Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool discusses the recent efforts to reset relations between South Africa and the United States. President Ramaphosa's recent visit to the White House was a success, the ambassador says. He reflects on the challenges faced during his tenure as ambassador, including the backlash from the Trump administration and the influence of powerful South African figures in the US. He does not regret the candid remarks he made about the state of US politics - remarks that got him expelled from the country. We touch on the legacy of apartheid that continues to affect South African society today. Ambassador Rasool reveals his own experience of living under apartheid. He first tasted teargas as a youngster in 1976 - politics is not a career choice in South Africa he says. He was imprisoned which was when he met Nelson Mandela for the first time, was placed under house arrest and suffered like all non-white South Africans under apartheid. His experiences shaped his views on supremacy and justice. We also discuss the group of wealthy white South Africans who've come to be known as the Paypal Mafia and the influence they are having on U.S policy towards South Africa. How central is Elon Musk's Starlink satellite company to Pretoria's relationship with Washington? Abassador Rasool says that accepting Starlink is integral to Washington's dealing with African countries. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The US says that it's in talks with several African countries that might agree to take in migrants expelled by Washington. FRANCE 24's Fraser Jackson speaks to the State Department about those plans and progress on the Washington-brokered DR Congo peace plans.
In this BizNews Briefing, President Cyril Ramaphosa pushes back against claims of white Afrikaner persecution, following their controversial resettlement in the US under a Trump-era refugee programme. Gayton McKenzie demands that his department prioritise South Africans for jobs, rejecting foreign hires. Economist Dawie Roodt shares his expectations for next week's national budget, while Afrimat CEO Andries van Heerden discusses a challenging year of financial results. The SABC appeals for R7.3 billion to fulfil its public broadcasting mandate, drawing criticism for diverting commercial revenue. On the global front, Tencent bets big on AI integration despite short-term profit pressures.

On this episode of Random Encounter, it's time to sink into the shadows and brew some tea, because we're talking about Assassin's Creed Shadows and Wanderstop!Assassin's Creed Shadows is finally here! This long-awaited game has been delayed multiple times over the last year, but was that extra time well spent? Tom is here to tell us his thoughts about the latest entry in the long-running series!Tom also recently played the latest game from The Stanley Parable's Davey Wreden, Wanderstop. What appears to be a simple cozy game on the surface is actually a deep and thoughtful meditation on how to recover from burnout (something I think many of us can relate to, given the last few years). Will it appeal to both fans of the genre and those who are looking for a more narrative-based experience? And finally, Jono gets to chat about an amazing new visual novel from the geniuses at inkle, Expelled! This Tuesday, don't miss a special highlight episode as we gear up for an unforgettable conversation dropping this Thursday.E.Z. shares a powerful testimony of transformation through God's grace. Born in Lebanon, his life nearly ended before it began, as his mother attempted to abort him but was stopped by her doctor. In 1980, Emeal moved to America, where he struggled to adjust. Unable to speak much English, he faced challenges in school, frequently fought, and stole, leading to a troubled childhood. Raised in a culturally Catholic home, he sought to reform himself after his first Holy Communion at eight years old but remained a practical atheist, living a life far from God.In high school, Emeal succumbed to peer pressure. Elected freshman class president, he was expelled for bad behavior and later joined one of the most notorious gangs in the United States for acceptance and belonging. His life spiraled further out of control, leading to expulsion from another school and self-harm. Despite knowing something was missing, he clung to sin, believing he lacked the power to change. One night, while still entrenched in his old life, Emeal reluctantly attended an evangelistic event. There, the worship and message touched his heart. Hearing the gospel of grace for the first time, he realized salvation was a free gift. Overwhelmed, he surrendered to Christ, and his life was instantly transformed. Burdens lifted, Emeal became a new man, and his joy was undeniable. He confessed his sins to his family and began living for Christ, leaving behind his rap career, gang ties, and sinful habits.Emeal's new found faith brought dramatic change. Once an angry and rebellious teenager, he became gracious and forgiving. He returned to school, excelled academically, and led Bible studies, using every opportunity to glorify God. His zeal for evangelism grew, leading him to connect with Ray Comfort, whose ministry inspired him. This connection sparked a new chapter in Emeal's life, eventually leading to his leadership at Living Waters ministry. God also blessed Emeal with a wife. After praying for a partner to comfort him following the passing of his mother, he met Rachel, Ray Comfort's daughter, and knew she was the one. They fell in love, married, and have since celebrated 27 years together with children and grandchildren.Today, Emeal reflects on God's incredible work in his life. From a rebellious youth to a leader in ministry, his story is a testimony to God's grace and power. Emeal sees it as an honor to serve as an ambassador for Christ, using his story to inspire others and glorify God. Send us a textThanks for listening! However, Byrd kept his life on a positive track and is now a freshman at Alabama A&M University. His mother, DeAndrea Byrd, is also using her son’s expulsion as an opportunity to enact change for Black students, who studies show, are disciplined at a disproportionate rate. Margaret Coker, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Current Georgia, talks about her latest article that investigates the reported shortfalls of Georgia Pathways to Coverage.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
