For centuries, gold has been a medium of exchange and treated as the most valuable asset all over the world. It has traditionally served multiple purposes like being used as a gift or traded as a commodity asset. The value of yellow metal has risen consistently for many decades now. Bitcoin, on the other hand, has witnessed a meteoric rise, breaching new records and scaling all-time highs. More investors and crypto enthusiasts are now comparing the two to assess the value they bring.Historically, gold has been considered a safe-haven asset. During a financial crisis or recession, the yellow metal has been often used as a hedge against stock market volatility. Bitcoin, meanwhile, has been dubbed “digital gold” in the past and it's a fair comparison with gold as they share similar characteristics. While Bitcoin may not be a safe-haven asset yet, it has the potential to become one, since it is expected to increase in value and retain it during times of economic turbulence owing to its uncorrelated status. In a study conducted by Fidelity Digital Assets, it was noted that eight in 10 investors surveyed felt digital assets (cryptocurrency, tokens, Bitcoin ETF, etc) have a place in their portfolio. In both the US and Europe, exposure to digital assets has increased year over year. Almost nine ..Etienne Goffin - Senior economist from Brussels, Belgium. Algorithmic decentralization is an ideology that finds its origin in the cypherpunk movement, which championed cryptography as the only tool to ensure people's freedom on the Internet. This techno-utopianism promotes decentralization as a tool for the elimination of hierarchies and the dissolution of power. Blockchain technologies, and therefore cryptocurrencies, are born on the wake of these expectations and they embrace a political spectrum that goes from extreme leftists to right wing cyber-libertarians. However, now that traditional finance, big corporations and even centralized institutions are more and more conquering the crypto-space, the utopia of decentralization has shifted from currencies towards a new tool, the DAOs.Decentralized Autonomous Organizations are internet-native organizations collectively owned and managed by their members. According to DeFilippi and Wright's "a DAO is a particular kind of decentralized organization that is neither run nor controlled by any person but entirely by code. As opposed to other decentralized organizations --- which are operated by individuals who hold the ultimate decision-making power  --- DAOs are designed to run autonomously on a blockchain." (1) The authors call the set of rules accepted by the community lex cryptographica, an order created without and the law through the underlying protocol of a blockchain-based network.Read the full article: https://osom.finance/blog/daos-culture-and-politics Camilla Carabini - Economic anthropologist interested in money, finance, and cooperatives. Play Episode Listen Later Dec 31, 2021 23:38

The concept of blockchains technology is set to revolutionise not just the finance or healthcare industry but many aspects of business, government and even our personal lives. The problem is that there is so much hype and misunderstanding out there, which made me take a step back and explain the basics of what blockchains are and how they work – in a very simple way, that hopefully anyone can understand, even with no prior technical knowledge necessary. At its most basic, a blockchain is a computer file used for storing data – information. Like any computer file (including the document you are reading now) it exists on a digital storage medium, such as a computer hard drive. And it takes the form of a string of binary “bits”, ones and zeros, which can be processed by computers to be made readable by humans.Blockchains, however, have three properties which, while not unique individually, when put together mean they function very differently than other types of computer files. The first is that they are distributed. The file containing this article can, in theory, simply be stored on one computer and accessed over the internet by however many people want to use (i.e read) it. A blockchain, on the other hand, is duplicated, in its entirety, across many computers.Listen to this episode to find out more about the history of crypto.Sign up to OSOM.Finance here.

#6 Could a digital Euro benefit Bitcoin - with Etienne Goffin

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 26, 2021 17:00

ECB President Christine Lagarde positioned the digital euro as an alternative to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Below we expose what's in it for you, and for crypto.A couple of months ago the European Central Bank (ECB) announced that a proposed digital euro will be tested over the next two years. By stating that this “aims to ensure that in the digital age, citizens and firms continue to have access to the safest form of money, central bank money,” ECB President Christine Lagarde positioned the digital euro as an alternative to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. The attractiveness of these private peer-to-peer initiatives of “stateless” money will be influenced by the new Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The two forms of money, which can simultaneously compete and complement one another, will always be interrelated. But first, a note on digitization versus digitalization: while digitization is the act of getting material into zeros and ones, digitalization is about creating native digital assets. So, whereas an e-book is a digitized book, Wikipedia is a digitalized (or digital) encyclopedia. The process by which Wikipedia came to be is unfathomable in a physical world. If you had to reprint Wikipedia every time someone made an edit, you would very quickly run out of paper.Although people may think of money as already being fully digital, it is merely electronic. Digitized, not digitalized. Crypto is digital by design. For legal tender, the digitalization is more complex. Commercial banks can already turn your banknotes and coins into dematerialized euros when they are deposited in your bank account. Furthermore, wire transfer and bankcard systems are popular tools to carry transactions with these digitized forms of money. In fact, most of the money issued by central banks has already been digitized for decades. But those are not digital assets, they are merely old assets that have been transformed into zeros and ones.Etienne Goffin - Senior economist from Brussels, Belgium. He has a 10+ year career in the financial sector both within the public sector (Central Bank of Malta) where he was an innovation consultant and economic advisor as well as the private sector where he has worked as a banking consultant (Needle Strategy) with expertise in corporate financing, monetary policy, and business innovation. Play Episode Listen Later Nov 19, 2021 22:16

A look at the elusive search for homo-oeconomicus and the genuine gift of Shiba Inu by Buterin.Mainstream economics considers us all rational human beings, i.e. homo oeconomicus, driven by the maximization of utility. Transnational capitalism is based on the dogma of capital accumulation: entrepreneurs must increase profits to invest more and keep growing. Since the beginning of the XXth century, anthropologists have criticized the concept of homo oeconomicus, demonstrating that it is a historically contingent and culturally produced phenomenon and not a "natural" human attitude as classical economics claims. In many cultures, people act not for the mere seeking of self-interest or profit, but they are driven by other emotions that are socially constructed. In Western societies too, sociologists have been claiming that homo-oeconomicus is a pure product of our culture: Max Weber, for example, perceived the protestant ethics as the spirit of capitalism. More recently two Nobel Prizes in Economics have been awarded to scientists who proved that humans are anything but rational (Daniel Kahnemman, 2002; Richard Thaler, 2017). Homo-oeconomicus seems to be as elusive a species as the sasquatch. We recently witnessed something that recalls a potlatch in the world of cryptocurrencies. In May 2021, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin set fire to 6.7 billion U.S. Dollars, in the form of Shiba Inu meme coins that were sent to his wallet without his consent. Within a few minutes, this massive wealth ended up in an address of many zeros and disappeared. It was not used to invest in a new business or kept for future use. It was simply burned. Wasted. Dépensé.
