Ali is an independent journalist covering criminal justice, privacy, and surveillance. He won the 2017 George Polk Award for local reporting on the Oakland Police sex-crime scandal.  He is a former reporter for the New York Times and former fellow at Type Investigations. His investigative reporting has also led to prosecutions of members of neonazi organizations. He is co-writing a book on the history of the Oakland police department and co-hosts the podcast Surveillance and the City.
