Monk Fruit Extract: Zero-Calorie Sweetener, Surprising Benefits? Ep. 1241 MAY 2025A recent PRISMA-guided systematic review published in Nutrients synthesized findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the impact of monk fruit extract (MFE) on metabolic health, lipid profiles, inflammation, and regulatory considerations. The review included a number of RCTs (note: while some search results indicated 10, others mentioned 5 included studies; refer to the final published article for the definitive number). The findings indicate that MFE may help reduce postprandial glucose levels (by 10–18% in included studies) and insulin responses (by 12–22%). Some studies also reported reductions in inflammatory markers such as IL-6 and TNF-α. No severe adverse effects were observed in the reviewed trials. The review also notes that MFE is approved for use in the United States and China, with its status under review in the European Union. The authors suggest MFE shows potential as a functional food ingredient for metabolic health, though they highlight the need for long-term clinical trials and a harmonized regulatory framework to confirm its long-term safety and efficacy within sustainable health strategies. Here's a question we've probably all wondered about at some point: am I practicing enough? As a teacher, I can tell you that my experience has demonstrated that if a harpist - and this includes me - has to ask the question, the answer is probably no, you're not practicing enough. But of course, the real answer is likely a little more complicated. It depends on what you're trying to do. On the light end of the practice spectrum, if you're just trying to keep the rust off either your fingers or your pieces, you probably only need a few minutes each day. On the other end, if your ambition is to learn a piece or stretch your technique or develop a skill, you are going to need more time. I know it would be helpful to know exactly how much time you're going to need, but coming up with a number would just be guessing. Even so, that doesn't mean there aren't some factors that can guide you that will keep you from overworking yourself or underutilizing your time. Simply put, your goal is to practice enough to make progress, but not so much that you actually sabotage your efforts. Today I'll tell you what this means and how I think you can find the right amount of practice time for you. I've talked about practice time with you before on the podcast. In the first show of this year, 2025, I shared an acronym to help you remember what to include in your practice. That acronym spelled the word “practice” and the letters stood for Play, Review, Aspire, Create, Technique, I, Connect and Enjoy, That's episode 190, and I will link to it in today's show notes. In episode 148, I taught you about practice bursts, short 15 minute chunks of time that you could use to keep on track when your schedule won't allow you a longer practice session. I will link to that episode in the show notes too. But today, we're taking a different approach. We're going to look at why we practice, how our practice can help us maintain the status quo, or help us achieve a goal or help us stretch our skills and grow. We'll talk about time and how we need to manage it and how to truly enjoy the time we spend at the harp. Because that's what harp happiness is all about. Leyla emphasizes the importance of understanding cholesterol's role beyond just heart health and challenges common misconceptions. Putting your house in a trust has many benefits—from financial savings to peace of mind. You can continue to live in the home and control the property. You can avoid the capital gains tax, the 2% transfer tax, and the inheritance tax while still qualifying for the homestead exemption and the Clean and Green tax benefit. And, of course, a trust protects your assets to pass the wealth to your loved ones. In this discussion, Jeff Bellomo—an experienced estate planning and elder law attorney with a master's degree in taxation—explains planning techniques for estates with a net worth in the $300,000 to $5 million range. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (00:00) Episode introduction. (02:40) A trust is a legal contract between three parties. The grantor creates the trust, the trustee controls it, and the beneficiary receives it. (06:56) A grantor can also serve as the trustee and live in the home, much like a beneficiary. The grantor is taxed at individual income tax rates. (08:01) As a trustee, a grantor can sell the home, buy another home, and avoid the capital gains tax if they live in the home two out of five years as their primary residence. (08:53) If the trust provides only for lineal descendants or siblings, there will be no transfer tax. Use an experienced estate planner to still qualify for the homestead exemption. (12:44) A grantor trust will not jeopardize the Clean and Green tax benefit. (13:00) If there is a current mortgage on the primary residence, it can be added to the trust. Be sure to continue to pay on time. (16:17) It's wise to create the trust when a person or a couple is younger so that the Medicaid five-year lookback period does not pose a problem. (20:04) A trust allows the family to protect accumulated equity, access funds to enhance the grantor's life, and keep the grantor in the home. (21:35) Ultimately, a trust provides flexibility and peace of mind. The family knows that the grantor(s) and the house are protected. ABOUT BELLOMO & ASSOCIATES Jeffrey R. Food has a lot of power in the health space. It might even be the reigning king, but sometimes, it's distracting you from more important issues. Take sugar, for instance. It's not the villain in the story. In fact, there are many benefits of sugar (some may surprise you). Spoiler to tip one: Your body needs sugar. Unfortunately, our use of processed and modified sugars has led many people to overconsume them, creating a cascade of health problems associated with sugar. But to clarify, those problems exist not because you consumed sugar but because it causes instability or a rise in your blood glucose levels that are outside your homeostatic balance. I think it's important to clarify the problem - that sugar is not the problem but the instability or spikes in your blood glucose - when you understand this, you can focus more on blood glucose regulation and less on restriction. Inside this podcast, I teach you the benefits of sugar, including why you need it, what happens when you eliminate it, the addiction behind it, and the real problem (that is less about sugar and more about stress). What if I told you that normalising your breathing pattern and walking backwards every day could change your life? My guest this week explains just how this is possible. There are very few people in the movement world who ‘grab' me online and suck me into their world with the quality of their content, but one person who did this a few months ago was this week's guest, Lawrence van Lingen. Lawrence is a highly sought-after expert in biomechanics, bodywork, and human performance. Described by Triathlete Magazine as ‘the genius of running,' Lawrence has over 25 years' experience working with elite athletes and everyday people. He's developed a unique approach that goes beyond traditional methods, blending a deep knowledge of movement, posture, and breath to optimize our performance and overall well-being. Lawrence works with some of the world's greatest athletes to enhance their performance and help them with so called ‘untreatable' injuries and, his online running workshops have become the backbone of remarkable athletic comebacks and they've also helped many people around the world, move without pain and with greater enjoyment. In order to help more people, Lawrence has created a wonderful online community that includes live and recorded classes where people of all ages and abilities can learn to understand their bodies, move better, and ultimately feel and live better. You can see all details at www.lawrencevanlingen.com. In this conversation, we discuss the intricate connection between breathing, movement, and our overall wellbeing. Lawrence explains how incorrect breathing not only affects our physical health but also impacts our stress levels, anxiety, mood, and even our relationships with others. Lawrence also explains how 3 practices: normalising our breathing patterns, walking backwards and using a flow rope - can prove transformative for so many. These are simple yet powerful techniques that can revolutionise not only how you move, but also how you feel. We explore the fascinating concept of how our bodies store emotions and trauma and how movement can be a powerful tool for release and healing. What I love about Lawrence's holistic approach is how he looks at the whole body as a system, acknowledging that to move well, we need to focus on what's happening ‘upstream' in our lives that could be impacting our physical health. We also touch on some thought-provoking philosophical ideas. Lawrence challenges us to consider whether we're ‘happening to life, or life is happening to us,' encouraging a more active and intentional approach to our movement and overall health. His ‘mastery, not medals' mantra offers a refreshing perspective on achievement and personal growth. For those interested in the technical side of running, we also discuss the phenomenon of ‘super shoes' and their potential benefits. I myself have been doing one of Lawrence's breathing routines that I first learned about on his YouTube channel and have experienced the incredible benefits. And, by the end of our conversation, you'll have the tools to start making positive changes in your own life, too. This episode is not just about running or physical health; it's a deep dive into how we can live more authentically and connect better with our bodies and minds.
