Three retired loggers, five encounters, and a run of deep timber none of them could ever explain. In this episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories I share firsthand Sasquatch accounts I gathered over the better part of two years from three men who spent their working lives cutting timber across the Pacific Northwest and the Mountain West in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.You'll meet them by first name only, the way they asked, as Earl, Roy, and Hollis, three plainspoken men with no books to sell and every reason to keep quiet, who finally set the weight of what they saw down in front of me.Earl was a young choker setter in the Oregon Coast Range in 1958 when something started emptying the crew's lunch buckets and turning up in head-high brush twenty feet away, and three years later, in 1961, he was pinned in a wall tent on a Cascade lake while a slow, heavy weight walked the gravel behind his head.Roy was a redwood faller in Northern California in 1963 when he looked up a hillside gallery of old-growth and watched a near eight-foot figure lay its hand flat against a trunk and knock twice, and heard two knocks answer from across the canyon. Hollis worked the Idaho panhandle and western Montana, where eyeshine paced his truck on a one-lane logging road in 1971, and a scream came down off the slope above a river camp in 1974 that emptied that camp by first light. I came up a skeptic, and I went looking for the place each story breaks. These three didn't break the way a made-up story breaks. What surfaces in all of it, from men who never met and never compared notes, are the same small, specific things: the dog that walks backward into the tent, the smell that arrives a beat ahead of the sight, the wood knocks answered across open ground, and a thing that watched men work and chose, over and over, to let them walk away. Listen for the details, and decide for yourself what these old men carried out of the woods.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? We want to hear your story.Email your encounter to brian@paranormalworldproductions.com for a chance to be featured on a future episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories.Backwoods Bigfoot Stories is a paranormal storytelling podcast featuring real Bigfoot encounters, Sasquatch sightings, Dogman reports, cryptid experiences, and true scary stories from the backwoods.Follow the show and turn on automatic downloads so you never miss a chilling encounter from the forest. Shortly after Charles Lyons' body was found, the owner of the 'bawdy house' in which he'd been partying skipped town and was never heard from again. Could she have been his murderer? Or was she an unknown killer's second victim? (Linkville, Klamath County; 1910s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1403a.charles-lyons-murder-myster-of-klamath-falls.html)

What's really happening in the Ozark woods right now, and why aren't more people talking about it? → Join other Ozarkers in our Patreon - The Holler In this episode, we sit down with first-generation logger Roy Pilgrim, a guy who spends more time in the forest than just about anyone. From horse logging with mules to running a modern timber operation, Roy brings a rare, ground-level perspective on the health of our woods. If you hunt, hike, or care about the future of the Ozarks, this conversation will challenge what you think a “healthy forest” actually looks like. Roy breaks down the history of Ozark forests, from fire-shaped oak savannas to today's closed-canopy woods, and introduces the concept of “mesophication,” where shade-tolerant species like maple and elm are quietly replacing oak and hickory. The result? Darker, denser forests with less biodiversity, fewer game species, and long-term unknown consequences. It's a thoughtful, eye-opening look at how removing fire (and stepping away from active management) has reshaped the landscape in ways most people never notice. Together with... We love a good road trip, whether they're planned or not. On this episode of Behind the Mitten, we head out with our portable mics to see what we can find as we travel north of Grand Rapids along the 131 corridor. Located about forty minutes north of GR, Howard City is a small village with a popular destination restaurant. The Forager draws diners from all over for their Great Lakes focused cuisine. We first visited this spot during our search for Michigan's Best Bloody Mary, back when it was under a different name and ownership. We get the scoop on what's on the menu now, and how this vibrant place is both a hot spot for the community as well as welcoming guests from all over.Another stop on our long-ago search for bloody mary's comes up next when we stop a bit further up 131 at Logger's Landing in Luther Michigan. This is a popular, classic, 'up north' style bar that is busy no matter the season. Just steps from multiple snowmobile trails, you'll find all sorts here, as well as excellent pizza. No, you probably aren't that tipsy, it's really just the wooden floor here at Logger's. Next, we head to Mesick, where we make two stops. One is at a fabulous gas station that you may have driven by multiple times on your way to TC, and we'll share why you really should make a stop at Ellen's Corners, located just outside of Mesick where M-37 and M-115 meet at the roundabout. And then head up the road to the Bucksnort Bar in town, where you'll find tasty burgers, a dance floor, and new friends.
When Gwen Trice dug into her family history, she learned that her father had come to Oregon from Arkansas in a boxcar to live and work in the logging town of Maxville. Maxville was once one of the largest towns in the county. It had a post office, hotel, roundhouse and many homes. Nine decades later, a broken down railroad trestle and one building are the only remaining evidence of this company town. The Missouri-based Bowman-Hicks Lumber Company created it in 1923 to house loggers and their families. The company recruited experienced loggers, including immigrants, Native Americans, and Black men from southern states. This was at a time when Oregon’s constitution explicitly banned Black people from the state. Housing and schools were segregated in Maxville, but the workforce was integrated. Even after the town essentially closed down in 1933, some Black families, like Gwen’s, remained in Oregon. You can watch the Oregon Experience documentary focused on Gwen Trice called “The Logger’s Daughter” here and find recent coverage of the archeology dig at Maxville here. And there’s a new multimedia exhibit called “Maxville & Vanport: Hidden Histories of Everyday Life” at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis February 27 through April 11, 2026. In this episode we meet Sebastian Delmont, KI2D, the author of the wildly popular portable logging software Ham2K PoLo (Portable Logger). Sebastian has a passion for portable operating and has built a very modern, feature rich logging application that runs on cell phones and tablets. The application started out focusing on the portable op doing SOTA and POTA. He has added many features including templates for many contests, operator lookup, location sensitive data look up and more. Sebastian plans to expand the scope of software offerings to include desktop versions as well in the future. We had a great time talking with Sebastian as you can tell from the length of the episode. By the end we felt we just scratch the surface.

We are in a bit of a remote, wooded double feature today for Dan's tales. The first of two stories is composed out of what may have been a hermit's final diary entries, as a man living alone in a remote cabin writes of something terrorizing him. Then we hear the legend of the Dungarvon Whooper, a folklore coming from an old logging camp in New Brunswick, Canada. Then Lynze gives us a life long but seemingly harmless attachment. Or is it? What's happening to this person? Lastly, what Dan says is possibly the most horrifying tale he's ever heard from Lynze- what happens when you cannot tell reality from nightmare? Trey Maxwell was a rising star in high school baseball before joining the college ranks. His drive and determination were strong in the sport, but he knew that wasn't going to be his future. Almost 30 years ago, he took his intensity to start a log truck business, married his then-girlfriend Melinda and soon turned that into a logging business. The two from Sarepta have been through the ups and downs of life, but they look to be coming out on top. In 2023, Trey Maxwell Logging was selected Outstanding Louisiana Logger. We get to know them better and talk about the logging business.Minding the Forest is a podcast of the Louisiana Forestry Association and his hosted by LFA Media Specialist Jeff Zeringue. In today's episode of the podcast I talk with a guy from the Upper Peninsula region of Michigan about what the industry is like out that way. Mack works with his uncle mostly logging pro=ivate jobs for small timberland owners. It was a fun conversation about how different logging is depending on where you're at in the country. Mack has a big following on social media and we talked about how social media can be a curse and a blessing, depending on how you use it. If you want to find him online, search "Logger Mack" on every social media platform except "X" (Twitter). Mack is my second guest in a row who also enjoys black coffee instead of energy drinks. Seattle man, Steve Irwin, known for repeated attempts to establish a makeshift mining operation in Dr. Jose Rosal Park, has been arrested yet again. Irwin's latest antics involve using an excavator to dig for gold and construct a cabin within the park, leading to his third arrest in six months for violating a no-entry order. Despite his family's pleas for mental health and addiction treatment, Irwin continues to defy legal constraints, reflecting broader issues with how liberal cities manage such cases. His mother, having not seen him for years and only becoming aware of his predicament through media, insists on rehabilitation over incarceration. This case underlines the failures in addressing the root causes of homelessness and mental health crises, especially in cities like Seattle. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message
