In this episode, Kim talks to Dr. Carmen Joy Imes about the women of Exodus. Dr. Imes brings her deep knowledge of Exodus to the average Christian audience, explaining how the structure and literary parallels of Exodus to show how the women are the rescuers of Moses, who then rescues the Hebrews. She provides the details of the midwives' spiritual work of saving lives. She demonstrates how Pharaoh's daughter displayed God's character as she sees Moses' misery, heard his cry, and took pity on him. She explains the Hebrew that illustrates how Miriam took a stand at the river to address Pharaoh's daughter just as Moses later took a stand to address Pharaoh. And she explains how Zipporah literally saved Moses' life as he decided which people group he belonged. Amidst these detailed portrayals of the Exodus women, Dr. Imes also points out the narrator's use of humor to depict the bumbling and nameless Pharaoh. 00:00 Introduction to Mutuality Matters 00:02 Exploring the Role of Zipporah in Exodus 01:04 Meet Dr. Carmen Joy IMEs 02:06 The Mystery of Exodus 4:24-25 03:26 Theological and Structural Significance of Zipporah 14:33 The Role of Women in the Early Chapters of Exodus 21:49 Elevating Women in Scripture 22:00 A Word from CBE 22:37 The Women of Exodus: Zipporah, Pua, and Shiphrah 22:52 The Story of Moses' Birth and the Women Who Saved Him 32:07 Moses' Identity and His Encounter with God 39:37 Closing Thoughts and Resources 41:20 Final Remarks and How to Stay Connected Guest Bio Dr. Carmen Joy Imes is associate professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, in Southern California. Being God's chosen, elect, and called people is not a passive identity. It is an identity we must live into. When Peter refers to followers of Jesus as chosen, royal, and holy he does not do so to merely make them feel good about themselves. He is helping them understand that salvation comes with a vocation. In fact, the two are inseparable. Being God's people, priesthood, and nation is a lifestyle and a full-time job. What would […]
Rhythm of Life: We often wrongly equate our discipleship with disciple. Effort = effectiveness. While it is not wrong to work towards our faith, we must remember that Christ invited us on a journey. An adventure. A “way” of living. Christ's life wasn't defined by a list of rules, or to-dos…bur rather of a beautiful series of life giving “rhythms”. In this brand new series we will unpack a day in the life of God's man and the rhythms of connecting with God's truth through the scripture, Being God's Man at Work, Gathering and Community and finishing up with the rhythms of Reflection and Sabbath.

In this episode, Ilia Delio returns to discuss Teilhard de Chardin's philosophy and its relevance to current technological advancements, specifically artificial intelligence. We explore Teilhard's integration of science, religion, and evolution, highlighting his concept of 'withinness' and 'withoutness' and his vision of a future marked by greater complexity and consciousness. The discussion delves into Teilhard's anticipation of technology's role in human evolution, the need for a cosmic perspective in understanding AI, and the potential for technology to enhance human love and compassion. The conversation also touches on Teilhard's notion of the 'noosphere,' the mystical elements of human existence, and the imperative to envision and co-create a future that fosters planetary unity and the greater good. “Moses protested, ‘If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,' they will ask me, ‘What is his name?' Then what should I tell them?' God replied to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.' God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors-the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob-has sent me to you.” - Exodus 3:13-15Genesis introduced us to the world and to ourselves. Exodus, the second book of the Old Testament of the Bible, does more to introduce us to God – to he who was, and is, and is to come. To a God so eternal that he identifies himself as I AM, but also a God so personal that he also chooses to identify himself in relation to people – the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Exodus is a book of movement, propelling the true story of God and his people forward in such a way that sets forth not just the rest of the Biblical narrative, but human history up to where we are today. It is in Exodus that we see the baby in the basket, the burning bush, the ten plagues, the first Passover, the parting of the Red Sea, the 10 commandments, and so much more. To introduce us to the book of Exodus, host Jason Wieland is joined by Dr. Carmen Joy Imes. Dr. Imes is an Associate Professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology, author of the books Being God's Image and Bearing God's Name, and is currently working on a commentary of Exodus. Welcome to the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast. Our study resumes in Hebrews 9:11 with our teacher Dr. John G. Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell will be exploring this passage as it pertains to the current ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ in heaven seated at the right hand of God the Father. In these verses we see the Lord Jesus, having entered into the heavenly holy place, not with the blood of bulls or goats, but with His own blood. Being God in the Flesh, His eternal Deity made His shed blood and His work on the cross an eternal redemption. His redemption will last forever and ever which never end. Let's turn with Dr. Mitchell to Hebrews 9:11 as he explores Christ's present work on our behalf as our great high priest.

Dr. Carmen Imes is the Associate Professor of Old Testament at Biola University in La Mirada, California. She is a prolific and creative scholarly writer, having written everything from a beautifully illustrated version of the Psalms in Hebrew, to an illustrated Exodus in Hebrew. She has written on praying the Psalms in Hebrew, and among her latest books are two we will talk about more today … Bearing God's Name and Being God's Image … both reflections on themes found in Genesis. Dr. Imes earned a PhD in Biblical Theology from Wheaton College, an MA in Biblical Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a BA in Bible and Theology from Multnomah University. She and her husband, Daniel, served as missionaries with SIM for 15 years. Today we talk with her about what it means to be the image of God.
Presented by Lauren Stibgen Wouldn't it be terrific to laugh at the days to come? While this verse from Proverbs 31 seems flippant at face value, at its core is a woman who seeks her wisdom from God and fears him first. Being God fearing and wise are both attributes of leadership that help us further show love and faith at work. If we think of Colossians 3:23 where we are implored to work as to the Lord and not man, abiding in God's Word for us helps us develop a healthy fear and reverence naturally. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised (Proverbs 31:30). We talked about our physical presence and how we can clothe ourselves with strength and dignity, but the Word here is clear. We shouldn't solely rely on this. What does fear of the Lord look like? Naturally, if we fear God we seek to behave in a manner that is pleasing to him. This could show up in leadership as honesty, being giving of your time, or even through excellence in the work you produce. It can also show up in how you resolve conflicts with others or in how you listen well to your team. This reliance on God is not arrogant, especially since we know we cannot perfectly predict or control our future. God can. Proverbs 1:7 tells us, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The fruit of our Proverbs 31 woman's fear is seen in verse 26. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue (Proverbs 31:26). Being a leader, you are in a position to provide instruction. Maybe this is as simple as on the job, technical training or providing deeper feedback to someone about specific development they need to progress to the next level of their career. In either instance we are called to be faithful. Being faithful with our words and being consistent in how we show up are all good fruits that help us love our teams well.

The Image of God (or Imago Dei) is one of the most important doctrines for youth pastors to teach teenagers, because almost every cultural landmine today finds its resolution in what it means to bear the image of God. That's why I'm excited to be talking with Dr. Imes today about her new book, Being God's Image. What is the doctrine of the Image of God and what prompted you to write this book now? Early in the book, you make the distinction between being created IN God's image and being created AS God's image. Could you share a little more about that distinction? What are some areas where the Imago Dei finds a lot of resonance in today's culture, and what are some areas where it's a powerful corrective? What's the relationship between the Imago Dei and the gospel? How can youth workers teach and talk faithfully about the Imago Dei and human dignity in the midst of the effects of sin and the fall? Do you have any practical recommendations for youth workers who want to teach about the Image of God? Recommendations: Dr. Imes' book: Being God's Image: Why Creation Still Matters Christa McKirland: God's Provision, Humanity's Need: The Gift of Our Dependence Every Woman's Study Bible (NLT) Marc Cortez: Resourcing Theological Anthropology: A Constructive Account of Humanity in the Light of Christ Follow Dr. Imes' Youtube Channel for Torah Tuesday videos Join YPT's Facebook group: @youththeologian (make sure you answer the membership questions) Follow YPT on Twitter: @youththeologian Follow YPT on Instagram: @youththeologian YPT's ebook, Youth Ministry is Theological Ministry, is a free download for subscribers. What exactly does it mean to say that we are in the image of God? How should that idea impact how we view things like our identity, our work, sexuality, body image, disability and transgender issues? Hey Friends! This week we discuss the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. We get into misconceptions and the heart of the matter so don't miss this one!=============================
Genesis 1:26 tells us something crucial about human nature: "Then God said, 'Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness.'" What does it mean to be "made in the image of God"? And why does that matter? What difference does it make that you and I and everyone else is made as the image of God? On this episode, Dr. Carmen Imes helps us explore this subject. Dr. Imes is associate professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology (Biola University). She has written several books and her most recent book, Being God's Image, is the topic of this conversation. Hollywood is struggling. Fewer people are going to theaters, but this week saw the opening of two huge movies including Barbie. Can the movie revive Hollywood, or will its social commentary drive more Americans away? Florida's anti-woke policy is now revising how its public schools teach history by saying enslaved people benefited from the skills they learned. What's really behind the move to downplay the evil of slavery? Dr. Carmen Imes is back to discuss her new book “Being God's Image.” She says the Bible has a radical message of human dignity and equality, but Christian communities often unknowingly undermine this ethic.
