In this thought-provoking episode, Christopher Brown—lawyer, novelist, and urban naturalist— takes us on a journey through the landscape around his home in Austin, Texas, the edgelands where the city meets the wild. Drawing from his latest book, A Natural History of Empty Lots, Christopher explores the resilience of urban ecosystems, the unexpected biodiversity thriving in neglected spaces, and the connections between land, politics, and justice in an era of climate disruption. This is a compelling dialogue about the uneasy balance between human civilization and the natural world—and how rethinking our relationship with wild spaces could reshape the cities of tomorrow. We delve into the intersections of rewilding, environmental justice, and the unfolding polycrisis, unpacking what these abandoned landscapes can teach us about adaptation, resilience, and envisioning a more livable future. This episode includes readings from A Natural History of Empty Lots, and excerpts of a new sound composition by Cat Byrne, Clapton edgelands (i), gathered in the Lea Valley, Clapton, London, during November 2024.  Christopher Brown is an American author and attorney based in Austin, Texas, renowned for his work in both science fiction and nature-focused nonfiction. His latest book, A Natural History of Empty Lots, published in October 2024, is a blend of nature writing, literary nonfiction, and memoir that explores the intersection of urban environments and wild nature.  Brown's debut novel, Tropic of Kansas (2017), was a finalist for the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. He continued to explore speculative themes with Rule of Capture (2019) and its sequel, Failed State (2020), the latter of which was nominated for the 2021 Philip K. Dick Award.  In addition to his writing, Brown practices law and authors the urban nature newsletter Field Notes. You can subscribe to Chris' excellent Fieldnotes newsletter here: https://fieldnotes.christopherbrown.com/ Cat Byrne is a DJ, radio host, and forest researcher from East London. She hosts the monthly radio show, Biorhythms w/ Cat, on Balamii Radio, where she explores natural sounds, textured rhythms, and percussive down-tempo, and also a live place-based radio show on RTM, Listening From. Cat is also a keen field recordist, weaving her own field recordings throughout her sets. In this episode, I explore the concept of biorhythms and how they impact our daily fluctuations in energy and mood - something we all experience. What is the connection between your body and mind? With insights from "How Emotions Are Made" by Lisa Feldman Barrett, I highlight the importance of treating low moments as temporary - observe and understand your body's signals. Through personal anecdotes, such as experiences at the climbing wall, I illustrate how sudden mood changes can be seen as part of our natural ebb and flow, rather than a crisis. I advise against making rash decisions during these "off" days and remind you to be nice to yourself! Stay curious and embrace those unique rhythms. Emotions can often be just noise needing patience and observation. Whether it's the weather, sleep, or subtle stressors, recognizing and navigating these elements can lead to a more balanced and less reactive approach to life's challenges.  Based on personal experience - of course! I'm human. (The quote about butterflies is attributed to a number of people! Lisa Feldman Barrett mentions her daughter's karate teacher using it... and it might be orignally from Rob Gilbert - motivational speaker.  Not sure! It's a good image though.) “It's all right to have butterflies in your stomach. Just get them to fly in formation”     (Video version over on YouTube)

In this episode, we're working on our element of Resilience and exploring the third "Root of Resilience" known as aligning with nature. The Roots of Resilience were laid out in one of Dr. Emmons book, "The Chemistry of Calm." This root builds on our last one ("managing energy") by embracing the cycles and rhythms that are part of a much bigger system. This may seem "woo-woo," but.. well, it's not. Like all mammals and really every other living thing, we are influenced by cycles around us. A growing field of study known as chronobiology is bringing more scientific understanding to these cycles (for example: seasonal affective disorder and seasonal mood shifts). We'll talk more about this root and how increasing awareness of your connection with nature and adding some simple skills in response to this connection can support your mood, energy, and resilience in really powerful ways. Episode 83 with Catherine Avery. “With neurodivergent folks, we need to recognize that if it's already working, don't try to fix it.” Catherine is an ADHD & productivity coach and the CEO of Productivity by Design. She believes that in order to be truly productive, you need to learn how to be intentionally unproductive.  Catherine coaches her clients through proven strategies that help them master their time, space, and information so they can be more productive, more profitable, and have more time to spend doing the things they love.  Catherine is a former “queen of clutter,” a recovering Type-A Wall Streeter, and a cancer survivor/thriver who was officially diagnosed with ADHD in her 50s.  We talk about her own deep dive into her “chemo brain” and brain fog, and how that ultimately led to her ADHD diagnosis. We also talk about the grief that occurs to many of us diagnosed later in life when looking back over our lives with this new lens. And we talk about burnout, how to lean into our natural biological rhythms of productivity, and knowing when to hit pause. And finally, we compare our crazy TMJ stories — and I rehash my own story about teeth grinding and vertigo! If you grind your teeth at night, you definitely want to stick around and hear more about our experiences. How to Leverage Your Biorhythm for Peak Performance

While biorhythm theories have been present since ancient cultures, including those that practiced natal astrology, most theories are based on cycled periods – twenty-three days (physical/male), and twenty-eight days (emotional/female). The physical, or male, cycle relates to coordination, physical energy, strength, and overall well-being. Twenty-three days in length, the cycle supports more awareness of times for optimum exertion and time for rest and recovery. The emotional, or female, cycle is a 28-day cycle centers around creativity, awareness, and emotional sensitivity and can be helpful in managing depression or other mood disorders.  Whether we're aware of it or not, humans operate on a delicate biorhythm of various cycles, from the physical, intellectual, intuitive, spiritual, to even the aesthetic. Biorythms can be thought of as the body's holistic mathematical system that can predict, or when studied, consciously control certain aspects of one's life such as high performance, creativity, and emotional receptivity. Biorhythms are “invisible waves of energy within the human body that are constantly in flux.” Considered unique to each person, these energy levels are thought to begin the moment we are born. But how can you leverage your biorhythm to achieve peak performance as a women?  Kayla Osterhoff has dedicated the last several years of her career to researching women's neuropsychology. Her investigative efforts into the brains and minds of women led her to a major discovery about the female biorhythm and how it provides women with unique cognitive and leadership abilities. Kayla is now dedicated to sharing her research discoveries to empower women leaders around the globe!

Today's episode is a gentle and illuminating reminder that in order to see the most beautiful parts of the Earth, we must first actively protect and deeply respect her.   Our guest today, Nina Karnikowski, is an author and travel writer who invites others to think twice before they, well, travel. An Australian native with a home base in Byron Bay, Nina had written about and traveled to over 60 countries before experiencing a personal awakening on a work trip to Antarctica that transformed her life trajectory. From that point on, Nina began to slow down and rethink the impact travel has on climate change.  In the years since, she has courageously flipped her decade-long travel writing career on its head in order to commit to and reframe conscious travel and living and has released two magical books: Go Lightly, How to Travel Without Hurting the Planet and Make a Living Living, Be Successful Doing What You Love. Along with being a prolific writer and author, she is first and foremost a sustainability advocate, Earth ally, creative powerhouse and Lover of the Natural World.    This conversation feels perfectly timed as the pandemic restrictions lift and we venture out of our homes.  Nina's latest book, Go Lightly, was released this Spring and serves as a sort of high-vibe handbook that answers to her commitment to low impact travel: by inspiring and educating readers on how to explore our fascinating planet without causing it further harm. In this episode, Nina imparts many takeaways on how to travel the Earth without recklessly deepening our carbon footprint, how to practice more conscientious travel and off put emissions when we do visit faraway places, the importance of showing (and paying) reverence to local communities, her creative process, spiritual journey and how to be grateful for all that's just within reach. We also get a sweet, intimate and candid look at how her marriage continues to light her up after 10 years of partnership!   Thank you Nina, for your wisdom and your heart.     Mentioned In This Episode:    JOIN US FOR A JAM SESSION w/ Rocío Graves Wednesday July 14th at 11 am PST / 2pm EST via IG Live at @nitsacitrine  Where to find Nina Karnikowski: NinaKarnikowski.Com @TravelsWithNina on Instagram E-COURSE:  Writing for Earth E-COURSE:  Writing As Ritual   Books Mentioned In This Episode: Go Lightly by Nina Karnikowski Make a Living Living by Nina Karnikowski   Soundfood Episodes Mentioned: “RADICAL SELF AWARENESS:  Rooting into Authenticity, Biorhythms, and Rituals for Self Care with Rocío Graves”   “DEMYSTIFYING THE BEAN PROTOCOL: Food as Medicine and the Healing Powers of Legumes with Unique Hammond” Also Mentioned In This Episode: Nina's Husband Pete's natural wines - Natural Order Wine Natural Order Wine (@natural_order_wine) • Instagram Susan Piver - Buddhist Philosopher & Teacher Jaqueline Suskin Poet    MIKUNA SPECIAL CODE FOR LISTENER:    Use the code SOUNDFOODFAMILY for  25% off first purchase 30% off subscriptions from mikunafoods.com (chocho based superfood products)    TUNE INTO SOUNDFOOD: WEBSITE  INSTAGRAM   TEXT US ON OUR TELEPORTAL   for high vibrational updates on all things SOUNDFOOD @ 1-805-398-6661    MERCURIAL MAIL  Subscribe to our newsletter HERE.   Connect with our Host: @nitsacitrine Lastly, we would be so grateful if you felt inspired to leave us a review on APPLE PODCAST!

Today’s episode will support all of our listeners to reconnect and tune into our highest, most authentic selves.    In the blossoming of Spring, we are nourished by this heart-opening conversation with the magical and loving Rocío Graves. Rocío has been through the seasons of life: from heartbreak, to chronic health issues, to spiritual rebirth and healing, we now find her in a joyous and healthy  explosion of self-creativity: exploring cooking, gardening, poetry, unconventional self care and through it all: embracing a transformational philosophy of slowness.    Rocío is a true advocate for self evolution and humanity. She is a food alchemist, writer, chef, dancer, activist, food photographer, healer, steward of the land, and unique voice for sustainability.  She received her BA in Human Rights in 2010 in London where she first dove into learning about water and farmer’s rights and later continued to explore through her studies of biodiverse regenerative farming and seed saving at vandana shiva’s organic farm and organisation ‘navdanya. While Rocío’s travels have taken her around the world, including to India (where she began her healing journey into Ayurveda) we now find her grounded, full circle,  in her birthplace of Mallorca, Spain.    Our conversation highlights what Rocío has been able to embody so beautifully; honoring one’s Self. We explore routine, food, self-care, inner work, and all the pathways that lead to healing. Rocío highlights that through our journey in self-love, we recognize our interconnectedness with each other, the Earth, the Cosmos, and beyond.   Mentioned In This Episode:    Sunday Supper May 23rd tickets: Sunday Supper w/ Beatrix Ost & Michelle Gagliano   Join our GIVEAWAY! Life seems to be governed by a bunch of cycles with peaks and troughs. You may be familiar with the circadian rhythm: our sleep/wake cycle that is governed largely by the timing of light exposure. But have you heard of your physical, intellectual and emotional cycle?  The theory was developed by Wilhelm Fleiss in the late 19th century and gained popularity in the 1970s. Since then the idea of biorhythms has sustained an array of hit pieces questioning its validity and calling it a pseudoscience. Could it be that tools, especially free tools, that we can use to empower ourselves are suppressed and talked down upon?  Tiffany Barsotti received her Master's of Theology in Energy Medicine and has integrated biorhythms into her practice with clients in combination with biofield readings. In this interview she describes what biorhythms are, the three different cycles, what the criss-crosses mean, and how we can use them to improve our lives. @derekcarr has been producing and releasing Detroit-tinged electronic music for almost two decades. He has recently released music on labels such as ‘for those that Knoe’, @subwax-bcn-distribution, ‘Ferox’, @craigie-knowes and @firescopemusic. Born and raised in Westmeath, Ireland, Derek got an early taste for finely crafted melodic techno through compilations like Network’s "Bio-Rhythms" and Warp’s "Pioneers of the Hypnotic Groove". Having been a fan of bands such as Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode through his formative years, Derek felt drawn to this new sound coming from Detroit, Sheffield and Leeds. Recognising the home made ‘punk’ ethos of early ‘Bleep techno’ he began to pick up second hand instruments, initially investing in a cheetah sampler and boss drum machine. Derek then set about creating his own sound, a sound that owed much to the techno pioneers, B12, the Black Dog, As One, Nexus 21 and Rhythmatic to name but a few. In 2001 Derek launched his own label "Trident Recordings" and released the "Copper Beech e.p." (the only release to date) a collection of deep soulful techno. Only 500 copies were pressed and it has since become something of a collector’s item. Subsequent releases on "Digital Soul" and "Geek Records" further cemented Carr’s place amongst a new generation of techno producers that looked to combine soul and melody with electronic dancefloor grooves. Derek Carr has built a worthy reputation for producing stunning deep techno and delivering quality DJ and Live sets across Europe. Stay Rave with #R13!

On her way she is attacked by an Angel yet manages to defeat it. She is loud and boisterous, and a sore loser when it comes to playing crane claw games seen in arcades. The boys watch her until she starts accusing them of perving on her. The attention brings round a gang of thugs, the girl is ready to fight and does well defending herself but Shinji is weakest of the two and manages to get punched in the face. The police are called in and they all scatter.   On his way to NERV, the base of the Evas. Shinji spots the red-haired girl and discovers that she is Asuka, the 2nd child.   Misato Katsuragi’s ex-boyfriend arrives. Acting as Asuka’s supervisor he has secretly delivered a foetus like specimen known as ADAM, the first human, and the possible reason why the Angel attacked Asuka on her journey to Tokyo 3. ADAM now belongs to Gendo Ikari.   As Rei’s Eva is being repaired it forces Asuka and Shinji to team up and fight the next angel. Their lack of team work results in their fight being a complete failure and the Angel duplicating itself into two. Misato puts the two of them into a room together and sets up a training regimen to hopefully sync both Asuka and Shinji’s biorhythms. Asuka tells Shinji that she has no father, and was chosen from a donated sperm by her mother, her raison d’etre is to pilot Eva, defeat the angels and to be acknowledged for it. She says it doesn’t matter if she hasn’t got a father, however, at night, Shinji hears Asuka crying and calling out to her mother in her sleep. Eventually Asuka’s jealous and competitive nature is enough to help inspire the sympathetic Shinji and the two succeed in defeating the angel.   Instagram – weappreciatemanga.co.uk Twitter - @RealJamesFitton Website – Weappreciatemanga.com Email – Weappreciatemanga@gmail.com

There are three guests on this week's special December fundraising month episode of the podcast.  Julie Snyder is the co-creator and producer of the hit podcast series Serial. Emmanuel Dzotsi is the co-host and reporter for Serial's most recent season which focused on crime and punishment in America as revealed through what happens at the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas in Cleveland.  To support The Chauncey DeVega Show during this fundraising month you can make a donation via Paypal at chaunceydevega.com or at Patreon.  Julie and Emmanuel reflect on what they learned about justice and inequality in season 3 of Serial, the challenges of balancing truth-telling and narrative, and how race and class--especially white privilege--complicates the ways that different audiences respond to the "shocking" unfairness that Serial "exposed" about the country's criminal justice system.  Criminal justice reporter George Joseph is the third guest on this week's show. George's work has appeared at The Appeal, ProPublica, The Guardian, Foreign Policy, and The Verge. His most recent story IBM Used NYPD Surveillance Footage To Develop Technology That Lets Police Search by Skin Color warns the public about how major cities such as New York are deploying facial recognition and other "artificial intelligence" programs which "learn" about the "races" of different groups in order to "teach" cameras and other surveillance technology to search and follow their human targets on command. This is Orwellian-level racial profiling enabled by "big data" and algorithms. George also shares his reporting on police brutality and how plain clothes and other undercover cops are running amok in America and what this reveals about a larger police culture of racism and discrimination and violence.  On this week's podcast Chauncey explains how Michael Flynn's deal with Special Counsel Mueller is just one more sign that the Trump mafia crime family is encircled. The question now becomes how will Trump and his cabal lash out against the rule of law to stay in power by expanding their authoritarian regime.  And Chauncey reviews the story about how a black private school-academy in Louisiana was able to use black pathology porn and other stereotypes to hustle Ivy League and other almost all-white elite colleges and universities.  Of course, Chauncey "connects the dots" by calling out how the real issue is the ways that elite universities function as gatekeepers of privilege and social capital which will do anything to punish those individuals who dare to expose the real con job that is elite higher education and a corrupt ruling class in America.  SELECTED LINKS OF INTEREST FOR THIS EPISODE OF THE CHAUNCEY DEVEGA SHOW  Adam Wheeler Went to Harvard Louisiana School Famous for Sending Black Kids to Ivies Abused Children, Falsified Transcripts  Louisiana School Made Headlines for Sending Black Kids to Elite Colleges. Conversations About Everyday Pain

Where don’t we feel the impact of stress? It can affect the body, mind, our sleep, appetite, relationships, etc., creating a complicated (and sometimes painful) web of causes and effects. By the time we’re forced to address pain, it can be tough to identify what the underlying trigger was. Join Dr. Liou, in this lighthearted conversation with Jen about workplace stress and pain, while they take a winding path through the topics of stretching, pain medicine, biorhythms, and depression. Jen discusses her transitioning career from teacher to principal to real estate broker and the unexpected physical changes that came with each new role.  Jen shares how revelatory it was to have someone else ask the right questions about her pain, which led to constructive and practical changes in her daily routine. Who do you talk to for help uncovering and addressing the roots of your stress and pain? Key Points from this Episode: Mechanical and environmental stressors in the workplace. The value of conversation in treatment to connect the dots and set a productive course of recovery. Safe and productive stretching through muscle activation. Understanding the role of over-the-counter Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief. The unexpected and unpredictable benefits that can arise after removing stress. Schedules that adapt to your natural biorhythms. Biorhythms and depression: the importance of finding successful motivators to avoid the cycle of depression and fatigue when the system is neuro-biochemically compromised. Appropriate responses to pain or stress are as unique as the individual feeling them. Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Derek Carr on Facebook: www.facebook.com/derek.carr.507 @derekcarr Derek Carr has been producing and releasing Detroit-tinged electronic music for almost two decades. He has released music on labels such as ‘For those that Knoe’, ‘Revoke’, ‘Nice and Nasty’ and ‘Headspace’. Born and raised in Westmeath, Ireland, Derek got an early taste for finely crafted melodic techno through compilations like Network’s ‘Bio-Rhythms’ and Warp’s ‘Pioneers of the Hypnotic Groove’. In 2001 Derek launched his own label ‘Trident Recordings’ and released the ‘Copper Beech e.p.’ (the only release to date) a collection of deep soulful techno. Only 500 copies were pressed and it has since become something of a collector’s item. Subsequent releases on ‘Digital Soul’ and ‘Geek Records’ further cemented Carr’s place amongst a new generation of techno producers that looked to combine soul and melody with electronic dancefloor grooves. Derek Carr is a name known by few and far between but he has built a worthy, but unfortunately not widely-spread, reputation for putting together stunning deep techno.

Hibernation is an ingenious adaptation that some animals employ to survive difficult conditions in winter. This unit examines the differences between hibernation and torpor, and discusses the characteristic signs of hibernation behaviour. It explores the triggers that bring on hibernation, and whether internal signals or external season cues are predominant. It also examines the physiological adaptations that occur in hibernating animals. This unit builds on and develops ideas introduced in the openlearn unit on Animals at the extreme: the desert environment (S324_1). The theory of biorhythms claims that one's life is affected by rhythmic biological cycles, and seeks to make predictions regarding these cycles and the personal ease of carrying out tasks related to the cycles. These inherent rhythms are said to control or initiate various biological processes and are classically composed of three cyclic rhythms that are said to govern human behavior and demonstrate innate periodicity in natural physiological change: the physical, the emotional, and the intellectual (or mental) cycles. Others claim there are additional rhythms, some of which may be combinations of the three primary cycles. Some proponents think that biorhythms may be potentially related to bioelectricity and its interactions in the body.
