This week on the Design Driven Life, Wendy Yates speaks with Tiila Abbitt. Tiila founded Aether after spending 15+ years as a product development professional- including 7 years at Sephora, where she developed top-performing products that earned Sephora 20+ awards. Tiila developed an expertise in formulating cosmetics that met the EU's strict standards but also offered the efficacy of US conventional brands. She realized that none of the clean formulas could truly compete with the efficacy of conventional beauty.  She was surprised to learn the lack of sustainability & found that the clean beauty space also lacked choice of colors, trends, and most importantly, innovation. Tiila set out to prove that she could not only develop high-performing clean formulas, but she could do so while prioritizing ethics and sustainability. On this episode Wendy and Tiila talk about the importance of staying true to yourself, how innovation can come from wanting more, and the challenges of creating a clean company. An interview with Tiila Abbitt of Aether BeautyTo ensure you are aligned with your people, ask questions to understand what they are really thinking.      Once you understand what and how they are thinking you can get comfortable on where they are headed with their thoughts.   If you need to learn how to ask these aligning questions, hire an intern!Founded in 2018 by Tiila Abbitt, a passionate, highly creative product development professional with 11+ years' experience- including the international prestige beauty industry. Tiila has a BFA in sculpture and an MFA in fashion design. She worked in the fashion industry for over 5 years before transitioning to beauty. She is highly passionate for the sustainable beauty product realm. Tiila spent 7 years at Sephora in charge of product development for makeup collaborations and accessories. Her obsession with sustainability lead her to become the lead R+D for sustainable materials while also being on the sustainability leadership council for the retailer. Being a global brand, Tiila quickly learned that in the USA, there are only 11 banned chemicals in color cosmetics while in the European Union, there are over 1300. Because of this, she learned how to formulate color cosmetics with a very large chemical ban list and how to substitute for cleaner alternatives. Tiila has had a long tenure passion for the organic product realm and has been a vegetarian for over 24 years, and also incorporating a plant based diet. Always bringing natural, organic alternatives into her everyday (including learning how to cook organic food at an organic restaurant while in college) she started to look at natural makeup formulation and just found that none of the offerings could truly compete with the efficacy of conventional beauty. The space lacked choice of color and trend, as well as truly sustainable packaging.

Meet Tiila Abbitt, the founder of Āether Beauty, a zero-waste, vegan, cruelty free, non-toxic, and ethically created makeup brand! From the harmful ingredients found in most commercial cosmetic products to the challenges of running a clean and responsibly sourced makeup brand, Tiila and I cover it all! This is a conversation you don’t want to miss. In today’s episode Tiila and I chat about: The journey that led her to launching a clean beauty brand. How she became Sephora’s Senior Director of Product Development (she was the head of head of the sustainability department for a few years). Her passion for color/color forecasting + how she creates her products (this was super interesting!) Greenwashing in the beauty industry and the overwhelming list of harmful ingredients used throughout the industry. The challenges around defining the term “clean beauty” and why it’s so confusing for consumers to find “clean” products. Her motivation to create a completely recyclable product + the challenges with the recycling industry. What mica is + the heartbreaking reality of child labor used in mica mines. Why not all synthetic ingredients are harmful (i.e. just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s better for you). Her love of Beauty Heroes + defining the term “blue beauty,” a term I had never heard of before. Her entrepreneurial challenges as the sole employee of her business. And so much more! This was such a wonderful, insightful, and inspiring conversation! Happy listening.

To be honest, a lot of it stems from feeling like I'm in a good place with my body and my diet that sometimes knowing less is actually better for me. That being said, this show isn't just about me and I think it's important to jump into topics that I may not implement but could be helpful to other people. So today Dr. Josh Axe (yes - THE Dr. Axe!) is on the show today talking about the keto diet, intermittent fasting and how to tackle inflammation through diet. Fair warning: This episode may be triggering to people with a history of an eating disorder or who may be sensitive to diet talk. Weight-loss is mentioned and using diets to lose weight is a topic of conversation. While I do my best to try to keep this space body positive, I also am not here to edit my guests and I think it's important I keep an open mind with every interview, even if I don't necessarily agree. BUT one of the best parts of not agreeing with someone is also seeing how you can maintain respect for one another and meet each other in the middle.  Some other things we discussed: Who should be doing the keto diet? It's been wonderful to see the incredible array of products now available in the clean beauty space, but it's also making it increasingly more confusing. How does one determine what's a quality product from one that isn't? What about sustainability and packaging? That's why I invited the incredible Tiila Abbitt, founder of Aether Beauty on the podcast today to discuss just that: how to make cleaner makeup choices and also support the environment.  Tiila started off her career in beauty working at Sephora in their product innovation group. It's no surprise she learned a ton from this experience which she's now brought to her latest venture, Aether Beauty. Aether is not only a cleaner, more sustainable makeup brand, they're also blurring the lines between makeup and spirituality. As I've begun experiencing a spiritual awakening of sorts (more on this soon), I love anyone who is considering spirituality as they develop new products.
