Smarter Homes, Safer Seasons: Practical Home Advice from Dan DiClerico Good Housekeeping's Good Better Best interview series from The Not Old Better Show Welcome to another episode of Good Housekeeping's Good Better Best, on radio and podcast, where we bring you trusted voices and real-world advice to help you live smarter, safer, healthier and better at home — no matter your age or stage of life. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and today's episode is brought to you by Longevity Mitopure Gummies: The First-Ever Longevity Gummies, powered by Mitopure. A delicious, easy way to put more energy into your day! And today we're digging into the nuts and bolts of home life with someone who's spent over two decades helping homeowners get the most out of their spaces — Dan DiClerico, Director of the Home Improvement and Outdoor Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute. Dan's tested thousands of tools, gadgets, and appliances — and written just as many reviews — all to help families like yours figure out what's worth your money and what's just collecting dust. He's a former roofer, a lifelong remodeler, and a full-time dad, keeping up a century-old Brooklyn brownstone that's seen it all. Today, Dan's giving us practical advice for getting your home fall- and winter-ready — including whether solar generators are a smart move, what makes a good air purifier actually good, and why rain barrels and gas generators might deserve a second look. This episode is for the doers, the fixers, the proud owners who want their homes to work for them — especially if you're part of our 50+ community looking to age safely, wisely, and comfortably in place. So stay with us — you'll hear what to do now, what to plan for later, and maybe even a few tools Dan thinks every homeowner over 50 should have in the garage. Let's get into it with Dan DiClerico, right here on Good Better Best. That's going to wrap up our conversation with Dan DiClerico, and I hope you took away as much as I did—like why a solar generator might be more practical than you think, or how something as simple as sealing your windows could save you a bundle this winter. Dan's advice is full of common sense, tested knowledge, and just enough gadget talk to keep it fun—and useful—for every homeowner, especially those of us looking to stay safe and comfortable in the years ahead. If you'd like to hear more from Dan or check out his latest reviews and recommendations, head over to GoodHousekeeping.com, and of course, you can find this episode and all our previous conversations at notold-better.com. Until next time—stay curious, stay well, and remember: it's not about being not old—it's about being better, as well as fully alive. "Pick the story first, then go find the brands to fit it." This week, Kenneth Walker returns and is joined by podcast and industry veteran Mark Stoner, President of Ashbusters, to have a practical conversation about the process of building an actual showroom. In this episode, Tim, Mark, and Kenneth discuss: Product positioning in your showroom so that they tell a cohesive story and make it easier for customers to understand both what they are and how they can solve their particular problem. The Good/Better/Best display approach: Good - cost effective with a few basic options. Better - "Bang for the buck." Best - Premium look with the most design flexibility. Showroom elements, layout, and coming up with a plan/sticking to it; displays, digital design centers, music, and how to balance those things effectively. What are we doing with the opportunities that we have? Using foundational metrics to turn intentional marketing dollars into estimates and sales. The planned follow-up for showroom visits and "Explaining the Process" to customers, while maintaining the goal of getting into the home. Don't miss this follow-up to last week's episode to hear why applying the sales and marketing process to a showroom in a new way can make you a better service company. ------ Become a supporter of The Fire Time Network and get access to awesome rewards: https://itsfiretime.com/join To hear more audio articles from our magazine, subscribe to the Fire Time Magazine Podcast: https://www.itsfiretime.com/magazine Read The Fire Time Magazine Reader Edition online: https://magazine.itsfiretime.com Download The Fire Time Magazine app to get full access to the magazine (for free): https://www.itsfiretime.com/app

For over 50 years, For the Strength of Youth has been a guide for generations of Latter-day Saint youth. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me. Send us a textBob Gappa has built one of the most influential franchise consulting firms in the world, working with over 1,650 franchisors across 14 countries during his remarkable 50-year career. His fundamental insight? We've got the purpose of business all wrong."The purpose of a business is to get and keep customers," Gappa explains, challenging the profit-first mindset dominating boardrooms worldwide. This perspective shift transforms how successful businesses operate, from compensation structures to customer service approaches. Most revealing is his observation that the employees with the greatest impact on customer satisfaction—those on the front lines—are typically the lowest paid in the organization.Drawing from his experiences reorganizing operations for Catholic bishops post-Vatican II to helping Middle Eastern businesses expand through franchising, Gappa shares wisdom applicable to entrepreneurs at any stage. He advocates for focusing on predictive analytics rather than lagging indicators like profit and loss statements, tracking metrics like customer acquisition, retention, and frequency that truly forecast business health.Gappa's personal journey includes a pivotal moment when, down to his last $75 during a recession, he invested in a small newspaper ad rather than a night out. That single decision led to a quarter-million-dollar contract that launched his franchising career. "Being close to bankruptcy caused my success," he reflects, highlighting how persistence through adversity often precedes breakthrough. For today's business leaders, Gappa distills his half-century of experience into actionable advice: clarify core beliefs between partners, understand the fundamental difference between creating the future (CEO's role) and making it happen (COO's role), and recognize that comfort is the enemy of growth. Most importantly, he urges finding something greater than yourself to excel at—something that improves others' lives while bringing you fulfillment. In an enlightening discussion, the podcast delves into the journey of a seasoned entrepreneur (Justine Beauregard) who has navigated the intricate landscape of bootstrapping a business. Her narrative is steeped in personal anecdotes, tracing her aspirations back to childhood influences, particularly the entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated by her grandmother. This early exposure ignited a passion for business that persisted through various creative ventures during her youth. After a substantial period spent in corporate environments, she made the pivotal decision to launch her consulting agency, doing so with a mere $919, an embodiment of her commitment to frugality and resourcefulness.Throughout the dialogue, Justine shares her experiences, marked by both notable successes and significant failures. Her initial forays into the business realm were characterized by a robust profit margin, owing to the nature of her service-based offerings. However, she candidly addresses the challenges of bootstrapping, particularly her struggles with technology and the temptation to overextend herself in an attempt to save costs. This led to a series of frustrating setbacks that highlighted the necessity of understanding one's operational needs and the value of investing in appropriate tools and solutions. Her reflections serve as a cautionary tale, underscoring the importance of strategic decision-making in the entrepreneurial journey. As the episode progresses, listeners are treated to a wealth of practical advice derived from her experiences. She introduces the 'good, better, best' framework, which serves as a strategic tool for evaluating choices and optimizing resources. This approach empowers entrepreneurs to start with feasible options, gradually refining their processes as they gain clarity about their objectives. Additionally, she stresses the importance of making timely decisions to facilitate progress and avoid the pitfalls of analysis paralysis. By synthesizing her journey into actionable insights, the entrepreneur equips aspiring business owners with the knowledge necessary to navigate their own bootstrap ventures with confidence and acumen.Takeaways: Bootstrapping a business requires careful evaluation of available resources and options. The balance between spending time and money is crucial for effective business management. Understanding the scope of your objectives can significantly enhance your decision-making process. Creating a 'good, better, best' framework is beneficial for optimizing business solutions. It is essential to make quick decisions to facilitate iteration and improvement. In this podcast episode, Casie Ludemann discusses her experiences as a busy mom while balancing priorities such as fitness, family, and her podcast. She emphasizes the importance of making health and fitness a consistent priority, even if it means adjusting the focus from time to time. She addresses common misconceptions about workouts, particularly those related to trendy classes like Orange Theory and F45, arguing that while these can be enjoyable, they might not produce the long-term results people seek.Casie explains that building muscle and achieving a toned physique requires progressive overload through consistent strength training, rather than constantly changing workouts. She encourages listeners to consider their fitness goals seriously and to prioritize strength training, viewing classes as supplementary rather than central to their fitness routine.Throughout the episode, she highlights the pivotal role of nutrition in achieving fitness goals, asserting that exercise alone is insufficient without proper dietary habits. Casie concludes with a call for listeners to seek education and professional guidance in their health journey, while maintaining a supportive community around them for motivation.Let's keep it real, tackle the chaos of life, and make those resolutions stick—one rant at a time!

Megan Lautz understands that shiftwork makes it nearly impossible to follow a perfect diet – as do other life events that squeeze your time and impact your outlook on food. That's why her nutrition advice for firefighters centers on what's realistic – the “good, better, best” approach, which encourages making smarter choices for the situation and setting yourself up for success with simple tools, like go-bags for snacks on shift. Plus, Lautz has worked with firefighters through her company, RescueRd, long enough to know when to push and when “a little bit of shame adds some razzle-dazzle” to the guidance. Irrational Labs helps companies and nonprofits understand and leverage behavioral economics to increase the health, wealth and happiness of their users. In this episode, Kristen explores the intricacies of pricing strategies, emphasizing the importance of understanding behavioral economics to influence consumer decisions effectively. She discusses how techniques like the decoy effect, anchoring, and the power of price endings (like 99 cents) can drive customer behavior. Additionally, she highlights the challenges of pricing revolutionary products due to the lack of reference points and the creative approaches needed to establish them in the market. Why you have to check out today's podcast: Deep dive into pricing strategies like the Good-Better-Best model, the Decoy Effect, and the psychology behind price ending to help you understand how to make pricing decisions that drive customer behaviors and increase sales. Find out valuable perspectives on how human psychology influences purchasing decisions which is essential for anyone looking to optimize their pricing or marketing strategies. Discover practical advice and real-world examples to see how you can apply these concepts to your own business. "It's all relative. So, what are customers using as a reference point? If it's off your product site, then you need to help them create a new reference point within your product site." - Kristen Berman Topics Covered: 01:14 - Sharing how she transitioned into behavioral economics from her role as a product manager at Intuit 03:42 - How behavioral science tie to pricing and product 06:10 - An example of how behavioral economics influence product decisions 08:50 - Explaining the concept of the "paradox of choice" 11:35 - Turning the path of least resistance into the preferred choice 14:30 - Simplifying decision-making for customers with the concept of "good, better, best" product offerings 16:42 - Explaining the decoy effect and how it influences consumer decision-making 19:09 - The reason behind the presentation of pricing options in the context of behavioral economics 22:43 - The concept of framing in sales in the context of product features and the importance of trials in subscription-based models 25:25 - How people often rely on heuristics, or mental shortcuts, when making decisions about prices 28:56 - Kristen's best pricing advice 29:28 - Various sources of reference points 31:19 - The challenge of pricing revolutionary products due to the lack of existing reference points Key Takeaways: "People don't come in with an understanding of the exact thing that they want to purchase at the exact moment. And so, our job is to help them understand value, and choice helps people understand value." - Kristen Berman "We're using the heuristics on how big the number is to make a lot of fairness decisions." - Kristen Berman "We are relative creatures. We have reference points and we use our reference points to understand value. And so, it's not just the price, it's the reference point that we're using." - Kristen Berman People/Resources Mentioned: Intuit: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.com Dan Ariely: https://danariely.com/all-about-dan/ One Medical: https://www.onemedical.com Steve Jobs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Jobs Apple: https://www.apple.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/ Study: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thesoundagency.study&hl=en_ZA&pli=1Shopify: https://www.shopify.com/ph Connect with Kristen Berman: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristenberman/ Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com

Can you control if you are the best? Can you control if you are good enough? Focus on getting a little better each and every day.
Today we are entering into Passion Week—commemorating Jesus' final days leading up to the cross, His burial, and His resurrection. We are all familiar with these events. As Jesus came into the city of Jerusalem, the crowd placed palm branches on the ground. In a few days, Jesus would be crucified, and they would place His body in the ground. But three days later, He would rise from the ground. Let's note three comparisons of things that may be good versus something that's best.

In this episode we discuss what it means to disengage a horse's hip. That phrase doesn't sound as though it is something a positive reinforcement trainer would want to do to a horse. And that's true. We don't want to do it to a horse. That would put us into force-based training, but it is something you need to teach a horse so you can ask for the “dance step” when it is needed. You need it for such everyday tasks as taking a horse through a gate and then turning with your horse so you can close the gate. You need it at other times for safety when your horse is startled or gets excited, and you need to direct him out of your space. And you need it to teach the balance needed for advanced performance. So you need to be able to ask a horse to yield his hips. The question is not are you going to ask him for this maneuver, but how are you going to teach it? This is what we explore in this episode. We define what is meant by disengaging the hips. We look at how it is typically described and taught in the horse world, and then we look at this behavior from our perspective of positive reinforcement teachers.
