I've heard all the lines: "CBD is a fad""The government will out-regulate the product""No major organizations will adopt CBD policies"To dispel each of these: CBD research is hitting an all-time high. The last holdout states restricting hemp have all allowed hemp production and CBD salesMajor organizations that allow CBD use:National Hockey League (NHL)Major League Baseball (MLB)World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for Olympic AthletesThe World Health Organization states CBD is safe for use and has no risk of addiction or overdose. Missing from the list? The IAFF. We need to get the word out to other firefighters and let them know there's CBD out there that's safe for the job and beneficial for all of us!This stuff is here to stay. Well first: WHY are you taking it?Keep in mind CBD lasts about 6 hours on average and takes about one hour to kick in.CBD for chronic anxiety throughout the day means you should take it in the morning and maybe once more in the afternoon. If you wanted to take CBD for sleep you should take it 1 hour before bed.A lot of the dosing and timing of CBD is all about how you feel. Start with 1 dropper and see how you feel! We're here to build confidence in this product and let the fire service know that CBD can be made safe for the job! How much CBD should you be taking at a time? Is there an overdose limit? Research is very clear on one thing: taking very high doses of CBD at once is very safe. No overdose limit has been found in humans. The reasons why you're taking CBD matter when it comes to the dose you choose. Sleep, for example is only improved with doses more than 25mgWhile everyone needs to adjust CBD to their effective level, it's a good idea to start of at 1 single serving (33mg) for #Rescue1CBD and then increase it as neededDisclaimer: We're not doctors. Any time you're considering taking CBD, please consult your physician. The dosages above are based on research published by PubMed and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)___________________________________________________ We're here to build confidence in this product and let the fire service know that CBD can be made safe for the job! Policy is everything in this caseStraight to the point: CBD doesn't cause intoxication, a "buzz", high or inability to operate machinery or vehicles. THC does.Since it's federally legal and it's non-intoxicating there's nothing wrong with consuming CBD during the daytime or driving after doing so. But, at the firehouse depends on your department's policy.I wanted to take a minute to expand on that. Anxiety is associated with multiple hormonesWe know that CBD affects two of them: Cortisol and SerotoninWe've talked about cortisol before, it being tied to inflammation and stress. While it has its place, when it gets out of control it causes physiological changes that sometimes cause some pretty crappy symptoms. Serotonin is your happy hormone and is targeted by anti-depression and anti-anxiety medication. So, this episode is about exactly that. _____________________________________________ We're here to build confidence in this product and let the fire service know that CBD can be made safe for the job! When we think of inflammation, we think of swelling and pain after we're injured. But, the truth is we have a level of inflammation in our bodies at all times. It's natural and healthy to have a balance of inflammatory hormones throughout your organs and tissues. When there is an imbalance and levels of inflammatory hormones are elevated for too long, you're in a state of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. This basically means your body has an increased level of stress being put on your organs and your blood vessels on a cellular level. Chronic inflammation sucks. It causes an increased chance of getting Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.Firefighters frequently have chronic inflammation from our job and from our lifestyle. 3 Important things to know about CBD here: 1) It's effectiveness can depend on the amount you take2) Consistent use is crucial for newcomers to see improvement3) The labels on most brands of CBD oil are inaccurateThese could be a few reasons why CBD is ineffective. But, the plain truth is this: CBD just wont work for some people. Why? If the issue you're trying to remedy is not handled by your endocannabinoid system, it just won't work. You can't take tums for a headache, right? CBD isn't a miracle, it's not a catch-all treatment for everything that ails you. It's a tool to reduce inflammation and balance hormones in your body that can reduce anxiety and help you sleep better. We're also still learning about this awesome compound. What are cannabinoids? Where do they fit in the healthcare of the modern fire service? In this episode I'll go over:The definition and composition of what a cannabinoid isThe benefits of cannabinoids on our bodiesPotential problems we'll have with cannabinoids like THC in the fire serviceWhy we should (and will be) accepting of using cannabinoids from hemp plants in the future of the fire serviceCannabinoids should not be an issue for the modern fire service, they shouldn't be restricted when used properly.THC is the only cannabinoid that we need to be careful of, since it can cause intoxication. We're here to build confidence in this product and let the fire service know that CBD can be made safe for the job! If you're reading this your sleep probably sucks. You're not alone, nearly 40% of firefighters have some kind of diagnosed sleep issue.Disclaimer: I'm not a doc, I don't even play one on TV! I also didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night (if you remember either of those commercials). This isn't medical advice, I'm simply sharing my knowledge and experiences with CBD and melatonin and some of the research that has been done by professionals. Speak with your Dr. about any supplementation/medical issues you are curious about.Consistently bad sleep leads us to seek a solution, since the job we signed up for inherently has a disruptive sleep schedule. We're paid or volunteer to be up at all hours of the night which is very unnatural for humans. So, our options are: 1. Quit the fire service (lol, not happening)2. Take medication 3. Try to correct your sleep naturally4. Do nothing3 of those choices suck if you ask me. The problem with trying to correct your sleep naturally is that we have second jobs, kids, stress, etc. We're not making time to get our 7-9 hours, eat properly, work out regularly and keep our stress levels down with healthy coping mechanisms. So, we're looking at things we can take, like melatonin, to possibly help us fall asleep and/or stay asleep. So, is it good for us? Should we be taking it?How would it combine with CBD?Let's do it!We're here to build confidence in this product and let the fire service know that CBD can be made safe for the job! Hemp, Marijuana and Cannabis are all definedAnd the language in your policy can mean the difference between allowing and prohibiting CBD useThere are a few recurring scenarios that I've been witnessing in policies across the U.S. and they use the same four words to define the rules of using CBDIt's not nearly as confusing as it would seem. But because the federal government is involved, multiple governing bodies have a definition and legislation for these terms. Luckily, they all define them similarly. The issue is, does your department think that one is the same as the other when it's not?In this episode I talk about a few examples I've seen from other fire departments around the country both large and small. While I'm not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice, I can speak from experience and would urge you to take into consideration what other fire departments have already gone through as it pertains to their policies. Thanks for listening! I was interviewed by Chris from The Rogue Tailboard podcast and he had a TON of great questions. Besides it being just a great conversation, I felt that it could be very helpful and I wanted to share it on the Rescue 1 Podcast as well.In this episode, you guys get a peek behind the curtain of Rescue 1 as Chris asks me about my origins in the fire service and some personal questions. But, we also talk a lot about CBD from a beginner and advanced viewpoint. I hope you enjoy this one, I really did!
First responders need to know the basics about CBD. Not just because you're legally entitled to use it, but also because I believe it will be a game-changer for the US Fire Service and it will be a staple in every firehouse in America. Before that happens, we have to understand it and that starts with the basics: What is it and how is it made?If you got something useful out of this video, please share around your firehouse and if you have any other questions you can always drop a commend, email us or reach out on social! support@rescue1cbd.comTake care of each other and be safe out thereShare this on twitter: https://ctt.ac/W7EqQWatch the episode on YouTubeVisit our website: https://rescue1cbd.comGet a ton of content on our blog page about the research behind CBD, why it works well for firefighters and we answer FAQs.-View our lab tests-Contact us via live chat with any questions -Join our email list to get more in-depth on these videos and ask us any questions you'd like!Follow us on social Live interviews, Get in on our giveaways See what we do behind the scenes of Rescue 1 CBD! What started off as an apparel company trying to give back to firefighters turned into a non-profit organization with thousands of followers and a growing team of firefighters who are counselors for other first responders.Blake Stinnet founded Next Rung in 2018 With his education in psychology, he's the perfect guy to bring an understanding of how we can tackle the difficult topic of mental health.Next Rung is an incredible program that has a hotline for first responders to call or text to talk. This can be a source of decompression or it can be used to find a professional therapist who's worked with first responders. They even help with costs if needed. In this episode Blake and I talk aboutHow overcoming the mental health problem is more than just awarenessWhy everyone is different when it comes to talking or not talkingWhat we need to do in the fire service to help reduce the stigmaHow YOU can help Next RungWhat the future looks like"We want to be there for the positives too, to walk beside you. Since the CBD molecule was isolated in 1963, research has been consistently done to assess the benefits and effectiveness of CBD.While tests haven't been done on firefighters (yet), we have information on what CBD does to the brain and body. Why should you care? Because here's what CBD was researched to effect:SleepPainAnxiety/DepressionInflammationSound familiar? Look, I'm not saying CBD is a cure for anything because it's not. What I AM saying is that over the decades, we've seen all the evidence point in the same general direction for many things.Because of that, we can see promise and we can't ignore the potential benefits since it's safe for use and no addiction potential. Stuff I talk about in this episode:Specific studies from respected universitiesThe conclusions of researchers and scientists for specific benefits of CBDWhy firefighters benefit from the use of CBDWhat the future of CBD in the fire service looks likeThe U.S. Fire Service is very reactive to our physical and mental health. Part of that blame is on us though. We need to take care of ourselves a bit better. We shouldn't wait until we have crippling anxiety or sleep issues plaguing our nights to get treatment. We could do a lot more to deal with this stuff BEFORE it becomes a problem. CBD is just one of the pieces to this puzzle, but I want to talk about it because it's the piece that we know the least about. How much research is done on a proper diet to help with sleep and inflammation? I bet you haven't read or heard of any of it, but you'll still do it because it seems to be common sense. Well now we have this all-natural compound that is being feverishly researched. We're told we have to train and practice for our “peak performance” but we're never performing like athletes. How many times have you caught a structure fire or bad accident when you were tired or hungry or sore?Performing at a “peak level” is what athletes do. They train for optimal conditions for years to perform a task for a set amount of time on a set date. We don't even have the luxury of warming up! So, how can we perform well in these conditions? By training ourselves under these conditions. This week's guest, Aaron Quinn is a firefighter for the city of Oakland Ca, and is in charge of the physical standards in the academy for their rookies. Mental resilience is a buzzword for firefighters and their mental health. There are a ton of techniques out there but I wanted to hear from Josh, a guy on the job for a little over 7 years in South Florida on a large department. Josh suffered a back injury and spent his time on light duty reading and finding a way out of the "rut" so many of us have found ourselves in.He didn't know it, but that prepared him and his wife for the loss of their second child while his wife was giving birth. In this interview we talk about the reality of getting a crappy hand dealt to you and what to do about it. Josh mentions "You can live in the stories surrounding the events that happened or learn to process them and move on"I saw what he went through and wanted to share with everyone his strategies and tactics if you will.We go over actionable steps that you can do to be ready for anything life throws at you both on and off the job. This was a longer recording so I broke it up over 2 episodes. These calls happen. The high intensity low frequency calls that can be traumatic to our mental health. We're all aware of the CISD/CISM resources available but in the time between the call happening to the time we are in front of a CISM member, what should we be doing?I wanted to talk about this issue based on my experience on the job being on the receiving end of CISM as well as being a member of the peer support team.I also touch on some of the research done as to exactly when and how we should be initiating a "defusal" with our crew. Which, in my opinion is the most important thing we can do after a bad call. Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show please leave us review, share with the guys/girls at the firehouse and subscribe to our channel!
We signed up for all kinds of hazards on the job and sleep deprivation is one of them. It wreaks havoc on our brain and bodies. But, there's good news. We can combat the negative effects of not sleeping or not sleeping well. This week I'm talking with Sean Toomey (Denver Fire Dept.) about sleep. Well, the lack of sleep, anyway. He's the co-founder of First Responder Sleep Recovery, a company he started with his wife in their attempt to turn around the effects of crappy sleep that we all suffer from.Sean's journey in the fire service has been affected by tragic loss of his brothers on the job and he wants to do his part to impact the way we do business when it comes to recovering from a bad night's sleep on shift. It's a way bigger deal than we've ever realized. It's also way easier to deal with than you think. Check out this weeks episode and thanks for listening!

Is it legal? Will I fail a drug test? What does the union say? With the benefits CBD is showing promise of, it makes sense that this awesome compound is making its way into the fire service. Today I want to talk about the most frequently asked questions regarding CBD in the fire service. Enjoy!
A small study showed that participants using Full Spectrum CBD (which contains THC) failed a urinalysis drug test.CBD is a game-changer for the fire service. It's an anti-inflammatory, helps regulate sleep cycles and is anti-anxiety. But, can we be sure that we're able to take it and not fail a drug test? YES.We're talking about how Rescue 1 CBD is Safe For The Job and why others aren't.
