GRAMMY-winning, Mercury Prize-shortlisted, genre-defying icon Estelle joins CCTV: The Nonstop Pop Show for an exclusive POP 101 deep dive into one of the most unboxable careers in modern pop music.Chris and Chantel Nicole sit down with the West London native to take it all the way back, from her early days at the legendary Deal Real record shop sharing stages with Roots Manuva and Rodney P, to becoming the first artist signed to John Legend's Homeschool Records, to delivering "American Boy," one of THE defining pop songs of the 2000s.We get into "American Boy" almost 18 years on, the journey through "Shine," "All of Me," "True Romance," and her full reggae statement "Lovers Rock," and the building of her independent label and brand Established 1980. Estelle shares her observations on the current global wave of Black British artists, from FLO to RAYE to PinkPantheress, after being honored at the inaugural Black Women in Entertainment Honors. She also opens up about her recent full-circle moments with John Legend on the Get Lifted 20th Anniversary Tour, performing with Slick Rick at the MOBOs, and the iconic "American Boy" Usher moment at The O2.Then we dive deep into "Stay Alta," her sixth studio album, exploring highlights such as "Roses (Now's the Time)," the title track with Channel Tres, "Let It Drop" with Durand Bernarr, collaborations with D-Nice, Teedra Moses, Russell Taylor, and the philosophy behind choosing joy. Plus her brand new single "Live, Love, Learn" and what's coming next.Catch Estelle live at Blue Note Hawaii in June and Splendour Festival in Nottingham this July 2026.Join us on Patreon!: https://www.patreon.com/CCTVPOPSFollow us on social media: https://linktr.ee/cctvpopsFollow Estelle:  @EstelleDarlings  0:00 - Intro1:56 - The Beginning5:38 - "The 18th Day" 7:18 - John Legend and "Shine"10:20 - "American Boy"14:13 - Black British Women in Music16:40 - "All Of Me", "True Romance" and "Lovers Rock"21:45 - Being an independent artist24:27 - Garnet and Steven Universe30:40 - "Stay Alta"51:59 - "Live, Love, Learn"53:55 - 2026 live showsReferences“1980” MV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9FjfHoIMCw&pp=ygUMZXN0ZWxsZSAxOTgw “Wait A Minute” feat. will.i.am MV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vAJsJa3fWo&pp=ygUVZXN0ZWxsZSB3YWl0IGEgbWludXRl “American Boy” feat. For over 40 years, Sade has been making music that defies trends, ignores fads, and sounds just as fresh today as it did when Diamond Life dropped in 1984. On this episode of Planet LP, host Ted Asregadoo is joined by his wife, Julie, to talk about the band that has become the soundtrack of her daily life. With only six studio albums to their name — Diamond Life, Promise, Stronger Than Pride, Love Deluxe, Lovers Rock, and Soldier of Love — Sade has built one of the most devoted fanbases in music history. The band's lineup of Sade Adu, Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, and Paul Denman has never changed since 1982, and their music carries a consistency and elegance that is nearly impossible to find anywhere else. Julie breaks down her favorite songs from every album, talks about what draws her back to Sade's music day after day, and makes the case for why this band deserves a spot in any serious music lover's rotation. Whether you're a longtime Sade fan or someone who's only heard Smooth Operator on the radio, this episode will make you want to hit play on the entire discography. Studio One changed music forever. But history doesn't tell itself — people do. In this special episode of Reggae Hour, we reason through the legacy and controversy surrounding Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, the visionary producer behind Studio One. Celebrated as the architect of Jamaica's most influential label, Coxsone built a system that launched global sounds — but also one that left many musicians unnamed, unpaid, and unheard. This episode explores power, authorship, and silence in early reggae history. We move from the birth of the sound system era, through questions of ownership and control, and into the music that defined a generation. This is not cancellation. This is completion.

This week on @RoadPodcast, the crew chops it up with UK DJ and producer @snipsmusic, founder of London's legendary “Living Proof” party. Snips breaks down how he got his name (01:41), his early love for house music, and the influence of UK genres like Lovers Rock, Jungle, and Drum & Bass. He shares wild stories from the London scene — including the time they accidentally booked a fake MF DOOM — and reflects on the rise and fall of “Living Proof” (12:30). The crew delves into the evolution of UK hip-hop, the legacy of @timwestwoodtv, and iconic UK shows featuring @jayz and @bustarhymes (24:10). Snips also discusses the beauty of vinyl culture (34:01) and the politics of equipment snobbery — from USB sticks to Serato (52:19). Things heat up during a fiery debate on NY hip-hop elitism, @souljaboy, and the future of DJ tech (1:19:30). Later, Snips critiques NYC's current house scene, the optics of “diversity” in nightlife, and why he focused on building a community in Brooklyn (1:31:04). The episode wraps with sharp takes on @50cent, @jarule, the divide between mainstream and underground rap, and one last rant about his Twitter beef with @Nelly (2:03:10). Lovers Rock is a romantic subgenre of reggae that emerged in mid-1970s London, blending soulful melodies with reggae rhythms. It was pioneered by producers like Dennis Harris, Dennis Bovell, and John Kpiaye, who established the Lovers Rock label in 1977. The genre provided a softer, more melodic alternative to the politically charged roots reggae of the time, resonating deeply with the Black British community. Dennis Bovell played a pivotal role in shaping the Lovers Rock sound, producing hits like Janet Kay's "Silly Games," which reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1979. The genre's emphasis on love and emotional expression provided a platform for female artists, with figures such as Carroll Thompson and Louisa Mark gaining prominence. Lovers Rock became a staple at house parties and sound system events, fostering a sense of community and cultural identity. The impact of Lovers Rock extended beyond music, influencing fashion, dance, and social dynamics within the Black British community. It provided a space for emotional expression and connection during a time of racial tension and social upheaval. The genre's legacy continues to inspire artists and audiences, underscoring its significance in the tapestry of British musical and cultural history. How am I 50???? Well I am, and I celebrated in Miami, including djing several happy hour sets at Better Days...where they give me the musical freedom to record mixes like this! (Thank you Will and team)  The first half starts off chill, a little lovers rock remixes, lots of rn'b, 90's hip hop, some old school and retro (you know me, nice and eclectic - hell, I start with a slow Adele song!) and then gets into some old school / retro and even a nostalgic freestyle set, reminiscent of my youthful March Break trips to Miami, listening to Power 96! Then the 2nd half I'm starting to build up the energy with some indie dance, then into some retro remixes, into house remixes of hip hop, into a throwback 90's hip hop set. (Ignore the fader cut outs in The City Is Mine near the end, DJ Spiff had just pulled up to the booth to head on after me, and the Brooklyn in him couldn't be held back lol!). Thank you for continuing to keep listening to this old man's mixes. What Goes Around?

Our guest today is a pioneering reggae MC whose unique style not only changed the UK reggae scene but helped lay the foundations of British lyricism across the board. Anthony Henry aka Tippa Irie was a forerunner of the new Black British sound of reggae that went from domestic basements in South London to Top of the Pops and world recognition. Tippa's 'fast chat' style not only brought speed and eloquence of delivery to the fore but also crucially gave credibility to the sound of British MCs speaking in their own accents, referencing their own experiences and creating their own unique styles of music. What started in the reggae dancehalls opened up opportunities for the new generations of authentic Black British voices that went on to develop new genres such and Lovers Rock, Jungle and Grime. Over the last 40 years Tippa Irie has built a lasting legacy through his solo work and collaborations with the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Alexander O Neal, The Far East Band and Congo Natty aka The Rebel MC. Now at the age of 58 Tippa remains at the top of his game and has published a new book titled 'Stick to my roots' about his incredible journey through life and the music business, we are delighted to welcome a bona fide reggae legend to the show. Before that however we talk to Justin Lewis about Pop trivia and Deb talks to Eamon about the endless FOMO a DJ feels when they move. In this bonus episode of The Cinematography Podcast, we interview Shabier Kirchner, the cinematographer of Past Lives. The film is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Past Lives, written and directed by Celine Song, is about childhood sweethearts reconnecting as adults after many years. When cinematographer Shabier Kirchner, who is from Antigua, was sent the script, it immediately resonated with him. “Past Lives was not just a standalone amazing script, but I found myself in the material. A lot of what I was going through, being an immigrant to the US, being from the Caribbean, reconnecting with a friend, falling in love, all of that stuff was happening while I was reading the material and it just felt like it was written for me.” Shabier and director Celine Song had an amazing first conversation, and he wasn't aware that she'd never made a film before. Fortunately, they had an extensive amount of time to prep the movie, and they chose to shoot on Kodak 35mm film. The film takes place in New York and Korea, and they knew they had to shoot it out of order, starting with all of the New York scenes which take place later in the story. Shabier and Song also spent time discussing how to use the language of the film to express what the characters were experiencing. Past Lives tells a story about how relationships change over time. Shabier chose to translate this into deliberate pacing with long tracking shots, keeping the lighting natural and simple. In the film, natural elements tell the passage of time as well, through rain, clouds and the changing light. Even the characters Nora and Hae Sung tell a story about time in their movements. “We were speaking about the final scene in the film, and I asked Celine a question of what direction should they walk? In a very Celine fashion, she (said) 'Well, they should walk right to left because that is into the past. And she should drop him off in the past and then walk from left to right back into the future and up the stairs.' That very small and simple moment in our conversation led and informed the entire language of the film in terms of how we move the camera from left to right.” Shabier broke out as a cinematographer a few years ago on director Steve McQueen's five-part anthology series, Small Axe, winning a BAFTA for lighting and photography. The series tells both real and fictional stories about London's West Indian community in the 1970's and 80's. McQueen chose to treat each episode as a series of small films, rather than a TV series. They would discuss and prep one, scout it, shoot it, break for a week, then begin prep for the next episode. Starting with Mangrove, the longest in the series, they shot in order as much as possible, with Lovers Rock next. Shabier says it was a nice release for the crew's pent-up emotions on Mangrove, which dealt with anti-police protests and then the trial of nine Black men accused of starting a riot. They knew they could put joy and energy into Lovers Rock, a much simpler story about a house party, love and music. Shabier thinks McQueen structured the shoots for Small Axe in a way that was very smart, creating a serious mood when they needed to be serious, and lightening the mood as needed. Past Lives is still in some theaters and available on VOD. https://a24films.com/films/past-lives The Small Axe series is on Amazon Prime.
