1 Corinthians 131 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Welcome to a special edition in honor of Tzom Gedaliah ( צוםגדליה ), the Fast of Gedaliah. This day is a potent reminder of a tragedy that occurred following the destruction of the First Temple. Today, we commemorate the assassination of the righteous leader, Gedaliah ben Ahikam ( גדליהבןאחיקם ). His death was the final blow to the remaining Jewish community in the Land of Israel ( ארץישראל ), forcing them into exile and marking the end of the last vestiges of Jewish life there. The Dangers of Habit: Lessons from Gedaliah In his book on the Days of Awe ( ימיםנוראים ), Rabbi Nosson Wachtfogel brings forth a powerful concept: Rosh Hashanah ( ראשהשנה ) is not just about shedding bad habits; it's about renewing ourselves, even in our good deeds. The greatest pitfall, he argues, is continuing a positive behavior simply out of habit. This, Rabbi Wachtfogel explains, was Gedaliah's tragic mistake. He was warned of a plot to assassinate him but dismissed the warning, relying on his ingrained practice of never accepting slander ( לשוןהרע ). He failed to re-evaluate the situation and realize that this specific instance of gossip ( רכילות ) was permitted for a greater, life-saving reason. This rigid adherence to a pre-existing, even positive, behavior—without re-analysis—led to his death and the further exile of the Jewish people. This teaches us a crucial lesson: Don't remain stuck in old habits. Habit is the opposite of the essence of Rosh Hashanah, which demands we become a new creation ( בריהחדשה ). When Routine Becomes Rote This idea is beautifully illustrated by a story about the Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum. At a Chasidic wedding, a gifted jester ( בדחן ) who was known for his imitations asked the Rebbe for permission to mimic him. The Rebbe, with a smile, granted the request. The jester then proceeded to impersonate the Rebbe's unique way of shaking the lulav and etrog ( לולבואתרוג ). Everyone laughed, but in the middle of the performance, the Rebbe burst into tears. The jester's face turned pale as he rushed over to beg forgiveness, terrified that he had caused offense. "No, no," the Rebbe assured him. "You did nothing wrong." "Then why are you crying?" the jester asked. "I said to myself," the Rebbe explained, "'If you can copy the Satmar Rebbe, well, maybe I'm just copying the Satmar Rebbe, too.'" The Rebbe feared that his own prayer movements, once filled with sincere intention, had become nothing more than a mechanical imitation of the way he had prayed in his youth—a rote performance rather than an act of genuine connection. This is the danger of מצוותאנשיםמלומדה , or doing mitzvot by rote. Breaking Free of the Elephant's Rope Another powerful story highlights this point. A man once observed a group of huge circus elephants restrained only by a small rope tied to their front legs. Puzzled, he asked the trainer how it was possible that such powerful creatures didn't break free. The trainer explained, "When the elephants are small, we tie them with these same ropes, which are strong enough to hold them at that age. As they grow, they are conditioned to believe the rope can still hold them back. They never even try to break free." We, too, must break free from our "elephant rope." We may be conditioned to act a certain way, but we must constantly reassess our actions and not get stuck in the mindset of "that's just the way I do things." A Call to Action Therefore, as Rabbi Wachtfogel teaches, after Rosh Hashanah, there must be a tangible change in our lives—in our prayers, our learning, and our interactions with others. This requires a profound re-analysis of our daily routines to ensure our actions are driven by genuine renewal, not simply by old habits. A practical takeaway for this day of Tzom Gedaliah is to set aside some time to evaluate your own habits. Which routines are serving you well, and which ones could use improvement? Have a wonderful rest of your day.

Wendy was feeling a little left out. During lunch break, her boss had left chocolates on everyone’s desks—except hers. Puzzled, she lamented to a friend, “Why did he leave me out?” When asked, their boss explained: “Those chocolates are still good, but they’ve been around for some time. Wendy’s pregnant, so I just wanted to play it extra safe.” Then he laughed. “As for the rest of you . . . .” The little incident became a running joke in the office, but it got me thinking about how we sometimes misread God’s intentions because of our limited understanding and perception. We may even believe ourselves to be victims of unfair treatment, forgetting that God always has our best interests at heart. Always. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that while we may not fully understand God’s thoughts and ways, we can be sure that they’re “higher than our ways” (v. 9). Ours are often influenced by selfish desires; His are perfect, compassionate, and righteous. So, even when things don’t look good for now, we can trust that God will provide what we truly need (vv.1-2), for He is loving and faithful to His own everlasting promise (v. 3). Let’s “call on him while he is near” (v. 6), knowing that He’ll never leave us.

1 Corinthians 12:12-2712 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don't need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don't need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

We know that the essence of a person is his Neshama . The body is merely a casing, and death simply means that the person comes out of that casing and continues to live — just in a better place. There isn't even one split second when a person is not fully alive. The moment of death is only the moment when the casing is removed. Sometimes, we are privileged to see clearly — even in this world — the eternity of the Neshama. A rabbi once related that many years ago, he was hired by a shul to give a series of classes, for which he was promised $2,000 upon completion. He gave the shiurim, but the payment never arrived. The president of the shul told him that the check would come in the mail, but apparently, it slipped his mind — because it never did. About a year later, the rabbi happened to meet the shul's treasurer. They made small talk, and during the conversation, it came to light that the rabbi had never been paid. The treasurer was horrified and told the rabbi that he would personally take care of it and get reimbursed by the shul. He then took $1,000 out of his own pocket and handed it to the rabbi. Before parting, he said, "I personally guarantee you will get the second $1,000 as well." Just a few days later, the treasurer became very sick. He was hospitalized and, tragically, passed away within two weeks. Some time afterward, the rabbi of that same shul called the original rabbi to his office. As soon as he arrived, the rabbi handed him an envelope with $1,000. "This," he said, "is from the treasurer who recently passed away." Puzzled, the rabbi asked, "How did you know about the treasurer's promise? No one else knew — only he and I." The rabbi replied, "My wife had a dream. The treasurer appeared to her and told her he wasn't allowed into Gan Eden because of an unpaid promise. He asked that the money be given right away to fulfill his word." There was no way anyone could have known about that promise — except if the treasurer had truly come back from the next world to make things right. When a person passes away, his life does not end. He simply relocates — to a far better place. A man shared the following story that he heard firsthand from someone named Reuven. Reuven said that in Poland, during the Holocaust, a man lost his wife and was left raising their only son alone. At one point, they were separated, and the father was forced to flee for his life. He was almost certain that his three-year-old son had not survived. Four years later, one night, the man's wife appeared to him in a dream. She told him that their son was still alive and he must go find him. At first, he dismissed it as just a dream. But then it happened again. The father returned to his hometown and discovered that a righteous gentile had rescued several Jewish children during the war. He tracked this man down, entered his home — and there he saw his seven-year-old son. He recognized him immediately. ברוך ה׳ , he was able to raise his son in Torah and mitzvot, and eventually, the boy grew into a man who built a beautiful Torah family. Reuven concluded, "I know this story is true — because I was that seven-year-old boy. It was my mother who came to my father in a dream and told him I was still alive." The next world is very real. As it says in קהלת : וְיָשֹׁב הֶעָפָר עַל הָאָרֶץ כְּשֶׁהָיָה וְהָרוּחַ תָּשׁוּב אֶל הָאֱלֹקים אֲשֶׁר נְתָנָהּ — "And the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it." If a person fulfills his mission in this world, he will experience the greatest bliss — for all eternity

It was a morning commute Chris Greiner had made hundreds of times before. Living in old Shanghai and working in the city's sleek business district, Greiner's daily drive to the Jin Mao Tower often stretched well beyond an hour. But on this particular day, his driver told him they'd arrive in just 30 minutes. Puzzled but intrigued, Greiner went along—only to discover the traffic patterns had shifted. “They repainted the lines,” the driver told him with a grin. The same bridge, same road—just used differently.Greiner never forgot the lesson. As CFO of Zeta Global, he often draws from that experience when approaching business challenges. “You might be fixed in your infrastructure, but there's almost always another way through,” he tells us.That mindset is now shaping Zeta's evolving AI strategy. Rather than applying AI for efficiency's sake, Greiner tells us his team follows the real patterns of work—starting with customer behaviors. “We began by observing how marketers use our platform,” he says, “then built automations to eliminate keystrokes and surface next-best actions.”Now, the finance function is adopting the same approach. Greiner's team is analyzing daily tasks across accounting, FP&A, and sales operations to identify which can be codified and automated. Zeta is building agent-based workflows that transform data into actionable insights—at the push of a button.“We're letting the work show us where to go,” Greiner says. And like that rush-hour bridge in Shanghai, sometimes a better route is just a few new lines away.

1 Corinthians 11:27-3427 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. 34 Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment.

Theme From Sunday's Sermon: Salvation: God's Solution to Sin On this edition of One Single Story, Pastors Stephen Mizell, Jay Rivenbark, and Alyssa Bream discuss the following questions: During our Bible reading today, there was a little detail that jumped out at me for some reason. When King Herod heard about Jesus, why was he puzzled? What was he confused about? So, do you think that Herod was puzzled only because he was keeping an eye on Jesus for fear that he might be leading a political rebellion? People are not converted by the principles of Jesus' teaching, or His miracles, or even by the lifestyle that His disciples live. Conversion requires the work of the Holy Spirit. Why do you think this is the case? Have you ever fallen into the trap of trying to "argue" to someone into the Kingdom of God? The reading for the day is: Deuteronomy 16:1–17:20 Luke 9:7-27 Psalm 72:1-20 Proverbs 12:8-9

1 Corinthians 11:17-2717 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good.18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. 22 Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter! 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 11:2-162 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.

Evolutionary psychologist, Doug Lisle, PhD discusses listener questions with host, Nathan Gershfeld.  In today's show, we discuss a recent survey reported by survey artist, @Aella_Girl (on X).  This survey reveals some interesting deductions about human mating difficulties in finding our “Magic 10%”. Dr. Lisle explains what the term “Magic 10%” means, and we then go over 2 listener questions – the first is whether sexuality is learned or conditioned, specifically bisexual fantasies, and then our last question is about a family member whose recent cancer diagnosis has caused them to act in a puzzling way.  0:00 Teaser Clips & Intro 2:05 Aella_Girl has conducted a survey with very interesting results 15:32 Attractiveness rating 2D vs 3D 22:32 Innate delusion makes it hard to find a mate, but when you do it feels amazing 28:05 What is “the Magic 10%”? 41:05 Identifying as a heterosexual woman but still being aroused by women I identify as heterosexual but I find myself to be more sexually aroused by women's bodies than men's, even though I only date men in a romantic setting. Even when I'm with my boyfriend, I have to fantasize about naked women in order to orgasm, but I could not imagine courting or being courted by a woman. Am I so attracted to the female body because as a society we have been conditioned to view the female body as a sexual object regardless of our sexual orientation? Ever since I was a child, all I saw on tv was sexy females in movies advertisements, etc. Could this have affected my sexual orientation, like if I was born straight, could media influence have skewed me a bit toward homosexuality? I know it is common especially for women to be aroused by both sexes. Or am I just a closeted bisexual? 51:33 Family member with aggressive cancer making rash decisions My family member was recently diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and has less than 6 months to live. She is young (in her 30s) but appears to have made peace with this reality and is happier than I have ever seen her. She wants to continue to live her life normally, but in the last few weeks she has made some rash decisions (like ending the relationship she was in, her boyfriend was planning to propose and was left extremely confused).  I am very shocked by her reaction and her peace with everything, as I am struggling. Many other family members and her close friends feel the same way. We want to be more present in her life but she insists on keeping us at a distance and continuing to live just as she did before. How can I change my perspective and also make peace with not treating her differently? 56:28 End   X: @BeatYourGenes Web: www.beatyourgenes.org Doug Lisle, PhD www.esteemdynamics.com Nathan Gershfeld, DC www.fastingescape.com Intro & outro song: City of Happy Ones • Ferenc Hegedus Licensed for use Copyright Beat Your Genes Podcast

Bible Reading: Philippians 2:3-8Tristan beamed as he picked up a shoe from the display table. "This is the kind I want, Mom! All the guys are getting shoes like this. The special soles reduce the pounding you get from the gym floor." Tristan imagined what his friends would say if he showed up at practice wearing these shoes. He looked at his mother hopefully, but she was moving away."How about this one?" Mom held up a shoe similar to the one Tristan was holding.Tristan made a face and shook his head. "Nobody buys that brand."Mom sighed in exasperation. "Tristan, I want to buy shoes you like, but I'm not going to pay a lot of money just so you can have a certain brand.""But I don't want any other shoes!" "Then you can get along with your old ones," Mom said, and she hurried him out of the store."Who was at the door?" asked Mom later that night as she was cooking dinner."It was Joey," Tristan said with a scowl. "He just came to show off his new skateboard. He just got one a few months ago, but he bought another one. He just got it to impress the guys."Mom looked surprised. "So we shouldn't buy things just to impress others?" Puzzled, Tristan shook his head. "Of course not." "But weren't you wanting to do the same thing with those shoes today?" asked Mom. "Didn't you want that brand just to impress other kids?"Tristan looked at the floor. "Well…maybe." Mom sighed. "I understand what it's like to want nice things, Tristan. But when we want to get things just to impress others, we need to remember where our worth comes from. People's opinions of us can change from one day to the next--they're fleeting, just like the things we own, which will eventually wear out or get lost or broken. But God's opinion of us never changes. Our value comes from the love He showed us by sending Jesus to save us from sin."Mom put a hand on Tristan's shoulder. "Instead of trying to impress people with what you have, let them know you by the way you treat them and show them God's love. They should know you by your heart, not your shoes." –Cynthia Y. Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8"That doesn't go there, Jamar," Aisha chided, taking the jigsaw puzzle piece out of her baby brother's hand. "Put it here." She showed Jamar how to use the piece to complete the orange fish. Instead of doing what Aisha told him, however, Jamar put the piece into his mouth. Drool dribbled down his chin."Stop that!" Aisha exclaimed. "You'll ruin it." She snatched back the puzzle piece and jammed it into place. She was beginning to regret agreeing to play with Jamar. Sometimes he could be a real pain."Be patient, Aisha," Mom said. She was watching them from the door. "He's only two, after all.""But this is taking forever," Aisha moaned. "I'll just do it myself." She picked up two more of the wooden puzzle pieces and began putting the puzzle together alone.Mom came into the room and sat down beside them. "Give him another chance, Aisha," she urged.Aisha didn't see the point, but she handed a piece to her brother. "Put this piece over there, Jamar," she said.At first Jamar held the piece upside down, then backwards. But eventually, he turned it over and put it into place. Aisha clapped her hands excitedly. "Good job, Jamar!" Jamar beamed with pride. Aisha forgot about being frustrated with her baby brother for a moment, and together they finished the puzzle. As soon as they were done, Jamar lost interest and toddled off to play blocks. "You know," Mom said, "watching you and Jamar reminds me of how I feel with God sometimes."Aisha frowned. "Really?""I feel impatient when things in my life don't change as fast as I want them to," Mom explained. "It can be hard to wait for His answers instead of trying to force my own way. But we can trust God with the end result."Mom turned the finished puzzle around. Aisha smiled down at the colorful picture of silly sea life. It was still a little soggy from being in Jamar's mouth, but it looked much better than the jumbled mess of pieces it was before. "Even though we're not always patient, God is patient with us," said Mom. "He is patiently working in our hearts to make us more like Jesus, and we can trust Him to fit all the pieces of our lives together." –Christa HoganHow About You?Do you have trouble being patient? Even adults have this problem sometimes. But patience is important in life and in our faith. God loves us, and He is always at work, even if we can't see what He's doing. He's patient with us as we grow, and we can trust that the end result will be worth the wait.Today's Key Verse:The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride. At 16, Dylan Schneider left his small town and moved to Nashville, becoming one of the first artists to go viral with cover songs on YouTube. Now, he's opening up like never before. With a close bond to country star Kane Brown, who also got his start virally, a Top 5 hit with Dustin Lynch, and a debut album that's brutally honest, Schneider dives deep into the heartaches that shaped him. Puzzled explores his dad's battle with addiction, a brutal breakup, and the fresh hope of new love. The album, co-written entirely by Schneider, is filled with stories only he could tell—especially in tracks like “Better Than You Left Me,” set to drop in January.
