What a terrific show I've got for you this week on BEHIND THE LENS as I get to introduce you to a wonderful British filmmaker, writer/director JOHN MICHAEL KENNEDY, who makes his narrative feature directorial debut with the mystery thriller, AN ENEMY WITHIN. Not only is this John's narrative feature directorial debut, but as I found out, this interview that you are about to hear was his very first interview, something I found surprising given the excellence of his short films. So this is a real treat for all of you – and for me. There is something deliciously venomous pulsing through AN ENEMY WITHIN, writer-director John Michael Kennedy's tightly coiled debut narrative feature. Part Gothic chamber thriller, part psychological standoff, part family bloodsport, Kennedy constructs a sharply staged mystery where inherited privilege, buried resentment, emotional insecurity, and self-delusion become loaded weapons aimed squarely at everyone trapped inside a sprawling English estate. And the beauty of Kennedy's film lies in the fact that virtually nobody inside that house deserves our trust. Written & Directed By John Michael Kennedy, AN ENEMY WITHIN stars William Moseley, Patrick Baladi, Kim Spearman, Alexander Lincoln, Tristan Gemmill, Kate Isset, Toyin Omari-Kinch, Frances Wilding, Mollie Dorman, and Harrison Daniels. The film's cinematographer is Lorenzo Levrini, the editor is Gustav Lindquist, and the composer is Caleb Blood. A couple of other films I briefly want to mention to you today that are absolute "Must See" films. First is THE SHEEP DETECTIVES, which is a tale that follows George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), a shepherd who loves to read murder mysteries to his sheep, never suspecting that they can understand him. When George is found dead under mysterious circumstances, the sheep decide to solve the crime themselves, even if it means leaving their meadow for the first time and facing the fact that the human world isn't as simple as it appears in books. The other film you must see, also based on a novel, is REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES on Netflix, starring Sally Field as an older widow named Tova, whose life is changed by a friendship with a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus, and Cameron, a new-in-town employee looking for his father, played by Lewis Pullman. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

The letters of 2 & 3 John are so short that we often pass them over. But they are gems. In this message, Michael Bouterse, director of Thrive Harbor, unpacks how these two "little letters" warn us of two interlocking dangers that can bring down a church: bad doctrine and bad character. Often we're on guard against one of these more than the other—but John says we'll get off track unless we avoid both. Scripture passages cited (or alluded to) in this message include 2 & 3 John; Mark 12:28-31; Matthew 23:23-24; Titus 1:9; Romans 14:1, 6, 13; and Philippians 1:9-10.Note: We apologize that due to a technical error the first few minutes of this message are not included.

John-Michael Keyes, founder of the I Love You Guys Foundation, joins Mike Spear to share how the devastating loss of his 16-year-old daughter Emily during a 2006 school hostage crisis became the catalyst for a national movement that has reshaped how schools, first responders, and communities prepare for and respond to crises. Through the development of the Standard Response Protocol and Standard Reunification Method—now used in over 60,000 schools, districts, and agencies worldwide—John-Michael reveals how simple, plain-language frameworks have replaced the patchwork of confusing codes and inconsistent procedures that once defined school safety, while fostering unprecedented collaboration between educators, law enforcement, emergency managers, and families who might otherwise never sit at the same table. The conversation explores the Foundation's evolution from a small memorial fund to a lean, mission-driven organization with a sustainable fee-for-service model, its trauma-informed approach to preparedness, and its ambitious next chapter: Bold Impact, a new social impact framework designed to formalize the cross-sector community resilience that has long been the "side effect" of their work.

So, why did the province scrap its climate targets when it's on the cusp of a nuclear boom? JMM, Émilie, and Sabrina dig into the larger, legal context. Now that the KJV version of the bible is not the only version sanctioned by the LDS church, this opens the door to dropping the Shakespearean language of the Book of Mormon too. Many of us wonder if we will see a new version of The Book of Mormon soon. Other versions of The Book of Mormon already exist and on this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by the guy behind a unique interpretation of the Book of Mormon that's making everyone spit out their coffee. Working from a suggestion from a Reddit post by Lucifers_Lantern, John-Michael Holahan reimagined the Book of Mormon by replacing "And it came to pass" with "I sh** you not!" I dare you to read these passages and not laugh out loud! John-Michael tells us more about how the idea originated and his process to create this very creative modernized version of the Book of Mormon. Also a shout out to Lucifers_Lantern on Reddit for making the suggestion! This episode originally aired in March 2024. Happy New Year! The perfect way to end the year is with director John-Michael, or JM, Powell, and his genre thriller, VIOLENT ENDS (2025). In this episode, JM and I discuss the astonishingly moody cinematography -- the deer scene and a shootout will stay with you way after the film; his journey through film school and a grant that made this film possible, and his steady and sure approach to indie filmmaking. And let me add: VIOLENT ENDS is a perfect New Year's Eve film. Let the shootouts remain on the screen, grab a bottle of champagne, and welcome in the New Year with filmmaker JM Powell. In this episode, JM and I talk about:the incredible moody setting of VIOLENT ENDS and how setting portends to great filmmaking;how he got his start in filmmaking;whether you should go to film school;the story behind his first feature, THE SEND-OFF (2022);why he loves the Calgary International Film Festival;how he managed fatherhood and his advice for people having kids in the indie film space;the grant that made VIOLENT ENDS possible and his views on using film to shoot it (which was made impossible by a very mundane reason!);what people should expect to watch with VIOLENT ENDS;the moody cinematography, including whether the deer was real and more about the insane shootout scene near the end;how to handle both fantastic and negative reviews as a filmmaker;the vote of great actors on a particular project;what's next for him.JM's Indie Film Highlights: THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY (2023) dir. by Francis Galluppi; TOUCH ME (2025) dir. by Addison HeimannMemorable Quotes:"There's so many movies that take place in New York, but the good movies feel specific to that writer and that filmmaker.""I went to school in Dallas Fort Worth, so I think a lot of the people aspire to do like commercial work in Dallas.""I'm very much that personality where I'm...give me a problem and I'll figure out how to solve it.""Anywhere you can find yourself where you are orbiting and brushing up against story because story is everything.""You can create your own AFI community on YouTube.""In some ways, I think, micro budget, independent distribution is obsolete.""What matters to me more than shooting on film is capturing a good story.""I don't think most people are consuming film criticism. I think most film criticism, especially for cinephiles now lives on like Letterboxd...Rotten Tomatoes obviously, too, is a valuable asset. But these platforms cater to clickbait headlines and taglines that for better or worse...that has influenced our cinema discourse and our film criticism."Links:Follow JM On InstagramWatch VIOLENT ENDSSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

Director John-Michael Powell joins No Film School to talk about his gritty Southern crime thriller Violent Ends, which hits theaters October 31. Powell shares the winding journey that led to the film's production—from being dropped from a college art program, to cutting indie films that made it to festivals like Sundance and SXSW, to editing the Emmy-winning Netflix series American Manhunt. Remarkably, he crafted a feature starring Billy Magnussen and Alexandra Shipp—without agents, managers, or festival support. This episode offers a raw, inspiring, and tactical look at building a career from the ground up, how to forge meaningful creative collaborations, and why the cavalry might never come. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guest John-Michael Powell discuss… How Powell transitioned from music and graphic design to filmmaking Why getting cut from a college program helped shape his resilience The long road from writing Violent Ends in 2013 to securing funding a decade later The strategy behind securing name actors without traditional representation How he used relationships and resourcefulness to get a bidding war What filmmakers should know about real-money offers and escrow Why adaptability and microbudget thinking still matters—on any scale How not having representation can actually work in your favor Building a production company (Midnight Road) and what's coming next Memorable Quotes: "I got cut. I got the axe." "The most powerful tool you have as a filmmaker is your feet." "I took out 'editor' and put in just 'director and writer.'" "Violent Ends did not get accepted to any festivals… and we sold it to IFC." How do you define your voice as a director? John-Michael Powell https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3119508/ talks about his new film "Violent Ends" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6902560 and the career journey that brought it to theaters. When the entire faculty of his art college told him to give up on becoming an artist, John-Michael moved to Los Angeles. He landed his first job at Bunim-Murray Productions, spending nights watching VHS tapes of "The Real World" and transcribing every line of dialogue onto scraps of paper. By day, he lived in a garage in the Valley off the 405 and close to the edge of moving back home. The better he became at editing TV segments with paper scraps thumb-tacked to a corkboard, the faster he spiraled towards mastering useless skills and boring stories about the way things were. But John-Michael had a knack for finding building blocks in any situation. Even alone, the work fueled him. But he still didn't yet know why that mattered to him.Soon things started taking shape: a Sundance award, editing a documentary on the Boston Marathon bombers, learning comedic timing from legend Jerry Zucker, and eventually an Emmy. Suddenly, he began seeing how the trajectory he was on, was nothing he imagined growing up in Arkansas.Listen as John-Michael shares about his career. Why Arkansas is a big part. And how it's all about constant discovery. You're really going to enjoy seeing and feeling why he's in love with building his voice as a director and uncovering the secrets that await. The Friends of History Debating Society: Setting, Immediate Events, and Media Critique The Friends of History Debating Society convenes with Gaius (also known as John Batchelor) hosting from Londinium, specifically a wine bar he favors. Michael Vlahos participates from the "Edge of the Empire." In his persona as Germanicus, Michael Vlahos is on a mission in Dalmatia, a "slightly untamed" region that serves as "connecting tissue" between the Roman Empire's eastern and western halves, visiting fortified places like Ragusa and planning a trip to Spalato. As Dramaticus, Michael Vlahos is "traveling on the road" and is reminded by Gaius to "walk with Centurions" for protection from potentially "obsequious and violent" locals. The society's purpose is to review weekly events through a "Roman eye," with participants seeing themselves as "Roman citizens" attempting to understand and potentially "help" the 21st century, while also observing. Gaius reports on a recent visit by Michael Vlahos (in his Dramaticus persona) to the "Imperial Court," or President Trump's White House, during the sad news of Mr. Kirk'sdeath. Despite this somber event, the overall atmosphere in the Oval Office was described as "busy, positive, energetic, attractive, and working perfectly," reminiscent of Augustus's imperial court. Gaius notes that the mainstream media, committed to "hurting Trump," unanimously portrays him as a "demon," "evil force," or "another Hitler," with his followers characterized as "Nazis" or "white supremacists." This rhetoric, according to Michael Vlahos, contributed to events like Mr. Kirk's assassination. Both Gaius and Michael Vlahos find this equating of speech with violence "immature and ignorant," revealing a lack of historical understanding among those in the "blue" faction.
