Today, we're diving into an experience that nearly 8 out of 10 people grapple with: impostor syndrome. Think about this—despite your achievements, despite the recognition, there's that persistent, uncomfortable feeling of 'What if I'm not as good as they think?' Instead of living with this feeling, what if we could learn to think like someone who doesn't feel like an impostor at all? What if it was just a 'moment,' rather than a mindset? Our guest today, Dr. Valerie Young, is a pioneer in this field, known for her groundbreaking work on understanding and overcoming impostor syndrome. Her book, “The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women And Men: Why Capable People Suffer from Impostor Syndrome and How to Thrive In Spite of It” has been published in seven languages including Korean and Turkish and she's shared her insights with everyone from NASA to Harvard to Google. And today, she's here to help us explore what it really takes to stop thinking like an impostor and start leading with authentic confidence. So, what does it mean to reframe your thoughts and have an 'imposter moment' instead of an 'imposter life'?

Powell was in Jackson Hole last week and today we discuss some Jackson Hole Revelation on the future of the market and interest. We also talk the current election and all of the ins and outs of election strategy. Then, we veer into how social media is changing elections and how it feels like people, especially comedians, are holding back more than they used to because of cancel culture. We reflected on how trends, whether in culture or finance, often swing to extremes before eventually balancing out. Today we discuss... How neither major party is focusing on policy; Trump's policies are somewhat known, but Harris has been silent. The current strategy of staying silent and letting the press handle the narrative reflects a shift in political tactics. There is concern about electing a candidate without clear policy positions or public discourse. Social media has heightened expectations for political figures to be vocal and transparent. Criticisms of Harris include skepticism about her ability to change policies while already in office. Historical examples, such as Johnson and Kennedy, show that VPs may have differing policies from Presidents. The pendulum of cultural and political trends often swings from one extreme to the other, influencing market behavior. Social media and current cultural dynamics affect how comedy and political commentary are received. The market trends, such as real estate prices, are influenced by broader economic conditions and cultural shifts. Reversion to the mean is a concept where extreme market movements often correct back to an equilibrium. Understanding financial trends and market cycles can help in making informed investment decisions. What Powell discussed at Jackson Hole. How did an atheist professor who wrote articles against evangelical Christians become one? In this week's episode Sam Hailes sits down with Rosaria Butterfield who describes her journey from being a liberal sceptic to becoming a Christian. Rather than a clean or easy process, she describes her conversion as "messy and dangerous." A significant part of Rosaria's journey involves her sexuality. From a young age, she found herself more drawn to women than men. However, it wasn't until the age of 28 that she came out as a lesbian to her friends. Her journey towards Christianity began when she decided to explore the religious right's views and beliefs regarding homosexuality. She wrote an article criticising them for infringing upon the rights of consenting adults. This article gained much attention and resulted in a letter from a pastor named Ken Smith who invited her to his home for a discussion. She accepted the invitation, seeing it as an opportunity to better understand evangelical Christianity for her research. Little did she know that this interaction would play a crucial role in her conversion, as she suddenly found herself absorbed in Bible study for hours each day. Rosaria is now an author and speaker whose books include The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert, The Gospel Comes with a House Key and most recently Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age. The Emotional Intelli-Gents Podcast: Navigating Leadership with Emotional intelligence
In EP26 the EQ Gents dig into a well-known inhibitor for many aspiring leaders looking to propel their careers. The term, known as ‘Imposter Syndrome' or ‘Imposterism', was first identified by psychologists Pauline Rose Clance and Suzanne Imes in 1978, to describe a pattern where individuals doubt their accomplishments and harbor a persistent fear of being exposed as a "fraud." The term was further popularized by Dr. Valerie Young's book in 1980 called, The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women, wherein Dr. Young identifies 5 archetypes of ‘Imposter Syndrome' commonly seen in females in the workforce. More recent research has led to the conclusion that males also suffer from ‘Imposter Syndrome' to the same degree as females. In this episode, our co-hosts will take a deep dive into Imposter Syndrome, specifically how it shows up and detrimental impacts unchecked Imposter Syndrome can have on one's mental health and career performance. No doubt, the EQ Gents have had their own personal battles with Imposter Syndrome which they share throughout this enlightening episode. Topics: 1) Explaining the origin story of ‘Imposter Syndrome' and how it became widely known as a career killer. 2) The common signs and symptoms one should look out for to determine if they are being plageud by Imposter Syndrome.3) The five (5) archetypes of Imposter Syndrome 4) Strategies the EQ Gents have personally employed to get through their own struggles with Imposter Syndrome over the years. Imposter thoughts stop so many impactful entrepreneurs and executives from getting visible and building their thought leadership – especially on a platform like LinkedIn.But the most effective and long-lasting way to build trust and community as an expertise-based small business is to SHARE that expertise publicly, imperfectly, clearly, and proudly! In this solo episode, I outline Dr. Valerie Young's five flavors of imposter thoughts and how they specifically show up for mission-driven humans building their thought leadership brand. More importantly, I share actionable reframes you can practice to build new thoughts in the moment and serve your people in a deeper way.“Showing up with love and positive intention is enough, because the reader, the ideal client, the beloved human being I am trying to reach does not need me to be perfect, they need me to be ME. That's all I can give to them, and that is enough.”To read a full transcript of the episode, visit: LUMOS MARKETINGResources from this episode:Get on the Thought Leadership Clarity Course Waitlist - I'll send you the first episode for free on June 1. You can find longer reviews of each book by clicking on their title." - J. Dykstra.
