SOUL OF SYDNEY RADIO #140: DJ FRENZIE 'Tonic Lounge' Friday Mixtape (2000), a promo mix for the infamous house of funk in Kings Cross known as TONIC LOUNGE. Style: Disco, Funk & House Goodness. Time: 35 Minutes About The Mix: Our good mate DJ Frenzie dropped this mix tape a around 2010 for the infamous soul and funk joint TONIC LOUNGE. The club has been closed but they were the go to late night music joint for years in Sydney hosting just about every real DJ & specialist music night around. About Shan Frenzie / Frenzie has been around the block more than a few times. He's got well over twenty years of experience behind him, a record collection that will make any deejay envious, and a concrete rep as one of Australia’s most trusted party rockers. Taking inspiration from when DJ's used to play for no less than 6 hours straight and transition between styles: Original Soul & Funk 45's - check. Deep House, Disco & Boogie - check. Hip Hop, R&B, Breaks & Beats - check. Party anthems and forgotten classics - check. Frenzie has got you covered. His Groove Therapy radio show (now in its eleventh year) has been broadcasting weekly on 2SER FM every Friday lunchtime and has become an essential listen to all musically savvy Sydney-siders, while the podcast of the show has garnered a huge loyal fan base in all corners of the globe. A veteran touring DJ of the Australian east coast, Frenzie also recently rocked dance floors in San Francisco and New York - and has had support billing alongside a who’s who of DJ royalty. Infact, pioneering deejay Grandmaster Flash requested Frenzie as his official support DJ for his most recent 2013 Sydney tour (four shows in total) - and only months earlier, Frenzie could be seen cutting it up on the turntables on stage with New Yorks Hip Hop legends The Ultramagnetic MC’s. ...and it’s no small wonder - Frenzie definitely has the skills to pay the bills. In 2012 he placed second in the New South Wales heats of the DMC, the most prestigious DJ competition in the world (He’s last foray into battle deejaying was almost twelve years earlier). But can he rock a party? Frenzie has been dropping memorable sets for years. Whether it be a one hour power mix or an all night marathon set behind the turntables, Frenzie has plenty of experience reading the crowd and always drops an entertaining set - custom built from carefully considered quality jams and a dash of turntable trickery. Not only can Frenzie mix a record, he has definitely earned his stripes as the number one chief party rocker. In October 1990, Miguel D’Souza started The Mothership Connection on 2SER FM with Roxanne. Within a couple of years it was Sydney’s preeminent hip hop radio show. Every Tuesday at 2pm (or at 2.30pm for a period), it was one of the few places on any radio station that played hip hop, underground hip hop, local hip hop, while also hosting hip hop DJs and open mic freestyle sessions. Around April 1998, Miguel handed the radio show to me. I was 20. I had no idea what I was doing. And I spent five years trying to work it out while also trying to work out what I was about. In this chat (edited from 2.5 hours), Miguel and I compare notes about the show, what it meant to us, the role we think it played in the local community, some of our favorite memories, and how it changed us. Topics include: - How the format of the show evolved - The recent Australian youth protests. Is change happening? - Indigenous hip hop - Finding yourself by bringing others together Contributing to a community while analyzing it - How Miguel researched and interviewed people Getting people into hip hop - Dealing with aggression, bad rap, open doors - How the Internet and September 11 affected rap and the business of rap - The Four Elements, style enforcing, and fascism Stepping aside as one ages - or not? - Participants, observers, and tourists in subcultures - What’s real hip hop and who gets to decide? - Finding an identity in Australia as an immigrant Names mentioned include: Molly Meldrum, Easy Bass, DJ Kavi-R, Gil Scott Heron, Bootsy Collins, Roy Ayers, Roc Raida, DJ Qbert, Def Wish Cast, Just Us, Mako and Perret, Katalyst, Obese Records, Next Level Records, Parallax Records, Celsius, Bliss n Eso, Hilltop Hoods, Elefant Traks, Urthboy, Meta Bass n Breath, The Sleeping Monk, Ugly Duckling, Raised by Wolves, Wu Tang Clan. After tearing the roof off our DHA Weekly radio show last month, we invited Henry Compton from Lioness Presents in Sydney to join the podcast for episode #074. This is only our second all-vinyl mix, and what a quality piece of work Henry has put together. Henry is a Sydney-based DJ, and along with his Lioness Presents partners, is responsible for showcasing some of the world's finest DJs at a variety of underground warehouse parties over the past 12 months. Lioness Presents have hosted the likes of Linkwood (FIRECRACKER RECS), Mark de Clive-Lowe (TRU THOUGHTS), Pablo Valentino (MCDE/ FACES), Steve Spacek (WARP), Raf Daddy (DFA / Two Bears) and Inkswel (RUSH HOUR / BUREK). Even though Henry has almost 2 decades DJ-ing experience it's only recently that he has pushed himself further. Previous Henry has held spots on radio shows on Bondi FM and 2SER FM, and worked behind scenes as a label manager for an independent distribution company. The next event for Lioness Presents (www.lioness.net.au) is the one and only Recloose (Rush Hour / Planet E) on August 23rd at GoodGod Small Club in Sydney, so if you're in the area get down to it! When we asked Henry his motivations and track selections for this mix, he said "it's a selection of predominantly new tracks from some of my favourite producers that have been rocking my boat lately and also fitted the DHA podcast brief. I definitely wanted to create a mix with a flow that works well for home or headphone listening. For those familiar with DHA you may notice a couple of similar tracks to my set for the DHA Weekly radio show (bit.ly/006-HenryCompton), I hope that like for me this isn't an issue as they literally haven't left my record bag ;) There's a couple of bits that aren't digitally perfect, but that's the joy of vinyl... It was fun to put together and I hope you get enjoyment from repeated listening." 01. Tornado Wallace | Thinking Allowed (Original Mix) [ESP Insititute] 02.
