//The Wire//2300Z March 28, 2025////PRIORITY////BLUF: MAJOR EARTHQUAKES STRIKE BURMA AND THAILAND, THOUSANDS OF CASUALTIES ESTIMATED. DIPLOMATIC ACTIONS CONTINUE IN UKRAINE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Southeast Asia: A very large earthquake (and many aftershocks) struck the region this morning, primarily within the nations of Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand. The epicenter of the Burmese earthquake was located almost exactly under the city of Mandalay, Burma's second largest city. Early estimates indicate the earthquake's magnitude was 7.7, larger than usual for the region. In Thailand, several aftershocks were felt and have caused damage through much of the northwest. A state of emergency remains in effect throughout most of Burma, and parts of Thailand that have been hardest hit. Many skyscrapers and high-rise buildings have collapsed in Bangkok, about 600 miles from the epicenter.AC: This earthquake is a big deal, with most authorities estimating thousands, if not tens of thousands of casualties spread throughout the region. Right now, numbers are impossible to verify as most communications networks throughout Burma and Thailand (which barely functioned before the earthquake) are simply overwhelmed. Additionally, since Burma has been living under a state of military coup for several years, communications blackouts have been the norm to prevent access to the internet by locals. As such these censorship efforts probably will have a negative impact on determining the scale of the crisis in Burma.Eastern Europe: The potential for peace in Ukraine remains on the table as diplomatic efforts remain constant. Overnight, President Putin gave a very frank and direct talk regarding his concerns for the war coming to a close. One of his chief concerns is the legitimacy of peace; in short, Putin stated that he's not sure if a peace agreement with Zelenskyy would be legally binding, because he is not the elected leader of Ukraine (referencing the fact that elections have been suspended in Ukraine, and Zelenskyy's term of office expired some time ago).-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Though many may scoff at listening to anything Putin says, his remarks last night provide some much needed insight into his perspective during negotiations. For instance, from Putin's perspective, regime change is a non-starter. From where Putin sits, Zelenskyy must go even if that means ousting him and creating an interim transitional government while elections take place. Considering his strangely direct remarks, he probably would be amenable to a ceasefire while Ukrainian elections take place, but that's sheer speculation at best.Rightly or wrongly, and like it or not, Zelenskyy remaining in office is one of the biggest barriers to peace and Russia has made it clear that they will continue fighting as long as he is in power. Zelenskyy himself did make it illegal for any ceasefire or peace talks to even happen with Putin, that is an undeniable fact that is complicating things quite a bit. Of course, on the other side of the issue, Russia wants to come out of this war in the best position possible, and a transitional government where everyone is vying for power would be politically advantageous to Russia.Fundamentally, opinions will vary on what is happening as long as those interpreting the diplomatic efforts adopt certain opinions. For instance, if a person thinks that Putin is hellbent on taking the entire continent of Europe, one analytical perspective will be adopted. If a person thinks that Putin just wants to make a minor land grab and isn't interested in land outside of Ukraine, another analytical perspective will be used. This is one of the major reasons for analytical discrepancy throughout the conflict, and is why the terms of a peace agreement might be confusing to many people who had believed one set of beliefs about the

June 4 marked the 34th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, in which the Chinese Communist Party put down a pro-democracy protest movement that had bubbled up in Tiananmen Square and throughout mainland China. For many, it served as a stark reminder the brutality of the country that, under the autocratic leadership of Mao Zedong killed between 40 and 80 million of its own people, could still be just as brutal.Tiananmen happened just three years before Benedict Rogers moved to China to begin teaching English. For Rogers, this marked the beginning of a professional career focused on issues in and around China and Hong Kong that saw him work as a journalist in Hong Kong for the first five years after the handover to traveling to China's borders with Myanmar/Burma and North Korea to document the plight of refugees escaping from Beijing-backed satellite dictatorships and then campaigning for human rights in China, especially for Uyghurs, Christians and Falun Gong practitioners, human rights defenders, journalists and dissidents, and the people of Hong Kong.Rogers, who today runs the organization Hong Kong Watch, a watchdog organization which researches and monitors threats to Hong Kong's basic freedoms, the rule of law and autonomy as promised under the ‘one country, two systems' principle which is enshrined in the Basic Law and the Sino-British Joint Declaration, is the author of the new book, “The China Nexus: Thirty Years In and Around the Chinese Communist Party's Tyranny.”In the book, Rogers takes the readers on a journey through some of the leaders and participants in the Human rights activities that China has suppressed since its inception in 1949. He goes on to dispute and lays to rest all of the specious claims by the tyrants in Beijing that all Chinese citizens are equal and are afforded human and civil rights. Currently, the regime is engaged in re-education, cultural assimilation, and multiple genocides, leading to better citizens for China and the world if one believes Chinese officials.Today, Eric Kohn talks with Benedict Rogers about his book, China's history, its rise as a global power, its record on human rights, and what the future holds the Chinese Communist Party and the people under it's thumb. As teachers, we can create a safe and supportive learning environment where students can develop their emotional intelligence skills and improve their academic performance. The development of emotional intelligence can be particularly helpful for students living in hotspots, since they may experience trauma and deal with high levels of stress and uncertainty. I took the opportunity to interview Saw Ehta Ler from Myanmar (Burma) to find out how students can develop resilience in order to help them bounce back after difficult experiences and keep learning and growing.Like the show? This week, on The Conscious Consultant Hour, Sam is joined by International Meditation Teacher, Nandar Matari.Nandar is a mediation coach with 28 years of proven mediation experience. She was born and raised in Myanmar (Burma), where she learned Vipassana mindfulness meditation. Later in her career, as a consultant and sales manager in financial services, she was trained in Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques to improve her own personality for better performance. Over time, she began to train her fellow team members, leading to her being named Best Team Leader in the company in 2011.Nandar was born and raised in Myanmar (Burma), where she started learning and practicing the precious ancient methods of mindfulness and meditations from many Buddhist monks and masters. She worked in different careers as English Teacher in Myanmar, Financial Consultant and later as a Sales Manager and Recruiting Specialist in Germany. In spite of her great professional successes, she did not feel fulfilled and she decided to follow her passion of teaching meditations since 2014.After further study in mind, body and spirit correlations and energy healing, Nandar began to understand the healing, spontaneous change and quantum shifts that occur when people get in touch with their own souls and begin seeing their feelings and emotions from a higher perspective. Out of her background, experience and studies, she has developed a series of powerful meditations which can transform your life in a short period of time. She has created different forms of guided meditations and taught to a couple of thousand people in groups and individual settings in Frankfurt, New York City, Myanmar, Singapore and Zurich in the past 8 years. She is currently living in Zurich, Switzerland.Tune in for this enlightening conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by Clicking Here.Show NotesSegment 1Sam begins the podcast reading an excerpt from his book “Everyday Awakening: You Are More Powerful Than You Know.” The passage focuses on our tendencies that focus too much on doing, and how we must rather focus on being. Sam finds that when we take the time to focus on what we want to BE, what we want to DO becomes increasingly more obvious. He warns that a persistent focus on doing can become a trap, hooking us on pursuing the next goal, the next thing to do, But if all we focus on is what to be, then are we actually DOING anything? Harmony is the key, and Sam reiterates that it takes time to master this flow, but the reward is very worth itSegment 2Returning from the break Sam asks Nandar more about her life after studying meditation at the monastery. Nadar's first meditation experience was in 1993, after this experience instead of following in her parents wishes for her to attend medical school, instead she decided to follow her pursuits in meditation globally, for a short time visiting the Taiwan border region in order to see and experience the tragedies going on there their firsthand. After this she pursued a career as an English teacher, frequently returning to the Buddhist monastery she studied at in her years post high school. After some time Nandar found it imperative to leave Myanmar and the surrounding region due to the increasingly hostile political climate. After some trials in finding where to go and how she would get there, ultimately Nandar left for Germany in 2005. Upon arriving in the country she started the process of establishing herself professionally all over again, now having to learn German and financial consulting at a new company. Nandar cites her time, training, and consistency in meditation as the driving force behind her journey, often finding herself listening to her heart to make decisions regarding the directionality of her career/life path, urging listeners to follow in her steps to achieve the proper balance and understanding of our driving forces that we all need in our lives.Segment 3Returning from the break, Sam asks Nandar about her motivations and inspiration behind the efforts of spreading the knowledge of daily meditation and self awareness. Nandar remarks that the process was less associated with any individual incident but rather was the culmination of many realizations and experiences throughout her life, having reached various positions in a field she was less than enthusiastic about and finding that the accomplishments were not fulfilling her need for self awareness. After this process of realizing her unhappiness in her career, Nandar says it was guidance from God that finally gave her the vision of spreading her awareness and skills in meditation to others, it was after following in this goal that she began to feel her own depression and unfulfillment shed away. Sam segues into asking what differences and what benefits can come from various forms of meditation, such as group meditation or solo, and for what kind of people these are ideal for. Nandar explains that each individual person will respond to different forms of meditation with varying levels of success and interaction, and that it is most important for them to find what works for their needs. She does however stress that oftentimes group meditation can better facilitate learning and opening up better than personal pursuits in meditation.Segment 4Nandar is currently working on a Book “Following the Spark '' focusing on following each individual person's inner path and desire, letting it guide them in their lives to where they need to be emotionally, spiritually, professionally, and physically. Her other book “Beyond Limits' 'is about the universal principles that guide our universe, and how we can live our lives in line with these basic principles of life and spirituality. She hopes readers can use these concepts to overcome their limiting thoughts and belief systems, and instead lead a life based on our personal desires. Sam and Nandar go on to talk about how they have found the pandemic has changed the number of people who seek out spiritual guidance, finding that the pandemic has led many people to focus on their own mental state and seek spiritual help. Nandar finds that people oftentimes seek out inner control and stability during difficult times, leading to the influx of people interested in Meditation. Before leaving Nandar urges that anyone interested in learning more about Meditation and her pursuits and methodologies should seek her out on her website; as well as Facebook and Linkedin where listeners can find recordings of her guided meditation as well as other services and resources for meditation and related pursuits.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-conscious-consultant-hour8505/donations

"Coaching is asking. It's even better when you don't know how to do that person's job because they work in a different industry to you. All you can do is ask and that is pure coaching. It's an 80-20 ratio of speaking to listening - 80 percent of the time your job is to listen and to ask but not know the answer. Often the client thinks you do know the answer but actually you really don't and that makes the coaching pure coaching. It resists becoming mentoring, or telling, or advising. It sits next to psychotherapy - I am very much informed by psychotherapy, particularly the psychoanalytic stance in psychotherapy. I'm informed by it and borrow from its best ethics of good practice."     Episode Description: Rachel describes the similarities and differences between coaching and psychotherapy on the one hand and mentoring on the other. She emphasizes the fundamental importance of listening - her 80-20 rule. We discuss examples from her book on her coaching a leader of aid workers in Somalia, a coach of diversely disabled athletes at the 2016 Paralympic Games, and a woman from Pakistan who had to deal with conflicting feelings and realities when faced with an influx of Afghan refugees. In all examples, we hear of Rachel's capacity for nuance, ambiguity, and dedication to each individual's life story. We close with her recounting her own personal journey.    Our Guest: Rachel Ellison is a former BBC news reporter. She was awarded an MBE – Member of the Order of the British Empire – by Queen Elizabeth II / or by the Queen for her work on human rights and women's self-empowerment in Afghanistan. Her team was awarded BBC Team of the Year, in recognition of her coaching style of leadership with her all Afghan, all-female collective of journalists.    At the BBC, Rachel volunteered to train as an executive leadership coach and then went on to set up her own consultancy. She has led and coached across more than 40 different cultures, tribes, nations, and organizational systems around the world, including post-conflict zones and emerging economies such as Myanmar/Burma, Iraq & Syria, Kenya, and the former Soviet Union. Rachel coaches from a psychoanalytic stance – believing this approach to be intense, creative and generating of deep insight for individuals and organizations.  Rachel has been a guest lecturer at Birkbeck University London, at Oxford and Cambridge universities in the UK, and to speak at international conferences throughout Europe. (This is part 2 of a 2 part discussion. We highly recommend listening to part 1 before starting this episode). In February of 2021, Myanmar's military leadership annulled the results of a general election and removed the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, from power. Popular resistance immediately erupted in response to the coup, but the military has responded with an increasingly violent crackdown. The military has dominated politics in Myanmar for decades, with NLD and Suu Kyi having long been the darlings of Western liberals (the latter enjoying an almost saintly media status for a time). But what is really going on here? Geoff Aung joins us this week to discuss the coup, growing resistance, as well as the broader political context that set the stage for these events. We cover a lot of ground - everything from how Myanmar's colonial past still haunts the present to the history of Burmese left.   Geoff Aung is a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Columbia University, with a research focus on Southern Myanmar.
