This week, Drewby and Yergy head to the Chicago suburb to discuss the case of 5-eayr-old AJ Freund, and adorable little boy who lost his life at the hands of his mother, Joann Cunningham, and his father, Andrew Freund - his mother's former divorce attorney. Both parents were addicted to drugs and lived in squalor, and two of Joann's ex-partners died of drug overdoses. On the evening of April 15th, 2019, AJ tried to hide a pair of underwear after he soiled himself. As punishment, AJ was forced into a cold shower with the water pointed right at his face, and was beaten to death. His autopsy later showed that he died from massive trauma to the skull and brain that was caused by multiple blunt force trauma to the head. His brain was so swollen part of it swelled into the spinal cord, crushing brain tissue. Back on July 19 and July 21, we talked about how the system designed to protect 5-year-old AJ Freund failed him. In April 2019, AJ's parents reported him missing. While the community gathered and searched for the lost child, the authorities discovered the truth - the night before he was reported missing, him mother beat him severely, made him stand in an ice-cold shower for 20 minutes, then she put him in his bed soaking wet. During the night, he went into cardiac arrest and died. His father, who witnessed the violence, took AJ's body to a remote area and buried it before he reported AJ missing. When we covered this case, we talked about how the DCFS workers who claimed the abuse allegations against AJ's parents were unfounded should also be charged with a crime in relation to his death. On April 18, 2019, JoAnn Cunningham and Drew Freund called 911 to report their 5-year-old son, AJ, missing from the family's home in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Days later, police discovered AJ's battered body in a shallow grave, and both JoAnn and Drew were charged with the murder of their little boy.I've told AJ's story in parts over the course of two regular episodes, a few update episodes, and multiple posts on Suffer the Little Children Blog. AJ was the first child I ever featured on both the blog and the podcast, and he holds a special place in my heart. In April of 2019, police in the Chicago Suburb of Crystal Lake were informed of a missing five-year-old boy. According to his parents, he had vanished at some point in the middle of the night. On April 18, 2019, JoAnn Cunningham and Drew Freund of Crystal Lake, Illinois reported their 5-year-old son, AJ, missing. Days later, police discovered AJ’s bludgeoned body in a shallow grave. JoAnn and Drew were arrested and charged in their son’s murder.   Last week, JoAnn Cunningham, who pleaded guilty in her son’s death, was sentenced to a paltry 35 years in prison despite mountains of evidence that she scapegoated, tortured, berated, and abused little AJ right up till the night he died, when she beat him so viciously with a shower head that the swelling of his brain caused his vital functions to cease. JoAnn Cunningham, the mother of 5-year-old, AJ Freund, has pleaded guilty to his murder. AJ Freund was reported missing from his home in Crystal Lake, Illinois, on April 18th, 2019, and his body was found in a shallow grave 6 days later.Suspected robbers, fleeing a jewelry store in Coral Gables, Florida, hijacked a UPS van and led police on a high speed highway chase, which ended in a shootout that left four dead.Finally, a banker stabbed his wife and two young children to death, before turning the knife on himself, in Pleasantville, New York.
