We're back with another installment in our critically acclaimed "Who the Hell?" biographical series, this time sitting down to scrutinize Michael Tracey: a contrarian writer and social media personality who has managed to draw a surprising amount of attention to himself throughout the Trump era.Jared and Mike are joined by guest Bobby Silverman to review the arc of Tracey's career, from his early run-in with police at an Ann Coulter event to his eventual rise in media as a pugnacious hater of political pundits and journalists. This episode explores how Tracey, a self-described "roving journalist," has channeled his resentment for contemporary media into attention-seeking episodes of confrontation and contrarianism that have earned him fans among right-wing audiences. After this episode, the corrupt woke media will never be the same.Transition Music: "Tide Rips" by Bering Sea
We currently have a reported 60-day framework on the table between the United States and Iran that would temporarily extend the current ceasefire dynamics and create space for renewed nuclear negotiations. To be clear, it's not a breakthrough deal. This feels like a pressure valve built to prevent escalation from snapping back while both sides decide whether they can actually land something bigger. The center of gravity here is the Strait of Hormuz. That is where the entire arrangement becomes real or falls apart. The reported structure prioritizes restoring and guaranteeing commercial shipping through the strait, easing maritime restrictions, and reducing the risk of renewed disruption in one of the most important energy chokepoints on the planet. In exchange, Iran would gain movement on sanctions relief and potentially access to frozen funds, while the United States would push for verifiable constraints on uranium enrichment and clearer handling of existing stockpiles.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Nobody is pretending this is a final settlement. It reads more like a staged de-escalation plan: stabilize shipping first, then attempt to negotiate the more politically radioactive issues like enrichment levels, inspection access, and long-term nuclear limits. The idea is to reduce immediate risk before trying to solve the underlying conflict. That underlying conflict is the same one that has defined U.S.–Iran relations for decades. Economic relief in exchange for nuclear restraint. The structure is familiar, even if the packaging is not. Anyone watching this unfold will recognize echoes of past negotiations, especially the JCPOA framework, where the core trade was access to global markets in return for limits on Iran's nuclear program. The political debate around that model has never really gone away, and it is very much present again here. The fragility of the situation is obvious in the way it is being described. Working-level agreement is one thing. Leadership approval is another. That gap is where deals like this tend to stall, shift, or collapse entirely. Even small changes in political appetite can rewire the entire structure.Still, this feels like the first tangible step towards restoring reliable, uninterrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. If that actually does happen, everything else becomes more plausible. If it does not, the rest of the framework is just another document waiting for even events to overtake it. God knows we've seen enough of those.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:07 - Iran Deal?00:10:49 - Interview with Michael Tracey00:36:18 - Update/LA Mayor Polling00:39:46 - Trump's AI Deal00:43:43 - 2028 Dem Frontrunners00:46:09 - Interview with Michael Tracey, con't01:25:16 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. The article describes a heated confrontation between journalists at a Substack party following the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where tensions escalated over coverage related to Jeffrey Epstein. Former CNN journalist Jim Acosta and independent reporter Michael Tracey clashed after Acosta accused Tracey of aggressively confronting and “bullying” Epstein investigator Julie K. Brown. Tracey later claimed on social media that Acosta challenged him to a fight, allegedly telling him to “step outside,” and said he would have followed through if security hadn't intervened. The situation spiraled further online, with Tracey continuing to taunt Acosta and even inviting him to meet outside a hotel to continue the altercation. Acosta pushed back, accusing Tracey of harassing behavior toward Brown and saying multiple people, including security, had to step in to protect her. Brown herself supported that account, stating that Tracey had been yelling at her and physically blocking her from leaving the event, and credited Acosta and others for interveningto contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:'Step outside': Journalists almost come to blows over EpsteinBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comEric Swalwell did not have a good week. Actually, last week was very bad, when articles hit CNN and The San Francisco Chronicle within hours of each other, a one-two punch alleging a series of unsavory acts, including sexual assault. Then earlier this week, another woman accused him of drugging, choking, and raping her. She's filed a criminal complaint. Swalwell has ended his run for governor, resigned from Congress and possibly public life. But what went on back there? The downfall was so fast, it's worth slowing down the tape, especially if (like Sarah) last week happens to be when you learned a person named Eric Swalwell existed. Nancy and Sarah's conversation includes a discussion of drinking and consent, what we know (and don't know) about roofies, and the strange impulse to return to a bad sexual situation and try to wrest back control. Also discussed:* Ft. Worth is the Brooklyn of Dallas* Nancy confuses what she heard on The Fifth Column with real life* If Katie Porter is the best California can do …* PSA: Don't fuck the interns* “sexual revictimization cycle” * Nancy offers a translation: If he has not seen you in five years and says he cannot stop thinking about you, he wants in your pants * “Will you help me out?”

Doug Scott examines Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's March 25 Pentagon prayer—asking God for “every round” to find its mark—and argues it reveals a dangerous politicized liturgy that sanctifies annihilation, misuses Christ's name, and feeds a planetary thought-form he calls the Great BASH. Scott traces the theological, psychological, and institutional stakes, contrasts this moment with Francis of Assisi's encounter with the Sultan, and urges readers to recognize and resist the conflation of sacred language with redemptive violence. -- Endnotes 1. The Greek diabolos derives from dia- (“across, through”) + ballein (“to throw”), literally “to throw across/apart.” Its opposite is symbolon, from sym- (“together”) + ballein, literally “to throw together.” The Septuagint translators chose diabolos to render the Hebrew satan (“adversary”). 2. At a gathering of Christian broadcasters in February, Hegseth said of the Pentagon services: “We hear a lot from the ‘freedom from religion' crowd. They hate it. Imes connects the priestly bearing of God's name on Aaron's garments (Exodus 28:12, 29) to Israel's commissioning as a nation of priests (Exodus 19:5–6), arguing that “carrying God's name” means representing God's character faithfully through one's actions. 19. “The Innocence of God: The Third Commandment: Building the Religious Counterculture,” Tikkun 31, no. 2 (April 2016). Jared and Mike dive into the growing world of contrarian punditry that seeks to downplay Jeffrey Epstein's child sex abuse and discourage audiences from drawing conclusions about his connections to some of the world's wealthiest and most powerful people. They take a closer look at one online personality, Michael Tracey, to unpack this surreal and alarming trend.Later, they're joined by Ileana Justine, a journalist and content creator whose analysis of how Epstein and his powerful friends shaped the world millennial women were raised in recently went viral on Instagram and TikTok. They discuss the importance of confronting the impact of the Epstein Files on women, the harm encouraged by contrarian punditry that dismisses it, and which children's movies have the best soundtracks.Links for Ileana:Instagram (@ileana.justine) TikTok (@ileana.justine)Links for us:Join us in Washington, DC, for the release of Mike's first book, "Strange People on the Hill": Politics & Prose, April 11 @ 5pm (Free)Transition Music: “Time Capsule” by Fields & Forests
Journalist Michael Tracey joins Bridget to dissect the Epstein moral panic currently swallowing the internet whole—and he's got the receipts on why most of it is "conspiracy-brain melted slop." As one of the only journalists pushing back on the dominant narrative, Tracey breaks down what we actually know versus what people want to believe: the FBI's fraudulent "1000 victims" number, why the Alex Acosta "sweetheart deal" wasn't actually a sweetheart deal, how Whitney Webb's "research" is a joke, and why the evidence doesn't support the blackmail ring everyone's convinced exists. They cover audience capture turning podcasters into Pizzagate truthers, the billion-dollar Epstein economy, how this has become less about facts and more like a new internet religion, politicians resigning over jocular emails, people screaming about eating babies in airports, why skepticism has devolved into nihilism, and the class war undertones fueling the hysteria. Check out Michael's Substack - https://www.mtracey.net/ #MichaelTracey #EpsteinFiles #AudienceCapture #Journalism #DumpsterFire Topics covered: Jeffrey Epstein primary source evidence, audience capture in alternative media, Alex Acosta deposition facts, Whitney Webb research critique, the psychology of moral panics.

UnHerd's Freddie Sayers talks to journalist Michael Tracey about the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and what Tracey describes as a "moral panic" surrounding the Epstein scandal. Tracey challenges the mainstream narrative, arguing that the case against the former Prince relies on fictionalised accounts and inconsistent testimony from the late Virginia Giuffre, and by examining recently surfaced FBI memos and the charges of misconduct in public office, suggests that the current constitutional crisis is driven more by mass hysteria and media credulity than by unassailable legal evidence. I am getting sick of the topic because I am watching it get kookified before my eyes. I saw the same thing happen to 911 Truth. By the way, we just reached 200 Restacks on Empire Unmasked. If you have not seen or shared that yet you should start on it. The Epstein saga has reached McCarthy like hysteria where anyone “in the file” regardless of the context is being subjected to a witch hunt. Anyone except the ones who deserve the witch hunt. Now what are the odds of that? Epstein's cronies are still in power. This IS the Deep State.I kind of enjoy watching my cut-and-pasters get wrecked when they are questioned about Epstein and they cannot back up what they say. Got a new one here. I already did debate Tracey in spaces and he lost badly. (find a link to that later) And I never disagreed with debating as I was never even asked. That guy doesn't think a 52 year having sex with a 14 year old is pedophilia. I really doesn't matter what you want to call it. Sex and sex acts with a minor is illegal. Prostitution is also illegal. Sex with girls 15 or younger unless you are within two years of their age is especially illegal. Epstein was 52 when he had sex with multiple 14 and 15 year olds. That should have been 30 years in jail for even one count. And second degree felonies for the 16 year olds and 17 year old. The argument is that simple it takes about 1 minute. As far as his network that takes more time but you have all seen me lay it out before each person has a different paper trail. The girls were told to tell Epstein that they were 18 by their recruiter so he would have plausible deniability. Let's not play stupid. That's like paying a pimp instead of paying a girl directly and saying well its not prostitution because you didn't give any money to her. You know they're in high school when that's where you had people looking for them. The other weasel move is to say well he only held a vibrator to a naked 14 year old's vagina, but that's not “sex”. Well guess what, that is still illegal. And carries 5 to 30 years in prison. Paying them makes the Lewd or Lascivious Battery prostitution which only adds time for that too. I am only giving you Florida law to keep it simple. Epstein should have been locked away in 2008 until 2038 minimal. However, I want Ian and Whitney to debate Tracey because they don't actually know these cases and they will lose. I'm not doing the work for them just so they can copy me again and then go on Tucker and Rogan while I get passed over again. I'm the one doing all the original work and the one being canceled defamed and losing money. They've never been canceled or de-banked from anything. Why do I have to take all the heat and do all the work and then also be the debate mercenary too? I'll step in when these grifters recognize the truth.Am I salty? Damn right I am, and why shouldn't I be? I had my life turned upside down! And then I just get passed over. They can pay me. I'm sick of being used by people. It's funny NOW people want to acknowledge who knows the most about this topic and who put it all together. Nah f**k that. I'm on team Tracey when it comes to exposing these grifters. I'm not going to win their battles for them so that they can benefit while I live hand to mouth. They can all kiss my Southern ass.Why am I the only one being censored? Because I'm the only one whose a threat to the system. They do not understand what this was. It is just a bunch of disconnected sloganeering. This is exactly why I rarely talk about JFK. I already explained RFK and 911 and got no recognition. They just girft off my finding and act like everyone knew it all along. But they didn't. How many times have you heard people say jack Ruby was named Jacob Rubenstein? That wasn't common knowledge at all. I might change my mind. But right now I'm like screw these clowns. I'm focused on the Iran war and my island sinking into the ocean. I'm tired of people taking all the benefit and recognition while I get all the heat. Where my million dollar payout? I cant even use a PayPal or coinbase. No YouTube no Venmo, or Vimeo, Instagram etc etc why is that? Why am I censored and they are not? Because I know what I'm talking about and can back it up. They just memorize the conclusions. I'm a threat to the system. Clowns are a limited hangout. If others are going to pretend to experts then let them do the debates and heavy lifting. Why am I only doing the work and not the reward?I'll come in at the end like final boss and destroy everyone. But I'm not rescuing these clowns until after they're exposed.People saying Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell were body swapped, that they ate babies or built a secret lab to farm human body parts in New Mexico, dissolved bones in sulfuric acid etc sound like Candace Owens trying to investigate Charlie Kirk. Ive dealt with the kook movement enough regarding 911. I don't have patience or energy for it any more. Nor the other side denying pedophilia or blaming Russia. I just want to wash my hands of it. Not forever but I need a break from all the stupid because it makes me ill. I'm going back to bear hunting and discussing the War of Northern aggression. I'm not going to try to shout over all the noise. I don't have time for that. going blind in one eye makes one realize how limited our time is and I am not going to waste the time i have left arguing with donkeys or rescuing donkeys. There is too much I want to SEE. Substack will still have Epstein news because its a paid service. But X can ride a fat one. By the way I got locked out of the new Facebook. It needs a phone number to verify logging in which I do not have as that page was created in 2009. You can no longer just make new pages either as they require photo ID to make a page now and I am banned as is my immediate family. I will try to find a work around.Wexner has to talk to congress tomorrow. Be sure to subscribe because I am only going to be addressing that to subs. I hate having to do that but that's the situation i am in. This is a public episode. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is facing a police investigation for leaking trade secrets to Jeffrey Epstein, being told by Britain's top prosecutor, “nobody is above the law.” Scandal cost him his royal status - but a white collar crime may yet cost him his freedom. And now pressure is continuing to build on the former prince to testify in the US. David Boies represented the late Virginia Giuffre in her civil case against Andrew; who reportedly paid 16 million dollars to avoid facing him. He joins Piers Morgan to discuss what he thinks should happen next - plus Piers also speaks to journalist Michael Tracey, former CIA whistleblower, John Kiriakou, executive director of the Foundation for Freedom Online and former State Department official, Mike Benz and broadcaster Tara Palmeri. While Noam is away, Dan Naturman and Periel Aschenbrand are joined by investigative journalist Michael Tracey to discuss the latest developments in the newly released Epstein files. Tracey asserts that the popular narrative of Jeffrey Epstein running a vast international sex trafficking ring—especially one involving “elite” clients—is not supported by credible evidence. He says that the factual record doesn't substantiate claims of a sprawling organized network. They discuss ulterior motives, questions about victims and what's fact and what's fiction. Tracey has contributed to a wide range of publications across the political spectrum, from The Nation to The American Conservative, the New York Daily News to the New York Post, and many more.

My guest on the show today is Ash Carter, writer and editor for Air Mail magazine and all around chronicler of the post-war cultural elite. I asked Ash to come on after reading the most recent in a series of profiles he's written about great editors of the 20th century, some of whom, for reasons we discuss, were semi-cancelled in the last decade or two. He's written about, for instance, former New Republic editor and owner Marty Peretz, Peretz's longtime literary editor Leon Wieseltier, Vintage Classics legend Gary Fisketjon, New York Review Classics visionary Edwin Frank, and Dick and Jeanette Seaver of Arcade Publishing. It's a fun conversation that hits on a few of my abiding concerns: the legacy of the WASP elite on our culture and politics, the ways in which we should think about people who do bad things but have made great things, and graphic design, which Ash cares about more than the average magazine editor.I lead off the episode by saying something, perhaps against my better judgement, about Jeffrey Epstein (or Jeff Epstein, as we started calling him in my family for some reason). Here's what I say. I am genuinely befuddled.I was listening to Jay Kang and Tyler Austin Harper's podcast, Time to Say Goodbye, and they weren't full conspiracy on Epstein, but I'd say 70% conspiracy. Here's Harper, for instance, on a recent episode:it does appear to be true that …. There is an international network of very powerful pedophiles that have a not inconsiderable amount of leverage on various halls of power. It shouldn't be lost. We've said this on the show before, but two out of the last four presidents were people who were very friendly with Epstein. But I think the real story here is that, yes, you have this hard kernel of like true blue elite pedophilesAnd then on the other side of things I was reading some posts by Michael Tracey and Matt Taibbi, and their perspective seems to be that Epstein was basically an immensely sleazy guy who paid for sex with young women and didn't look too closely at whether they were over or under 18 but didn't necessarily have a particular desire to have sex with underage women. Their paradigm is that a lot of this is Russiagate style hysteria/moral panic, fueled both by conspiracy theorists of all stripes and by various political and media actors who are cynically pumping up the story to drive clicks and gain electoral advantage,Claude AI comes in somewhere in the middle, telling me that “the evidence strongly supports that Epstein … Epstein deliberately and systematically sought out minors. The infrastructure he built—the recruitment network, the payments, the documentation—wasn't consistent with someone who simply preferred young-looking women and occasionally made mistakes. It was consistent with someone whose preference was specifically for adolescent girls.”It also says that when it comes to the question of other men being involved, it's murky: “The names that circulate publicly—Clinton, Trump, Dershowitz, various billionaires—appear in flight logs or visitor records, but presence at Epstein's properties doesn't establish participation in abuse. Epstein cultivated legitimacy by surrounding himself with prominent people, many of whom may have had no idea what else was happening.”I say all this not to offer my own two cents but just to articulate the opposite, which is that I have no clue. The evidence is too vast, and my time too limited, to feel as though I can have a direct interpretation of the evidence, and many of the people to whom I typically turn for a relatively sober account of reality, against conspiracy theory, or moderately conspiratorial. And then the people like Tracey and Taibbi complicate things too, because although their extreme skepticism of official narratives is so often distortionary, and therefore not a good guide to what's actually going on, in some cases it can provide a very useful signal for when we should be skeptical of official narratives,They were more right than wrong about Russiagate, or at least right about certain things that most people got wrong. So is this Russiagate all over again, and if so, what the hell does that mean, because as I ponder the comparison I realize I still don't even know what to make of Russiagate?I don't know. It was always the case that the gatekeepers were wrong about some big things, but it used to be the case that we just swallowed their narratives anyway, because we weren't exposed to alternatives. Now we're living in this fractured informational environment where we're so much more acutely aware of the fragility of the conventional narratives, and so much more exposed to alternatives, but our brains haven't gotten bigger in proportion in order to sift through the data more efficiently and effectively.I spend a lot of time thinking and reading about these things, and have a lot of faith in my capacity to perceive what's going on most of the time with some accuracy, but here I'm just adrift, and I wonder if in my adriftness I'm experiencing firsthand something like what most people who don't think, read, and write about this stuff as much as I do experience when confronting the political world, and what role this plays in pushing them into self contained bubbles or tribes that replicate, in a way, the single narrative cognitive environment we all had back in the days of the gatekeepers. So there's still a conventional narrative that we have to protect us from too much cognitive dizziness, it's just that there are many of them at once.Anyway, that's my two cents on Epstein. I'll keep trying to get a handle on it, but I won't have any guests on to talk about it because who needs another podcast about the Epstein files.Hope you enjoy my conversation with Ash.Peace. Joining me once again is Vanessa Beeley, here to follow up yesterday's interview with a more in-depth discussion on those issues as well the topics of censorship, Epstein, and the transgender movement. Overall, we focus on the rapidly encroaching globalist agenda, but without ignoring one of the most relevant, influential, and often omitted aspects of that discussion: Zionism. We also discuss the truth about ISIS and its US/Israeli connections, the way it is being used to destabilize and divide, and the weaponization of immigration alongside the demonization of Muslims at large. !function(r,u,m,b,l,e){r._Rumble=b,r[b]||(r[b]=function(){(r[b]._=r[b]._||[]).push(arguments);if(r[b]._.length==1){l=u.createElement(m),e=u.getElementsByTagName(m)[0],l.async=1,l.src="https://rumble.com/embedJS/u2q643"+(arguments[1].video?'.'+arguments[1].video:'')+"/?url="+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+"&args="+encodeURIComponent(JSON.stringify([].slice.apply(arguments))),e.parentNode.insertBefore(l,e)}})}(window, document, "script", "Rumble"); Rumble("play", {"video":"v714no6","div":"rumble_v714no6"}); Source Links: The Wall Will Fall | Where mainstream media fears to tread (1) Vanessa Beeley (@VanessaBeeley) / X Vanessa Beeley | Substack New Tab (1) Attorney General Pamela Bondi on X: "President Trump is leading the most transparent administration in American history. Journalist Michael Tracey joins The Winston Marshall Show for an uncompromising deep-dive into the murky world of Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and the web of conspiracies surrounding their crimes.Tracey separates fact from fiction — breaking down Epstein's 2008 plea deal, the failures of federal prosecutors, and the dubious credibility of key accusers like Virginia Giuffre. He exposes how much of the “Epstein mythology” has been built on shaky claims, media sensationalism, and opportunistic lawyers, while real questions remain about Epstein's finances, intelligence links, and the powerful figures in his orbit. They discuss Prince Andrew, Alan Dershowitz, the infamous “Little Black Book,” and the Miami Herald investigation that reignited the scandal. Tracey also examines the suspicious circumstances of Giuffre's recent death, her fortune from settlements, and the ongoing disputes over her estate. All this — Epstein's crimes, Maxwell's role, the credibility crisis of accusers, media distortion, and the conspiracies that refuse to die…-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To see more exclusive content and interviews consider subscribing to my substack here: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Substack: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/X: https://twitter.com/mrwinmarshallInsta: https://www.instagram.com/winstonmarshallLinktree: https://linktr.ee/winstonmarshall----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chapters 00:00 Michael Tracy's Role and Epstein's Legal Plea04:51 Government Designated Victims and Legal Challenges09:17 Prince Andrew and Virginia Roberts Giuffre's Claims 10:13 The Credibility of Virginia Roberts Giuffre18:15 Media, Interviews, and Public Perception21:02 Giuffre's Death and Financial Settlements 26:47 The Questions Around Giuffre's Death 29:39 Epstein's Crimes and Victim Testimonies39:21 The “Little Black Book” and Its Impact 44:50 Epstein's Death and Conspiracy Theories46:00 Epstein's Property Portfolio and Associations46:21 Steve Bannon and Epstein's Interviews1:00:45 Epstein's Business Activities and Ghislaine Maxwell's Testimony1:11:08 Epstein's Financial Dealings and Clientele1:18:24 Trump's Relationship with Epstein and Media Coverage1:21:54 Epstein's Wealth and Assets1:24:18 Epstein's International Business and Multiple Passports1:38:13 Media Coverage and Public Perception Hosted on Acast. A journo in the old-fashioned “stick-poking” mode, Michael started debating Sarah on his own introduction before she was half-way through. Fair enough! We go on to discuss Charlie Kirk — whom Tracey sees as a “mouthpiece” for the administration — and then go deep on the Epstein Files, which Tracey tore into, in part, because no one else was. You might be surprised at the gap between the wild fantasy spun online and the facts on the ground. We disagree on a lot (who doesn't?), but Tracey has done some of the most honest journalism on Epstein — a case everyone talks about, and few people know. He's also stood up for free speech, something that's getting crushed as the right discovers their own powers of cancel culture. Also discussed:* Wikipedia suuuucks* Why Michael thinks Kirk is not a martyr* Pro tip: Don't bring up that Ann Coulter story from Michael's college years in your intro … * Charlie Kirk the podcaster vs. Charlie Kirk the campus debater* OK, well since the Ann Coulter story was already brought up, here it is …* What happens when your ACLU lawyer is drunk* The Jewish mafia of Ohio* Epstein Survivors, Inc.* The accusers in the Epstein saga are … complicated* Was Epstein murdered in prison? We're heading into another potential government shutdown, and the maneuvering is already underway. Schumer is strategizing with his caucus on how to handle the September 30 deadline. It's a familiar script: Democrats want Republicans to commit to avoiding additional rescissions and to agree on the broader budget process before Democrats give their votes. The ask isn't outrageous — a few basic guarantees in exchange for the seven Democratic votes Republicans would need to hit the 60-vote threshold in the Senate. The tension, of course, is baked in. Some Democrats want to force a shutdown, not avoid one. They think it's time to show their base that they'll stand up to Trump and his agenda. But Schumer doesn't want to lose the optics war. If Democrats are the ones who initiate a shutdown, he knows they'll never be able to claim the high road again when Republicans try the same play. That framing matters — especially in an election year.Meanwhile, Republicans are eager to push another round of budget cuts. They already passed an $8 billion rescissions package and want more. That's what Schumer is trying to block, while also keeping his own party from turning a funding debate into a loyalty test. It's a messy balancing act, and the countdown has already started.Public Media Hits a WallEdith Chapin stepping down from NPR is getting attention, but the real story is the billion-dollar rescission Congress just passed — a cut directly targeting the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. That's the pot of money that gets divided among outlets like NPR and PBS. Chapin insists her departure isn't related, and maybe that's true. Thirteen years is a long run. Still, the timing speaks volumes. For years, public media has downplayed its reliance on federal dollars. They'd argue they only receive about 1% of their funding from the government, so budget cuts shouldn't matter. But now that Congress has actually slashed that funding, the narrative changes. If they're not publicly funded in any meaningful way, how do they survive? And if they are, then why haven't they done a better job of building public goodwill to protect that funding?I don't think the model holds up much longer. If you rely on taxpayer money, you have to make your case — constantly. You have to give people something they can see, something they can repeat. You can't just be vague and institutional and assume the funding will continue. It's not the '90s anymore. The party's ending, and there's a new bartender who's ready to close the tab.UNESCO and the American PullbackAnd then there's UNESCO. Trump is pulling the U.S. out of the UN's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization — again. It's a reversal of a reversal from his first term. He says it's too “woke,” too biased, too ineffective. Whatever the justification, it fits a larger pattern: the U.S. retreating from its role as primary funder of global institutions. There's always a debate about whether this kind of move opens the door for China to step in and fill the void. That argument has merit. But I'll say to UNESCO what I said to public media: if you depend on the American public — directly or indirectly — for your funding and relevance, then you have to win public support. You have to tell your story well, and often. You have to make people care. Some of these global organizations got comfortable. They assumed the checks would keep coming, and the U.S. would always foot the bill. But now they're running out of room. The music's fading. And if they can't answer why they matter in plain language, they'll find themselves cut off without much fanfare.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:01:25 - Justin's BART Experience00:08:52 - Interview with Michael Tracey00:39:40 - Update00:40:17 - Gov't Shutdown?00:43:32 - NPR00:45:09 - UNESCO00:47:35 - Interview with Michael Tracey, con't01:18:40 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Freddie Sayers, UnHerd's Editor-in-Chief, interviews journalist Michael Tracey to unpack the recent Jeffrey Epstein files news, and the use and proliferation of conspiracy theories. The Trump administration's hyped-up promise of explosive Epstein revelations, including a “client list,” has fallen flat. The Department of Justice and FBI now confirm there is now list and Epstein's death was indeed suicide, pushing back against years of wild speculation. Michael examines whether Trump, JD Vance, Pam Bondi, Kash Patel, and Dan Bongino, naively, or cynically, fuelled Epstein conspiracy theories – namely, that “Epstein didn't kill himself”, and more – to rally their base, only to now face flak for either hiding the truth or admitting there was nothing to reveal.Freddie and Michael draw parallels with the JFK files, where declassification also disappointed, offering little new insight. Touching on Israel, UFOs, the military industrial complex, they explore how Trump's administration has leaned into conspiracies for political gain and now faces the fallout when the “truth” underwhelms. The ongoing confirmation hearings for RFK Jr., Kash Patel, and Tulsi Gabbard have been largely predictable. But as always, the real story isn't the grandstanding—it's in the quiet calculations happening behind the scenes. This was RFK Jr.'s second day facing the Senate, and the discussion largely revolved around his past statements on vaccines. But if you're looking for movement in the room, there wasn't much. Coverage focused on explosive exchanges between Democrats and the nominees, but that's irrelevant. The Democrats can all vote no, and it won't change a thing. What matters is what Republicans are saying—and there's little indication that they are going to vote against RFK Jr.RFK Jr. remains politically resilient for two reasons:* The Kennedy name still holds value with a broad swath of Americans.* His skepticism of Big Pharma and Big Agriculture resonates with a coalition that includes both libertarians and "crunchy moms"The main Republican angle of attack was always going to be abortion. RFK Jr. has been pro-choice his entire life, but now he's taking orders from a pro-life president. How does that play out? He faced questions about the abortion pill but gave answers that were lukewarm at best.My assumption: He's moving forward.Kash Patel's hearing was predictably contentious, with heated exchanges involving Adam Schiff and Amy Klobuchar. But, again, those don't matter. He also had solid support from Republican lawmakers, which means his confirmation is essentially a done deal.If Matt Gaetz was a non-starter because of his long list of enemies, Patel should have had similar problems—he's burned plenty of bridges. The difference? Patel has a history in law enforcement, whereas Gaetz does not. That seems to be enough to push him through. This is where things get interesting. Unlike RFK Jr., Tulsi Gabbard doesn't have the built-in advantage of a famous name. Unlike Patel, she lacks a Republican establishment safety net. And unlike both of them, she has a real opposition force: the intelligence community.Tulsi has been one of the most vocal critics of the intelligence agencies, particularly regarding FISA Section 702, which she argues enables domestic surveillance. She's also expressed support for Edward Snowden—a major red flag for the very institutions she'd be overseeing as Director of National Intelligence. Her hearing featured a bipartisan focus on one specific issue: Would she call Snowden a traitor? She wouldn't.She acknowledged that Snowden broke the law, that there were other ways he could have exposed government overreach. But she refused to use the word “traitor.” And that, oddly enough, might be the line that sinks her.It speaks to a deeper issue of symbolic politics. It wasn't enough to condemn Snowden's actions—she needed to emotionally brand him as a traitor. Her refusal to do so is revealing because it suggests that there are Republicans who may see her as too much of a risk to intelligence operations.Looking at prediction markets like Polymarket:* Kash Patel is sitting comfortably at 95%.* RFK Jr. has dipped slightly from 78% to 75%, but still strong.* Tulsi Gabbard is now underwater at 44%.That's not a good place to be.Gabbard's nomination has created one of the strangest coalitions in modern politics—hardcore MAGA figures lining up alongside Tom Cotton and Meghan McCain. But if Trump's team is going to throw its weight behind any nominee, it'll likely be her. The next 72 hours will tell us if she has the votes or if this is where the process stalls. Not a ton of surprises overall, but one question remains: Will the Trump administration go all in on Tulsi? We'll see.In this episode we also have a great chat with Michael Tracey who makes his Px3 debut. I wanted to talk to him about current events but we wound up spending the whole hour rehashing the 2024 campaign.
