A symbol of freedom standing atop the United States Capitol seems like the perfect representation of American ideals. But what if one of the people most responsible for bringing that symbol to life was himself enslaved? This week, Michael explores the remarkable true story of Philip Reid, the skilled craftsman whose expertise helped make the Statue of Freedom possible, and the extraordinary irony of a monument to liberty being completed during the Civil War by a man who gained his own freedom before it was finished. On June 9th, 2026, David Grush stood on the steps of the United States Capitol and moved from testimony to action. He was not alone. What happened on those steps, and what was confirmed about Varginha, Brazil for the first time in thirty years, is what this episode is about.Sitting members of Congress, Leslie Keane, James Fox, and the man who testified under penalty of perjury that the US government has recovered craft of non-human origin assembled at one in the afternoon with a single purpose. Fox opened by asking the President of the United States to declassify the Varginha files. The former Brazilian Minister of Defense confirmed publicly for the first time that in January 1996, a living non-human being was loaded into a police cruiser, transported to a hospital, and subsequently handed over to the US military. The officer who transported it was dead within three weeks. His widow was denied his death certificate and his medical records were seized by the Brazilian army the day after he died.Jared Moskowitz said plainly the American people were being lied to. Tim Burchett described being told in a classified briefing that the President of the United States is on a need-to-know basis. Leslie Keane asked the question nobody in official capacity has answered: by what authority can any institution on earth withhold confirmation of what may be the most consequential scientific discovery in human history? This is a special episode. No quick hits, no briefings. Just one story told the way it deserves to be told.Patreon: https://patreon.com/InfiniteRabbitHoleJeremy's Book: https://www.amazon.com/U-F-Elmwood-Cosmic-Puzzle/dp/B0GX1GBMZNYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@InfiniteRabbitHolePodcastWebsite: https://InfiniteRabbitHole.com

Donald Trump is still being sued for what he did on January 6, 2021: launching an attack on the United States Capitol to steal a presidential election from the American people. He is still being sued by several police officers who were assaulted that day by his angry mob, and he is still being sued by democratic lawmakers who were under siege that day as a result of the Trump-induced Capitol attack. In that ongoing litigation, Donald Trump asserted that everything he did on and around January 6, 2021, was an official presidential act so he should be immune from being sued. A federal judge has now rejected Trump's immunity claim, ruling that lawsuit against Donald Trump will move forward toward trial. This is an important ruling on the accountability front. And it may even serve as foreshadowing for what might happen in the future in the event the January 6 criminal prosecution is reinitiated against Trump once he leaves office.Find Glenn on Substack: glennkirschner.substack.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Breaking Point: Adam Kinzinger on January 6 and the Courage to Stand for Your Values What happens when standing by your values could cost you everything — your career, your friendships, even your sense of belonging? In this episode of Reppin, I sit down with former U.S. Congressman, U.S. Air Force veteran, and January 6 Committee member Adam Kinzinger to talk about the moment that became his breaking point: the January 6 United States Capitol attack. After 12 years representing Illinois in Congress, Adam Kinzinger made a decision that would define his career — speaking out after January 6 and choosing principle over party. The fallout was immediate: backlash, threats, lost friendships, and a life that would never look the same again. But this conversation goes beyond politics. On Reppin, Adam Kinzinger opens up about the fear and chaos inside the Capitol that day, the emotional toll that followed, and the faith that helped him navigate one of the hardest chapters of his life. He also shares why he founded Country First, a movement working to rebuild trust in American democracy and create space for Americans across political divides to disagree without losing their humanity. At its core, this episode is about courage, integrity, and the resilience it takes to stand by your values — even when the cost is high.

As recounts unfolded in the high-stakes Senate and governor's races, longtime GOP operative Roger Stone and a network of MAGA activists mobilized protests in Broward County, amplifying fraud claims and pressuring officials while influencers pushed the hashtag into the mainstream. Could we see a replay of this playbook in 2026? fWotD Episode 3197: Rosa Parks Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 4 February 2026, is Rosa Parks.Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an American civil rights activist. She is best known for her 1955 refusal to move from her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in defiance of Jim Crow racial segregation laws, which sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. She is sometimes known as the "mother of the civil rights movement".Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, Parks grew up under Jim Crow segregation. She later moved to Montgomery and joined the city's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1943, serving as the organization's secretary. Despite policies designed to disenfranchise Black citizens, Parks successfully registered to vote after three separate attempts between 1943 and 1945. She investigated cases and organized campaigns around cases of racial and sexual violence in her capacity as NAACP secretary, including those of Recy Taylor and Jeremiah Reeves, laying the groundwork for future civil rights campaigns.Custom in Montgomery required Black passengers to surrender their seats in the front of the bus to accommodate white riders. The rows in the back were designated for Black riders. Before Parks's refusal to move, several Black Montgomerians had refused to do so, including 15-year-old high school student Claudette Colvin, leading to arrests. When Parks was arrested in 1955, local leaders were searching for a person who would be a good legal test case against segregation. She was deemed a suitable candidate, and the Women's Political Council (WPC) organized a one-day bus boycott on the day of her trial. The boycott was widespread. Many Black Montgomerians refused to ride the buses that day. After Parks was found guilty of violating state law, the boycott was extended indefinitely, with the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) organizing its own community transportation network to sustain it. Parks and other boycott leaders faced harassment, ostracization, and various legal obstacles. The boycott lasted for 381 days, finally concluding after segregation on buses was deemed unconstitutional in the court case Browder v. Gayle. After the boycott ended, Parks experienced financial hardship and health problems due, in part, to her participation. In 1957, she relocated to Detroit, Michigan. She continued to advocate for civil rights, supporting people such as John Conyers, Joanne Little, Gary Tyler, Angela Davis, Joe Madison, and Nelson Mandela. She was also a supporter of the Black power movement and an anti-apartheid activist, participating in protests and conferences as part of the Free South Africa Movement. In 1987, she co-founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development with Elaine Eason Steele. After Parks's death in 2005, she was honored with public viewings and memorial services in three cities: in Montgomery; in Washington, D. C., where she lay in state at the United States Capitol rotunda; and in Detroit, where she was ultimately interred at Woodlawn Cemetery. Parks received many awards and honors, both throughout her life and posthumously. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Congressional Gold Medal, and was the first Black American to be memorialized in the National Statuary Hall. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:06 UTC on Wednesday, 4 February 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Rosa Parks on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Aditi.

In typical "tail-wagging-the-dog" fashion, Donald Trump tries to distract the attention of the American people from his many and mounting problems by launching an unlawful attack on a foreign sovereign nation, Venezuela. He then goes on TV on the morning of January 6th 2026, and gives a long, rambling press conference - his decline and dementia on full display - and tries to distract the American people from the fact that today marks the fifth anniversary of Trump's attack on and refusal to stop once in progress the United States Capitol. But Trump's distractions will fail. The people of the United States, who are dedicated to the rule of law and determined to preserve American democracy, will not be distracted. To that end, a group of us will be at an event at the National Press Club in DC to commemorate the January 6 anniversary. The event is being hosted by Jim Acosta and can be live streamed on Jim's Substack and YouTube channels. As Amanda's sabbatical begins, we are revisiting previous episodes of the podcast. This week marked the 5th anniversary of the January 6 attack on the Capitol. In today's episode of Respecting Religion, hear a conversation two years after the attack. Amanda and Holly share their reactions to the report released by the January 6 Select Committee at the end of 2022, including the lack of any mention of Christian nationalism and why that matters. They also discuss the importance of Christian leaders providing an alternative witness in 2023 to the Christian nationalism exhibited during the attack on the Capitol. And, they review how the insurrection still shapes our world and how it – surprisingly – doesn't shape Capitol tours. This program originally aired on January 12, 2023, in season 4 of Respecting Religion.   SHOW NOTES This episode was originally broadcast as episode 10 of season 4 in 2023. For another conversation about January 6 and Christian nationalism, check out S3, Ep. 12 from 2022. Segment 1 (starting at 01:06): The Select Committee Report Read the final report of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. Watch Amanda's testimony about Christian nationalism before a House subcommittee in December 2022 at this link. Amanda and Holly discuss it in more detail in episode 9 of season 10. Amanda and Holly mentioned this article by Vera Bergengruen for TIME Magazine: Why a Group of Christians Is Fighting the Growing Threat of Christian Nationalism Additional media coverage on the absence of Christian nationalism from the final report: Despite ample evidence, Christian nationalism mostly absent from final Jan. 6 report by Jack Jenkins for Religion News Service Christian nationalism conspicuously absent from January 6 report, featuring an interview with Amanda Tyler and MSNBC's Alicia Menendez on the Alex Wagner Tonight program   Segment 2 (starting at 21:01): Contrasting images on the 2nd anniversary of January 6 After this podcast was first released, BJC created a compilation of clips from the 2023 prayer vigil, which you can watch on BJC's YouTube channel.  See BJC's photos of the prayer vigil in this Instagram post. The week in Donald Trump's legal world has felt less like a series of isolated hearings and more like one long, rolling courtroom drama, shifting from New York to Washington and back again, with judges, jurors, and prosecutors all pulling on different threads of the same story. In New York, the civil fraud case that once delivered that massive judgment against Donald Trump and the Trump Organization is now in its post-trial grind, but it is far from over. New York Attorney General Letitia James is still pressing to enforce the judgment, while Trump's lawyers are working every angle on appeal, arguing that Judge Arthur Engoron overreached when he found that Trump, his adult sons, and senior executives systematically inflated the value of properties like Trump Tower and Mar-a-Lago to secure better loans and insurance. Outlets like the New York Times and the Associated Press have noted that the appeal filings in the past few days sharpened their focus on what they call “political bias” by New York state officials, framing the entire case as an effort to drive Trump out of business in his home state. At the same time, the state has been quietly filing its own responses to keep pressure on Trump's assets, setting up a long appellate fight.Down in federal court in Washington, the special counsel election interference case remains technically on track but practically bogged down in pretrial maneuvering. According to recent reporting by CNN and Politico, Trump's team has been leaning heavily on arguments of presidential immunity and First Amendment protection, trying to narrow what Special Counsel Jack Smith can present to a future jury about Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election, the fake electors plan, and the chaos leading up to January 6 at the United States Capitol. Judges on the D.C. Circuit have been working through dense briefing on whether a former president can ever be criminally prosecuted for “official acts,” and in the last few days, legal analysts at Lawfare and Just Security have been dissecting how those arguments might ripple into other Trump cases. At the same time, the classified documents prosecution in Florida has been crawling forward under Judge Aileen Cannon. NBC News and the Washington Post report that the most recent hearings have focused on what evidence can be excluded because of alleged mishandling by the FBI during the search at Mar-a-Lago, and how to protect national security secrets while still giving Trump's team access to the material they say they need to defend him. Prosecutors have kept pressing the core claim: that Trump knowingly kept highly sensitive documents at his private club and then obstructed efforts by the National Archives and the Department of Justice to get them back. Trump's lawyers, in turn, have tried to reframe the case as a dispute over records that should have been handled under the Presidential Records Act rather than as a crime scene.Meanwhile, in Georgia, the state election interference case in Fulton County remains a looming threat even as no trial has begun. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, defense lawyers for Trump and several co-defendants have spent these last days filing motions to limit the racketeering charges brought by District Attorney Fani Willis, arguing that normal political advocacy is being criminalized. The pressure there is less about a trial date and more about whether the sweeping racketeering structure survives early challenges.Stack all of this together, and what you have over these past few days is a picture of Donald Trump not in a single courtroom showdown, but in a legal siege on multiple fronts, each case feeding into the political and personal narrative he presents to his supporters as he continues to seek power again.Thank you for tuning in, and come back next week for more. There has been a lot happening around Donald Trump's time in court, so let's jump straight into the action from the listener's point of view, with an eye on the last several days and the broader arc those days fit into.Picture walking into a courthouse where a former president, now again President Donald Trump, is not just a political figure but a criminal and civil defendant in multiple jurisdictions. In New York, listeners have watched Trump fight civil claims over the way his business valued properties and represented its finances, a saga that has turned routine numbers on balance sheets into front-page drama. Judges there have heard testimony about Trump Organization practices, property valuations, and internal emails, all while Trump alternates between sitting stone-faced in court and stepping outside to attack prosecutors and judges in front of cameras. In those hallways, reporters cluster around, noting every word as Trump calls the cases witch hunts and insists that the real verdict will come from voters, not juries. At the same time, federal criminal cases have loomed in the background, especially those tied to efforts to overturn the 2020 election and Trump's conduct around January 6 at the United States Capitol. Listeners have heard references to sprawling indictments that describe fake electors, pressure campaigns on state officials, and efforts to use the machinery of government to cling to power. In those cases, the legal fight in recent days has often been less about witnesses on the stand and more about high‑stakes motions: Trump's lawyers arguing that a president should enjoy broad immunity for acts in office, and prosecutors countering that no one, not even a president, is above the law. Judges have been pressed to decide whether Trump's status as a current president changes how quickly these trials should move or how far immunity should stretch over his past conduct.Layered on top of that are cases over classified documents found at Mar‑a‑Lago, where federal prosecutors have claimed Trump mishandled national security secrets and obstructed efforts to retrieve them. In hearings linked to that prosecution, lawyers have clashed over how sensitive evidence is handled, whether the government is overreaching, and whether the case can realistically be brought to trial while Secret Service details, political schedules, and national security clearances all hover over every practical decision. Listeners are reminded again and again that the same man at the defense table is commanding federal agencies from the Oval Office.Recent days have also kept attention on the political and legal collision course these trials represent. Court calendars have brushed up against campaign rallies and official events, raising the question of whether judges should delay proceedings to avoid interfering with a sitting president's duties, or whether delay would itself be a kind of special treatment no other defendant would receive. Prosecutors have argued that justice delayed is justice denied, while Trump's team has claimed that rushing to trial would amount to election interference by other means. Outside the courthouses, supporters shout that the system is rigged, while critics insist that accountability is finally catching up with decades of behavior. All of this has turned the courts into a kind of second campaign trail, one paved with subpoenas instead of yard signs. Listeners have watched as familiar names—prosecutors, former aides, state attorneys general, and federal judges—become recurring characters in an unfolding story about power, responsibility, and consequence. Every filing, every ruling, and every brief hearing becomes another data point in the question that hangs over all of this: can the United States legal system put a sitting president to the test in the same way it would any other citizen. Thanks for tuning in and staying with this unfolding story of Donald Trump's trials in America's courts. In 2016, Jamie Raskin was elected to Congress from Maryland just as Donald Trump was first elected president. Raskin, a former constitutional law professor, and Trump, a real estate developer who flouts rules and shatters norms, have been locked in a struggle ever since. When Congress impeached Trump in 2021 for inciting an insurrection, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi tapped Raskin to be lead impeachment manager, essentially Trump's chief prosecutor. He subsequently served on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. Raskin is now the Ranking Member of the powerful House Judiciary Committee and has been a vocal adversary of the Trump administration. In the past few weeks, he has accused U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Krisi Noem of “unlawfully detaining U.S. citizens,” demanded that Trump explain “a blatantly illegal and unconstitutional effort to steal $230 million from the American people” and denounced “military-style tactics” in Chicago. Jamie Raskin represents Maryland's 8th Congressional District, which borders Washington, D.C. He has authored several books, including the bestseller “Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth and the Trials of American Democracy,” a searing exploration of the death of his son and the struggle to defend democracy under Trump. I spoke with Rep. As lead investigator into both January 6 and Charlottesville, Tim Heaphy discovered that American democracy was headed toward a reckoning. In his book Harbingers, which he completed before the November 2024 election, Tim concluded that apathy poses greater threats to the rule of law than would-be autocrats, and that widespread civic engagement would be essential to safeguarding our values and restoring faith in our institutions. He proposes a number of everyday measures that Americans can and must start taking right now in order to restore our faith and hope in the future.rnrnHeaphy served as Chief Investigative Counsel of the House of Representatives Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. He also oversaw the independent investigation into the August 12, 2017 riot in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is currently a partner at Willkie, Farr & Gallagher LLP and previously served as the Obama-appointed US Attorney for the Western District of Virginia. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with his family.

Send us a text[What was it like to defend clients in prosecutions arising out of events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021?  A discussion with defense counsel Rocco Cipparone and Angie Levy]Following the events at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, the federal government initiated one of the largest investigations and prosecutions in American history, ultimately charging nearly 1,600 defendants.  Those charges resulted in about 1,270 convictions (most, for misdemeanor offenses).  Upon entering Office on January 21, 2025, President Trump fulfilled a campaign promise in granting clemency to these defendants—pardoning or commuting the sentences of those convicted, and ordering the dismissal, by the U.S. Department of Justice, of remaining pending cases.  We had the opportunity to talk with two guests who had a front-row seat to the January 6 prosecutions, through their representation of clients in January 6 trials held in federal court in Washington, D.C.  Rocco Cipparone and Angie Levy are two well-regarded and respected members of the Philadelphia and New Jersey criminal defense communities, and recognized as terrific trial lawyers.  It was a great pleasure to have them with us to discuss the January 6 prosecutions.

This week Taylor spoke with John Protevi about his recently published book, Regimes of Violence: Toward a Political Anthropology. John is professor of French studies and philosophy at Louisiana State University. He is author of Political Affect; Life, War, Earth; and Edges of the State, all published by the University of Minnesota Press. Book Summary: A wide-ranging examination of the roots—and possible future—of violence in human societies Is aggression inevitable among humans? In Regimes of Violence, John Protevi explores how human violence originates and exists in our societies. Taking humans as biocultural (that is, our social practices shape our bodies and minds), he shows how aggression does not arrive from any purely biological predisposition but rather occurs only in social regimes of violence that, by manipulating the ways in which culture can shape our biological inheritance of rage and aggression, condition the forms of violence able to be expressed at any one time. Offering detailed insights into human aggression throughout history, Protevi's analysis ranges from evolutionary psychology to affective ideology and finally to an alternate politics of joy. He examines a wide range of seemingly disparate topics, such as cooperation between early nomadic foragers, organized sports, berserkers and blackout rages, the experiences of maroons escaping slavery, the January 6 invasion of the United States Capitol building, and responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. As he entwines the philosophical with the anthropological, he asks readers to consider why humans' capacity for cooperation and sharing is so persistently overlooked by stories that focus on aggression and warfare. Regimes of Violence is an important contribution to studies of Deleuze and Guattari, uniquely combining cutting-edge investigations in psychology, history, evolutionary theory, cultural anthropology, and philosophy to examine the “political philosophy of the mind.” Presenting to readers a refreshingly optimistic perspective, Protevi demonstrates that we are not doomed to war and argues that humans can build a world based on antifascism, joy, and mutual empowerment. One of President Donald Trump's first actions as president was simple and sweeping: pardoning 1,500 people convicted of offenses related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. That single executive action undid years of work and investigation by the FBI, US prosecutors, and one person in particular: Tim Heaphy.Heaphy was the lead investigative counsel for the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, and he's arguably done more than anyone to piece together what happened that day. His work helped inform related cases that were brought against rioters, Trump administration officials, and even Trump himself. In the first episode of More To The Story, Heaphy talks to host Al Letson about how Trump swept aside those consequences; the overlap between the January 6 attack and the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia; and what Trump's pardons mean for the country going forward.Check out the Reveal episode Viral Lies, in which we dig into the origins of “Stop the Steal.”Support our journalism at Revealnews.org/donatenowSubscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the scoop on new episodes at Revealnews.org/weeklyInstagramMore To The Story team:Kara McGuirk-Allison, Josh Sanburn, Al Letson Taki Telonidis, Brett Myers, Fernando Arruda, Jim Briggs, Nikki Frick, Kate Howard, Artis Curiskis Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

It was donated by the state of Arkansas and it is the first-ever statue of a musician in the collection. To celebrate, we invite you to take a new listen to the very first episode of What It Takes.  You'll hear the deeply introspective Cash near the end of his career (1993). He reflects on how he overcame considerable personal obstacles and turned his failures into the stepping stones to success.
