Do you have questions about how sex work is criminalised in the UK? Are you confused between the difference between ‘Decriminalisation'' (whoo) and ‘Legalisation' (boo)? Do you want to know why sex workers and human rights organisations are against the ‘Nordic Model' of sex work criminalisation, even though it claims to decriminalise the sex worker? THEN YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE BEFORE THE 13th MAY! Hello and welcome to this very important EMERGENCY episode of Really Good Exposure. As you may or may not know, there is currently a government consultation on the UK Police and Crime Bill. Some of the proposed amendments to this bill would mean the introduction of something called the ‘Nordic Model' of criminalising sex work. On the surface this model (sometimes called the ‘End Demand' model) is pitched as a ‘feminist' way to criminalise sex work, because it claims to decriminalise the sex seller and criminalise the sex buyers. However, the Nordic Model has been proven to increase violence against workers every where it has been introduced. This law being implemented in the UK would be incredibly dangerous for sex workers, and would make it easier for perpetrators of violence to harm this already-marginalised group of workers. I invited writer, performer, activist and ex-stripper Stacey Clare to do this emergency episode of RGE so that listeners could not only learn about the Nordic Model, and why it is so dangerous, but also so that they could find information on how to write to the government opposing these proposed amendments to the Police and Crime Bill before the deadline of the 13th May. If you are a feminist, you will inherently believe that women have a right to bodily autonomy, safety at work, and the same human rights as anyone else. Please make your voices heard before 13th May! Find out how to oppose the Nordic model here: https://www.nationaluglymugs.org/safety_content/how-to-respond-to-the-uk-police-and-crime-bill Read why the Nordic Model is so harmful here: https://decrimnow.org.uk/open-letter-on-the-nordic-model Read example written evidence from a national sex worker safety charity on why they oppose the introduction of the Nordic Model here: https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5901/cmpublic/CrimePolicing/memo/CPB05.htm More about Stacey: Stacey Clare is a British writer, activist, and former stripper. She is the co-founder of the East London Strippers Collective (ELSC) to advocate for labor rights, fair treatment, and the destigmatisation of sex work. Stacey is the author of the book ‘The Ethical Stripper: Sex, Work and Labour Rights in the Night-time Economy', which examines the the sex industry. Stacey has also performed at events like the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and given a TEDx talk challenging societal perceptions of sex workers. Stacey runs creative projects like life-drawing classes with strippers as models and is currently preparing to take her show ‘Ask a Stripper' to Brighton Fringe Festival this month (get tickets here: https://www.brightonfringe.org/events/ask-a-stripper-pulling-back-the-g-string ) and back to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August (tickets here: https://www.edfringe.com/tickets/whats-on/ask-a-stripper-pulling-back-the-g-string ) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ethicalstripper

This was the final report produced by the Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying. Its chair Michael Healy-Rae opposed the report’s recommendations. Despite a majority of TDs accepting the recommendations, this does not change the law. It will be up to the next Government after the general election to decide whether to legislate for assisted dying. Deputy Healy-Rae spoke to Jerry.

The Clare-based Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Drugs Use insists it's vital the long-term consequences of legalising drugs in other countries is examined before recommendations on the matter are made here. The committee, which was established to deal with the recommendations of the Citizens Assembly on Drugs Use, has this week resumed its discussions on decriminalisation, depenalisation, diversion and legalisation of drugs use. Among the recommendations of the citizens assembly was decriminalising drugs use, in favour of a health-led approach, however it didn't go as far as suggesting legalising drugs use. There have been calls for this in some quarters though and Chair of the Oireachtas Committee, Scarriff Independent TD and MEP elect, Michael McNamara says there's suggestions that doing so hasn't had the desired effect in other countries.

Along with much of the European research community, we're slowly warming up for what FP10 - the next European research framework programme - will look like. Our primary concern, not surprisingly, is what role diversity and internationalisation play. A main consideration, of course, is what is politically feasible, and without naming names - well, we are - some European countries have more conservative views on diversity than we do. So, we decided to look at history and invited historian Kamil Karczweski on the podcast. He has researched LGBTQ+ rights in Poland in the interwar period, and his research showed us that the story is more complicated than you might think. He explains that at the time, Poland was in some ways very progressive by decriminalising homosexuality, one of the first countries in Europe to do so. We talk about homonationalism, what it means and what it might suggest for diversity and internationalisation as FP10 is developed. We also discuss some of the political differences within LGTBQ+ movements - and then we speculate what all of this means when shaping, negotiating and voting on the next European research framework programme. Kamil's research beautifully links personal stories to tell a political story of the past and today. We had him tell us a few details of his work on the podcast. Links to the articles can be found below. You can find Kamil here:University profileTwitterThe three articles mentioned in the episode can be found here:“Call Me by My Name:” A “Strange and Incomprehensible” Passion in the Polish Kresy of the 1920sTransnational Flows of Knowledge and the Legalisation of Homosexuality in Interwar Poland“For a Pole, It all was a Great Abomination”: Grassroots Homonationalism and State Homophobia à la Polonaise—A History Lesson from a Place Between East and WestThanks for listening. Lead Story: Chronic pain, cannabis legalisation, and cannabis use disorder among patients in the US Veterans Health Administration system, 2005 to 2019: a repeated, cross-sectional study The Lancet Psychiatry The prevalence of cannabis use disorder (CUD) in patients with chronic pain is increasing. This study considered the impact of both recreational (RCL) and medical cannabis laws (MCL) on the diagnosis of CUD using a VA population with chronic pain. Results demonstrate that MCL led to a 0.135% increase in the prevalence of CUD. Enacting RCL led to a 0.188% increase in its prevalence. The authors emphasize the importance of these findings and their public health implications, with a focus on clinician monitoring and patient education. The Supreme Court, in a judgement this week refused to give legal recognition to same sex marriages. The court had heard a series of petitions asking for same-sex marriage to be allowed under the Special Marriage Act of 1954 which provides a civil form of marriage for couples who cannot marry under their personal, religious laws. The question before the Court was this: is there a right to marry under the Indian Constitution and is preventing same sex/queer couples from marrying, discriminatory? A five-judge Bench of the Court held that that the SMA was not unconstitutional and could not be read down. The petitioners had also questioned the Central Adoption Regulatory Authority, or CARA's regulations that prevented persons in live-in relationships from adopting a child. Here again, the majority three judges, refused to strike down these regulations. The Central government, had stiffly opposed any judicial recognition of same sex marriages and had said that this was an issue that needed to be resolved by the legislature and not the judiciary. The Court has now shifted the burden to the government, and has directed that a committee be set up to examine the concerns of same sex/queer couples and to see whether the existing legal framework can be amended. Given this setback, what are the next steps that can be taken?
