How am I 50???? Well I am, and I celebrated in Miami, including djing several happy hour sets at Better Days...where they give me the musical freedom to record mixes like this! (Thank you Will and team) The first half starts off chill, a little lovers rock remixes, lots of rn'b, 90's hip hop, some old school and retro (you know me, nice and eclectic - hell, I start with a slow Adele song!) and then gets into some old school / retro and even a nostalgic freestyle set, reminiscent of my youthful March Break trips to Miami, listening to Power 96! Then the 2nd half I'm starting to build up the energy with some indie dance, then into some retro remixes, into house remixes of hip hop, into a throwback 90's hip hop set. (Ignore the fader cut outs in The City Is Mine near the end, DJ Spiff had just pulled up to the booth to head on after me, and the Brooklyn in him couldn't be held back lol!). Thank you for continuing to keep listening to this old man's mixes. Hope you enjoy this one!Subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id306968245Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dj_j_meBookings & Merch: jamiewichartz @ yahoo.ca

Our guest today is a pioneering reggae MC whose unique style not only changed the UK reggae scene but helped lay the foundations of British lyricism across the board. Anthony Henry aka Tippa Irie was a forerunner of the new Black British sound of reggae that went from domestic basements in South London to Top of the Pops and world recognition. Tippa's 'fast chat' style not only brought speed and eloquence of delivery to the fore but also crucially gave credibility to the sound of British MCs speaking in their own accents, referencing their own experiences and creating their own unique styles of music. What started in the reggae dancehalls opened up opportunities for the new generations of authentic Black British voices that went on to develop new genres such and Lovers Rock, Jungle and Grime. Over the last 40 years Tippa Irie has built a lasting legacy through his solo work and collaborations with the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Alexander O Neal, The Far East Band and Congo Natty aka The Rebel MC. Now at the age of 58 Tippa remains at the top of his game and has published a new book titled 'Stick to my roots' about his incredible journey through life and the music business, we are delighted to welcome a bona fide reggae legend to the show. Before that however we talk to Justin Lewis about Pop trivia and Deb talks to Eamon about the endless FOMO a DJ feels when they move. In this bonus episode of The Cinematography Podcast, we interview Shabier Kirchner, the cinematographer of Past Lives. The film is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Past Lives, written and directed by Celine Song, is about childhood sweethearts reconnecting as adults after many years. When cinematographer Shabier Kirchner, who is from Antigua, was sent the script, it immediately resonated with him. “Past Lives was not just a standalone amazing script, but I found myself in the material. A lot of what I was going through, being an immigrant to the US, being from the Caribbean, reconnecting with a friend, falling in love, all of that stuff was happening while I was reading the material and it just felt like it was written for me.” Shabier and director Celine Song had an amazing first conversation, and he wasn't aware that she'd never made a film before. Fortunately, they had an extensive amount of time to prep the movie, and they chose to shoot on Kodak 35mm film. The film takes place in New York and Korea, and they knew they had to shoot it out of order, starting with all of the New York scenes which take place later in the story. Shabier and Song also spent time discussing how to use the language of the film to express what the characters were experiencing. Past Lives tells a story about how relationships change over time. Shabier chose to translate this into deliberate pacing with long tracking shots, keeping the lighting natural and simple. In the film, natural elements tell the passage of time as well, through rain, clouds and the changing light. Even the characters Nora and Hae Sung tell a story about time in their movements. “We were speaking about the final scene in the film, and I asked Celine a question of what direction should they walk? In a very Celine fashion, she (said) 'Well, they should walk right to left because that is into the past. And she should drop him off in the past and then walk from left to right back into the future and up the stairs.' That very small and simple moment in our conversation led and informed the entire language of the film in terms of how we move the camera from left to right.” Shabier broke out as a cinematographer a few years ago on director Steve McQueen's five-part anthology series, Small Axe, winning a BAFTA for lighting and photography. The series tells both real and fictional stories about London's West Indian community in the 1970's and 80's. McQueen chose to treat each episode as a series of small films, rather than a TV series. They would discuss and prep one, scout it, shoot it, break for a week, then begin prep for the next episode. Starting with Mangrove, the longest in the series, they shot in order as much as possible, with Lovers Rock next. Shabier says it was a nice release for the crew's pent-up emotions on Mangrove, which dealt with anti-police protests and then the trial of nine Black men accused of starting a riot. They knew they could put joy and energy into Lovers Rock, a much simpler story about a house party, love and music. Shabier thinks McQueen structured the shoots for Small Axe in a way that was very smart, creating a serious mood when they needed to be serious, and lightening the mood as needed. Past Lives is still in some theaters and available on VOD. https://a24films.com/films/past-lives The Small Axe series is on Amazon Prime. Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 111 Sam is joined by director and producer Marc Jobst. His new show, the live-action adaptation of ONE PIECE is now streaming on Netflix. Simon has chosen Small Axe: Lovers Rock (68 mins), directed by Steve McQueen and co-written by McQueen and Courttia Newland. The film originally aired on the BBC as part of the Small Axe series in 2020. Lovers Rock stars Micheal Ward and Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn, with original music by Mica Levi.
