    RGE Ep.6 - Holly Adomah

This week on Really Good Exposure we have the phenomenal Holly Adomah! Holly is an OFFIE award winning freelance arts marketer, and was the first and last marketing manager at The Bunker theatre (RIP!). Holly is also the founder of Holly's Angels; a team of volunteers who have turned theatre spaces into food distribution hubs since December 2020 to help support local artists and community members who are experiencing hardships. Holly and Meg get into why access to theatre and other arts spaces need to be a right for everyone, not just a luxury the privileged few. We discuss the way theatre has the power to impact social change and why its so important that we aren't just screaming into an echo chamber with audiences. We get into performative activism in the arts, arts nepotism, and how everyone deserves the same basic worker rights/protections, regardless of how much they enjoy their job. Holly talks about how to get the work life balance right as a freelancer (spoiler: its difficult!), the problem with hustle culture and the #TeamNoDaysOff mentality and how she makes working in the arts financially viable despite the unpredictable nature of the industry. We talk about the disappointing backlash theatres faced with Black Out Nights and why these performances are so important, what happened when someone came into a theatre Holly worked at wearing an 'All Lives Matter T-shirt' and why there's still so much work to do to make theatre the inclusive space that it should be. Full disclosure: Holly and Meg both have ADHD and hadn't seen each other in a while when this was recorded, so expect wild tangents, excited interjections, and losing track of time! We believe that women have the right to choose what they do with their bodies and how they make their money, and we also believe that how we choose to use our bodies should never, ever alleviate perpetrators of violence from accountability. Today, we're giving some excellent exposure to Cass Traitor! Cass is a writer, an artist, and a Dominatrix. They are also a freelance feminist journalist who works as an editor for Red Insight (a digital platform for sex workers). Cass also makes live art and short films about mental health, disability, BDSM, sexuality and gender and has been co-devising and performing with the Sex Workers opera (https://sexworkersopera.com/) for 10 years. Meg and Cass talk about the difficulty of breaking into any kind of creative freelance field with no financial support, and how being autistic helped Cass to discover they were an excellent Dominatrix! They also talk about the duality of doing sex work to support their ‘mainstream' creative work, just how much money Meg spent on her Edinburgh show, and why creative work and other non-traditional forms of labour absolutely need to start being respected as legitimate - and vital - forms of work. RGE - EMERGENCY Nordic Model Episode - with Stacey Clare

Do you have questions about how sex work is criminalised in the UK? Are you confused between the difference between ‘Decriminalisation'' (whoo) and ‘Legalisation' (boo)? Do you want to know why sex workers and human rights organisations are against the ‘Nordic Model' of sex work criminalisation, even though it claims to decriminalise the sex worker? THEN YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE BEFORE THE 13th MAY! Hello and welcome to this very important EMERGENCY episode of Really Good Exposure. As you may or may not know, there is currently a government consultation on the UK Police and Crime Bill. Some of the proposed amendments to this bill would mean the introduction of something called the ‘Nordic Model' of criminalising sex work. On the surface this model (sometimes called the ‘End Demand' model) is pitched as a ‘feminist' way to criminalise sex work, because it claims to decriminalise the sex seller and criminalise the sex buyers. However, the Nordic Model has been proven to increase violence against workers every where it has been introduced. This law being implemented in the UK would be incredibly dangerous for sex workers, and would make it easier for perpetrators of violence to harm this already-marginalised group of workers. I invited writer, performer, activist and ex-stripper Stacey Clare to do this emergency episode of RGE so that listeners could not only learn about the Nordic Model, and why it is so dangerous, but also so that they could find information on how to write to the government opposing these proposed amendments to the Police and Crime Bill before the deadline of the 13th May. If you are a feminist, you will inherently believe that women have a right to bodily autonomy, safety at work, and the same human rights as anyone else. Please make your voices heard before 13th May! Find out how to oppose the Nordic model here: https://www.nationaluglymugs.org/safety_content/how-to-respond-to-the-uk-police-and-crime-bill Read why the Nordic Model is so harmful here: https://decrimnow.org.uk/open-letter-on-the-nordic-model Read example written evidence from a national sex worker safety charity on why they oppose the introduction of the Nordic Model here: https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5901/cmpublic/CrimePolicing/memo/CPB05.htm More about Stacey: Stacey Clare is a British writer, activist, and former stripper. She is the co-founder of the East London Strippers Collective (ELSC) to advocate for labor rights, fair treatment, and the destigmatisation of sex work. Stacey is the author of the book ‘The Ethical Stripper: Sex, Work and Labour Rights in the Night-time Economy', which examines the the sex industry. Stacey has also performed at events like the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and given a TEDx talk challenging societal perceptions of sex workers. Stacey runs creative projects like life-drawing classes with strippers as models and is currently preparing to take her show ‘Ask a Stripper' to Brighton Fringe Festival this month (get tickets here: https://www.brightonfringe.org/events/ask-a-stripper-pulling-back-the-g-string ) and back to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August (tickets here: https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/ask-a-stripper-pulling-back-the-g-string ) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ethicalstripper

Meg talks to Cassiah about how the hell you get into directing without going to film school, how Cassiah supports herself as a creative freelancer while also making a pretty daunting industry more accessible to people who can't afford to go to film school, and why it is so important to find joy in creativity that isn't about work. Cassiah shares her tips for breaking into writing/directing, her methods of connecting with other creatives who she learnt from at the beginning of her career, and how to keep yourself sane in an industry that can feel somewhat bleak at times! Cassiah has directed five short films including her recent award-winning BFI Network film 'Catch A Butcher' which screened at multiple BAFTA/BIFA festivals, and was acquired by ALTER and BFI Player.
