The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
In this deeply personal and refreshingly raw episode of the Dad Edge Podcast, I'm joined by my incredible wife, Jessica Hagner, for a long-overdue conversation that many of you have been asking for. After years of encouragement (and a little nudging), Jessica stepped up to the mic to help me share the real, behind-the-scenes story of our 22-year marriage. We go back to the early days of college, reliving the awkwardness of our first kiss and my embarrassing (but strategic) attempt to get her on a student committee just to spend time with her. But we don't just stay in the past. We dive deep into the challenges of our early marriage, the struggles I had showing up as a husband and father, and how Jessica's unwavering grace, direct but loving communication, and deep emotional strength helped pull us through. From parenting four boys to rediscovering connection after disconnection, we explore how we've stayed aligned, what we've learned, and why our friendship is the real heartbeat of our relationship. Whether you're a husband, wife, parent, or someone navigating the messy middle of a relationship, this episode will speak to your heart and give you practical hope that real love is always within reach, if you're willing to work for it. TIMELINE SUMMARY [1:34] - Jessica joins the podcast for the first time—and how long it took to convince her [4:35] - The (disastrous) first kiss story from both our perspectives [10:22] - My clever scheme to get Jessica on the student committee [13:36] - Celebrating 22 years: reflections on young love and early marriage [16:05] - My struggles early on as a husband and father [20:48] - Jessica's thoughtful, respectful way of expressing hard truths [26:02] - A rough week of disconnection—and why we refuse to let it linger [29:30] - How we sense and address emotional distance before it becomes dangerous [35:31] - Replacing blame with grace: the power of constructive feedback [38:01] - Jessica's journey through self-image and how we supported each other [40:35] - Our secret weapon: friendship as the foundation [44:12] - Creating emotional safety in a marriage [46:40] - Reflections on sobriety and emotional consistency [47:17] - The role of counseling and shared tools in sustaining growth [50:21] - That time we tried swing dancing—and what it taught us about trying new things 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS Marriage Is Built, Not Found Strong relationships don't happen by accident—they're intentionally created through effort, vulnerability, and consistent choices. Love is less about fate and more about foundation, and we've learned that every season of growth requires patience and partnership. Grace Changes Everything Jessica's ability to express concerns with love instead of criticism shaped how I received them—and how I grew. Her grace didn't minimize the message; it softened the delivery so that it could be heard. When grace leads, growth follows. Friendship Is the Foundation Beyond intimacy and partnership lies a deep friendship. We laugh, challenge, and enjoy one another—whether we're hitting the gym or sitting in silence. That comfort and camaraderie anchor us in hard times and elevate the everyday. Disconnection Is a Signal, Not a Sentence We all drift sometimes—but we've trained ourselves not to tolerate that drift for long. Disconnection is simply a call to reconnect. We address it, own it, and rebuild before it becomes a pattern. Shared Growth Sustains Love What keeps us aligned is our shared commitment to grow—individually and as a couple. From therapy to new hobbies, we make space for evolution. That growth keeps the relationship fresh, resilient, and deeply fulfilling. In this powerful second part of my conversation with Dr. Ronnie Kent and Dr. James Kent, authors of The Anxiety Algorithm, we dig deeper into how faith, mindset, and God's presence can transform anxious patterns into lasting peace and joy.The Kents share how abiding in Christ—not striving—produces the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. We talk about how the Holy Spirit shields us like “filter paper,” allowing only what shapes us into Christ's likeness to touch our lives, and how to apply the Anxiety Algorithm in real-time—even during the everyday stressors like parenting, finances, and yes, even pickleball matches! We also explore the secret of true contentment and long-term wellness, plus how God invites us not just to survive anxiety but to thrive with a renewed sense of joy and freedom.Whether you're facing everyday worries or long-standing battles with fear, this episode offers practical hope rooted in Scripture, brain science, and the peace only God can bring.Key Takeaways:Abiding in Christ—not striving—produces true spiritual fruit like peace, patience, and self-control.God shields us from more than we realize, using every challenge to grow Christlike character. The Anxiety Algorithm isn't just for anxiety—it applies to anger, depression, loneliness, and beyond.Memorizing Scripture gives the Holy Spirit “ammunition” to redirect our thoughts in anxious moments.True contentment, as Paul described in Philippians, is a learned posture—and it's possible for all believers.Effort matters to God—He cheers our perseverance more than our performance or “wins.”Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Anxiety Algorithm01:55 Applying the Algorithm in Daily Life10:06 Visualization and the Holy Spirit15:15 Long-Term Wellness and Contentment21:22 Goals and Takeaways from the ConversationBUY THE BOOK HERE OR PEEK INSIDE:Anxiety Algorithm https://amzn.to/44GQ8mtConnect with Ronnie and James: https://journeywise.network/anxiety-algorithm/CONNECT WITH VICTORIA:*NEW RELEASE: Pickleball Passion A Marriage Devotional: 21 Days to a Stronger Connection on and off the Court https://amzn.to/48wnvaV*CHOOSE 2 THINK 365-DAY DEVOTIONAL: https://amzn.to/3Hcl7v1*CHOOSE 2 THINK JOURNAL: https://amzn.to/3WvinNDEMAIL: choose2think@gmail.com PODCAST WEBSITE: www.choose2thinkpodcast.comMINISTRY WEBSITE: www.choose2think.coMENTORING: www.choose2think.co/coaching.html FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/groups/choose2thinkINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/victoriadwalkerlydon/*When you click on these Amazon affiliate links, I may earn a teeny commission from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. Dale Walsh has faced—and transcended—one of the most formidable mental health challenges: schizophrenia. His journey from the depths of psychosis to a place of clarity and purpose informs every aspect of his work. Through his unique "inside-out" perspective, Dale coaches families of individuals living with serious mental illness, helping them bridge emotional gaps and navigate their daily challenges with empathy and strength.Dale creates a nonjudgmental space for those often referred to as the “forgotten victims of mental illness”—the family members, caregivers, and loved ones who struggle to maintain connection. His method, called LIVELOVE (Learn–Integrate–Validate–Explore / Listen–Observe–Value–Express), offers not only a roadmap for meaningful dialogue, but a chance to reclaim personal identity in the midst of caregiving fatigue. This conversation honors both the pain and resilience that shape mental health narratives—and shines a light on the power of coaching, compassion, and lived experience.Dale Walsh's SitesOfficial Website: http://www.dewlivelove.net/ Instagram: http://instagram.com/dale.walsh.14 Calendly: https://calendly.com/dalecoach55OTR sites:Podcast Website: https://bobadleman.wixsite.com/otrmentalhealthMail: OvertheRainbowbob@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/otrachievingmentalhealhfrInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/over_the_rainbow_achieving X: https://twitter.com/overtherain1bowYouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChEYTddPDUaiZbFliit1r5Q LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-adleman/This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podder - https://www.podderapp.com/privacy-policyPodtrac - https://analytics.podtrac.com/privacy-policy-gdrp
Re-Releasing my old episode with the great Geoff Thompson, whose bestseller, "Watch My Back" was. Apivotal book for me, first reading it as a teenage martial artist in England. Geoff is a man who has lived many lives. In his earlier years he worked on some of the toughest “doors” in Coventry, as a Bouncer, sometimes literally fighting for his life to protect the innocent against the violent (four of his colleagues were murdered during this time). He went in to become the prolific author of over 50 books, an award-winning film maker, a spiritual teacher, and has been a life-long martial artist. Geoff wrote two books solely about fear: both overcoming fear and developing a strong mindset to face challenging situations. I remember reading these back when I was fighting in MMA to get my mind ready for combat, but his writings on overcoming fear are useful in almost any endeavor, especially the fear of being an entrepreneur with no steady paycheck. Geoff has empowered countless people to not only face their fears and improve their personal safety, but to lead happier, more confident lives. And that is what martial arts is about. Leading better lives. Until next time, love and good vibes. Send me a text! I'd LOVE to hear your feedback on this episode! My guest is Dr. Bruce Dorr, MD, OBGYN & Senior Medical Advisor for Biote. We talk menopause & also discuss the article from the NY Times released on February 1, 2023 Women Have Been Misled About Menopause. The conversation around menopause is changing dramatically, but are women getting accurate information about what's actually happening in their bodies? Dr. Bruce Dorr, a board-certified OBGYN specializing in hormone optimization, joins Sandy to challenge widespread misconceptions and reveal what many women aren't being told about their changing hormones. This eye-opening discussion ventures far beyond hot flashes to explore how hormone imbalances affect virtually every bodily system. Dr. Dorr explains the shocking finding that joint pain—not hot flashes—tops the list of menopausal symptoms, and why so many women mistakenly attribute their discomfort to "just getting older." You'll discover the critical connection between hormone levels and brain health, including recent research linking hot flash severity to brain lesions similar to those found in Alzheimer's disease. The conversation tackles the infamous Women's Health Initiative study that scared millions away from hormone therapy, with Dr. Dorr clarifying why bioidentical hormones differ fundamentally from synthetic options. He offers a compelling analogy: "Not all estrogen is the same—it's like comparing ethanol to methanol. Both are alcohol, but one helps you feel good while the other can kill you." This distinction proves crucial for women weighing their treatment options. Most powerfully, Dr. Dorr addresses why standard medical care often fails menopausal women, with 60% of OBGYNs prescribing antidepressants rather than addressing hormonal root causes. He explains how pellet therapy works as an alternative delivery system and shares stories of patients whose lives were transformed once their hormones were properly balanced. If you're navigating perimenopause or menopause—or simply want to understand what lies ahead—this conversation provides essential information for making informed decisions about your health and vitality.Support the showPlease rate & review my podcast with a few kind words on Apple or Spotify. In this special Listen and Learn episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast, hosts Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood welcome back Katie Trowbridge, an educator with over 20 years of experience and the creator of the CREATE method. Katie discusses her newly released book, Deeper Thinking in the Classroom, which is designed to guide educators in weaving creative and critical thinking strategies into existing K-12 curricula. She emphasizes that creativity is not just for the arts—debunking the myth that it's a classroom “add-on”—and showcases how curiosity forms the foundation of deeper thinking across all subjects. The CREATE method (Curiosity, Risk-taking, Experience, Attitude, Team building, and Evaluation) provides teachers with practical steps and a clear structure for nurturing student creativity and critical thinking. Katie also talks about her companion book, aimed at helping teachers recognize and cultivate their own creativity both personally and professionally. The conversation highlights the importance of evaluating creativity in classrooms, not just through traditional rubrics, but by involving students in co-creating assessment criteria, fostering self-reflection, peer evaluation, and metacognitive skills. Practical tips and resources are shared, reinforcing the book's hands-on approach, and connecting to topics discussed in previous episodes—making this episode a valuable resource for educators seeking to reinvigorate their teaching with strategies for deeper, measurable creative engagement. Can we trace where Western Civilization went wrong to the 1400s when Filippo Brunelleschi, known for his brazen duomo designs in Florence, Italy, invented the linear perspective that dominated Art, Architecture, and city planning ever since? This almost-photographic perspective of the world around us translated to cities and their people being separated from nature, and the ecosystems that nourish us all, at least that signifies an auspicious moment in history. Some European painters in the early 20th Century, like Picasso and Matisse, challenged this linear perspective and were called Fauves or wild beasts. But do we need more wild beasts, rather than just bad-boy painters from Europe, to overcome these linear perspective machines and heal our relationship with the Earth? On this show recorded in 2014, Shana Nys Dambrot [http://sndx.net], art historian and culture writer from Los Angeles' vibrant art scene, guides us on a romp through these European art movements to trace how we got here and where we are headed. We delve into the question of how environmental and climate activism intertwine with artistic expression. Shana engages in a thought-provoking conversation about the role of art in shaping a better world, exploring the dreams and tangible enactments of new realities. Join us as we confront the big questions: Whose dream? Whose world? What does 'better' truly mean? This episode is not just an exploration of art, but a challenge to the status quo and an invitation to envision a future that includes everyone. Entertainment Television, an entrepreneur, media pioneer, and global brand builder whose journey is nothing short of legendary. Larry grew up in a working-class neighborhood, started as a cable splicer in the tunnels of New York, and went on to redefine how pop culture was consumed across 140 countries. From dodging death threats in 90s Russia to bringing modern storytelling to China, Larry's story shows how unstoppable curiosity and fearless thinking can literally change the world. Today, he continues to build media empires from the U.S. to China — and beyond. From immersive entertainment to podcasting to social impact projects, Larry's career proves that reinvention never ends.
