May 24th is the 35th anniversary of the bombing of Earth First!ers Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney. To commemorate we're reposting our interview from last year with Earth First!'s Karen Pickett. Here's the blurb from last year's episode:On May 24, 1990, a car bomb ripped through environmental and labor organizer Judi Bari's car nearly killing her and her comrade Darryl Cherney. Bari and Cherney were part of Earth First's Headwaters campaign and had fought long and hard to stop clear-cutting redwood forests in Northern California by ravenous timber companies. They were organizing a campaign that summer called "Redwood Summer" that had planned to do mass action against logging. The F.B.I. and the Oakland police immediately arrested Bari and Cherney as the culprits in their own bombing. Judi Bari passed away from cancer in 1997. In 2002, Bari (posthumously) and Cherney won a $4.4 million lawsuit against the F.B.I. and the Oakland PD for violating their civil rights. May 24 is now an official holiday in the city of Oakland. In our latest episode, we talk with Earth First! organizer Karen Pickett (@KP4redwoods), a close friend and comrade of Bari and Cherney, about Earth First!, the Northern California timber wars, Judi Bari's role as environmental and labor organizer, the bombing and the subsequent lawsuit. Bio//Karen Pickett has been a grassroots activist for over 40 years. She is a founder and Director of the Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters, Biocentric Media Inc. and other organizations. She has been part of Earth First! for decades.---------------------------------------------------Outro- "The FBI Stole My Fiddle" by Judi Bari and Darryl CherneyLinks//+The Judi Bari Website: http://www.judibari.org/+Zinn Education Project: Judi Bari's Car Bombed (https://bit.ly/3yDJ2RS)Follow Green and Red//+G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast+Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/+We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/+ Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/yYsmTEkd)Support the Green and Red Podcast//+Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandRThis is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. It may just be a legal technicality, or it may be a sign that the FBI smells something fishy with the Oakland PD, as the latest federal subpoena in “Sheng Thao raid-gate” asks for a slew of records from the Oakland Police Department.

As we've reported on KCBS, Oakland's police department continues to be immersed in an internal affairs scandal, making it unclear how much longer the department will be under federal oversight. And although it was set to end this May, officials are now saying they may need more time. For more KCBS Radio's Eric Thomas spoke with KCBS Insider Phil Matier.

For two decades, Oakland's police force has operated under court oversight — forced to reform itself as a result of a lawsuit brought by victims of the Riders, a group of officers accused of beating and framing people in front of a rookie cop who blew the whistle. Now, as OPD looks for another chief after the firing of LeRonne Armstrong, the department's failings are the subject of a new book, “The Riders Come out at Night.” Co-author Darwin BondGraham joins host Demian Bulwa to talk about the department's troubled history and current roadblocks to reform. | Unlimited Chronicle access: sfchronicle.com/pod Got a tip, comment, question? The Oakland Police Department was outed earlier this week for requesting to acquire a robot armed with a shotgun – a weapon that they said would generally be loaded with blank ammunition, but that they would consider using with regular shotgun shells should they desire. Since the story was covered by The Intercept, the Oakland Police Department has said that they are no longer pursuing the acquisition at this time, but the reporter who covered the story initially has worries about the department's future intentions and how these robotic systems are used by law enforcement nationally. We are joined in this episode by that reporter – Sam Biddle focuses on malfeasance and misused power in technology for The Intercept, and has published stories for Gawker, Gizmodo, GQ, Vice, and The Awl. What's it like to be a “non-traditional” art student at age 55? For Texas-based portrait painter CLIFFORD BUNN, seeking a BFA in Studio Art after a career in law enforcement with the Oakland PD was both cathartic and the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. As a police officer, Cliff worked among “the layers of lives existing around us” that most of us don't see, but he often felt like his own voice was not being heard either. Initially turning to art as a therapeutic way of dealing with grief for loss of his son and other family members, Cliff eventually decided to seek a degree in Studio Art at the University of Texas. Cliff shares his fascinating journey from the streets of Oakland to art school critiques, as he begins the next phase of life as a working artist. His perspective is unique, current and inspiring for artists at all stages of their own art exploration. It's a six-pack of DVR clutter this week as I let you know what I'm granting a continuance...or a motion to dismiss. Netflix's latest on Henry Lee Lucas, plus a Frontline on a predator on the reservation, a doc on Oakland PD, the continuing fascination with the murder of Martha Moxley, yet more JonBenét Ramsey theories, and a new hope for the oldest profession. Back in 1997 - I called Matthew Luque seeking contact information for his close friend, Kelly Strathman. Matthew's name was given to me by a co-worker of Kristien's at Spinelli's Coffee in San Francisco. Matthew had no idea who I was when his phone rang. He was very polite to me after I introduced myself to him. The instant (literally) I mentioned 'Kristen Modafferi's name', Matt did a 180 and became very hostile and told me to never call him again. He then hung up the phone. It made no sense. Come to find out that a few weeks later - Oakland PD raid suspect Jon Onuma and Jill Lampo's apartment and they find an address book with Matthew Luque's name in it. Turns out that Jill Lampo broke up with Matthew Luque to start dating Jon Onuma. Soon after Kristen's disappearance, Luque starts working at the same Spinelli's coffee shop that Kristen worked at.
