On this Friday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, we recognize and celebrate Cinco de Mayo, which in Spanish means "fifth of May." The holiday originally commemorated the anniversary of Mexico's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla. The smaller, Mexican forces were poorly outfitted and won against the much larger, better equipped French army and boosted morale for the Mexicans. Over the years, ‘Cinco de Mayo' has become a day to celebrate Mexican culture, music, mariachi, dance – baile folklorico, cuisine and heritage around the world. The day became popular in 1980 when many companies, especially beer companies, began promoting the day. Today, 77 WABC Radio is celebrating ‘Cinco de Mayo' with special guest interviews throughout the day on-air! You won't want to miss it! In other news of the day, more protests take place around the city following the subway chokehold death incident, podcast host Joe Rogan speaks out regarding President Joe Biden opting out of debates, James Comer appears on Hannity to say that he's confident that documents implicating President Biden, and five Proud Boys involved in January 6th are convicted. Curtis Sliwa, John Catsimatidis, Brian Kilmeade, Bob Unanue, Rob Astorino, Chef Fernando Deso, Dick Jerardi and Dave Barry join the program on this very special day of programming! Picture this: Utahns wake up to find their beloved adult entertainment site, Pornhub, has gone AWOL, and they have their state legislators to thank for it. I can almost hear the collective sigh of disappointment echoing across the state. State Sen. Todd Weiler, the man behind the legislation, received an earful from an angry Utah man whose dreams of accessing Pornhub were shattered. Weiler's bill, which goes into effect soon, forces porn sites to verify users' ages to keep minors away from adult content. If they don't comply, parents can sue these companies for damages. In response, Pornhub took a bold stand and started blocking access to all Utah users. They even posted a statement (and a SFW video starring adult performer Cherie DeVille) explaining the situation. "Hey Utah, it's not us, it's your elected officials," they essentially said. The adult entertainment giant argues that demanding ID cards for age verification isn't the most effective solution. It could actually put children and users' privacy at risk. Instead, Pornhub suggests using device-based verification for a safer, more private experience. But until a better solution comes along, Utahns are left out in the cold as Pornhub disables access statewide. To rub salt in the wound, the company urges Utah residents to contact their representatives and demand better age verification methods. Good luck with that, folks! It's worth noting that Utah isn't the only state to impose age verification laws. Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi have similar legislation, with ten other states considering proposals. So, what does this mean for the future of adult entertainment in the US? In a bizarre twist, Pornhub's parent company, MindGeek, developed AgeID, one of Europe's leading age verification applications. That's right – the same company that's blocking Utahns has a solution to the problem in their back pocket. Meanwhile, on Reddit, users are sharing tips on using VPNs to bypass the ban, while others are poking fun at Utah's so-called "small government" philosophy. It's hard not to see the irony in the situation. At the end of the day, Utahns are left scrambling for a fix while Pornhub remains stubbornly out of reach. Will the state find a solution to this age verification conundrum? Only time will tell. Until then, Utah residents will have to find other ways to, uh, entertain themselves. --- Join our Patreon: https://patreon.com/whatarewedoing -- Help Us Make Money: ✅ REPURPOSE YOUR VIDEOS - Upload to 1 service & we'll handle the rest. This week we see if there are any wines that can stand up to Mexican food. As with all our episodes like this, we ordered a lot of traditional Mexican and TexMex dishes that included common ingredients. Then we paired up wines that are most commonly recommended, plus a few that I think may be good options that most people don't talk about. Photo credit: Canva As we always do, we went through lots of wine and food combos and some really nasty pairings to get the results. True to form, conventional wisdom mostly failed us and what worked really well sort of surprised us. Although we all have different preferences and palates, this show may give you an idea of what works with Mexican and the reasons why. I always find it particularly interesting to sit down and test these recommended pairings because often I think the people recommending them are pairing based on theory, rather than on reality. Take a listen, test it out, see for yourself. Full show notes are now exclusively available on Patreon! Does history have a border? That is the question at the heart of Cinco de Mayo, May 5th, a holiday that symbolizes Mexico's fight for autonomy, even as it's come to be associated with sales and cervezas and margaritas in the U.S. Cinco de Mayo is part of a much deeper story of two nations — Mexico and the U.S. — trying to define themselves at a time when old empires were crumbling and borders were in flux. A story that culminated in a revolution in Mexico that was at the forefront of a worldwide movement against predatory capitalism and foreign domination. So in this episode, we're going back to the first Cinco de Mayo and exploring how it helped shape the future on both sides of the border.
