Episode 183: Remembering Marianne Faithfull, Jesse Colin Young And Roy Ayers, Jr. + More May 18, 2026 Replaying from March 2025. Welcome back to this hour that we call Tales Vinyl Tells.  It's your chance to hear some of the great album rock from the 60s and 70s mostly.  We've been doing these programs since late 2019 and have covered lots a ground.  You know and I know that we've just scratched the surface of recorded rock, so the new shows keep coming.  The reruns aren't bad either.  They can be heard on your favorite podcast app.  Just search for Tales Vinyl Tells. Today we're going to say thanks and farewell to Marianne Faithfull, Jesse Colin Young of the Youngbloods and vibraphonist Roy Ayers Jr. The music under me is Roy Ayres with Herbie Mann at the 1969 Harlem summer of soul extravaganza with a song cowritten by Isaac Hayes. Those three have entered the room next door, as Henry Diltz coined the phrase. You also get some of the blues with Boz Scaggs and Duane Allman, together. So these are the stories that songwriters and artists want to convey to you. These are the Tales Vinyl Tells. Thanks for listening today. My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com. You can hear a Tales Vinyl Tells radio program when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org and here.  We do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, iHeart podcasts, Player FM podcasts, Listen Notes podcasts and many other podcast places. Bass Archaeology – Episode 14 - Sunshine Daze! Episode 14 of Bass Archaeology travels through deep soul, jazz-funk, conscious hip-hop, electro, house and jungle to uncover how bass music evolved from warm analogue musicianship into rave futurism. This journey starts in the sun-drenched atmosphere of Everybody Loves the Sunshine by Roy Ayers, where hypnotic basslines, drifting Rhodes chords and loose groove philosophy laid foundations that producers would sample and reinterpret for decades to come. From there, the emotional storytelling of Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Knight & the Pips showcases bass as narrative support rather than technical showmanship. The warm melodic playing underneath Gladys Knight's timeless vocal performance reveals how soul music used restraint, pocket and feel to create emotional depth. The show then drifts into the jazz-rap haze of Pacifics by Digable Planets, where sampled jazz textures and dusty low-end grooves transformed old records into entirely new worlds. That atmosphere deepens further with Thieves in the Night by Black Star, a philosophical and socially conscious masterpiece that uses sparse boom-bap bass weight and haunting samples to create one of the defining underground hip-hop statements of the late 90s. Electro and reggae collide next with Reckless by Afrika Bambaataa featuring UB40, capturing a period where programmed basslines and drum machines began reshaping global dance music culture. That evolution accelerates into the club foundations of modern electronic music with Ooh, I Love It (Love Break) by The Salsoul Orchestra, one of the most sampled dance records ever made and a crucial bridge between disco orchestration, electro-funk and hip-hop break culture... The second half of the episode explores how these foundations evolved into house and rave futurism. Can You Feel It by Mr. Fingers channels deep house minimalism into spiritual club music, while Lindo Momento by Monsieur Van Pratt reinterprets disco warmth through modern nu-disco production and analogue-inspired groove. Underground pressure arrives through modern house gem called 'Games' and Jungle originiations like 'Untouchable' , before the journey descends fully into the shadowy low-end futurism of Valley of the Shadows by Origin Unknown one of jungle and drum & bass culture's most iconic atmospheric records. Finally, Out of Space by The Prodigy detonates the rave energy completely, fusing reggae samples, breakbeats and hardcore intensity into a defining anthem of UK electronic music culture, before the Bass Archaeology band closes the episode with a liquid drum & bass outro that brings the entire low-end journey full circle. Episode 14 traces the DNA of bass music across decades and genres — from live soul musicianship and jazz-funk atmosphere to sample culture, deep house hypnosis, jungle futurism and rave energy — revealing how groove, space and bass pressure continue to connect every era of underground music history.

Today on another episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Nabil Ayers, son of musician Roy Ayers, a jazz/funk/soul giant most famous for his song "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" and is likely one of the most sampled artists of all time. A vibraphonist, singer and composer, Ayers songs have been sampled by everyone from Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige and Snoop Dogg as well as had  collaborations with Alicia Keyes, The Roots and Tyler, The Creator among others. As you will soon hear, Nabil's story is unlike anything we have heard before on the podcast. Imagine growing up knowing who your father was but only meeting him occasionally. By design. Sometimes it was a planned meeting that lasted just long enough to ask, "Do you want some Tempura?" and others were times that were literally a chance meeting on the street at a music store. As you will soon hear, we discuss this and much more around his book, 2022's My Life in the Sunshine that explains all this and much more. Nabil himself was open, engaging, honest and ready to discuss everything. What it was like growing up with a Jewish/Baha'i Faith mother who really only wanted a child at the age of 20, his relationship with his uncle Alan, a jazz musician himself who really was the masculine figure Nabil looked up to the most and how he finally had lunch with his dad well into his 30s when things seemed to not be making as much sense as they did earlier in his life. Currently a record executive, he's the President of the Beggars Group of labels, a group of well respected, independent US and UK labels, Nabil has also played in bands, owned his own record store, has his own podcast on both family and identity, called Identified, has written articles for The Guardian, the New York Times and others, has his own Substack page and much more. Accomplished, talented and versatile, Nabil opened up to us about pretty much everything we asked about. His story is about as unique take on celebrity and growing up the child of a celebrity as we could imagine. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. But none of them are like the one you are going to hear, right now.

Messy Truths Podcast

Note: This episode was recorded in October and released a little later than expected — thanks for your patience.   In this soulful and reflective episode of Messy Truths, Mar, Nesha, and Azar come together to honor the legendary voices we've lost over the past couple of years—musicians whose music shaped generations and shifted culture. Nesha opens the tribute by remembering the legendary singer and pianist, Roberta Flack, celebrating her timeless voice and the vulnerability she brought to every note.  This episode was sparked by the heartbreaking passing of D'Angelo. The trio dives deep into the legacy he leaves behind and the seismic influence he had on Neosoul, R&B, and the culture at large. Naturally, the conversation also turns to the incomparable Angie Stone, whose imprint on music remains undeniable. Together, the hosts pay homage to other musical giants we've lost, including malletKat Pro vibraphone master Roy Ayers, visionary producer and composer Quincy Jones, and D'Wayne Wiggins, co-founding member of Tony! Toni! Toné!, whose artistry helped define the R&B sound of Oakland, California and beyond the Bay Area. Join us as we reflect on the artists whose music raised and moved us. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes David Fritz Fortune. A Morehouse College graduate, filmmaker, and proud resident of Atlanta, Mr. Fortune uses art to share refreshing portraits about black people resisting Racism in different ways. Gus T. immersed in this year's Seattle International Film Festival and caught about three dozens films. Almost all of them focused explicitly on the global System of White Supremacy. There were so many films at the 51st SIFF, Gus nearly missed Mr. Fortune's COLOR BOOK, which touchingly examines being a black father in Atlanta. After the sudden loss of a black mother and wife, Mr. Fortune captures the bond and grief shared between a black father, played by Will Catlett, and his son, portrayed by Jeremiah Daniels. COLOR BOOK showcases a black parent raising a child with disabilities and the daily impediments - like parenting while black and without a car - to living in metro Atlanta. We'll ask Mr. Fortune why he wanted to showcase this black father/son relationship and if intentionally made a film without White characters. Acknowledgements to the late Roy Ayers and Mr. Fortune's late father. #SIFF2025 INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: http://cash.app/$TheCOWS

Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, an institution that also nurtured artists like Erykah Badu, Roy Hargrove, Norah Jones, and Edie Brickell. She furthered her studies with scholarships to Kansas University and Bishop College in Dallas but ultimately chose to learn through experience, joining a local band led by jazz guitarist Zachary Breaux and embarking on tours across Texas and Louisiana. In the early 1980s, St. Victor relocated to New York City, where she joined Roy Ayers' touring band, Ubiquity. She also toured with Freddie Jackson and Glenn Jones and became a sought-after session vocalist, collaborating with artists like Lisa Fischer, Cindy Mizelle, Audrey Wheeler, Brenda White King, Tawatha Agee, and Curtis King. Her versatility and distinctive voice made her a prominent figure in the New York music scene.St. Victor, the lead singer of The Family Stand, a trio formed in the late 1980s with Peter Lord Moreland and Vernon Jeffrey Smith, achieved international success. Their hit song “Ghetto Heaven” reached #10 on the UK Singles Chart in 1990 and was remixed by Nellee Hooper and Jazzy B of Soul II Soul. For politics we talk tariffs, the U.S. stance on Ukraine and Russia, and the political dynamics surrounding recent events, including Zelensky's meeting with Trump and the State of the Union address. For pop culture, we pay tributes to music legends Angie Stone and Roy Ayers, recap of the Oscars triumphs and disappointments, and talk about Zoe Saldana's recent controversies and acceptance speech. This week on Transmissions: Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the duo behind the label and concert series Jazz Is Dead. Founded in 2017, Jazz Is Dead began releasing new work by jazz artists frequently sampled in rap and hip-hop in 2020, including releases from legendary players like Roy Ayers, Azymuth, Gary Bartz, Lonnie Liston Smith, Tony Allen, and more. On January 31st, the duo released JID022, featuring new music from 88-year-old Ghanian highlife and afrobeat master Ebo Taylor, and on April 4th, they will release JID023, featuring Brazilian vocalist Hyldon. Recorded in analog at Linear Labs, the Jazz is Dead series does more than pair younger players with established elders; it showcases the powerful link that connects musicians across decades.  As producers, musicians, podcasters, and much more, both Ali and Adrian are heavy hitters. Muhammad is of course known for his work with A Tribe Called Quest, Lucy Pearl, and The Midnight Hour, a duo with Younge. And of course Adrian is an accomplished musical force too, check out his work with The Delfonics, Souls of Mischief, Ghostface Killah, and Kendrick Lamar.  We taped this conversation in January, in the hazy, strange weeks after the terrible fires that tore through the city of Los Angeles. That's where our conversation starts—reflecting on history lost, and what it takes to preserve it, and also, why they don't necessarily think of Jazz Is Dead as an archival or preservationist project in the first place. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more.
