Question 39 - What is adoption? Adoption is the gracious act of God in which He makes us members of His family with all of the rights, privileges, and inheritance of being His child. Romans 8:15-17 For more resources, please visit https://www.brcc.church/adopted-by-god
God's desire to adopt us as his children is at the very heart of the gospel. Understanding the role of adoption in Greco-Roman times, enriches the process of us being adopted out of slavery to sin, and becoming coheirs with Christ. There is no greater joy than the privilege of being adopted by God through faith in Jesus. For in Jesus, we enjoy the liberties and privileges of being the children of God, both now and in the kingdom to come.
The Book of Romans Series: Nikki and Colleen talk through Romans 8:12–17. Did you know that when you trust Jesus, you are adopted permanently by the God of the universe and you are in His family? Colleen and Nikki also discuss Andrew Farley and his non-biblical teaching of hyper-grace.Music: Falling Awake © 2010 Nathanael Tinker. Listen in as we unravel the concept of election and its depiction throughout scripture. Understand how God chose the people of Israel, not based on their merit but His unwavering love and faithfulness. Uncover the revelation that election isn't about us or our deeds, but rather about God and His steadfast love. Having been set free by the Spirit, we do not have to live fear and defeat since we have been adopted as the children of God from Romans 8:12-17.
What does it mean that Christians are adopted by God? What is the theological concept of adoption as it relates to salvation?
Are you adopted? How does that illustrate what God has done for us? For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by who we cry "Abba! Father!" Romans 8:15 Notice the contrasts again. Fear and death and slavery are all associated with the flesh in these passages. But we don't need to be subject to those things anymore. We have been adopted. We don't often get to choose our family. But imagine the joy of being chosen. After being alone, isolated, and unwanted, all the sudden someone wants you. They appreciate you. They want to help launch you and see you shine. We're all adopted by God if we follow him. We get to call him Dad. I always wanted a boss that would be OK if I screwed up trying to do the right thing. I could be wrong, but I bet your best friends are like you. We like people who like us. God not only loves you, he likes you. He chose you. And he has a job for you. You won't get fired from it. You may get reassigned, but you won't get taken out of the game. God can use you any time or place. Why not ask him to give you an assignment today? He has a job for you, but it's not as painful as you might think. In fact, when we do what he wants we experience his joy. Why not be a blessing to someone today and watch God bless you both? What we do because we follow Jesus matters. You've been adopted. Go for it. Also, if these podcasts or our online community are a blessing to you, please consider making a gift to Follower of One. It's amazing enough that God forgives us. But the gospel is even more incredible than that. Through Jesus, God has adopted believers into His family. We can know God as Father, a relationship of utmost intimacy and steadfast security. Scripture passages cited (or alluded to) in this message include Romans 8:12-17; Genesis 5:28-29; 17:5; 35:16-18; Luke 1:59-63; Matthew 3:17; Revelation 2:17; Zephaniah 3:17; and Psalm 143:12.

Romans 8:14-17 (English Standard Version) 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
