Chef Dean Harrison has spent 14 of his 22 years as a chef cooking on superyachts — from a 100-footer that rode out a cyclone in the South Pacific to a 280-footer spending $50,000 a week on provisions. This episode is for anyone who's ever wondered what's actually on the other side of the "yacht life" fantasy, and for any chef weighing whether a different version of this career exists.Register for the free monthly Culinary Leadership Lab @ https://thecheflifebrigade.com/thelab"You need to leave that ego in the restaurant. But honestly, if you can do that, you're going to be a successful yacht chef."The Job Nobody Warns You AboutDean's first yacht job was a six-day crossing from Brisbane to Fiji — and it put him inside the eye of a cyclone for the entire trip. Two sailors racing in the same storm system died and fell overboard. The boat's stabilizers failed, the hydraulics overheated, and the captain hand-steered for 48 hours while the hull rolled hard enough that Dean kept a mask and snorkel by his bed, working out which doors he'd swim through if the boat flipped. That's not the version of yacht life that makes it into the brochure, or the reality show. And it's the story Dean leads with now — not the biggest boat he's worked on, not the fanciest guest — because it's the truest one.Why YachtsTwenty-two years ago, Dean started his apprenticeship at 15 in what he calls "the Gordon Ramsay era" — yelling, getting burned, abusive kitchen culture treated as normal. He wasn't chasing Michelin stars. He was looking for a version of this career that let him travel, get paid what he was worth, and keep his sanity intact. Yachting checked every box he didn't know he was allowed to want. What "Below Deck" Doesn't Show YouOn a superyacht, roughly 70% of the boat belongs to guests — the flowers, the leather, the finishes. The other 30% is crew country: bunk beds, shared cabins, thinner carpet, harsher lighting. You can feel exactly where you cross that threshold. It's not exploitation, Dean is clear — it's just the part nobody photographs. The economics on the guest side are almost absurd by comparison. A week charter on his last boat ran $1.2 million. The chef's food budget alone was $50,000 a week — not because guests eat that much, but because you're provisioning for anything they might ask for, at any hour, with no grocery store to run to mid-ocean. Tips ran $4,000–$8,000 a week per crew member. Which is how you end up getting woken at 3am to make chicken fingers, and being genuinely fine with it.The Village That Gave Him a FreezerThe two places Dean says actually changed him weren't the biggest boats — they were Alaska and Raja Ampat, Indonesia. In Vanuatu, his yacht stopped at a remote village the owners had given solar panels the year before. Dean asked the chief's son the reflexive question — "what do you do for a living?" — and got looked at like it didn't compute."I fish, I grow my vegetables, and I live," the man told him. "I smoke a bit of weed." In the year since the solar panels arrived, the village had built a small economy around freezing fish to sell in town. Dean's takeaway wasn't a lesson about simplicity — it was a correction to the assumption that wealthy people are careless with what they have. He's met, in his words, some of the most generous people he'll ever know, on boats most people will never set foot on.What It Actually CostsThe entry price is almost nothing — an STCW safety course and a basic medical exam run about $1,300 total. The real cost shows up later: missed weddings, relationships that don't survive the distance, and years living in shared cabins with people you didn't choose. Dean calls himself lucky — he started young, with no baggage — but he's honest that the mental toll compounds, especially for anyone who isn't naturally good with people in tight quarters. His one non-negotiable: coffee on deck every morning, watching the sunrise, before the day starts. And a rule he wishes he'd learned faster — know when to leave. "This is bullshit. I don't feel happy waking up every day. I leave," is how he puts it now, after staying on boats longer than he should have more than once in 14 years.Eight Years to Feel Like a Real ChefDespite steady work on increasingly high-end boats, it took Dean about eight years to fully trust that he belonged — that he could walk onto any yacht, read what the guests actually wanted, and deliver it. Now running a coaching program and recruitment agency for yacht chefs, he says the imposter syndrome is gone, not because he became perfect, but because he can see exactly where he went wrong and hand newer chefs a shortcut around it.The One Thing That Still Worries HimNot the storms. Not the isolation. The mental toll of chefs sacrificing themselves for people who, in his words, "couldn't care less if you stay or leave" and "forget about you within a year." Three or four burnouts into his own career, it's the part of the industry he's most focused on changing — both through his coaching and by pushing owners and agencies to actually pay chefs what they're worth.Big appreciation to everyone building something real out of an industry that doesn't always make it easy — this conversation is for anyone quietly wondering if there's a different way to build this career.Chapters00:00 — Cold Open — The Hallway Where the Yacht Changes02:04 — Almost Dying in a Cyclone Crossing the South Pacific06:13 — Welcome, Chef Dean Harrison06:35 — Why Yachts? St. Louis is approximately the temperature of the sun, and the only reasonable goal is to land the plane without setting either the plane or ourselves on fire. Naturally, we immediately fail.Things actually start suspiciously positive when the crew discovers The Rizzuto Show won the St. Louis Magazine A-List honor for Talk/News Radio Show. Nobody knew. Nobody prepared a speech. Nobody even knew when the results came out. Truly the level of professionalism you expect from an award-winning funny podcast and radio show. We celebrate by immediately combing through the other winners and finalists, congratulating friends, questioning categories and proving that even success can become an argument if you give us enough time. Then Moon spots an expired Missouri temp tag, and that harmless observation detonates into one of the great Rizz Show debates: why is getting permanent plates such a ridiculous process? Missouri is working toward eliminating paper temp tags and changing how vehicle sales tax gets collected, which should finally make things easier. There's just one small problem: Rafe casually admits HIS temp tags are expired.Rafe has the paperwork. He has the money. He has the check. What he apparently does not possess is the spiritual strength required to actually finish the process. This leads to his transformation from procrastinating vehicle owner into self-appointed freedom fighter, complete with comparisons to Gandhi that Gandhi's estate would presumably like removed from the record. According to Rafe, this isn't laziness. It's peaceful protest. According to everyone else in the studio: dude, go get your plates. From there, the funny podcast portion of our alleged news operation kicks the doors completely off the hinges.A Minnesota man allegedly decides neighborhood kids cutting across his lawn require homemade spike strips, giving us the “get off my lawn” story to end all “get off my lawn” stories. That sends the show into booby-trap law, trespassing, old farm stories and the landmark legal case of Wet Bandits v. Kevin McAllister. Please note: The Rizzuto Show is not a law firm. This paragraph alone should have made that obvious. Then we meet a Georgia driver accused of trying to run down a jogger after she committed the unforgivable crime of saying “good morning.” Three attempts. One greeting. Apparently mornings have gotten significantly more hostile. And somehow that STILL isn't enough chaos for one episode.Creep Corner arrives with the kind of characters who make you wonder why your neighborhood Facebook group suddenly feels comforting, the Town Crier of Creep Corner gets involved, and eventually we reach FULL CONTACT LEOPARDS, because nature apparently looked at everything humans were doing in this episode and said, “Fine, our turn.”It's celebrity news, weird news, St. Louis nonsense, ridiculous arguments, accidental confessions and the usual collection of tangents that turn a simple story into twenty minutes of grown adults questioning society. In other words, another perfectly normal episode of The Rizzuto Show.If you like daily humor, funny stories, entertainment gossip, unusual news stories, sarcastic humor and watching radio professionals discover potentially important information live on their own show, congratulations: you have found your funny podcast. We apologize in advance.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How temp recruitment is helping property businesses through a cautious market

Between tighter budgets, a fast-growing rental living sector, and clients who simply need great people fast, temporary recruitment has become one of the smartest tools in a property employer's kit. Here's what we discussed, straight from the podcast. What is driving demand for temp recruitment in property? Right now, plenty of clients tell us they have no budget for permanent recruitment. But temp recruitment often sits under a completely different budget line. Businesses still need to operate, and a temporary contractor is frequently the simplest solution. We're also seeing growth in areas like marketing and events, both strong signs the wider market is picking back up. This matches the latest KPMG and REC UK Report on Jobs, which found that UK businesses are increasingly choosing temporary and contract staff while remaining cautious about committing to permanent hires this summer. Why "trial before you invest" works for property employers My colleague Elise puts it perfectly: “trial before you invest.” If you're unsure whether you have the time or budget for a permanent hire, bring someone in on a temp contract first. You pay weekly. If the person works out brilliantly, you can make the role permanent. If the contract simply ends, you've still had the job covered without a long-term commitment. Temp recruitment in the New Homes market Across new homes, sales have slowed. Many clients have responded by opening marketing suites seven days a week, which means they need staff who can cover part-time hours, weekends and holidays. Good candidates often come with a notice period, sometimes four weeks or more. Rather than leave a site uncovered, clients bring in a temp worker to bridge the gap. Occasionally, that temp performs so well they're offered the permanent job themselves. The rise of temp recruitment in Rental Living  Grace Harris leads our temporary rental living desk, covering build to rent, co-living and student living. She joined just over a year ago, and the rental living market has been growing rapidly ever since, with temporary recruitment demand growing right alongside it. What roles do temp workers cover in Build To Rent? Resident hosts and community hosts working front of house and reception Facilities and maintenance staff, including painters and decorators Asset management and portfolio management roles at head office level Why summer is peak season for Rental Living temp staff Student accommodation sees a wave of turnover every summer, with students moving in and out within weeks of each other. Extra temporary support keeps front desks running smoothly during the busiest months. The sector has also had to adapt to the Renters' Rights Act, which received royal assent in October 2025 and introduced significant changes for landlords and tenants across the private rented sector. With so many moving parts, businesses need reliable temp workers to keep operations running.   How to get started with temp recruitment Call our temp desk and tell us what you need We take time to understand your business, not just the job specification We meet and vet every candidate before they go anywhere near a client site Your temp worker can start quickly, often within hours We take this seriously because a temp contractor represents deverellsmith on-site. If they don't do a good job, neither do we. That's why we're just as invested in our contractors as our clients are.   Frequently Asked Questions What is temp recruitment in the property sector? Temp recruitment in property means hiring vetted temporary or contract staff for roles such as marketing, sales, front of house, facilities or asset management. It's usually billed weekly rather than through a permanent salary, giving employers flexibility without a long-term commitment. How quickly can a temp worker start in the UK property market? With deverellsmith's temp desk, we can usually place a vetted candidate within days rather than weeks, because we've already taken the time to understand your business. Can a temporary contract turn into a permanent job? Yes. It's common for a temp worker to prove themselves so well on a contract that the client offers them a permanent position. Many employers now use temp recruitment as a genuine trial period before committing to a permanent hire. Why is temp recruitment growing in rental living and build to rent? The UK rental living market, including build to rent, co-living and student accommodation, is expanding rapidly. This growth, combined with recent renters' rights legislation, has increased demand for flexible temporary staff who can support both frontline and operational roles.   About The Podcast Guests Alice – Business Manager, deverellsmith Temp Desk Alice has spent over five years leading deverellsmith's temp and contract desk, specialising in New Homes Sales, Customer Service and Concierge placements. Summer School: Mel Robbins on Anxiety, Action, and the 5-Second Rule

The Chase Jarvis LIVE Show

Hey friends, Chase here. Every summer, I revisit conversations from the archive that have stood the test of time. Not because I'm nostalgic, but because the best ideas don't expire. They deepen. This is another installment of Summer School—episodes I personally went back to this year when I was stuck. This one with Mel Robbins is near the top of that list. At 41, Mel was unemployed, drowning in debt, and so overwhelmed she could barely get out of bed. Then she discovered something that sounds almost too simple to take seriously: the 5-Second Rule. Count backwards—5-4-3-2-1—and move before your brain talks you out of it. This conversation was recorded roughly eight years ago, well before Mel hit the stratospheric pace the world knows her for now. A mutual friend introduced us. We sat down in the CreativeLive studios. She taught a barnstormer of a class. And the episode stuck with me—because when doubt, delay, and inertia show up, this is the kind of hardcore, no-B.S. toolkit that actually helps you move. Mel calls herself the fucked-up friend who figured some things out and got wise. She doesn't want you to make the same mistakes. She's done the hard work on habit, confidence, self-doubt, and how anxiety becomes a habit that robs you of joy, money, connection, and power. You're one decision away from a totally different life. Summer School: Mel Robbins on Anxiety, Action, and the 5-Second Rule Mel's path wasn't linear. Temp job. Law school by inertia. Public defender in Manhattan. A law firm she hated. Postpartum depression. A decision at her own baby shower that she would never again answer "What do you do?" with "I'm a lawyer." Then radio, media, CNN, speaking—and a TED Talk that accidentally let the 5-Second Rule slip out as an afterthought. She didn't invent the rule as a brand strategy. She invented it in 2008 to beat the snooze button when her life was falling apart: failing restaurant business, financial strain, marriage on the ropes, kids missing the bus, no confidence left in the tank. What makes this episode Summer School material is how practical it is. Mel doesn't just diagnose stuckness. She hands you a tool for the five-second windows where hesitation usually wins—and then she zooms out to the deeper question: action only matters if you know what you want. Passion, she says, is another word for energy. Follow what energizes and expands you. Master the little stuff first, or you'll never answer the big stuff. If you've ever known exactly what to do and still couldn't make yourself do it, this conversation is for you. What You'll Hear in This Episode Why Mel's whole life felt like "one gigantic mistake" she then scrambled—using anxiety—to fix How high tolerance for "suckiness" keeps us trapped until a shock finally forces change An unflinching conversation about anxiety and panic, self-monitoring, and getting help when you need it Why "you don't have to think the way you think"—and how worry becomes a habit that costs you money, health, and relationships The 5-Second Rule explained: how counting backwards interrupts habit loops and kicks the prefrontal cortex online How one decision (just getting out of bed) can change how you see yourself—and start momentum that rebuilds a life Why knowledge can be a trap if you never acquire the tools to make yourself act Listening to your gut—including Mel's decision to keep audio rights when she self-published How to define what you want by tracking what energizes vs. depletes you Why mastering the little stuff is the only path to the big stuff—and why there's enough success for everybody The 5-Second Rule (and Why It Works) Mel is blunt: the rule sounds profoundly stupid. That's why it took people a while to take it seriously. Here's the move. The moment you catch yourself hesitating, doubting, worrying, chickening out, shrinking, or shutting up—count backwards: 5-4-3-2-1. Then move. Counting backwards interrupts habit loops encoded in the more automatic parts of the brain and lights up the prefrontal cortex—the part involved in focus, courage, strategic thinking, and learning new behavior. Counting up doesn't work the same way; you can keep going forever. After one, your mind is socialized to go. She discovered it by accident trying to stop hitting snooze. Eight years later (at the time of this recording), she still used it every morning to get out of bed—and for exercise, tough conversations, client scope creep, drinking urges, tone of voice, middle-of-the-night bathroom trips, negotiations, everything. The deeper point: your life happens in five-second windows. In five seconds you can control what you think, decide what you'll do, and change something that then changes everything. And you're often one decision away from a different life—not because that one decision is magic, but because action changes how you see yourself. Get up three mornings in a row when you usually don't, and you're no longer only the person who sleeps in. You're someone who can keep a promise to yourself. That identity shift compounds. Mel's clearest line on the real problem: most people aren't missing strategy. They're missing the action push. You know how to lose the weight, grow the business, save the marriage, make the call. You can't make yourself do it. The 5-Second Rule is a starting ritual for becoming that person for yourself—your own pushy best friend. What Do You Actually Want? Tools without direction become busywork. Mel keeps returning to this: using 5-4-3-2-1 for its own sake isn't enough if you don't know what you're aligning toward. The common mistake: we fixate on some huge person, place, or thing—a unicorn future that's supposed to rescue us from our current misery. The gap between here and there makes us feel more lost. Her emerging tool (she was still researching it then): treat passion as energy. In any situation, notice within five seconds—does this person, project, or choice energize me or deplete me? Expand me or shrink me? That body wisdom is the map. Hard things can still energize you. Easy things can deplete you. Money comes second. The question is: if it depletes you, how do you move it or say no? If it energizes you, how do you do more of it? Mel noticed even her exploding speaking career started depleting her on travel mornings—while meeting people and answering emails energized her. So she recalibrated toward what expanded her. One five-second alignment at a time, working with your wiring instead of against it. Her hard truth: if you can't master the little stuff—getting up, exercising, curbing the habit, making the scary call—you will never answer the big stuff of who you are and how to listen to yourself. Achievement without fulfillment is just checking boxes forever. And once you're in your lane—energized, expanded—you have capacity to be generous. There's enough success and happiness for everybody. Cheer for other people. Stay calibrated against your own energy map when the internet keeps showing you everyone else's game. Timecodes So You Can Jump Around 00:00 – Welcome and why this episode is part of Summer School 03:27 – Mel joins; early career, inertia, and a high tolerance for suckiness 13:54 – Postpartum depression, quitting law, and making a hard decision 18:00+ – Anxiety, panic, self-monitoring, and getting help when you need it 31:37 – Introducing the 5-Second Rule 38:38 – Where Mel's life was when she invented it—and how one decision changes everything 44:15 – Ego vs. values: self-publishing, bestseller lists, and keeping audio rights 51:16 – How to define what you want (and the trap of the unicorn goal) 53:47 – Passion as energy: the deplete-vs-energize decision tool 58:35 – Master the little stuff or you'll never get the big stuff 01:00:55 – Generosity, staying in your lane, and enough success for everyone 01:04:11 – Diversity in personal development, getting attacked, and pushing through fear Why This Conversation Still Matters We are drowning in information about what to do. Strategy is everywhere. Inspiration is infinite. The bottleneck is still the same: the five seconds between knowing and doing. Anxiety culture hasn't gotten quieter since this episode aired. Comparison hasn't gotten kinder. The gap between the life you want and the inertia you're in still grows when you wait to feel ready. Mel's toolkit remains useful because it's not about becoming fearless. It's about interrupting hesitation long enough to act—and then aiming that action at what actually expands you. Feel the fear. Count backwards. Move. Check your energy. Repeat. That's why I keep returning to this one when I'm stuck. Not for a pep talk. For a push. Keep Going Deeper If this conversation resonates: The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins Mel online: melrobbins.com Follow Mel: Instagram | X/Twitter | Facebook | Website Questions to Reflect On Where do I already know what to do—but keep failing at the action push? What five-second hesitation keeps showing up in my work, health, or relationships? Am I waiting to feel ready before I move? Where has "acquiring knowledge" become a substitute for doing the thing? On my client list, calendar, and inner circle: what energizes me vs. depletes me? What little stuff am I avoiding that is blocking the bigger answers about who I am? Where could generosity replace scarcity—cheering for others while staying in my lane? The Core Idea You don't need a new identity overnight. You need one decision, then another, in the five-second windows where your brain tries to shrink you. Mel's invitation is brutally simple: stop waiting for motivation to arrive fully formed. Interrupt the habit. Count backwards. Move. Align with what energizes you. Build confidence from evidence, not affirmations. And remember—there's enough room for everybody. If there's one lesson worth carrying forward from this Summer School session, it's this: You're one decision away from a totally different life—and that decision can start in the next five seconds.

Reportage International

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 3, 2026 2:28
