Tiila Abbitt loves to create “firsts”, like her self-funded company Aether Beauty (the world's first zero-waste makeup product, winner of Allure’s Best of Beauty Awards for 2021, a pretty big deal). And -- she simply doesn’t compromise. Tiila has proven you don’t have to sacrifice efficacy or payoff to create a clean and natural brand with good intent. On the podcast "Then What?", she joins Lahari Neelapareddy to share how she built a fast growing company on a shoestring budget; why she’s opening up the company to the public; the importance of understanding infrastructure and materials sourcing; and the worst thing a brand can do in trying to become sustainable. Plus, what happened in Tiila’s “Then What” moment, when she faced the reality of the pandemic, with every door of her biggest retail partner closing -- indefinitely. An interview with Tiila Abbitt of Aether BeautyTo ensure you are aligned with your people, ask questions to understand what they are really thinking. Once you understand what and how they are thinking you can get comfortable on where they are headed with their thoughts. If you need to learn how to ask these aligning questions, hire an intern!Founded in 2018 by Tiila Abbitt, a passionate, highly creative product development professional with 11+ years' experience- including the international prestige beauty industry. Tiila has a BFA in sculpture and an MFA in fashion design. She worked in the fashion industry for over 5 years before transitioning to beauty. She is highly passionate for the sustainable beauty product realm. Tiila spent 7 years at Sephora in charge of product development for makeup collaborations and accessories. Her obsession with sustainability lead her to become the lead R+D for sustainable materials while also being on the sustainability leadership council for the retailer. Being a global brand, Tiila quickly learned that in the USA, there are only 11 banned chemicals in color cosmetics while in the European Union, there are over 1300. Because of this, she learned how to formulate color cosmetics with a very large chemical ban list and how to substitute for cleaner alternatives. Tiila has had a long tenure passion for the organic product realm and has been a vegetarian for over 24 years, and also incorporating a plant based diet. Always bringing natural, organic alternatives into her everyday (including learning how to cook organic food at an organic restaurant while in college) she started to look at natural makeup formulation and just found that none of the offerings could truly compete with the efficacy of conventional beauty. The space lacked choice of color and trend, as well as truly sustainable packaging.

In today’s episode, we feature the story of Tiila Abbitt - CEO and founder of AetherBeauty. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us an honest rating on iTunes. Tiila is in her first year of starting her own beauty brand, Aether Beauty, having served for years as an expert product developer at Sephora, the American beauty retailer. Despite a great income and a great role in driving the company’s sustainability initiatives, Tiila needed to do her own thing - to build an entirely ‘sustainable beauty brand’ - which to this point hasn’t really existed in the market. Today, it’s a one-woman brand, but you’re going to astounded to hear how much she’s doing in revenue as well as what she’s had to do to get to that point, along with her full backstory. With all the news about climate change, what woman doesn’t want to reduce her eco footprint? The most logical place to start might just be in the bathroom, given that 120 billion units of packaging are produced in the global cosmetics industry annually. We’re chatting it all out in this episode, alongside Julianne Robicheau, co-owner of Eco + Amour, a sustainable living boutique specializing in self-care and beauty products. We’ve also got Jill’s good friend Stephanie Hicks in the house, who’s sharing tips based on her year of living zero waste (even her upcoming wedding will be completely up-cycled!). Jill and Carlene share their favourite skincare and makeup brands leading the charge in recycling, re-filling and zero waste packaging. They also hat-tip the big beauty brands committing to zero waste manufacturing and next level recycling programs in the year to come, like TerraCycle and its new re-fill delivery pilot project, Loop. It’s all part of winning over a growing generation who bases their beauty buying on their values as much as product performance. Find out our top zero waste beauty tips for substituting out all-too convenient face wipes from your routine, what to do with all of your old nail polish, how to dispose of hair, what to do with mascara wands… and we review Aether Beauty’s new zero waste eyeshadow palettes, developed by a former exec in Sephora’s sustainability program. All this, and you don’t even have to worry about any brow-beating. Mentioned in the episode: Use code MAVENLOVE to save 15% at Aether Beauty Clean Beauty 5 x5 video!: http://bit.ly/clean-foundations If you saw my post on Monday you know that clean beauty/makeup is something that's been on my mind a lot recently. It's been wonderful to see the incredible array of products now available in the clean beauty space, but it's also making it increasingly more confusing. How does one determine what's a quality product from one that isn't? What about sustainability and packaging? That's why I invited the incredible Tiila Abbitt, founder of Aether Beauty on the podcast today to discuss just that: how to make cleaner makeup choices and also support the environment. Tiila started off her career in beauty working at Sephora in their product innovation group. It's no surprise she learned a ton from this experience which she's now brought to her latest venture, Aether Beauty. Aether is not only a cleaner, more sustainable makeup brand, they're also blurring the lines between makeup and spirituality. As I've begun experiencing a spiritual awakening of sorts (more on this soon), I love anyone who is considering spirituality as they develop new products. This is a great conversation for anyone looking to convert their makeup bag to cleaner products and be more intentional about their makeup choices.
