On today's episode of the podcast I'm sharing my March profit report If you listened to last month's profit report you may have heard me sounding a little bit defeated with my numbers due to some personal stuff going on. If you missed it, go back and listen to episode 330. Diving into the March profit report, let's revisit the 2024 goals I share at the top of every episode. • I set good, better, best goals of $300k, $400k and $500k in revenue. I was shooting for $400k, I think the $300k is still doable now. Last year we hit $270k so I'd really like to get that to $300k this year. • Hit 60% in profit. Probably going to be changing • Book 4 state speaking gigs for next year • Consistently hit $25k months. Did this in January and February, not in March, probably not in April • Hit $15k in monthly recurring revenue (MRR) by the end of the year. This was the big goal to help us get to our revenue goals at the end of the year. We're a little bit less than halfway to this so far. My original goal was to get to 10k by the end of March but that hasn't happened yet. Let's recap what happened in March: • I've previously shared that if all things went to plan, March was going to be a $40k month. That's what I was hoping for because of launches we had planned. Those didn't end up happening, • We had planned a couple of launches and they didn't really end up happening • We promoted our tax challenge and at the end of that I was planning to promote our services but I ended up doing the challenge while I was out of town, we didn't have many people sign up and I didn't get around to doing too much in terms of promotional emails. Projections vs. Actual 1. Unf*ck Your Biz - $4,000 → $1,000 2. Contract Club - $1,000 → $1,100 3. Legally Launched - $500 → $250 4. Monthly services - $5,00 → $7,145 5. Tax - $4,000 → $3,000 6. Trademarks - $1,250 → $1,250 7. Other - $1,000 → $1,010 Total revenue - $17,750 → $15,265 Expenses Employee wages: $5,200 (this does not include myself) Contractor expenses: $4,700 Owner wages: $2,900 (after my taxes. I paid $2,500 into taxes) Monthly tools: $500 Affiliate payouts: $650 Total expenses: $17,600 Profit (- $2,400) While I know a revenue of $15,265 sounds great, when expenses are $17,600, it makes it a lot less exciting. I then paid myself my salary of $5,300 so the total business profit was about (-$8,000). This is why it's good to have a little bit of cushion in our bank accounts. In April, I'm hoping to make a little bit more money. We're not really doing any promotions this month to make a lot more, but a lot of the team expenses were for Unf*ck Your Biz clients we were wrapping up and our bookkeepers were working on some clients' books that were several years behind and it's a project to really get them caught up. I'm probably going to need to readjust my profit goals because it's dawned on me that I've essentially built an agency. It's a law firm, but it's an agency and I may need to hire more bookkeepers to keep up with demand. Higher profit means more money in my pocket as the business owner, but I also am not looking to work 40-60 hours a week, for me ~30 is the sweet spot so if I can make less profit in order to bring on more people to do more of the client work, then that's okay with me. Because we weren't able to do our launches in March, my biggest issue right now is MRR (monthly recurring revenue). This is not recurring payments for courses, MRR is something you pay every month for until you cancel, think things like Netflix. My big goal is to hit $15,000 in MRR by the end of the year. If our goal was to get five people at $500/month that's $2,500/month times nine months would be close to $25,000 in revenue that we're now missing out on. If we can bring these clients on in May during our launch, that's two less months compared to if we had gotten in during a March launch. I thought about doing an impromptu emergency launch but I don't want to rush anything. We did do an Open House this week and we have a couple fun things up our sleeve next month, but I'm really thinking about shifting the next couple months to focus on audience growth and continue giving out excellent free resources like we always do. April Projections Unf*ck Your Biz- $4,000 Contract Club - $1,000 Legally Launched - $250 Monthly Recurring Revenue - $7,000 Tax - $4,000 TM clients- $2,500 Other - $1,000 Total: $19,750, would really like to hit $20k What's Coming Up in May No big promotions in April but we are focusing on more people signing up for our referral program. Consistency is a drug that amplifies what it is applied to. Consistency will not guarantee success. But you can't be successful without consistency. Consistency is the art of doing something regularly and without fail. It's about showing up, day in and day out, even when motivation wanes and obstacles arise. 1. Consistency breeds discipline 2. Consistency builds momentum 3. Consistency keeps setbacks in perspective Galatians 6:9 – "Let us not become weary in doing good..." Sometimes, doing good can be tiring. God doesn't need any man specifically to carry out His will and do great things for Him. He doesn't need anything. He's God. But, He's not just going to make mountains move through you if you don't first come to Him in surrender. Let's talk about consistency! In business, it is so important that you show up consistently. This is one of the most important factors of success, but how do you choose what platform to be consistent on? There are many to choose from, but you don't have to be on them all if that doesn't feel right to you. For me, it's all about the platform that I feel most comfortable on. This is important for me to feel like my most authentic self. It's easy to get lost in all of the latest social media trends and feel overwhelmed with trying to keep up with it all. The truth is, if you try to show up on all of these platforms that you don't normally spend your time on, it's just not going to feel good to you, and it's hard to stay consistent with something that doesn't feel good. If dancing in Reels or on TikTok doesn't feel right, then don't! There are no rules for what you do and don't have to do to be successful in your business. You are in charge of your business choices. In February Walter T Geer posted that he was going to shut down his social media and “use it to amplify the voices of Black women that needed a mega phone” Walter commented that Historically Black women “have CONSISTENTLY been called upon to help solve the worlds problems. It wasn't too long ago that leaders and companies called upon and hired many of these women, to save their companies by addressing their diversity issues. Now only a few years later, many of those same leaders and companies seem to have forgotten the very people who helped dig them out of a hole”I was in touch with Walter and asked if he thought it was a good idea to profile some of the women he had featured and host a panel discussion on their experiences in marketing and communications and from their perspectives why we are where we are and what needs to change. I was incredibly grateful that six of the black female leaders featured by Walter came back and agreed to be part of the discussion. I want to talk with you today about how to approach your resume summary. I will also be talking a lot about personal branding in this section. If you are new to this concept, the resume summary goes “above the fold” on page 1 of your resume – after your name and contact information, before your Experience section. Here's what DOESN'T go in this space: an old-school objective, which tells a prospective employer what YOU want, rather than how you are uniquely qualified to provide them with what THEY need. An objective sounds something like this: High-achieving communications professional seeking a mid-level position in public relations that utilizes skills in BLANK, BLANK, and BLANK. I hate to break it to you, but a prospective employer does not care what YOU want. Rather, this space should be utilized to lay out your brand differentiators – what you bring to the table that no other candidate likely will. These brand differentiators are then followed by concrete examples that support your brand. I see two primary problems with the resumes I look at that aren't written by me:Either there is no branding at all, or the attempt at branding merely tells the reader that the candidate has the minimum qualifications expected of everyone they would even consider for the role. If there is no summary or branding, the job seeker hasn't set the stage for what is to follow in the Experience section – there's no context for what the prospective employer is reading. If the attempt isn't differentiating, the job seeker has wasted valuable space above the fold when they could have provided compelling evidence that the employer MUST continue reading. How do you know if your branding is differentiating? By looking at what you have with an objective eye. As you read each component, are you merely stating what EVERY candidate should have – or what is unique to you? The mistake many people make in attempting to brand themselves is to try to appeal to everyone – this is not the purpose. Rather, an effective branding statement will have an immediate polarizing effect – a prospective employer will either know this is not the person for them - or they will be highly interested in speaking with this candidate. Three Great Examples Remember: The goal here is differentiating and attention-grabbing. Here are three examples from my clients: Transformational Leader, Creative Operations Change Management | Integrated Team Leadership | Content Champion Bringing best practices in content creation and creative production from a wide range of B2B, B2C, and D2C experience spanning financial services, food & beverage, CPG, retail, luxury automotive, OTC pharma, and online media. Global leadership experience includes onshore and offshore teams spanning U.S., Canada, China, and Italy. This is then followed by: Leadership Highlights: ¨ Increased production capacity by as much as 52% ¨ Generated savings by as much as 50% on contracts ¨ Reduced expenses by as much as 49% Proven Record of Success in: ¨ Restructuring creative departments and workflows, achieving greater productivity and efficiency ¨ Negotiating contracts and developing vendor relationships that slash costs and minimize financial, operational, and legal risk ¨ Optimizing in-house utilization and external resources by creating transparency around demand From 2021: Chief Human Resource Officer Delivering an executive presence, coupled with a data-driven decision process and willingness to engage in tough conversations Senior HR professional with an exceptional record of improving employee engagement and retention in the high-turnover field of healthcare through a combination of building strategic relationships, gathering data directly from front-line workers, and restructuring hiring, on-boarding, and compensation processes. Rather, I think of it as “reconstituting” an achievement or experience from elsewhere in their resume. For example, if a client is in sales and has a strong record of increasing market share in each role he's held, I might pull that information together in a bullet like this: -Consistently catapulted market share by as much as 34% with a strategic combination of BLANK, BLANK, and BLANK The second point is this: What you include in your Summary MUST be anchored somewhere else in your resume – otherwise, there's no context for it. You'll just confuse the reader. Now that I've given you three great examples, let's look at what isn't so great: Objective: Self-motivated and energetic Healthcare Administrator looking for a full-time position in a company where there is always an opportunity to grow, gain experience, and improve skills. Experience in medical operations, excellent interpersonal communication skills, and the organizational savvy to run a facility smoothly, also proudly maintain a highly productive, efficient and quality-driven environment always. Sales LeaderA results-oriented sales professional with a proven track record in business development and sales management. Over 20 years of consultative sales experience, adept at building relationships, developing tailored solutions, and closing deals with multiple decision makers throughout the U.S. and Canada. Consistent top revenue producer with exceptional track record for exceeding sales objectives. Knowledgeable in technology, with experience in working with start-ups and SaaS solutions. A determined self-starter who is intrinsically motivated with demonstrated ability to deliver results. With a graduate education in social work and field-based clinical experience, I apply my training and skills in critical thinking, creative problem solving, adaptability, and cultural competence throughout the work I do daily.
