The Mint Condition: NFT and Digital Collectibles Entertainment

In today's episode of Mid Mic Daily Bite, the AI-generated hosts Bunchu and Chamber delve into the innovative proposals by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin to enhance the speed and efficiency of Community Notes on the social media platform X. Speaking at Korea Blockchain Week 2024, Buterin highlighted the slow response time of Community Notes as a significant issue, noting that delays could lead to misinformation spreading before corrective annotations appear.Buterin suggests leveraging AI and prediction market technologies to accelerate this process. Prediction markets, where users can bet on specific outcomes, could be integrated with AI to quickly assess whether a post warrants a community note. This setup would allow for real-time, cost-effective solutions to judge the relevance and necessity of annotations on posts, potentially reducing the time it takes for helpful notes to appear publicly. The hosts explore how this approach not only speeds up the moderation process but also incentivizes participation through a reward system for accurate predictions. They discuss the broader implications of integrating such technologies on social platforms, considering both the potential benefits in combating misinformation and the challenges of ensuring accuracy and fairness in automated systems.Tune in to this segment of Mid Mic Daily Bite for an insightful discussion on how AI and prediction markets could revolutionize social media interactions and truth verification, as proposed by one of the leading minds in the blockchain space.Source: https://cointelegraph.com/news/vitalik-buterin-ai-prediction-markets-x-community-notesFollow Us:Website: https://midmiccrisis.com/  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@midmiccrisisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/midmiccrisis/?hl=enTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mid.mic.crisis?lang=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/MidMicCrisisPowered by @dGenNetworkWebsite: https://dgen.network/Support the show

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Fear of centralized power vs. fear of misaligned AGI: Vitalik Buterin on 80,000 Hours, published by Seth Herd on August 5, 2024 on LessWrong. Vitalik Buterin wrote an impactful blog post, My techno-optimism. I found this discussion of one aspect on 80,00 hours much more interesting. The remainder of that interview is nicely covered in the host's EA Forum post. My techno optimism apparently appealed to both sides, e/acc and doomers. Buterin's approach to bridging that polarization was interesting. I hadn't understood before the extent to which anti-AI regulation sentiment is driven by fear of centralized power. I hadn't thought about this risk before since it didn't seem relevant to AGI risk, but I've been updating to think it's highly relevant. [this is automated transcription that's inaccurate and comically accurate by turns :)] Rob Wiblin (the host) (starting at 20:49): what is it about the way that you put the reasons to worry that that ensured that kind of everyone could get behind it Vitalik Buterin: [...] in addition to taking you know the case that AI is going to kill everyone seriously I the other thing that I do is I take the case that you know AI is going to take create a totalitarian World Government seriously [...] [...] then it's just going to go and kill everyone but on the other hand if you like take some of these uh you know like very naive default solutions to just say like hey you know let's create a powerful org and let's like put all the power into the org then yeah you know you are creating the most like most powerful big brother from which There Is No Escape and which has you know control over the Earth and and the expanding light cone and you can't get out right and yeah I mean this is something that like uh I think a lot of people find very deeply scary I mean I find it deeply scary um it's uh it is also something that I think realistically AI accelerates right One simple takeaway is that recognizing and addressing that motivation for anti-regulation and pro-AGI sentiment when trying to work with or around the e/acc movement. But a second is whether to take that fear seriously. Is centralized power controlling AI/AGI/ASI a real risk? Vitalik Buterin is from Russia, where centralized power has been terrifying. This has been the case for roughly half of the world. Those that are concerned with of risks of centralized power (including Western libertarians) are worried that AI increases that risk if it's centralized. This puts them in conflict with x-risk worriers on regulation and other issues. I used to hold both of these beliefs, which allowed me to dismiss those fears: 1. AGI/ASI will be much more dangerous than tool AI, and it won't be controlled by humans 2. Centralized power is pretty safe (I'm from the West like most alignment thinkers). Now I think both of these are highly questionable. I've thought in the past that fears AI are largely unfounded. The much larger risk is AGI. And that is an even larger risk if it's decentralized/proliferated. But I've been progressively more convinced that Governments will take control of AGI before it's ASI, right?. They don't need to build it, just show up and inform the creators that as a matter of national security, they'll be making the key decisions about how it's used and aligned.[1] If you don't trust Sam Altman to run the future, you probably don't like the prospect of Putin or Xi Jinping as world-dictator-for-eternal-life. It's hard to guess how many world leaders are sociopathic enough to have a negative empathy-sadism sum, but power does seem to select for sociopathy. I've thought that humans won't control ASI, because it's value alignment or bust. There's a common intuition that an AGI, being capable of autonomy, will have its own goals, for good or ill. I think it's perfectly coherent for it...

One could argue that psychedelic research has experienced a similar journey as crypto, in the sense that decentralised communities bound together to fund research where centralised entities refuse to do so. One of the greatest hurdles in modern science is access to research funding, and DeSci aims to provide a solution through decentralised crowdfunding. In addition, IP rights are incontestably attributed with the help of blockchain technology, as they cannot be altered at a later date. However, as the human mind is unique and moulded by each individual's life story, establishing a causal relationship between consumption and their beneficial or detrimental effects can be extremely biased. We were joined by Dima Buterin & Paul Kohlhaas, to discuss the vast subject of psychedelics (especially in relationship to trauma), how research has progressed and how decentralisation pushes the field forward (DeSci).Topics covered in this episode:Dima's & Paul's backgroundsDiscovering psychedelicsDealing with traumaPsychedelics throughout history and societiesHow Molecule DAO was foundedDeSci & on-chain IPEthereum early days, causality & rationalityPsyDAONetwork statesMiscEpisode links:Dima Buterin on TwitterPaul Kohlhaas on TwitterMolecule DAO on TwitterPsy DAO on TwitterSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.theflyingfrisby.comTwo bullish developments for Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies this week: first, Donald Trump, who is currently the favourite to be the next US President, declared, 'I am very positive and open-minded towards cryptocurrency companies and all things related to this new and burgeoning industry. Our country must be the leader in the field; there is no second place.'Those words will have been written for him, but they nevertheless show that policies, should he win the election, as currently looks likely, will be favourable. That has to be good for the sector.Second the Ethereum ETF got green lit this week in the US, so today we consider the implications of that, and give our outlook on the sector more generally.First up, ether has rallied. It's risen by about a third from $2,900 a coin to within spitting distance of $4,000.I must confess to being somewhat flummoxed by Ethereum. (If you want to read my guide, it is here). Briefly: its founding principle is to use blockchain technology for purposes beyond an alternative system of digital money. Known as "the world's programmable blockchain," it can be used to “codify, decentralize, secure, and trade just about anything.” Charlie Morris of Byte Tree likens it to a decentralized App Store (you should all read his letter by the way). Developers can use the platform to build and publish smart contracts and distributed applications (dApps), and it is a kind of marketplace for financial services (DeFi), NFTs (non-fungible tokens), games, and apps, all of which can be paid for in ether. The Bitcoin maximalists don't like it. Ethereum is not properly decentralized. The numerous forks that have taken place in reaction to hacks prove this—they would not be possible with a properly decentralised platform. Too many coins were pre-mined and handed out to founders. Ethereum 2.0 met with delay after delay. Transaction costs, known as gas fees, can get exorbitant. Its blockchain is not that robust. In short, it's something of a ticking time bomb.Well, maybe. But its founder, Vitalik Buterin, a billionaire many times over by the time he was 28 (just in case you weren't feeling inadequate enough already this morning), will know all this. He is a genius, and I satisfy myself that by owning Ethereum, I am effectively long Buterin—not unlike being long Elon Musk by owning Tesla.Ethereum also has numerous competitors—not least Solana, but also Binance Smart Chain, Polkadot, Cardano, Terra, and Fantom - which may or may not be a good thing. Many of these are technologically superior, say critics—faster, more robust.Price-wise ethereum been something of a laggard. Its all-time high was $4,800 and it's about a thousand bucks, or 20%, below that. That said, it does tend to move later in bull markets - and by more. But despite all of this, Ethereum remains by some margin the number two cryptocurrency by market cap—at $465 billion—followed by Tether, which has another purpose altogether ($110 bn), then Binance Coin ($89 bn). By way of comparison, HSBC has a market cap of $165 bn. And you thought crypto was a passing fad.So what can we expect with the launch of this new ETF?

Known as the "Godfather of Ethereum" and the founder of Aeternity, Yani shares his journey in the world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies.   Yani Malahov's introduction to the blockchain space began in 2013 when he hired Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, for a crypto coin wallet project. During this period, Malahov and Buterin discussed the potential of blockchain technology and the concept of smart contracts, which eventually led to the creation of Ethereum.   Malahov interest in bitcoin and blockchain stemmed from his belief that technology would profoundly change society, governance, and human interaction.   Discussing the potential and the future of blockchain technology, Malahov believes it is not too late for people to get involved in this field. He foresees blockchain technology being integral to future governance systems and essential for securing autonomous technologies like self-driving cars.   Regarding entrepreneurship and blockchain, Malahov highlights that blockchain is a platform for decentralized applications, like Aeternity and Ethereum, and emphasizes its utility in creating programmable money, oracles, and smart contracts. He also discusses the importance of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) in shifting focus from individuals to groups or organizations.   Malahov, born in Bulgaria during communism, has devoted his career to open-source software, believing in the free flow of information and ideas. He is currently working on Aeternity, a smart contract platform, and focuses on creating solutions for free and borderless transactions.   Towards the end of the conversation, Malahov discusses the importance of rewarding individuals for their contributions and innovations, suggesting a shift from a patent-focused model to one where creators are compensated through transaction fees or other mechanisms in a free information market.   In summary, the podcast episode with Yani Malahov offers insightful perspectives on the early days of blockchain, the evolution of cryptocurrencies, and the future of decentralized technology, emphasizing the impact and potential of blockchain in various aspects of society and governance.

In this week's episode, Anna (https://twitter.com/annarrose) and Nico (https://twitter.com/nico_mnbl) interview Or Sattath (https://twitter.com/or_sattath), Assistant Professor at the Ben-Gurion (https://cris.bgu.ac.il/en/persons/or-sattath) University in the Computer Science department. This is the 2nd episode with Or on this show, continuing the conversation around Quantum Cryptography. This time, he describes how we can transition from a pre-quantum to a post-quantum environment, looking at existing systems like Bitcoin and Ethereum. He covers why the methods used in the transition will be important, techniques on how this could be executed and the challenges in designing these techniques and the complications that can arise. Finally, they go on to discuss Quantum Money and recent works in this area. Here's some additional links for this episode: Part 1 - Episode 288: Quantum Cryptography with Or Sattath (https://zeroknowledge.fm/288-2/) Polynomial-Time Algorithms for Prime Factorization and Discrete Logarithms on a Quantum Computer by Shor (https://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/9508027) Shor's Algorithm (https://quantum-computing.ibm.com/composer/docs/iqx/guide/shors-algorithm) Grover's Algorithm (https://quantum-computing.ibm.com/composer/docs/iqx/guide/grovers-algorithm) A fast quantum mechanical algorithm for database search by Grover (https://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/9605043) Fawkescoin: A cryptocurrency without public-key cryptography by Bonneau and Miller (https://jbonneau.com/doc/BM14-SPW-fawkescoin.pdf) Bitcoin is not quantum-safe, and how we can fix it when needed by Buterin (https://bitcoinmagazine.com/technical/bitcoin-is-not-quantum-safe-and-how-we-can-fix-1375242150) Cryptographic canaries and backups by Justin Drake (https://ethresear.ch/t/cryptographic-canaries-and-backups/1235) Notes and recommended links by Or Sattath: NIST post-quantum standardization (https://csrc.nist.gov/Projects/post-quantum-cryptography) for post-quantum digital signatures and public-key encryption (or, more precisely, Key Encapsulation Mechanism, KEM). These are classical schemes that, unlike almost all the existing schemes that are used in practice, are secure against quantum adversaries. Signature Lifting (arXiv link) (https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.06754) is discussed as a technique to migrate to post-quantum signatures, especially for those who didn't prepare in advance. Here's a recommended Twitter thread (https://twitter.com/DesheShai/status/1635599973269098499) summarizing the results by Shai Wyborski, Or's co-author. An approach to upgrade Bitcoin to quantum money is available here (https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.11998). This uses a cryptographic primitive which is called quantum lightning, which was introduced here (https://eprint.iacr.org/2017/1080.pdf). Some smart contacts capabilities can be supported (https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.12806) as well. This construction is based on one-shot signatures (https://eprint.iacr.org/2020/107), which isdiscussed in some detail during the interview. The bottom line of this work is that we can have the most important utility that Bitcoin provides, without the need for a blockchain, or any other consensus mechanism. Uncloneable cryptography (https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.14265) was discussed during the interview. Quantum encryption with certified deletion (https://arxiv.org/abs/1910.03551) was discussed as an interesting example of a property that can be achieved only in quantum cryptography. When most people hear “crypto,” the first thing they think of is “currencies.” Cryptocurrencies have skyrocketed in popularity over the past few years. And they've given rise to an entire ecosystem of financial speculation, get rich quick schemes, and in some cases outright fraud. But there's another side of crypto that gets less attention: the segment of the community that is interested in the way the technology that powers crypto can decentralize decision making, make institutions more transparent and transform the way organizations are governed. That's the side I find far more interesting. There are few individuals as central to that latter segment of crypto as Vitalik Buterin. When he was still just a teenager, Buterin co-founded Ethereum, a decentralized platform whose token Ether is the second most valuable cryptocurrency today, surpassed only by Bitcoin. But the vision behind Ethereum was that the blockchain technology could be used for more than digital money; it could create a sort of digital infrastructure on top of which organizations and companies and applications could be built — ostensibly free of centralizing structures like banks and governments.Over the last decade, Buterin has become arguably the core public intellectual on the nonfinancial side of crypto. His new book, “Proof of Stake,” is a collection of long, thoughtful essays that taken together lay out a vision of crypto as a truly transformative technology — one with the potential to revolutionize everything from city governance to voting systems to online identity.I myself have dueling impulses about Buterin's vision. On the one hand, I believe many of our governing systems and institutions are badly in need of the kind of reimagining he is engaged in. On the other hand, I'm deeply skeptical of whether the issues Buterin and his ilk are focused on are actually technological problems that blockchains can solve. So this is a conversation that sits squarely within that tension.Mentioned:Seeing Like a State by James C. ScottBook recommendations:The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Ethereum (ETH) creator Vitalik Buterin has an idea for what the state of Bitcoin (BTC) will look like twenty years from now. In a new interview with economist Noah Smith, Buterin says that in the medium term, he thinks crypto assets including Bitcoin and Ethereum will become about as volatile as gold or the stock market, moving away from the big bubble and crash phases of the past. The cryptocurrency visionary also says that even though crypto could satisfy a few key narratives in the next two decades, mainstream adoption is going to be the biggest factor in determining the fate of digital assets. He moved his family to Toronto, where he raised a son, Vitalik Buterin, who would later drop out of college to co-found the Ethereum platform. And that's only the short version of the story. Dmitry, who himself founded and built three multimillion dollar businesses, played a significant role in introducing Vitalik to bitcoin early on. Fast forward years later, all of those achievements would not matter as Dmitry is tagged a traitor by his people for not supporting the Ukraine-Russia war. He's undeterred and excited about the future of Ethereum.
