How to Split a Toaster: A divorce podcast about saving your relationships
Looking in the Mirror: Finding Self-Awareness Through DivorceFamily law attorney Seth Nelson and Pete Wright welcome Lionel Moses, a Desert Storm veteran and relationship coach who helps people break unhealthy relationship patterns through what he calls "the mirror effect." This powerful episode of How to Split a Toaster explores how divorce can become a catalyst for essential self-discovery and growth. The Mirror Effect in RelationshipsDrawing from his experiences through two divorces, Lionel shares how seeing himself as the common denominator led to transformative insights about relationship patterns. As a self-described "people pleaser," he discovered that his tendency to fix others' problems masked deeper emotional needs that went unaddressed in his marriages.Breaking Cycles Through Self-AwarenessSeth brings his legal expertise to the conversation, highlighting how emotional readiness impacts divorce proceedings. When clients focus exclusively on their former spouse's behavior rather than their own growth, it often complicates and extends the legal process. The discussion reveals how self-awareness can lead to more constructive co-parenting relationships and healthier future partnerships. From Performance to AuthenticityLionel's concept of "performative relationships" resonates throughout the conversation, as he describes moving from seeking external validation to developing genuine self-love. This transformation enabled him to build more authentic connections and achieve amicable co-parenting relationships—a goal many find challenging during divorce.Key Insights• Examine your patterns in relationships rather than focusing solely on your partner's behavior• Develop emotional resilience by understanding your authentic needs versus performative habits• Build self-awareness before entering new relationships to break recurring relationship cyclesThis episode offers invaluable guidance for anyone navigating divorce or seeking healthier relationship patterns. Through Lionel's candid sharing and Seth's legal wisdom, listeners gain practical tools for self-reflection and personal growth during major life transitions.Whether you're considering divorce, in the midst of proceedings, or rebuilding after separation, this conversation provides a roadmap for using life's challenges as opportunities for transformation and healing.Links & NotesFind Lionel on his website, LinkedIn, Facebook, InstagramCheck out The Marriage SeedSchedule a consult with Seth (00:00) - Welcome to How to Split a Toaster (00:26) - Meet Lionel Moses (00:58) - What Is the Mirror Effect? In this episode, Jim Murphy, New York Times bestselling author, shares how leaders can build resilience, reframe fear, and operate at their highest level under pressure. His approach blends performance psychology, neuroscience, and spiritual discipline. 1. Identity Beyond Roles Murphy emphasizes the risk of anchoring identity in professional roles or achievements: “When I lost baseball due to injury, I felt like I lost everything. My whole identity was wrapped up in that role.” For executives and consultants, this is a reminder: leadership requires identity that outlasts titles, deals, or short-term wins. Anchoring in deeper values creates long-term stability. 2. Fear as a Performance Constraint Murphy defines fear as “a byproduct of self-centeredness.” The executive cost is high: constant comparison, judgment, and anxiety undermine decision-making. He identifies three key obstacles to peak performance: Excessive, scattered thoughts Negative or judgmental self-talk Concern with others' opinions “When you're at your very best … there's no concern for self. You're totally caught up in the moment.” This mirrors what elite consultants and CEOs must practice: focus on the work, not the ego. 3. Rewiring Fear and Trauma Murphy reframes fear and phobias: “Phobias are your subconscious working perfectly to protect you.” Through structured methods and neuroplasticity, leaders can “rewire” how they respond to past failures and pressure. “You can have a phobia for 50 years, and it can be gone in less than an hour.” For executives, the takeaway is clear: performance limits are rarely permanent, they can be retrained. 4. Freedom Through Surrender and Detachment Murphy shares a practical mantra he learned from an athlete he trained: “I expect nothing. I can handle anything.” This principle strips away attachment to outcomes, freeing leaders to make bolder, less ego-driven decisions. As he puts it: “The most powerful thing anyone can do is surrender their little strength for the power that grows the grass and spins the earth.” For leaders, this translates into resilience, the ability to operate under uncertainty without fear of reputational or financial loss clouding judgment. 5. The Best Possible Life (and Career) Murphy notes: “The best possible life has one foot in joy and one foot in suffering. We can't gain wisdom without going through hard things.” For high performers, this is a critical leadership principle: growth requires discomfort. A career without setbacks yields little wisdom. 6. Practical Tools Leaders Can Use Murphy provides several techniques executives can adopt immediately: Breath control: slowing to 5–6 breaths per minute to stabilize thought patterns under pressure. Structured reflection: gratitude, presence, and visualization as part of a daily routine. Ego discipline: exercises that reduce the need for external validation and increase clarity in communication. Hey missionary family! This podcast episode is #225 - Applying the Rule of Thirds. In this episode, I'm sharing something new I've been thinking about called the Rule of Thirds—and how it applies to missionary life, post-mission life, and really, all of our human experience. You've heard me talk before about the 50/50 rule—how life and missions are made up of both joy and struggle—but this time, I'm introducing a new way to see it: the top third, the bottom third, and the middle third. That middle third—the “meh,” in-between space—might not feel exciting, but it's actually where we build consistency, clarity, and growth. Whether you're serving a mission, preparing to go, or finding your rhythm after coming home, learning to value this neutral space can help you find balance, peace, and stability through life's roller coaster of highs and lows. I'll also explain how this idea came to me at a business conference, why it reminded me of photography composition and music triads, and how seeing life in thirds can bring more compassion, grounding, and gratitude to your missionary journey—and beyond. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. At The Red Eye, we tell true stories from the skies and the ground. They're funny, heartbreaking, and sometimes downright shocking - but today's story is different. It isn't just about a dramatic in-flight medical emergency. It's about the emotional toll it left behind, and what happens when the strength we've relied on for so long suddenly cracks. The crew member who donated this story, a seasoned flight attendant and cancer survivor, has weathered countless red-eyes. But when a passenger collapsed mid-flight on her London–Nigeria route, she found herself alone in the galley, protecting the cockpit, caring for an unwell passenger, and carrying the impossible weight of life-or-death decisions she wasn't trained to make. The real turbulence came later, alone in a hotel room far from home. For crew, the unspoken rule is simple: smile, stay composed, and leave your problems at the door. But the truth is that behind the uniform, flight attendants carry the same struggles as anyone else - grief, illness, financial stress, loneliness. And sometimes, the pause button we press during service can't hold it all back. This episode sheds light on the hidden mental health struggles faced by aviation professionals and reminds us that no one, no matter how strong, is immune to reaching their limit. It's a story about resilience, vulnerability, and the courage it takes to finally say, “I'm not okay.”Resources & HelplinesIf you or someone you know is struggling, please know that support is available:U.S. — 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 anytime, day or nightUK — Samaritans: Dial 116 123 for freeAustralia — Lifeline: Dial 13 11 14India — AASRA: +91-98204 66726SSend us a text! This week we're doing something a little different on the Awake & Winning Podcast. Instead of Kaylor in the host chair, we're sharing an interview where he was the guest. Our friend Barb Moylan, the powerhouse behind Bam Fit 4 Life, brought Kaylor on her Facebook Live show for a raw conversation about ADHD, depression, and what it really takes to take back control of your life. Kaylor gets vulnerable about the years he felt like he was stuck “in the trunk” of his own life, the rock-bottom moment that cracked everything open, and how he flipped the script on ADHD, seeing it as a superpower instead of a disability. He also breaks down the simple but powerful fundamentals that changed everything: testing for root causes, dialing in sleep and nutrition, training hard, and keeping promises to himself. Barb's mission to help women reclaim strength and sovereignty is the perfect match for this convo, and you'll walk away inspired to rethink health, purpose, and freedom on your own terms. Episode Highlights: ADHD reframe, root-cause testing, circadian rhythm, clean nutrition, strength training, anxiety tools, promises to self, entrepreneurship, mission first, men's mental health, pharmaceutical trade-offs, sovereignty Takeaways: You are not a victim Reframe ADHD as a superpower and align your work Test for root causes before you treat Regulate sleep and light exposure daily Balance blood sugar and lower inflammation Keep promises to yourself to crush anxiety Build a mission that's bigger than you If this episode lit a fire under you, don't keep it to yourself. Staying positive doesn't mean pretending everything is fine—it means honouring what you're truly feeling while still giving yourself space for ease. In this episode, we talk about the importance of being authentic, transparent, and vulnerable without the need to over-explain or over-share. Simply saying, “I'm not up for this right now,” can be both genuine and empowering. We also explore the wisdom of stillness—how, like muddy water that clears when left alone, our emotions and thoughts can settle with time. By inviting pause, calming the nervous system, and practicing patience with ourselves, we can navigate the tougher moments with more grace and compassion, allowing positivity to return naturally.Have you joined our Facebook Group yet? We all crave comfort. But the truth is, self-confidence isn't built in comfort zones, it's built in the moments when we're willing to be uncomfortable. Leslie Randolph introduces the idea of deliberate discomfort and why it's the key to both confident teens and confident women. Drawing from her own life and her coaching work, Leslie unpacks how stretching beyond what feels easy builds the emotional resilience we need to face challenges, pursue big goals, and show up with confidence in everyday life. What if nothing changes because nothing changes? What if growth, joy, and genuine self-confidence all live on the other side of discomfort? In this week's episode of the LDS Mission Podcast, Episode 222: Trading Out the Tough Stuff, I'm sharing a concept that has been on my mind as I've worked with missionaries, returned missionaries, and missionary moms. Life on the mission—and after—can feel really tough. Whether it's stress, overwhelm, loneliness, or self-doubt, it's easy for our brains to shut down and say, “this is just too hard.” But what I've learned, and what I want to share with you, is that most of the time we're not escaping the tough stuff—we're simply trading one set of hard emotions for another. In this episode, I'll walk you through how to notice this pattern, how to stop resisting the difficulty, and how to choose which “hard” is worth it. You'll hear real-life examples from missionaries, service missions, jobs, relationships, and even my own family. Together, we'll explore why confidence is less about capability and more about being willing to feel discomfort, and how emotional resilience comes from making peace with the fact that life is always 50/50—half good and half hard. My hope is that Trading Out the Tough Stuff will help you recognize the power you have in deciding where to put your energy. You get to choose the tough emotions that move you closer to the person you want to become. Instead of trying to avoid the hard, you can lean into it with intention, faith, and confidence—and find freedom in the process. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. The emotional rollercoaster of divorce can leave us feeling like we're constantly in survival mode, reacting to every text, comment, or situation with immediate emotion rather than thoughtful response. This heightened state keeps us stuck in cycles that prevent healing and forward movement. I'm talking about this common struggle by exploring the difference between being consumed by emotions and being healthily connected to them. When we're constantly reacting from a place of anger, fear, or hurt, our emotions are actually running the show while we watch helplessly from the passenger seat. When our nervous system stays heightened, our prefrontal cortex (the brain's decision-making part) becomes less flexible. This creates the effect of choices that may not be aligned with what's best and right for you, increased stress, and more negative emotions. The solution is in creating space between stimulus and response. By validating our feelings without immediately acting on them, we gain the power to choose how we respond. I'll offer practical guidance on shifting from emotional survival to emotional resilience through simple but powerful practice in this episode. This practice transforms not only our divorce experience but ripples through every relationship in our lives. As we model emotional regulation, we become powerful architects of our future rather than reactive victims of our circumstances. Ready to stop letting your emotions drive your decisions? This episode provides the roadmap to build emotional resilience that will serve you long after your divorce is finalized. To download your FREE GUIDE: "7-Day Self Trust Reset" click here.
