This is one of my favorit and most exciting episodes I had the pleasure to work on. One of the main reasons why games such as World of Warcraft gained popularity in the early days is because of the real-time feedback they provide. All your actions influence your avatar’s image and its stats which grow with every level. And you can see all this progress enforced by flashing stats +1 stamina, +1 intellect, +1 strength in front of you. In previous articles, I wrote about the importance of grind, hard work and failure. In this one, you will learn how to apply real-time feedback to your product. And the use of stat rewards will boost the motivation of your users to complete or proceed with a challenge or task. No one likes to fail. So how is that gamers can spend 80% of the time failing and still love what they are doing?  — Jane McGonigal In the previous episode, I talked about the basic motivation principles for setting up a great gamification model. In this one, I would like to tell you what I learned about failing and why it is a critical element in gamification. Nicole Lazzaro is a games researcher, and in one of her researches she found out that, gamers spend nearly all their time failing. Four out of five don’t finish a mission or quest, run out of time, and have to start all over. And gamers enjoy failing. And the most interesting thing here is that when we play a well designed game, failure does not dissapoint us. It actually motivates us to try again. ------- Subscribe to my newsletter: https://goo.gl/iEq3Po ------- Podcast Website - https://www.laroche.fm/ My Blog: https://www.eugenesanu.com/ About Laroche: https://www.laroche.co/

The fact that so many people all over the world are ready to spend (in total) 3 billion of hours a week playing games is a sign of something. A sign that the reality we’ve built is broken and the virtual world offers more of what we need. A sign that reality isn’t able to provide us what we need. Games provide rewards that reality isn’t. They are teaching, inspiring and engaging us in ways that reality is not. And unless we do something dramatic in the next decades, half of the population of the planet will spend a lot of energy and devotion to the game world. So we can play around this trend and design products that can help us to improve ourselves. I finished reading Jane McGonigal’s book Reality is Broken and would love to share some thoughts I learned and what we can do better about gamification. ------- Subscribe to my newsletter: https://goo.gl/iEq3Po ------- Available on: Podcast Website - https://www.laroche.fm/ My Blog: https://www.eugenesanu.com/ About Laroche: https://www.laroche.co/

It's an unusual episode for me because previously I was doing my research or taking time to create an episode, and this one is just a couple of ideas I had on my mind recently. And they boiled too much so I decided to share them with you. Too many people are rushing the process in the hope of creating something great and in the end all they get is more problems with their product, etc. Or sometimes they plan too much without actually getting anything out. Or they set themselves audacious goals that only intimidate them which in the end ruins the entire project. It's a question of what balance are you able to keep. The Problem With Online Reviews - Laroche.fm - Ep.34

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2018 20:24

There is a problem with online reviews and I want to hear it out. We have to start designing better online behaviour, because the current one leads to some bad incidents. For example, I often take my coffee at a place with a 3 stars rating on Google, but it serves one of the best coffees in the city. The reviews come from two people who had once a bad experience. And Google shows to everyone that it has 3/5 stars without saying that it is one the best places to have a non-Starbucks, coffee. Some companies keep manufacturing certain products only because 10 years ago they received so many 5 stars on Amazon, that it’s almost impossible to retire the product. My Uber score is 4.7, and the only “bad thing” I do is the lack of conversation with my driver. I always say “Hello”, “Thank you”, “Goodbye” and leave some tips. So apparently for not talking you still get a low score. Once I was working for an e-commerce shop, and I was having a discussion with a customer about his shopping experience. He gave 3 stars to a product because the delivery guy was rude to him. Meanwhile, the delivery company has nothing to do with the shop itself. And of course, you can’t blame him. But it’s our job to make it harder for people to leave delusional feedbacks and encourage more well-thought and constructive criticism. On this episode, I will talk about a recent article I wrote on Medium called - Stop Asking Users What They Want. It seemed as an interesting topic to me that a lot of companies base their decision making solely on the research they just did about their customers. I believe that this is not the best approach and there is a better way to go about it. Hopefully, this short episode will bring you some value on how to approach user research. ------- Subscribe to my newsletter: https://goo.gl/iEq3Po ------- ------------ Medium article: https://goo.gl/coFGYY Follow me on Medium: https://medium.com/@eugenesanu About me: http://eugenesanu.com/ About Laroche: https://www.laroche.co/ Podcast: https://www.laroche.fm/

Product Roadmaps Suck - and how to make them better - Ep. 21 Laroche.fm

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 11, 2018 17:32

In this podcast episode, we will dive into why product roadmaps suck and how we can make them better. --------- What should our product team work on today? The answer is usually on your product roadmap. It contains a list of features, ideas, tasks to do, small and big projects and multi-team efforts that must be achieved. Along with that, all of them have a deadline. So everyone can grab a task from the roadmap and not worry about what to do next. The problem is that in this case, we focus on business output than the outcome. We focus on the next feature to build and timeline rather than focusing on: what business problem are we solving? What customer problem are we solving? How we make their lives better? How is it adding value? ------- Subscribe to my newsletter: https://goo.gl/iEq3Po ------- --------- Support the podcast on Patreon: http://patreon.com/laroche --------- ---------- About me: https://www.eugenesanu.com/ Medium blog: https://medium.com/@eugeniuesanu Podcast: https://www.laroche.fm/ Laroche: https://www.laroche.co/

How Not to Design a Product Like Everyone Else’s - Ep. 19 - Laroche.fm

A quick rant about what we are getting wrong about product features when designing a product and what we should do instead. This podcast episode was an article that I published on my Medium blog.  For a more in-depth analysis of this topic, go an read the article. ------- Subscribe to my newsletter: https://goo.gl/iEq3Po ------- Medium: https://medium.com/@eugenesanu About me: http://eugenesanu.com/ Laroche: https://www.laroche.co/ Laroche.fm: https://www.laroche.fm/ ----------- Have you ever been searching for a product that could solve your needs but could not choose one because all somehow look the same? Or it becomes harder for you to choose between 2 services because they offer the same features? The only thing that differentiates them is their design, but even that somehow becomes the same. So why do all products on the market look the same with little difference? Before I answer that question, would like to clarify something. To create a great product that solves a need, you must have a human-centred design approach for that. An HCD process is an ideal state that all aspire to, but almost nobody gets there. Most companies can’t get to that state because they have a disease called featurist. What is the primary symptom? Constantly adding features to your product.
