The Living Word features the teaching ministry of lead pastor, Danny Hodges. Danny pastors a vibrant and growing church in St. Pete Florida called Calvary Chapel Fellowship.
If God calls you on to a mission, don't insult Him by resisting with silly excuses. As Pastor Danny will point out in today's message, Moses did exactly that. This man experienced in a way that very few ever have. God spoke right to him and worked miracles in his life and yet when God set a task before him he trembled in fear, afraid of his own failure. When God calls you to do something he equips and enables you for it, so trust in Him, not in your own understanding or strengths.
God does not take our pride lightly. He sees our hearts and has witnessed every thought and action we've participated in. In today's message, as Pastor Danny continues our study in 1 Peter he'll remind us of the importance of humility as we approach our powerful and loving father. His grace is immense and He went to extreme lengths to demonstrate that for us, but He is also just. And if you abuse His grace, especially by taking advantage of others, you can expect the consequences to be pretty harsh.
Christians are just as susceptible to sin as anybody else. Because we know the law and are in a relationship with God we will probably be even under more attack at the hands of the enemy. But temptations will come in stronger and they will be harder to resist. it can be done but the fact is that you're not always going to make the right choice. in today's message, Pastor Danny will encourage us to approach this life with humility and wisdom. You need to know your weaknesses and not be afraid to ask for help.
Pain and suffering are a part of the Christian journey. If you haven't experienced them in some form, you might need to question if you are actually following Jesus. He doesn't take pleasure in your pain but He does know that you grow from it. When your faith is tested, that is when it becomes deeper and stronger. As Pastor Danny will encourage us in today's message, as counterintuitive as it is, finds moments of joy in your suffering. Thank God for the chance to live out your faith in a real way!
Love is a choice that you make. It's not something that is simply there or not completely outside of your control. This is true in every relationship you have, especially with your spouse if you are married. The passion of dating isn't going to last forever. That man or woman won't always be young. Their looks are going to change, their personality and character are also going to change and so will yours. In today's message, Pastor Danny will remind us that deep true love requires faith and commitment. You don't just fall into it.
Prayer connects us to our Heavenly Father. If you're living in isolation from Him, even after asking Him to save your soul, you can expect your flesh to maintain a destructive hold on you. Sins that have plagued you for years will continue to plague you and might even grow worse. It might be hard to hear but you can't blame God for that. As Pastor Danny will challenge you in today's message, if you want to start living a purposeful, successful spiritual life then you need to commit to time in prayer.
What does it mean to be repentant? In today's message from Pastor Danny, he explains to you the meaning of repentance. Repentance means to turn from the simple way that you were going and turn back to following Jesus. It's making an about-face from the darkness back into the light. Pastor Danny encourages you that repentance is such a great and healing thing. It's coming back to the Lord whose arms are outstretched to you. It's coming into the healing and wholeness god has for you.
Fear is false evidence appearing real. As you listen to today's message from Pastor Danny, he shares with you the truth that everyone experiences fear, but the Bible tells you not to fear. So how is that possible? God is with you no matter what the circumstances are, or who you encounter. He's greater than anything that you'll face. Everything. Pastor Danny encourages you to spend time with the Lord and voice to Him your cares and concerns, then let Him give you the reassurance you need.
Are you leaning on the Lord for the strength within your marriage? In today's message from Pastor Danny, he reassures you that all marriages take work. They're not something that you can just expect to have no problems in. Any relationship takes sacrifice and commitment. Pastor Danny encourages you to turn to the Lord for wisdom, strength, and discernment. If you're experiencing a rough season within your relationship, then tell Him about it. He'll equip you with the encouragement, the words, and the tenacity to keep going.
Have you received the free gift of grace and salvation from Jesus?
You never know what kind of an impact you'll have as a disciple of Christ.
There is a big difference between stumbling and stubbornness.
Confrontation can be hard but often times it is necessary for progress and growth.
Do you take time to confess your sins to the Lord?
How will you know the Father's will if you never ask him?
As a disciple of Jesus, you are to pick up your cross daily and follow him.
Don't be fooled. Every single person is held accountable to the Lord.
When you understand that God is love then you'll understand His first two commandments.
God's character is the same yesterday, today and forever.
As you reveal your walk with the Lord can you see a steady bath of commitment?
As you listen to today's message from Pastor Danny, he encourages you to model yourself after the heart of the apostle Paul. It's definitely something that is easier said than done. However, the Lord will help you to grow and to mature in this position if that's what you are desiring. Pastor Danny stresses the importance of not putting your hope in the things of this world but putting your hope in the Lord and the eternal inheritance he has for you that no one can take away.

Each of us needs to be on guard against the attacks of the enemy. In today's message from Pastor Danny, he shares with you the importance of surrounding yourself with people you can be open and honest with. The devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking people whom he may devour. However, Pastor Danny explains when you have accountability partners in your life you are less likely to fall into temptations. Find Godly people in your life who can help strengthen your walk with the Lord and His plan for you.
Maybe think twice about handing over your eternal inheritance. As you listen to today's message from Pastor Danny, he reminds you about the Biblical story of Jacob and Esau. Esau gave away his inheritance to his brother Jacob for a meal. Pastor Danny encourages you that no matter how tempting some physical desire is don't trade it for what's eternal. Temporal physical appetites can't compare to the glorious eternal inheritance that God has in store for you. Focus on what's eternal.
In today's message, Pastor Danny will share with us how we can guard against bitterness in our lives. The Bible tells us that Christians ought to be careful with the company that they choose to keep. The people that you spend the most time with are the people who will influence what you say, do, and even where you choose to go. And if you choose to be around bitter people, that bitterness could rub off on you and other people in your life. Choose to spend your time with fellow believers in Christ.
Have you ever felt embittered towards someone? Well in today's message, Pastor Danny will share with you what bitterness is and the dangers that come with it. To be bitter towards someone means that you have harsh ill will towards them or a chip on your shoulder towards someone hurting you. But that bitterness can turn into anger and everyone knows the dangers of anger. The Bible says that if you hate someone in your heart you might as well have murdered them. It's a sin.
In today's message, Pastor Danny will remind you that there is a consequence for every sin. If you grew up in a Christian household it's likely that you were disciplined with the ‘rod of correction' that the Bible talks about for parents to use. But as an adult, there is no one around to use the rod of correction on you anymore. So do you just not get punished? Well, the story of David had some interesting insights. His sins against God didn't go unnoticed. There were consequences for what he had done.
Not everyone struggles with the same thing all the time. For each person, there is a unique weakness. For some that weak spot might be overindulgence, lying, or gossiping. But no matter what your weak spot might be it's the job of every believer in Christ to not cause their brother or sister in Christ to stumble. And in today's message Pastor Danny will remind you that you need to be aware that you live in a community of believers. You need to be aware of what you do around others as it could cause them harm.
In the old testament, under the Levitical priesthood, lambs were a common animal to sacrifice for the atonement of sin. But a young lamb could only atone for sin for so long. Animals had to be sacrificed every day for the sins that were committed against God. And in today's message, Pastor Danny will remind you that Jesus is the perfect lamb. Once the spotless lamb of God was slain for all of humanity's sin. Nothing more could ever top that sacrifice he made and through him, you could be forgiven.
For some of you, you can look back on that trial or painful experience and know that God had a plan all the way through it. His plan was for good and not for evil. But for others, you're about to enter one of those trials. And in today's message, Pastor Danny is going to encourage you to never lose sight of your Lord. One of the greatest things to do through any storm in life is to pray and you can pray for anything: strength, patience, wisdom, or even a miracle! And with that, you can know that God is working all things for your good.
Pastor Danny continues sharing the stories of the members of the Hall of Faith. The passage in Hebrews that celebrates the trust placed in God when the world didn't make any sense.
The faith of Rahab was a faith that persevered. Pastor Danny tells us that she was unrecognizable as the same woman who first met the spies as a prostitute. She engaged in the difficult process of sanctification and then she persevered until the end. She truly is a hero of the faith, because her faith not only saved the spies and her family it also remained constant to the end. She was an overcomer that never faltered. When you engage in the process of sanctification may you be just like the persistent prostitute of faith.
Pastor Danny is going to take a good look at the faith of the prostitute Rahab today and what he finds is that it is a faith that saved her and her family. Her act of faith kept anyone in her house from destruction. It's also a surprising faith. God delights in using unexpected people to do His work and in this case He found a prostitute with faith. Keep your eyes open as you move through the world, you'll find faith in surprising places and when you see it you'll never look at the world the same way again.
Take a moment and look at your life. What things has God given you from the world? The question is are you willing to use it for His work? Maybe you've got an extra seat around the table. An extra bedroom. Is He asking you to maybe adopt or foster a child? Maybe like the Israelites, what you have been given is wealth. Pastor Danny shows us that God isn't forcing anyone, but He is asking you if you are willing to use what He has given you for His work. What can you do today with the things God has given you?
Pastor Danny brings an interesting perspective to communion today. When the Israelites celebrated Passover, they were reminded of the sacrifice necessary the night that they left Egypt and it brought into sharp relief anything of Egypt's practices or attitudes that crept back into their lives. Next time you celebrate communion remember the sacrifice Jesus made for your freedom, but also take the time to evaluate what practices of the world you've allowed to creep back into your life.
Pastor Danny brings a heavy word today and a serious warning that we all need to hear. When Moses acted out of anger instead of faith, even after a lifetime of following God and learning to be a man of faith, that one act brought consequences. Moses wasn't allowed to bring the people into the land, he'd given his life for these people to bring them out of slavery and into the promise land but their failure left them in the wilderness for 40 years and his failure left him out of the promise land.
Moses came to a point of decision in his journey. On the one hand he can forget to choose the calling of God, rejoin Pharaohs household and enjoy a life of luxury. Or he could follow God, rejecting that easy life but instead becoming a leader in the family of faith. Have you come to that place of decision? Will you decide to pursue worldly wealth with the family of this world? Or have you given up the world for the family and kingdom of God? Your decisions have big implications.
We get to look at the story of Abrahams willingness to sacrifice Isaac from the other side of the story. As Pastor Danny says, we know that it is a picture of God's willingness to sacrifice His own son for us. We see the end of the story where God provides a ram in his place. But Abraham didn't know that end of the story, he didn't know that the ram was there. He just believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. What impossible situation are you facing in your life today? Will you believe in God just like Abraham did?
Abraham is considered the father of the faith. So today, Pastor Danny is going to take a look at Abraham's faith to see what we can learn from it. First, Abraham had to leave something behind in order to follow God. So what have you left? Have you left habits or friends that drag you down? Secondly, Abraham's faith was alive and he was in the world but not of it. When the world looks at you do they see a faith that lives? Do they see that you don't look like the rest of the world?
Today Pastor Danny shows us through scripture that God has done and is doing everything that he possibly can to ensure that no soul goes to hell. He's a God of justice, but His justice was satisfied when Jesus died on the cross and He longs for you to be in a relationship with Him. Have you said yes to God? He's already done all the work, He's just looking for a simple "yes" from you. He sent Jesus to die on the cross and to rise again so that you could rise with Him and enter into a true relationship with God.
Aren't you glad that you get to be on the side the holy God who has a plan for your salvation? Even though He is the holy one and we're the ones who have sinned against Him, he is the one that made a way for our sin to be erased. Pastor Danny is going to show us God's plan for salvation through faith today. You can encounter the merciful and compassionate God through simple faith. All you need to do to be saved is to respond to the plan that God made for your salvation, just say yes to Him today.
Pastor Danny shows us today that when you walk with God you're lifted above the earth and all its troubles and temptations. You're no longer live entrenched in sin, because you're walking with the Holy One. When you walk with God you see the things that He sees and you learn to see them in the way that He sees them. The world can be too much but you can have the eyes of heaven as you look at it. From heavens perspective nothing is too much for God to handle. Walk with him today and release your worries.
Pastor Danny is working through the book of Hebrews and the Hall of Faith. Today he is talking about men of God throughout the Bible who walked with God and he reminds us that the only way to do that is through faith in God. Even though we don't see God with our natural eyes, we can walk with Him through faith. So what about you? Are you walking with God? Are you in step with the creator? Or are you marching to your own drum? Lay down your agenda today and get instep with Jesus.
Pastor Danny is digging into a million reasons why we can believe what we believe today. Throughout history there have been arguments created to prove the existence of God, even the universe itself is arguing for the existence for an intelligent and involved creator. You can't look at the vastness of the universe or the complexity of a little tiny cell and not believe that these things were created with purpose. God created all things to speak to His existence so that we would have every reason to believe.
The faith of a Christ follower is faith like a child's. It's not blind, a child doesn't just trust anyone but a child does trust their father. Pastor Danny reminds us today to be ready to give an answer for the hope that we have, but that answer can be as simple as a child's answer, "I have hope because my daddy loves me. I can trust Him because I know He has good things planned. I can trust Him in even the hard times because I know He is helping me to grow." Don't have a blind faith. Know what it is that you believe and be ready to answer.
Your courage as a Christian affects more people then you might know. Have you ever been emboldened to stand up for your faith because you watched someone else do it. Pastor Danny develops this idea today that when I'm courageous as a follower of Jesus I encourage others to be courageous too. But when I back down I discourage others from standing. It's time to step up and live as fearless followers of Christ. Who knows what your courage could do? Who your courage could encourage.
It takes courage to follow God. It takes courage to suffer for Him. And sometimes you can suffer so much that you'll pull back. You give up a little bit and think that it's not worth it anymore, but you are called to be fearless in the face of suffering. What do you need to get back to that place of courage again? It's time to remember your first love. Remember when the consequences didn't matter because your reward was in heaven. Your reward is with Jesus. Take courage, my friend.
When we watch the power and authority of God work in the world through us, it's easy to get distracted. Jesus gives the disciples a world view adjustment and reminds them to rejoice more about their names being written in heaven then over any display of power anywhere here on earth. Pastor Danny says that all that stuff is for here, but your name in the lamb's book of life is forever. The greatest miracle ever preformed here on earth was Jesus on the cross giving his life for us. You can be in a right relationship with the father.
Under the old covenant, the Israelites would sacrifice animals to atone for their sins. It was a temporary sacrifice that needed to be repeated. But when Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice it was a one time sacrifice that covered every person and every sin forever. Pastor Danny is going to show us the result of that one time sacrifice today. That means that our sins are permanently covered, but on top of that the sacrifice of Jesus invited us into the family of God. We're coheirs with Christ!
