I'm doing something a little different today and revisiting Season 6 where I asked every single guest the same question: “What's one thing HR folks should rethink?” And honestly, I've been in this whole new and rethinking era lately, writing about it in the newsletter, talking about it nonstop on the pod, and it just felt like the right time to bring these answers back because, let's be real, we all need the reminder! Work is changing faster than it's ever changed before, which means the cadence of how we think about things has to change too. Sometimes I genuinely worry that the solutions I built six weeks ago don't even work for today, let alone six months ago! So consider this your dose of inspiration, hearing from some of my favorite guests on all the things we should be rethinking. Hopefully it sparks something in you, or at the very least, makes you feel less alone in the chaos. 00:01:28 - Improving Equitable Operations in Your Org 00:04:01 - Just Be Honest About Your Culture to Candidates 00:13:35 - Embracing People's Passions Outside of Work 00:16:42 - When Leaders Are a Common Blocker to HR 00:18:52 - Finally Holding Leaders Accountable 00:21:55 - Why HR Should be Thought of as a Creative Department 00:23:27 - Addressing Employee Turnover and Going Back to the Basics And if you love I Hate It Here, sign up to Hebba's newsletter! The writer-director Jafar Panahi's new film, It Was Just an Accident, is the second Iranian film ever nominated for multiple Oscars. Panahi is in the United States for the awards season, but soon after, he plans to return to Iran, where he may well be arrested. His co-writer on the film was recently jailed after signing a letter objecting to the deadly crackdown on protests in Iran. Panahi, who also signed the letter, has been sentenced to one year in prison in absentia. His lawyer has said they plan to appeal the sentence. But Panahi doesn't seem afraid. (He made It Was Just an Accident in secret, as he has in the past with other films.) Even with the crackdown in Iran and violence against protesters here in the U.S., he says he still has reason to hope: “I see a greater future. I see from above.” --- Get more from your favorite Atlantic voices when you subscribe. In this Head Noise episode, we're unpacking three very different dilemmas that all come down to trust, discomfort, and self-honesty. We talk about: What to do when you get back with someone who previously ghosted you, and the trust issues won't go away How to build a relationship with your sister-in-law when you fundamentally don't see eye to eye Why you might want to leave a “lovely” boyfriend, and how to know if you're making a mistake or finally listening to yourself This episode covers: Rebuilding trust after being ghosted (and whether it's actually possible) Why good on paper doesn't always mean right for you Fear of regret vs fear of staying stuck Choosing peace over potential If you've ever stayed because you were scared to hurt someone, gone back to someone who hurt you, or felt guilty for wanting something different, this one will hit. As always, Head Noise is about cutting through the emotional fog and helping you make decisions that align with your self-respect. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What happens when grief becomes the catalyst for finally answering a lifelong creative calling? In episode 247 of Joy Found Here, Celeste Fenton shares how losing her husband in 2020 forced her to confront who she was beyond educator, wife, and mother. At 60+, she stopped making excuses and started writing the suspense romance series that had been "chirping" at her for decades. Her journey to self-published author isn't just about books—it's about giving yourself permission to fail, discover who you are, and step out of the "shadow of the but."In This Episode, You Will Learn:(05:53) Leaving a Difficult Childhood Behind(11:07) Divorce, Single Parenthood, and Going Back to School(14:27) The Loss That Changed Everything(14:29) Starting to Write at 60+(15:53) Sharing Her Terrible First Draft(17:59) Finding Her Identity Through Writing(23:16) The Solo Trip to Maine That Sparked It All(40:27) Creating Gabby Hart: A Messy Midlife Heroine(46:26) Shifting from Success to Meaning(49:26) Inspiring Other Women to Pursue Their PassionsCeleste Fenton spent 30 years as an educator and director in adult and continuing education, earning her degrees from Kansas State University and the University of South Florida. She remarried in 1997 to a fellow educator, but when her husband unexpectedly passed away in 2020, that loss became a catalyst. At 60+, grieving and searching for her identity beyond the roles of wife, mother, and educator, Celeste finally answered the creative calling that had been "chirping" at her for decades and began writing seriously in 2021.In this episode, Celeste opens up about the vulnerable process of writing her first draft and discovering parts of herself she hadn't consciously acknowledged. Drawing inspiration from a solo trip to Maine, she created her "Mysteries of a Heart" suspense romance series featuring Gabby Hart—a midlife protagonist navigating family secrets, romance, and mystery. With two published books, "Lost Heart in King Manor" and "Captive Heart at Brantmar Castle," and a third coming in 2026, Celeste's purpose has shifted from seeking success to inspiring others. She now speaks to women's groups about stepping out of the "shadow of the but" and giving yourself permission to try, fail, and discover who you are. We live in a broken world that often enslaves us to a life that's far less than what God created us to live. As 2 Peter 2:19 declares, “For you are a slave to whatever controls you (NLT). God, however, wants to set us free from anything that keeps us from really living. He wants to set us free from our baggage, worries, stress, hopelessness, brokenness, despair, and sin. As we kick off 2026, we're diving into the Old Testament story of the Exodus, which reveals God's overwhelming desire to set His people free. God not only wants to set us free; He desires to see us live free.

Eric Van Buren grew up in Washington, DC in a stable home with hardworking parents and a strong family foundation, but his life took a turn after high school when fighting and drug dealing pulled him into the streets. After being arrested on a state murder charge and beating the case, Eric thought the worst was behind him — until the federal government indicted him on a major drug conspiracy. The feds sentenced Eric to life in prison, and he went on to serve 19 years inside some of the most dangerous federal prisons in the country, fighting to survive both mentally and physically. In this episode, Eric breaks down how a good kid ended up with a life sentence, what day-to-day survival in high-security federal prison is really like, and how he ultimately got his sentence reduced after nearly two decades behind bars. This is a raw, unfiltered story about choices, consequences, and redemption inside the federal prison system. _____________________________________________ #prisonstory #lifeinprison #truecrime #federalprison #survivestory #prisonlife #lockedin #realstories _____________________________________________ Thank you to PRIZEPICKS for sponsoring this episode! Leo Leonardo is a Rhode Island native who got caught up in the system at a young age, facing repeated arrests that pushed him out of school and into the workforce—before turning to selling drugs when legitimate options fell apart. His path led to a federal drug case, time in both state and federal prison, and some of the harshest consequences behind the walls, including segregation (SEG) and maximum-security prison after continued trouble inside. Ernie Leon shares a story of survival, violence, and redemption. Growing up in Arizona, Ernie fell into addiction and gang life at a young age, which led to an armed robbery conviction and time in the Arizona prison system. Matt Runge shares his honest & cautionary life story — from joining the U.S. Army because he didn't know what else to do with his life, to being kicked out of the military and sent to military prison for selling drugs. After his release, Matt explains how he continued down the same destructive path, dealing drugs on the outside and repeatedly landing in both federal and state prison. In this episode, he breaks down the mindset that kept pulling him back into crime, what life was really like inside different prison systems, and how those experiences forced him to confront his choices. This honest conversation dives into military life, prison, addiction, accountability, and the long road to breaking cycles, making it a powerful watch for anyone interested in true crime, prison stories, and real-life redemption. _____________________________________________ #TrueCrime #PrisonStory #VeteranStory #LifeAfterPrison #CrimeAndPunishment #RedemptionStory #FederalPrison #reallifestory _____________________________________________ Thank you to FRONTLINE HEALING FOUNDATION for sponsoring this episode: Visit https://frontlinehealingfoundation.org/ to donate or share their mission. _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction & Guest Background 02:30 Growing Up in North Jersey 06:00 ADHD, School Struggles & Early Trouble 09:00 DJing, Nightclubs & the Party Lifestyle 12:00 High School Expulsion & Losing Direction 15:30 Joining the Army & Being Stationed in Korea 18:30 Club Life Overseas, Drugs & Selling While Enlisted 22:00 First Military Arrest & Getting Busted 26:00 Inside Military Prison: What It's Really Like 30:00 Release, Returning Home & Going Back to Hustling 33:30 New Jersey Arrests & State Prison Experience 39:00 Hustle Mentality & Surviving Prison Life 42:30 Repeat Offenses & Catching a Federal Case 50:30 Federal Prison Life: Hustling, Cards & Food 55:00 Release, Club Work & Finding New Hustles 01:00:00 South Carolina Arrest & Another Prison Stretch 01:10:00 Parole, Final Sentence & Looking Back 01:15:00 Life After Prison & Lessons Learned 01:18:30 Final Reflections, Regret & Closing Thoughts Learn more about your ad choices.
