You know Covid-19 has been a game changer for all of us in similar and different ways. Our life styles have changed. And so I want to talk about 5 Ways to Be Assertive and Say "No" moving forward.Do you find it difficult to be assertive and say "no" to people's requests? Since there just aren't enough hours in the day to appease everyone, the art of saying "no" without hurting the feelings of others is an important skill to acquire. Here are some ways you can say "no" without being rude or impolite:"No" to now, but "yes" to later. "I'm very busy at the moment. Perhaps someone else can help you. If not, I'll have time later in the week to help you out.""No" unless something changes. "I'm very flattered that you've asked me. However, I'm not currently in a position where I can take on this responsibility. Could we talk about this at another time if there's a change in my circumstances?"A definitive "No." "I hate to disappoint you, but I'm not able to do this. I'm afraid I'll overextend myself.""No" to attend an event. "I had a great time before, but I won't be able to make it this time since I'm already overscheduled.""No" to loaning money. "I really wish I could but I make it my practice not to loan money to friends and family."It’s time to live your life on purpose in your purpose so that you can reign in purpose. Contact Lisa at: lisahook@purposebourn.comPurpose Bourn Coaching:https://www.purposebourn.com/Blog: https://www.purposebourn.com/blog-1 FOLLOW US: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisa_hooks_Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LisaHooksLif...Twitter: https://twitter.com/purposebourn

    Develop Emotional Resilience

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 26, 2020 7:52

Emotional resilience is what enables people to bounce back after difficult experiences. Fortunately, this is a skill that you can develop to get through stressful times with greater ease.     I’m going to share some of the benefits of becoming more emotionally resilient and a few strategies for developing this very helpful skill.     First, let’s look at the Benefits of Becoming More Emotionally Resilient:Experience greater happiness. Adversity is to be expected but you can control your emotional reaction. By putting the best face on things, you'll see the opportunities for learning and growth that come with challenging situations. A positive attitude will also help you recover from disappointments more quickly.
Make progress towards your life goals. Complications will arise throughout your life. Being flexible makes it easier to accept and surmount the obstacles that arise in your path. For example, if one scholarship fails to come through, you explore other options for financing your college education.
Strengthen your relationships. People are naturally drawn to happy people. You're likely to have more harmonious relationships if you can keep up your spirits. By contrast, depression often makes others feel like withdrawing.
Protect your physical health. Chronic stress can increase your risk for heart disease, diabetes, obesity and many other conditions. Cultivating a calm mind helps your immune system keep you healthy. Studies show that managing stress can even help you maintain your cognitive functions as you age.
Act responsibly. Under pressure, you may feel tempted to engage in activities that may cause you future harm. Emotional resilience helps you to keep your composure and makes you less prone to saying something that you might regret later.
Boost your self-esteem. Becoming more adaptable helps you accomplish more. In turn, those accomplishments and healthy relationships will help you feel more confident.
Methods for Becoming More Emotionally Resilient:Know your purpose in life. It's a big endeavor, but discovering your purpose in life is fundamental to your ability to navigate challenges. Some people find meaning in their faith traditions and others define it in secular terms. Whatever approach you take, being on a mission keeps you motivated.
Set realistic goals and make specific plans. Some things are beyond your control, but smart planning can enhance your stability. Set goals you can achieve and break them down into manageable steps.
Be aware of your emotions. It's easy to get swept away by strong emotions. If you can be mindful of what you're feeling, you can give yourself room to evaluate the situation before reacting. For example, rather than exchanging angry remarks, acknowledge that a co-worker's criticism in front of colleagues embarrassed you and look for a constructive solution.
Practice patience and persistence. Make a commitment to yourself to see things through even when difficulties arise. For example, if you get declined after one job interview, transfer your energies to the next opportunity.
Slow down. Sometimes you get more done by slowing down. Lack of sleep or perpetual multi-tasking can cause stress to build up. Give yourself a break to refresh your mind.Act happy. Just trying to appear happy can often help you lift your mood after a setback. Treat yourself to a funny movie or call a friend who always makes you laugh.Learn to ask for help. Make it easier for your loved ones to support you. Practice asking for help in a respectful manner while being specific about what you need. Don’t have a loved one for this, get a mentor, coach, or counselor.Be generous. The more you give to others, the more likely they are to reciprocate in your time of need and the better you'll feel about yourself.Emotional resilience is a powerful asset for accomplishing more in life and experiencing greater contentment. Protect your physical and emotional health by learning how to adapt to challenges. Contact Lisa at: lisahook@purposebourn.comPurpose Bourn Coaching:https://www.purposebourn.com/Blog: https://www.purposebourn.com/blog-1 FOLLOW US: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisa_hooks_Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LisaHooksLif...Twitter: https://twitter.com/purposebourn #lisahooks #businessmentor #lifecoach

Bonus. Easily Expand Your Comfort Zone

What if I told you I'd give you $1,000 to make an important public speech? Would you take the offer? Like most of us, you probably recoiled immediately at the idea, even though it could be lucrative for you! Why didn't this idea appeal to you? When the very thought of certain activities evokes fear or anxiety within you, it's because they're outside your comfort zone. Public speaking, for example, is outside most people's comfort zone.Your comfort zone is the sphere of activities that you feel comfortable with and that you can accomplish without negative emotions. It also includes people, places, and things that cause only positive thoughts within you.How Important is Your Comfort Zone?Your comfort zone can limit your capabilities and cause you to forsake your dreams and goals, or it can spur you on to great things. In fact, your comfort zone can determine both your personality and your potential for success. Many successful people achieve their goals because they have the ability to expand their comfort zone in order to get what they want.If you wish to expand your comfort zone, you can mentally condition yourself to be comfortable in new situations so you can overcome your anxiety, achieve your goals, and fulfill your dreams. Here are some tips you can use to expand your comfort zone and help fight your anxiety about certain situations:Understand your mindset. Mental conditioning plays a large role in developing your comfort zone. This means that how we form our comfort zones begins in our own mind. Each of us already has preconceived notions of what may be comfortable and what may not be, and we designate mental guidelines to keep us within our comfort zone.* You have chosen your own comfort zone boundaries! Knowing your boundaries is the first step to being able to expand them.Disobey some of your self-imposed rules. If you want to expand your comfort zone, you must let yourself loose from the guidelines you impose on yourself. Breaking some of these rules will allow you to seek new experiences that can bring you greater success!Consider the true risk of a situation. It's important to know what the true risks are, as opposed to what you feel (or fear) may occur. Knowing the difference can enable you to overcome your limitations.Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort level. Many times, we are our own worst enemy when it comes to boundaries and limitations. There are times when you'll have to push yourself to get where you want to be. In these instances, you must meet the challenge to leave your comfort zone.* When stepping outside your comfort zone brings you success, you'll find that the benefits are well worth the effort!Whenever you try something for the first time, you're bound to be a little uncomfortable. We're all conditioned to fight change and stay in our comfort zones. You may have to remind yourself that only you can push yourself to step outside the box.Be patient, be aware of your self-imposed limitations, and try things in small steps at a time. This way your comfort zone will expand at a gradual, comfortable pace, and your fears and anxieties will subside as you gain positive experiences.Keep your dreams in sight! Expanding your comfort zone may be all it takes to achieve your goals and live the life you dream of. Contact Lisa at: lisahook@purposebourn.comPurpose Bourn Coaching:https://www.purposebourn.com/Blog: https://www.purposebourn.com/blog-1 FOLLOW US: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisa_hooks_Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LisaHooksLif... #lisahooks #businessmentor #lifecoach

Time management is a popular subject among business entrepreneurs. We make it important for business success. But, it sometimes seems that the more we try to manage our time - to get everything done, the less we enjoy our lives. What’s ironic is that so many of us want to have our own business so that we can have more time freedom. And end up spending more hours each day working our business than our 9 to 5.We want to get as much done as possible. The thinking is that the more time we find to work, the more productive we’ll be. But Experts are finding that this idea is simply not true. In fact, working harder and spending more hours at work, may actually reduce your productivity. Productivity, creativity, and positivity can increase with energy, when you’re alert and well rested. The varying degrees of your energy level can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Sometimes you have to have the energy to complete a task or activity and other times you seem to have the most energy when you’re trying to relax. How often do you give Yourself Credit for Your Accomplishments? As an online entrepreneur, patting yourself on the back is necessary. You have to keep yourself encouraged and acknowledging your accomplishments help with this. But sharing your successes with others is also beneficial. When you fulfill your dreams, you can inspire others that they can do the same. I’m sure that you have pessimistic people in your network. You can inspire them that great things can come out of their lives as well. People love to hear about personal triumphs. People need inspiration and answers. You have solutions, wisdom, and education that can literally change lives. But how will they know you are who they need if you aren't telling them?If you’re going to be a successful entrepreneur and influencer you have to put yourself in the spot light. You may be uncomfortable with the very idea. But, if you can’t toot your own horn, it’s going to be difficult for others to know what you’ve accomplished --especially in an online environment. And this includes professional and personal achievements, give yourself credit for all of it. And tell other's how they can experience the same.Gandhi once admonished people to, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” When you change for the better or have little or big successes that you’re proud of, let the world know. You could become an inspiration for others! Contact Lisa at: lisahook@purposebourn.comPurpose Bourn Coaching:https://www.purposebourn.com/Blog: https://www.purposebourn.com/blog-1 FOLLOW US: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisa_hooks_Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LisaHooksLif...Twitter: https://twitter.com/purposebourn

The average person generates 25,000 to 50,000 thoughts per day. Imagine if each of those thoughts were negative. What effect do you think this would have on your life? What if those 50,000 thoughts were positive? Our mindset matters. Our attitude matters.Cultivate A Positive Outlook discuss five ways positive thinking is connected to success, and how to rid yourself of negative thoughts, and cultivate a positive attitude.Success is more than positive thinking. It requires positive action as well. While positive thinking builds the foundation of success, you have to follow up by taking positive actions. If there is one thing that I’ve learned about dreams is that a dream is still just a dream - and it will remain that way - until I set things in motion with some action. So when I have a dream that I want to see come to fruition, I create an action plan to guide me to manifestation.A positive attitude is one of the stepping-stones to success. Everyone has a negative thought occasionally and you may be able to counteract it with a positive thought. In life, there is a time and place for both negative and positive thoughts. However, when negativity becomes a habit or begins to have adverse effects on you, it's time to make an attitude change and cultivate a positive mindset. Contact Lisa at: lisahook@purposebourn.comPurpose Bourn Coaching:https://www.purposebourn.com/Blog: https://www.purposebourn.com/blog-1 FOLLOW US: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisa_hooks_Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LisaHooksLif...Twitter: https://twitter.com/purposebourn

If you let it get the best of you by feeding in to it and actually believing the lies you’re telling yourself, it can destroy even the best of intentions for success. The fallout from self-doubt can be devastating and render you incapable of continuing to make rational business decisions. It can consume you and steal your focus on what’s important. Don’t let the rantings of self-doubt slow you down and render you helpless to realize your dreams of success. I listened to just enough news reports to get their version of the worst that could happen and I wrote down how the corona virus could effect me, my family, and the country.I went through worst-case scenarios and "what if's" and allowed myself to experience the emotions and I listened to the negative talk. The Covid-19 Pandemic has created and stirred fear and fearful situations across the world. But we can't let fear overtake us.Fear is a survival mechanism. It’s a mechanism that God created to work in our bodies to keep us safe. It helps us escape danger. We go into fight, flight, or freeze mode when we are in danger or threatening conditions.Fear is normal. The capacity to be afraid is a part of normal brain function. The problem with fear, is that fear response symptoms can be activated even in the absence of a fearful stimulus. Fear is a distressing emotional response to a real or imagined threat. How much of your fear is real, imagined, and taught? Most of our fear, is our creation. Our feelings come from our thinking; our thoughts cause emotions. Our thoughts and emotions can create physical stimulus. When you choose to worry, when you choose to ruminate, when you choose to what if you choose to have thoughts that create fear. And then you choose to make decision and take or not take action based on those fearful thoughts. If we want to get a handle on our fears, we have to investigate them A practice that I do with my clients is to have them identify their fears, all of them.  During our session I have them write out their fears and then we unpack each one.I recommend that you do this for yourself. Knowing what your fears are can help you step out of your comfort zone of inaction, You can confront your fears and do the least scariest and work your way to the most frightening. Exposure Therapy is optimal for this. As you move to the most frightening you can seek professional help.  Isn’t it time to kick down the barriers that are holding you back? Isn't it time to have the quality of life that you desire? Isn't it time to get a handle on your fear?Yes, it is! Contact Lisa at: lisahook@purposebourn.comPurpose Bourn Coaching:https://www.purposebourn.com/Blog: https://www.purposebourn.com/blog-1 FOLLOW US: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lisa_hooks_Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LisaHooksLif...Twitter: https://twitter.com/purposebourn
