A little over 40 years ago, Dr. Steven Hayes experienced his first panic attack—when he was a young assistant professor in psychology, no less! In the intervening years, and drawing in part on his own recovery from panic disorder, he developed Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and produced a huge body of work that has revolutionized our understanding of human language and cognition. Today, he is one of the most highly-cited scholars in the world, across all disciplines of study. And, he remains a soulful and wise clinician, who generously shared some of his insights about addiction for this episode of the Flourishing After Addiction podcast.Steve and I talk about “psychological flexibility:” a revolutionary pivot toward working with our thoughts and feelings, rather than trying to fight or change them. One definition of psychological flexibility is to be open, grounded, and committed to values-based action. We discuss making sense of addiction in his framework, and he speaks out against the biomedicalization and over-categorization of the phenomenon. He talks about the centrality of values and why it's necessary to find a life worth living as part of recovery. We discuss Steve's understanding of spirituality and transcending a limited self-concept, and how that fits into his work. And—something I'm so happy Steve prompted me to do—he leads us all through a guided exercise to take perspective and to get a taste of dropping the small self. I'm really happy that he's given us this practice experience. Find a quiet place and give it a try (it's only about 8 minutes or so, toward the end of the interview). Steven C. Hayes is a Nevada Foundation Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada. An author of 46 books and nearly 650 scientific articles, he is especially known for his work on "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" or “ACT”, which is one of the most widely used and researched new methods of psychological intervention over the last 20 years. His popular book Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life for a time was the best-selling self-help book in the United States, and his more recent book A Liberated Mind was released to wide acclaim. Dr. Hayes has been President of several scientific societies and has received several national awards, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. According to major indices like the Institute for Scientific Information and Google Scholar, he is ranked among the most cited scholars in all areas of study in the world. For all human beings, the future higher self holds the key to profound wisdom and expansion. It also gives us the tools with which we can combat the dark, parasitic forces that have already launched their attack on us. These dark forces want us enslaved and living in misperception so we can never connect with our higher selves, and therefore never escape the maze of fear. The good news is that our future self is available to all of us and we can shift towards it to live in stillness and resonance. What are some of the factors and forces that make it hard for us to shift to our higher selves? In this episode, I'm joined by the author of “The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of Your Mind”, Rei Rei. He shares why finding your center is the key to a resonant and resilient existence. The key to managing yourself through these turbulent waters is to find your own center and live by your own center so that you're untouched by everything that happens. -Rei Rei Three Things We Learned The root of many of our challengesOur limiting beliefs don't belong to us, where do they come from and how do we shift back to who we truly are? Why so many teachers speak in parablesBy externalizing the scripture, are we missing the entire point of faith and the divine? How to let the higher self lead youThe heart is an instrument of the divine, how do we use it to inform the steps we take? Guest Bio Rei Rei is an astrologer and the author of “The Labyrinth: Rewiring the Nodes in the Maze of Your Mind”. He specializes in tools such as future self shifting, shadow work, and yoga meditation, which have been helpful in his experience of teaching how to integrate fear-based emotions, limiting beliefs and redundant habits. Now, Rei Rei employs those same tools to support others in achieving the same. His goal is to help people come full circle like he has by aiding them in reconnecting to their innermost child and bringing their future self into the present. According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 78 percent of children reported more than one traumatic experience before five years of age. (https://www.nctsn.org/) Unresolved childhood trauma often manifests in adulthood as multiple health problems, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and a lack of direction. Trauma is a wide umbrella with some events being more obvious than others. Examples of trauma include the death of a loved one, rape, physical, mental, or emotional abuse, divorce, a breakup, bullying, natural disasters, accidents, war, and the list goes on. Traumas cause a loop in the brain to be formed that makes you feel unsafe. Without healing and “resetting” your brain's thought waves, you could be caught in a subconscious fight, flight, or freeze situation. Don Wood, PhD, is the author of two top selling books, Emotional Concussions and You Must Be Out of Your Mind. He is the Founder & CEO of the Inspired Performance Institute, and creator of the patented TIPP method. TIPP is a cutting-edge method inspired and developed through the newest developments in neuroscience and designed to clear away the effects of disturbing or traumatic events, repurpose old patterns and set the individual's mind up for peak performance. Dr. Don's TIPP method helps reboot the brain's stuck thought patterns. This makes it possible to stop chronic negative thought loops (AKA limbic loops), and not let the pain of past trauma continue to affect you today.Highlights From This EpisodeWhat counts as “trauma” and how do we identify it in ourselves? It's estimated by www.psychologytoday.com approximately 85% of people worldwide (adults and adolescents) have low self-esteem. Success and Mindset Coach Sandy Rutherford is determined to reverse this trend. She believes you are your most asset BY FAR, AND what is your most valuable asset within you by far? YOUR MIND. Your success begins and ends with your mind, and the right thinking. Right thinking means thinking in a certain way that allows success to unfold and manifest with ease. Success truly is a science. And now lucky for all of us Rutherford has put pen to paper and decided to write her first book. on October 25, 2022, “Navigating the "High C's to Success, An 8-Step Charted Course to Extraordinary Achievement.” Rutherford has brought together the key concepts taught by so many of the great teachers and laid them out in a strategic order. There are 8 concepts, all beginning with the letter "C", hence the name “Navigating the "High C's" to Success”. This week I want to introduce to some and remind others about situation awareness. The threats have been increasing among many groups. You are probably in one of them. Don't think being pro-gun is a talisman against getting popped in the head by a group of teens. Are you paying attention? Your Mind is Your Primary Weapon. Check out my friends at: Https://crossbreedholsters.com Situational awareness literally means to be constantly aware of your situation. Now in terms of security, it means to be constantly aware of your security situation and identifying potential threats and dangerous scenarios. This sounds a bit stressing to be aware of risks and danger all the time, specially if you live in a high risk level neighborhood or city. So we want to focus on how to achieve this awareness in a relaxed way. Situational awareness is more a state of mind than a learned skill. This is important not only for security agents and corporations, but also and most important for individuals to learn how to identify criminal behavior and other dangerous threats around them so they can react accurately and defend themselves and others. Cooper Color Code (4 Levels of Situational Awareness) Condition White: total unawareness. The news is full of these oblivious victims. Condition Yellow: a relaxed awareness, the optimal everyday state of being. Condition Orange: a specific alert has triggered your full attention. If you haven't done it yet, thinking through your plan of defense or getaway happens here. Condition Red: ready to defend your life.
Are your thoughts actually keeping you from achieving all God has for you...because you're believing something that's not really true? On this episode, author, pastor, worship leader and speaker Chris Alessi will show how you can take control of your most powerful (and vulnerable) asset - your mind. Chris Alessi serves as a campus pastor at Metro Life Church in Miami, FL, under his parents Pastors Steve and Mary Alessi. As the author of two books, "Up Next" and "Clickbait: Win the War for Your Mind in the Age of Distraction", Chris' passion is to help his generation and the next to walk in the fullness of the life available to them - by writing books, sharing God's truth, and promoting the principles that his parents passed down to him as he stepped into his unique role in ministry. His newest book "Clickbait" explains the powerful influence the enemy exerts on our minds by baiting us into believing lies rather than focusing on God's truth. Jeopardy! champion Amy Schneider tries a body scan meditation to sharpen her focus and calm her nerves as she prepares for the Tournament of Champions. Episode summary: Amy Schneider is the most successful woman to ever compete on Jeopardy!. Part of her winning strategy was to shut down all her mental chatter and completely focus on the competition. But when the cameras are off, she struggles to find the same calm. For today's show, Amy tries a body scan practice to connect with her body and quiet her busy mind. Later we hear from Jonathan Greenberg, a Harvard psychology professor. He explains how mindfulness can make us better problem solvers, and how that can benefit our emotional health, too. How to Do This Practice: Find a quiet place where you feel safe and comfortable. You can be standing, sitting, or lying down. Close your eyes, and take a few deep, long breaths. Move your attention through your body slowly, part by part, starting with your feet. Focus on your feet, then your calves, knees, and so on, until you get to the top of your head. Without judgment, notice what sensations you can identify in each part of the body. When your mind wanders, gently and with self-kindness, guide your attention back to the part of the body you're focusing on in the present moment. Just three years ago, in the dark of night on a battlefield in a foreign land, Army Ranger Sergeant First Class Ryan Davis was hanging on to life by the very slimmest of threads. The tale of heroism, selfless love and courage, and perseverance in the midst of profound physical, emotional, and psychological suffering that unfolded on and after that battlefield incident is nothing short of mindblowing. It's the stuff for which Medals of Honor are awarded. In fact, Medal of Honor petitions have been submitted for individuals involved in Ryan's rescue. It's the stuff out of which new battlefield protocols and medical interventions are developed. In fact, new protocols and interventions have been developed as a result of lessons learned. And it's the stuff on which Hollywood blockbusters and award-winning documentaries are based. In short, it's the kind of story for which I have absolutely no frame of reference, and neither do most of you, I would imagine. Ryan was pushed to the extremes of human experience and lived to tell the tale. And tell the tale he does--in this episode, for you and me. It would be easy to spend an entire episode and then-some on the battlefield incident itself and the harrowing ups and downs of his recovery from it. But I did my best to manage my curiosity about those chapters of Ryan's story so that we could also explore what Ryan has learned on the extreme frontiers of human experience that we can integrate into our lives now--before a crisis hits or Mortality makes a surprise appearance. Because those who venture to the outer limits of human experience and return have knowledge that the rest of us need. Today, in some of the most fundamental ways, 10-year Army Ranger veteran Ryan Davis is literally and figuratively a new man. Precisely how will become clearer as you listen to our conversation. As you listen, though, don't fail to look for how Ryan's Story has insight that you can put into Action in your own life. Insight + Action = Transformation. Don't overlook the Transformation potential available to you in Ryan's harrowing tale--as different from your own Story as it may be. Because no matter how different the specific circumstances of each of our Stories may be, we are all caught up in the same Big Story of humans trying to find their way through Life on Planet Earth. That's where Ryan's story and your story converge. Tune in to the full episode for the whole story and all of Ryan's hard-won wisdom for your life. Highlights from This Episode Ryan shares a blow-by-blow account of the battlefield encounter that changes his life forever Ryan shares the two moments that turned the tide in his recovery. Ryan shows us how the body follows the mind–for better or for worse. The choice is yours. Ryan explains how to use our pain to propel us forward in life. How to transform your minutes into “moments” Separating your job from your Purpose What Ryan knows because of his experience that the rest of us need to know What's most important to Ryan now Redeeming Ryan's Suffering In Your Own Life "We've stared this in the eye and we've cried at it and we've screamed at it and we've fought with it and we do not fold to it." Ryan said this in reference to how he and his son have responded to Ryan's new reality. This, my friends, is sometimes what it takes to keep moving forward in life. Resolve. Grit. An unwillingness to give in or give up, no matter what life throws at us. An unwavering determination to keep going. The spirit of a warrior. Among many, many things, this sticks with me from Ryan's story. I want to embody and exhibit the spirit of a warrior in life--battered and bruised but undefeated to the end, triumphant in death. What sticks with you? How will Ryan's Story change your Story for the better? Search your heart, be honest, and be specific. Let Ryan's suffering be redeemed in the fruit that it produces in your life. May Ryan's sacrifice be redeemed in all of our lives.
