This week's FLBL profile is NEXT RUNG, a non-profit serving the mental health needs of firefighters.
Episode 91 Curtis reached out to me a while ago. He was in a bad spot and he wanted information. He wanted to know how he could get help if he was in a department that's not union and he wanted to get into the Center of Excellence. He didn't know how to do that and he and I went back and forth. He also went back and forth with the guys from Next Rung who run an amazing program there. If you haven't heard of them, go check them out. They do amazing work. He and I went back and forth and I just off ered some support when I could and, and some guidance when I could. Luckily it worked out for him. He found his way into the Center of Excellence as you'll hear in the show. A little background on Curtis. He's 16 years in the fire service between EMT and actual fire. He sent me a note and he said he thought he could run from the anger. However, it followed him wherever he went. He had to see he was in trouble and he didn't do that until it was almost too late for him. As a number of my guests have said, he just hopes that one person could get something out of this show, out of the podcast, out of his story.
Dear high-achieving people, this one's for you. You are the individuals who light up the world with your passion and zest for life. But there's a thin line between being driven and obsessive. It's so easy to fall into the inability to accept where we are now as we chase after the next accomplishment. Brandi Molitor aims to help energetic go-getters like you recognize your values, realign your life, and slowly enjoy the fruits of your labor. She joins us to share actionable tips and insights that you need to hear now! Tune in to this episode: Why We're Obsessed with the Next Rung of Achievement with Brandi Molitor Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Detach yourself from the outcome. Identify the root of your desire. What are you hoping for when you get there? What will it mean if you fail? Accomplishing your goal isn't going to fill the void or fulfill your unaddressed need to be loved and appreciated. ✔️ Check how you're showing up daily. Have you been taking care of yourself? Focus on what lights you up about your work and how you've been treating yourself. Let go of imaginary milestones – you get to set the rules. ✔️ Break out from the blueprint by asking why. Media has conditioned us to pursue the typical image of success: a house, kids, and a high-paying job. Look at your goals through a judgment-free lens and think: Is this what you truly want? ✔️ Walk yourself through the worst-case scenario. What would you do if you were unsuccessful in reaching your goal? What's the worst thing that could happen? Getting a clear idea will give you an objective view of what you'd have to deal with should the worst happen. ✔️ Not everyone is the best person to talk to about difficult decisions. Choose someone who is skilled in holding a safe conversation. A community or coach can see things through an outsider's lens and give healthy feedback. Brandi Molitor is a white, queer woman who is committed to living a life of truth. She works with high-achieving folks who want to align with their core desires and alleviate their frustration and confusion, bringing them closer to peace and clarity. “We're all the same at the end of the day. Like we all have hearts to serve, and we all have the mindset to be the best that we can and to give our best efforts. And we got to be there for each other, because no one else understands these things the way that we understand them.” – Firefighter BlakeWhen he answered the call to join the fire service in 2015, Blake wasn't sure what his journey would look like. The only thing he knew with certainty was that he wanted to impact the people he worked beside and, with a background in theology and psychology, he was poised to do just that. He couldn't have foreseen, however, that his impact would extend well beyond those in his immediate professional circle, and what would start as an apparel company would become Next Rung, a non-profit that has provided peer support and resources for counseling and treatment centers to more than a thousand first responders across the country since 2017. Join former firefighter/paramedic and host Phil Klein as he sits down with Blake, a firefighter/paramedic and founder of Next Rung, as he discusses his professional transition from minister to firefighter and his goal to make a difference in the lives of first responders. Blake also shares how an initial report of an overturned vehicle with two children trapped underneath became the call that will stick with him forever – but not for the reasons he necessarily anticipated. Today you are going to get a promotion. Or rather, today I am going to give you a promotion. Or even better, today you are going to give yourself a promotion. A promotion is exciting. It may come with a new title, or a certificate or a diploma. It likely entails new responsibilities and new challenges as well as new and as yet unimagined opportunities. It signifies a higher level of competence and the confidence that others, at least, have in your achievements to date and in your potential. And that gold star, that new job title, that salary raise is proof of your accomplishment. But where is the proof of your harp accomplishment? How do you know that you're making progress, or keeping pace with whatever goals or timelines you have set for yourself? Where's the guidebook that says, “You are here,” and shows you how to get to “there?” Yes, we do have some ways to gauge our progress. Music exam systems, like the ABRSM or RCM exams, provide an organized way to be “promoted.” You work through the curriculum and move from one grade level to the next. And you get your paper that certifies your promotion. But for those not following an exam system, which is most harpists, where does the assurance of growth and progress come from? We may not need that piece of paper to prove our accomplishment, like the scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz,” but our harp happiness depends on our faith in our momentum. If we don't think we're getting anywhere, we tend to stop trying. So what we are doing today is creating some clarity, clarity about the mysterious “levels” of harp playing, the specific signature skills that you need at these levels and how to create your personal plan for promotion. Now, if you're thinking that because you are really only playing for yourself or that this discussion is only for “serious” harpists” or young people, you couldn't be more wrong. Frankly, it's easier for young students or harpists with a clear path to find those next rungs on the ladder. The course for them is clear. This discussion is for everybody else, those who want to take things at their own pace and want to enjoy their harp playing. Why? Because the path isn't as clear so the progress levels aren't as clear either. And if you don't have markers for where you are now and where your next step is, you end up going around in circles. And that's where frustration can creep in. So let's give you a promotion today. We'll talk about those markers so you can find your next step forward, your next rung on the ladder. And then you give yourself that gold star or certificate or special treat that will mark your promotion. You deserve it. From a Gospel Ministry to the Fire Service, Blake Stinnett has made his life's focus service. While this path may seem non-traditional, Stinnett's Father, who was a Volunteer firefighter, set the expectation and example of putting others first. Recognizing a need in the Brotherhood Stinnett created NextRung. NextRung is a peer support group that trains and facilitates peer support and crisis intervention as well as local networking of mental health resources. In Ep.44 we talk a little about being a firefighter in Georgia and a lot about being a good Brother and how NextRung supports this. We all need some support from time to time, so, share this episode. Share the links below. Share your time and concern with a brother or sister in need. It may be as simple as sitting in the uncomfortable silence and just being present. No grand solutions, no problem solving, just be present. __________________________________________________ You can find the Fireground Fitness podcast wherever great podcasts are located. Hear from the CEO Paul Clarke on what makes Fire Grounds Coffee more that a coffee company and why they have teamed up with a non profit foundation called Next Rung. Paul tells his personal story about struggles with mental health and why coffee plays an important role in dealing with it. As an added bonus Paul gives us a little education about the different types of roasted coffee beans and why they taste they way they do. Paul's idea came at 2 o'clock in the morning with sirens roaring and lights flashing as they arrived at a call riding the ambulance. It was the thirteenth call of the night, there was no sleep in sight, and only mediocre coffee waiting for them back at the station. They poised themselves for action and then someone interjected, “Someone should start a coffee company for first responders." His colleague quickly agreed, they unloaded and went on to their patient, and that was the end of the discussion. The idea followed founder, Paul Clarke, to Iraq where he deployed in 2018 for 9 months. While serving overseas, he met fellow minded service members who wanted to help make his idea a reality. Brainstorming the business soon became one of their favorite pastimes. Over a year later, Fire Grounds Coffee Co. was officially established. Through the help of his best friend, dad, a fellow Marine Captain, and two Air Force Captains, he was able to gain the funding he needed to provide delicious, fresh coffee to first responders and friends. Paul is a husband, father, Dallas Firefighter and Paramedic, an Officer in the Marine Corps Reserves, and an Iraq Veteran. When he isn’t roasting coffee, working at the fire station or at drill, he can be found working out, playing fetch with his dog, hanging out with his son in the sandbox or smoking his own barbeque. He loves being outside with his family and traveling with his wife. Paul started Fire Grounds Coffee Co. because he wanted first responders to enjoy quality coffee and give back to a group of men and women he is proud to represent. The dream is becoming a reality and he is ready to deliver a product to everyone that represents his passion and commitment. Blake Stinnett is a junior pastor, firefighter and the man behind Next Rung. We discuss his journey into the ministry, entering the fire service, the mental health epidemic, the effects of isolation, Next Rung, creating a tribal culture and much more.
Next Rung was founded by Blake Stinnett. He wanted to make a difference in the lives of firefighters and all first responders. The goal quickly changed from being an apparel company to truly being able to serve first responders in their battle against mental health issues. Blake has a background in ministry, working with families and students. However, growing up with a father who was a firefighter, he knew that this profession and brotherhood was something special. After 8 years in full-time ministry, Blake changed gears and started his career as a firefighter in 2015. He currently serves as a firefighter/paramedic with Sandy Springs Fire, which is in Fulton County, Georgia. Blake lives in Covington, Ga with his beautiful wife (Natalie) and two precious children (Layleigh and Jack). Blake's ultimate hope is to serve and make a difference. He set out with a goal to change the life of one person but hopes to change and help save the lives of hundreds of firefighters and first responders across the United States. He believes that Next Rung can do this and that they will make waves in the Fire and First Responder community.Links:NextRung.orgNext Rung on FacebookNext Rung on TwitterNext Rung on Instagram
