Mitch Canham is the head baseball coach for the Oregon State. In 2021, he led the Beavers to 37-24 record and reached the NCAA Regionals.  As a player, Canham was a member of the back-to-back College World Series championship teams with Oregon State in 2006 and 2007. He was selected with the 57th overall pick in the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft by the San Diego Padres and played 9 seasons of minor league baseball reaching as high as Triple-A.  Canham has also overcome multiple moments of tragedy losing his mom to a drug overdose as a freshman in college and a few years later in 2008, losing his brother Dustin, who was killed while serving in the U.S. Marine Corp.  Today on the podcast, we talk to Mitch about coaching at his alma mater, coming to faith in Jesus and trusting in God amidst tragedy.  --- Looking for a great gift idea? Kristin Wodrich is the women's head basketball coach for the University of Indianapolis. After earning her first head coaching position in the spring of 2016, Wodrich guided the Greyhounds to a seven-win improvement in 2016-17. winning 17 games and  culminating in an appearance in the GLVC Tournament semifinals.  Wodrich and the Greyhounds had one of their best seasons yet in 2019-20, earning a 19-10 overall record and the sixth seed in the GLVC Tournament. The record marked the highest win total during Wodrich's tenure, including their 12-8 record within the conference.  As a player at UMBC, Wodrich was a four-year letter winner for University of Maryland Baltimore County from 2004-2008 and helped guide the team to the 2007 America East championship and a spot in the NCAA Division I Tournament. She was named to the America East All-Conference Third Team as a senior in 2008 after averaging 11.4 points per game. She graduated in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies with a focus in broadcast communications and exercise physiology. --- Looking for a great gift idea? Terry Evans is the team chaplain for the Atlanta Braves. He also serves with UPI, Unlimited Potential Inc, with a desire to teach and equip baseball players to grow deeper in their walk with Jesus Christ.  Before becoming a chaplain, Terry was a pro baseball player. He was selected in the 47th round of the 2001 MLB Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals and six years later, would make his MLB debut with the Los Angeles Angels in June of 2007. Damien Woody is a two-time Super Bowl champion who played 12 seasons with the Patriots, Lions and Jets. He was selected 17th overall by the New England Patriots in the 1999 NFL Draft and played five seasons with the Pats, four with the Lions and three with the Jets. Tim Elko is a member of the Ole Miss baseball team and the SEC's reigning Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In 2021, he was a preseason All-American and team captain, but suffered a torn ACL in April. Incredibly, he returned a month later and was a pivotal member of the Ole Miss baseball team's postseason run. In last season's NCAA Oxford Regional, Elko hit a grand slam in the opening game against Southeast Missouri, then had two home runs and led his team to a victory in the finale against Southern Mississippi a few days later. Ole Miss was eliminated by Arizona in the Super Regionals. When Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their gloved hands at the 1968 Olympics, they did so knowing that they would pay an enormous price. 50 years later, when basketball superstars LeBron James and Kevin Durant talked about politics, a conservative media personality admonished them to “shut up and dribble.” Colin Kaepernick's quiet protest against police misconduct in 2016 cost him his career. As John Feinstein chronicles in his new book, there are many, many more athletes, coaches and front office personnel in professional sports whose trailblazing activism happened behind the scenes. Feinstein explores the racial dynamics of sports at the highest level, and finds that when it comes to equity for people of color, sports reflects what we know to be true in other businesses: we have a long way to go. Andre Wadsworth was selected third overall in the 1998 NFL Draft after a stellar college career at Florida State. During his college career with the Seminoles, Wadsworth was named to the First or Second-Team All ACC all four years. In 1997, he finished his season with 16 sacks and was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Regarded as the top prospect in the 1998 NFL Draft, Wadsworth was selected third to the Arizona Cardinals behind Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf. His rookie year, he helped the Cardinals reach the second round of the playoffs. Injuries would take a toll on Wadsworth, who has had multiple knee surgeries that ultimately would end his career in 2007. Currently, he is the Senior Executive Pastor and founder of IMPACT CHURCH in Scottsdale, Arizona. Samantha Ricketts is the head softball coach at Mississippi State. She was named to her current position in July 2019 after coaching stops at Wichita State and as an assistant at Mississippi State. In her first season, she became the fastest head coach in program history to reach 20 wins, doing so in 23 games and is the only coach in program history to have her team nationally ranked at some point during her first year. Prior to coaching, she played softball at Oklahoma University under head coach Patty Gasso. During her time with the Sooners, she was a two time All-American and team captain. Anita Howard is the head coach of Georgia Southern's Women's basketball team. She is the first African American female head coach at Georgia Southern and was named to her current position back in April of 2019. Prior to that, she spent three years at Columbus State University where she led her squad to the Elite Eight and two NCAA Division II championship appearances. In college, Howard was a standout basketball player with Fort Valley State, earning SIAC Defensive Player of the Year honors all three seasons. She transferred to Armstrong State for the 2002-03 season and led the club to their first ever NCAA championship appearance. Trenten Merrill is a member of Team USA's Paralympic team who won Bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games and also represented the U.S. at the 2016 Summer Paralympics as well. In March of 2005, Trenten had his right foot amputated after a dirt bike accident with a friend.  Trenten is currently a public speaker who uses his Paralympic experience to help inspire others to pursue their dreams and goals.
