Chan (Zen) Buddhism, and Wuxing (Five Phase theory) is utilized in his treatments. As a devoted practitioner of Buddhist meditation in the Zen lineage, he brings practice of mindfulness to acupuncture treatments, and encourage it as an adjunct therapy along with acupuncture and herbs. For more information on EJ Fry please visit www.EJFry.com -- I am a coach who works with people on developing rich relationships with themselves and others to help find the beauty and divinity within. Leah Guy and Matthew Branham, MAcOM, LAc, discuss powerful topics based on finding the harmony within our lives, living in harmony with the breath, and overcoming the fear of death. Yin & Yang, breathing with nature, finding acceptance and flowing with the expansion and contraction and not forcing through or disrupting are part of this conversation. The breath dynamic happens every day, every season, with every breath, and as with Yin & Yang, the human body also functions seasonally, and part of our conversation is about how death has come to be perceived as a loss, a fear, and a negative occurrence. Perhaps nature has a different intention. To find out more about Leah, visit her website. To find out more about Matthew, visit his website. Matthew received his Master's degree in Acupuncture and Oriental medicine (M.Ac.O.M) from the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine where he was clinically trained in acupuncture modalities from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, and even France. Matthew's Chinese herbal medicine training is broad and includes both classical and modern approaches. He is licensed as an acupuncturist and herbalist in the State of New Jersey and is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).In addition to his acupuncture expertise Matthew has been a massage therapist specializing in Asian Bodywork therapy for over ten years. Matthew's passion is in facilitating patient's journey of healing on a holistic level. Recognizing and honoring that while we appear as separate individuals, in truth we are all deeply connected. Likewise, our mind, emotions, and body are not separate. Disease and pain are often more obvious symptoms of an underlying imbalance.

Is your body fully aligned? Is your energy fluid? Are you taking time to support your body and your energy flow, and really encourage your vital life force to support you in all your doing on a consistent basis, or are you waiting until you're in crisis mode? Now is a good moment for a Wise Walk. On the True Stride podcast, we take a Wise Walk to slow down and check our reality. True Stride is that feeling you get when you're aligned in your heart with all that you do, and you feel energized and happy with each and every step that you take. I'm your host, Mary Tess Rooney, and I connect with Dr. Melissa Jordan to go on our Wise Walk for this guest episode. Dr. Melissa Jordan is a practitioner for life force in different modalities. Dr. Melissa pulls much of her insight from an advanced Doctorate in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine with a focus on Integrative Oncology, specifically Breast Cancer, and the utilization of Acupuncture to enhance quality of life and tolerability to oncological treatment. Her background as a healer also includes her completing a dual enrollment in a Naturopathic Medical Program and the Masters of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine (SIOM), and also a national board certification in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM ®). She works with maintenance in the body and energy systems, alongside being an avid gardener and passionate cook. On our Wise Walk, Dr. Melissa and I share our thoughts on these questions and more: What is one thing to do to support life energy? What are some of the things we notice when it's time to check, and how can you support it in a way that makes sense? What simple modalities work for - clients? What feeds your mind, body, and spirit? What fills you with joy? Place energy towards a new productive beginning. Take an opportunity to open yourself to becoming more aware of the energy balance you carry throughout life. Acknowledge all the feelings, and turn those feelings into something useful. If you want to start, discover a useful question to guide you towards the most effective awareness. Take a Wise Walk to uncover a new sense of freedom. Within that freedom is the opportunity to voice our value and a path to connect with an inspiring community. From there, we can explore what it looks like to move forward in our journey. In this episode: [00:23] - Welcome to the show! [02:24] - Dr. Melissa describes her intention of being a healer stretching back to her childhood. [04:51] - Dr. Melissa explains what reiki and Qi relate to in life force. [06:11] - Energy force is the body's intelligence to communicate how we are operating. [08:16] - Dr. Melissa encourages everyone to balance for optimal harmony as we move through life. [09:59] - Are you holding onto any tightness in your body? [11:41] - Mary Tess and Dr. Melissa talk about the need for consistent energetic maintenance like a car needing regular maintenance. [13:26] - Shift energy and life force after a pause. Dr. Melissa talks about the balance of rest and stillness in response to movement. [15:10] - Take an opportunity to open yourself to receiving. Acknowledge all the feelings, and turn those feelings into something useful. [25:35] - Dr. Melissa encourages everyone to listen to their body. Mary Tess reminds everyone about the importance of being intentional. [27:03] - Thank you for listening! Memorable Quotes: “I hope we all have this place where you close your eyes and you get in that part of yourself that just knows, like that old, ancient, wise part.” - Dr. Melissa “Feel whatever is in alignment, or out of alignment, with your body, with your energy, with your surroundings, because we're not just affected internally by what's happening with our system and our energy cycles, but we're also highly influenced by what's around us.” - Mary Tess Links and Resources: Mary Tess Rooney Email Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram

This episode features New York State licensed Acupuncturist, Lana Stacy. Board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), Lana has a passion for developing meaningful relationships with each of her patients and creating a safe space for them to heal, grow, and evolve into the best versions of themselves. At the crux of all of her treatments is a profound understanding of the connection between the mind and body. Lana specializes in pain management and have received advanced training in trigger point therapy. She also has experience with internal medicine, including migraines, digestive disorders, menstrual issues, and chronic urinary tract infections. As a long-term patron of therapy herself, she has a special interest in working with mental health and those in recovery, especially anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, and addiction. For these internal conditions, she focuses primarily on the styles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Five Element, Japanese, and Korean techniques in order to fully tap into and treat the "Shen" (the spirit). In this episode, we talk about how Lana discovered acupuncture and what moment drove her to decide to pursue this as her calling and career. Lana also explains the difference between western and eastern medicine and why she incorporates Chinese medicine and approaches to healing in her practice. She currently works at WTHN, which is an acupuncture studio in NYC (which is how we met because she is my acupuncturist!) and discussed how the studio aligns with her own values of the power of healing and prevention. As someone who used to be a workaholic, Lana recalls how she would burn out by working constantly and running around in NYC. Since the pandemic and her loss, she has learned the beauty of slow living and advocates for all us to practice that. She is now appreciating all the magic surrounding NYC and is also working on her side hustle which are house calls for acupuncture sessions. Alyse Snyder is one of those people we hear about who knew from a very young age what she wanted to do when she grew up; she felt called to healing, medicine, and helping others. This was, at least in part, because of her walking through her mother’s experience of having a back injury when she was young, and the journey they went on in search of treatment options beyond surgery. Along the way, they discovered Acupuncture, which provided amazing outcomes – both emotionally and physically – for her mom, and sparked Alyse’s curiosity about Chinese Medicine. Upon entering college, she finished her Bachelor’s in two years, her Master’s in four, and went straight into training for her Doctorate in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. She explained to Laura how we are energetic bodies and when we have physical and/or emotional traumas, there is residue from the experience embedded in our cells, which eventually present as illness in some form. Functional Medicine is a more holistic approach to treatment, as it takes into account the body as a whole, and practitioners map treatment plans based on that holistic approach with a focus on getting the body’s systems back into homeostasis or healthy stability. As all things evolve over time, today her practice is centered on what’s officially called Advance Allergy Therapeutics (AAT), or what she says is really more closely defined as “Sensitivities,” as an individual may experience a sensitivity to a specific substance, but not actually be “allergic” as it’s strictly defined. AAT is a non-invasive, precision-based practice incorporating acupressure, muscle testing, and kinesiology. Using a specially designed USB arm-cuff, she is able to test for sensitivities that don’t necessarily show up in bloodwork. The treatment protocol using a tapping process that repatterns the body’s electrical signals, rather than relying on pills, shots, or supplements. Essentially, it’s very individualized diagnosis and treatment. It’s a fascinating conversation, that just skims the surface of Dr. Snyder’s expertise and experience. It will leave you wanting to know more. Dr. Snyder’s Bio Dr. Alyse Snyder is a licensed acupuncturist in the states of Texas and California with more than a decade of wellness experience. She is a board-certified Diplomate of Oriental Medicine, the highest designation given by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). Alyse’s practice includes Advanced Allergy Therapeutics (AAT), acupuncture, neurotransmitter testing, targeted nutritional therapy, and sound healing. She completed her doctorate in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and is obtaining her certification in functional medicine from the Institute of Functional Medicine. Alyse received her undergraduate education in North Carolina where she studied Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Eastern Studies, and Chinese Language. Using this strong science and eastern education, she went on to earn a Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine (MTOM) at the prestigious Emperor’s College in Santa Monica, California, and graduated in 2005 with Magna Cum Laude honors. During her clinical internships at University of California at Los Angeles and the Venice Family Clinic, Alyse treated both children and adults struggling with mental health issues. Alyse studied under world-renowned expert and practitioner of Chinese Medicine, Giovanni Macciocia, and began to specialize in treating psycho-emotional disorders such as insomnia, depression, anxiety, and attention disorders. Her passion for working with these disorders and love for treating children naturally led to helping children diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety issues. She advanced her training with the addition of Acutonics, a treatment that utilizes sound vibration for healing and offers Acutonics treatments in conjunction with her acupuncture sessions. She has adopted a style that incorporates Japanese acupuncture techniques: gentle insertion and very thin needles that allow for practically pain-free treatments. In 2012, Alyse moved to Austin, Texas. During her first two years in the state capital, she suffered from debilitating respiratory allergies. Her search for relief ultimately led her to Advanced Allergy Therapeutics (AAT). AAT uses muscle testing to see what items might be causing stress to the body. After 8 non-invasive, individualized sessions, her allergies dissipated and she was able to resume a normal life, free of the flu-like symptoms, joint pain, and fatigue that she had experienced for two years. So compelled by the success of the treatment, in 2015, Alyse incorporated it into her own practice and became the second AAT practitioner in Austin. She is ecstatic to offer her patients and all allergy sufferers with this unique therapy that provides rapid, long term results without the use of drops, shots, needles, or supplements. Alyse is a highly intuitive and heart-centered wellness advocate who believes in the power of energy, intuition, and self-healing. When not in the clinic, Alyse enjoys traveling, writing, yoga, seeing music. and being outdoors with her children. Connect with Dr. Snyder: Dr. Alyse Snyder Online On Instagram

Today's episode with Monica Helland was so much fun! We took a field trip to Fusion Life Spa in Deephaven, MN. It is such a beautiful and relaxing space with the cutest gift shop. You just want to hang out there all day. And the massages and facials are pretty awesome as well - in addition to Monica's services of course! This episode was recorded shortly before the Coronavirus Pandemic exploded and stay at home orders were put in place. Please keep this in mind as you listen to the epsiode. Monica is a second generation acupuncturist and herbalist with a warm and innovative approach to whole body health. Monica is Minneapolis' active expert in digestive health, fertility, and cosmetic acupuncture. Her approach to healing stems from revered and ancient remedies. Along with her clinical experience, she brings to her practice a deeply intuitive and gentle approach to acupuncture and Eastern medicine. Licensed in acupuncture by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, and nationally board-certified from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), Monica graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Masters Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Minnesota College of Oriental Medicine at Northwestern Health Sciences University in 2011. As of January 2019 Monica has begun working toward her Doctoral degree with the Pacific College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Her journey into Traditional Chinese Medicine began at a young age when Monica's aunt, Diana Gross, L.Ac., a well-respected acupuncturist in Minneapolis, introduced her to the medicine. Over the years, Monica personally received great benefit from Diana's treatments and a wealth of knowledge from her teachings. Monica says, “Today I continue the legacy my aunt Diana Gross, L.Ac. began many years ago, and now I, too, am an ambassador of this great medicine.” Monica lives with her husband Charles, son Otis, and Siberian forest cats Sofia and Viggo in Plymouth, MN. In today's conversation, we dive into Traditional Chinese Medicine and specifically acupuncture. We learn how Monica's services can treat and heal many conditions including: pain, digestive health, women's fertility/women's health, insomnia, allergies, Menopause, ADHD and much more. She even works in cosmetic acupuncture which we really want to learn more about and we are planning to have Monica back for an entire episode on this topic! Monica also explains how she helps patients determine what the underlying root problem is of the patients "dis-ease" in the body. She does this through a variety of methods. Monica shares a few stories of her patient's experiences with acupuncture and how it has helped them. We also discuss illness prevention and building immunity whether it pertains to the common flu or a Coronavirus and she leaves us with some tips and tricks on how to be on top of seasonal allergies. We also discuss "Liver Season" and a few tips on how to get your liver up and going for the day. We wrap-up talking about ear seeds. Ear seeds are small seeds used to stimulate pressure points in your ear. They're a type of auriculotherapy, which refers to acupressure or acupuncture focused on the ear. They're based on the same general principles as acupuncture. The Case: Ariella is 32 and has been trying to get pregnant for the last year. As soon as she stopped taking the pill, she experienced irregular cycles, and headaches and cramps around her period Her family doctor’s only suggestion was to see a fertility specialist who suggested IVF which was too expensive. She tried tracking her cycle with an app but it wasn’t helping. The Investigation More than 10% of American women struggle to become (or stay) pregnant. Infertility has been on a steady incline over the past few decades and it’s estimated that by 2025, there will be close to 10 million couples struggling to have a baby. Fertility challenges may be common but in Ariella’s case, I suspected that the root of the problem had been hiding for a long time. My first clue was that she’d started taking birth control pills over a decade ago in order to deal with similar symptoms of her period. The pill may have masked the symptoms, but they didn’t solve the problem. If she wanted to get pregnant, we would have to deal with the root cause. Kymberly Kelly is a licensed acupuncturist with a practice in New York City. She has a Master’s of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, California and is a Diplomat with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She specializes in fertility enhancement and pregnancy support so I knew she would be just the person to discuss Ariella’s case with. The Chinese Medicine Approach Just like functional medicine, Chinese medicine looks at the individual and knows that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. They know that the entire body constitution must be considered to solve an issue. Kymberly explains that fertility issues are not just about the sex organs. You have to look at the systems and find the pattern constitution. For example, she would look at someone dealing with headaches and consider what happens alongside those headaches. This might be triggers or other symptoms that will give a clearer sense of what treatment is going to solve the problem not just mask it. This is quite true for those suffering from Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which is a common cause of infertility. Internal Weather Conditions Chinese medicine describes phenomenon that are happening in the body by likening it to what was happening in the outside world. So, for example, you might talk about the body’s internal environment as windy, dry, damp, hot or cold the same way you would describe the weather. These conditions are apparent to the trained eye of a Chinese medicine practitioner and help tell the story of what is happening with the different bodily systems that could be causing an issue. Plus, your internal body condition will respond to the external conditions. So, if you have a damp constitution, you might feel worse when it’s humid or raining outside. You might also feel worse when you eat ‘damp’ food like tofu or dairy. But, there is a way to balance out these internal conditions. Diagnosing Body Constitution Patterns There are no diagnostic tests to determine if you are damp, dry, hot, or cold internally; Chinese medicine tests are subjective. Kymberly explains that she has to ask a lot of questions around sleep, digestion, thirst, and temperature to see what the body is experiencing and how all of the systems are functioning together. She feels different pulses, to get a clear picture of what’s going on in the body. And, she will take a look at the tongue. Does it have teeth marks around the edge, thick coating, or really distended veins underneath? Each of these things can be significant to determining the internal state of the body. Chinese Medicine Treatment for Infertility Each patient is going to have their own unique treatment plan based on the assessment of their constitutional patterns and the internal state of their body. However, Kymberly says that 99% of treatments for fertility include acupuncture. Acupuncture works well to adjust the qi in the body and reset certain systems. She often starts with that and then adds herbal treatments one at a time so that she can determine what’s working and not working. It’s a process and it may take some time and some treatment-tweaking to restore fertility. Stress, Infertility and Acupuncture Stress can dramatically affect fertility, especially if it is chronic. If the body is in a permanent parasympathetic state, the environment is not right for creating new life. When we think of it in terms of fight or flight, a body in this state will not do anything to decrease the chances of survival (as a pregnancy would) so it shuts down fertility. So many of us are dealing with constant low-level stress that it can be hard to believe that this is the cause of infertility. Acupuncture can counter that parasympathetic state and calm the central nervous system down. Reducing stress is often step one in dealing with infertility. Reproductive Battery Pack Chinese medicine recognizes that there are many systems that support the reproductive system. Clearing or restoring Qi flow to these systems can be critical in solving infertility issues. The kidney systems is one of these crucial systems because it must be in balance for the body to create follicle and to build some endometrial lining. Each must be functioning for ovulation to come to fruition at ovulation. The liver system is also crucial because it is closely linked to the release of hormones through the cycle. A well functioning liver system will help the hormonal transitions through the cycle with ease, which is ideal for fertilization. Stagnation of the liver system, on the other hand, can lead to challenges with reproduction. These organ systems have a role to play in the overall energetic system and the blood system. If either or both of these experience stagnation, the result can cause fertility issues. Food and Infertility Chinese medicine regards food (and it’s role in the body’s constitution) a little differently than a nutritionist. While I might look at the nutrients, Chinese medicine is a little more focused on the nature of the foods. So, instead of the vitamins and minerals they are looking at the temperature, the thickness, the dampness and how those attributes impact the body’s internal environment. According to Chinese medicine, those can affect the way the body functions. And, eating warm food is better for digestion (because cold signals a shut down while warm activates). Having said that, Kymberly is a big proponent of Chinese medicine in combination with good nutrition - she would just caution against eating cold or raw things. She is also a big proponent of bone broth, especially for women wanting to get pregnant. Are Menstrual Cycle Apps Useful? One of the things that Ariella was doing was tracking her menstrual cycle using an app. These apps can be helpful but, as was the case with Ariella, they don’t always tell the whole story. Instead, I had her track her temperature which revealed that she was not ovulating when she thought she was. Kymberly agrees that it’s important to track everything that is happening in your body throughout the course of your cycle. This would include body temperature, cervical fluid and any other indicator of hormonal shifts. Top 3 Tips for Getting Pregnant Track Your Cycle Don’t rely strictly on an app, track as many indicators as you can to paint as clear a picture as possible. Balance Nutrition Eat nutrient rich foods that are warm (not cold or raw). Specifically, ensure you’re getting enough protein (bone broth and other animal protein is ideal), plants with chlorophyll, as well as essential fatty acids like you’d find in avocado, coconut and olive oils, and fatty fish. Reduce Stress This includes stressing about getting pregnant! Remember, it can take time. It can take 6-12 months for a perfectly healthy couple to get pregnant so don’t put too much pressure on each cycle. Mystery Solved These tips proved successful for Ariella. One of the most important clues to solving her mystery was when we realized that she was not ovulating in the middle of her cycle as the app assumed. She was actually ovulating on day 21! While she wasn’t able to see Kymberly (due to living on the other side of the country) she did see an acupuncturist. We worked together on monitoring her cycle (the right way) and balancing her biochemistry. Specifically, Ariella started taking omega 3s as well as evening primrose oil. We also added magnesium and did two months of calcium d glucarate to help her better detoxify estrogen (creating a better estrogen to progesterone balance). Happy Ending After two months on the nutrition changes and weekly acupuncture, her ovulation moved from day 21 to day 16. She was also feeling much more even, had less cramps, and her premenstrual headaches were much better. Two months after that (which was four months after starting everything), she got pregnant naturally. Ariella was of course thrilled and has gone on to have a healthy baby boy last year. Of course I also supported her during her pregnancy and she really felt great during that whole time. She was taking the Prenatal Brilliance and Brilliant DHA, zinc, phos choline and magnesium and continued with those postpartum while she was nursing. Eliminating Health Mysteries For Ariella, we were able to get to the root problem (and avoid expensive IVF) to create a perfect environment for pregnancy. Interview with Lee Hullender Rubin, DAOM, LAc, FABORM Lee is clearly a decorated mover and shaker (see CV below). She is playing such a huge role in furthering the understanding of how Chinese medicine as a whole (which includes but is not limited to acupuncture) can help improve IVF success rates. Her research is pioneering and is the first to attempt to capture the true holistic essence and power of Chinese medicine, so that healthcare providers and women struggling to get pregnant can more deeply trust and embrace this wonderful resource. Support the podcast! Last August I had a conversation with acupuncturist Beth Kearns about each of the tapping points we use in the basic tapping routine. If you haven't listened to the conversation, I encourage you to go back to it because it is informative. There are three main differences between tapping and acupuncture. The first and most obvious is that we tap with our hands and an acupuncturist uses needles. Second, when we are tapping we usually say phrases out loud and if not, we are still focused on a particular issue. This is not required with acupuncture. Third, when tapping we use the same seven to fifteen tapping points for any issue. An acupuncturist uses a custom set of points on the body for each issue from a choice of hundreds. In this conversation Beth explains her intake process to me, what she is looking for when working with clients, and how she decides which points to use. We even play act the intake process with me talking about the specific issue that first brought me to tapping. I found all of this information extremely interesting. Guest: Beth Kearns Contact Beth: web @ BethKearnsAcupuncture.com About Beth: Beth is a fully licensed acupuncturist in the State of Colorado. In today's episode, Brodie talks with Alexa Gilmore, L.Ac. and Chinese herbalist specializing in dermatology, about treating skin conditions using Chinese Medicine. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, many skin conditions result from excess heat in the body, which can cause a varying array of symptoms including redness, rash, itching, fluid buildup, and more. Listen in for some great information to help keep your skin looking and feeling great, and if you or someone you love is struggling with a skin condition, find out what Chinese Medicine can do to help find relief. In this episode, we explore: What skin conditions can be treated using acupuncture and Chinese Medicine What does treatment for a skin condition look like in Chinese Medicine? What kinds of variables would an acupuncturist be interested in knowing to treat a skin condition? Are there specific prescriptions for different skin conditions? Bio-individuality (it's back!) What kinds of things can cause a skin condition? What does “ heat” mean in terms of Chinese Medicine? What can people do to keep their skin healthy? Alexa has been working in a clinical setting for 12 years. She is nationally board certified, a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), and licensed to practice acupuncture as well as to formulate and prescribe custom-made Chinese herbal medicine. A love of learning and commitment to excellence drive Alexa, and she's pursued extensive post-graduate training in acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and soft tissue manipulation, alike. She graduated in the top of her class from Mazin Al-Khafaji's prestigious Chinese Medicine Dermatology Diploma Course in London, England, and now holds the highest certification in the field--the only practitioner in New England with this distinction. Alexa takes a no-nonsense approach to the healing arts and expects positive outcomes. She works in partnership with her patients, providing high quality care as well as empowering them to make lasting changes in their life and health by incorporating simple, effective principles of Chinese medicine into their daily lives. 33% Pain Relief Miracle Even those just starting out with tapping know that Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) works via the meridian system. I know that when I am explaining tapping to the uninitiated I will just say, "It is like acupuncture without needles." When Roger Callahan first developed Thought Field Therapy (TFT), the precursor to EFT, he devised a system of tapping in which specific points were matched to particular issues. When Gary Craig developed EFT he decided that instead of determining which exact point would be best to tap on, it would be better just tap on all of them. For years I have wanted to learn more about the complexities of the meridian system. I have also wondered if that knowledge might improve my tapping. In this week’s podcast my conversation with Beth Kearn, an acupuncturist, helped me to figure that out.
