Back in 2021, both episode 49 and minisode #3 featured the story of 20-month-old Quortney Kley. On February 25, 1997, Quortney was sexually abused and murdered by her mom's boyfriend, Cayce Williams. It took nine years for the legal case to end with Williams accepting a plea agreement in 2006, and he was released in 2021 after spending only 24 years behind bars for the violent sexual assault and murder of a toddler. In this episode, you'll hear my recent conversation with Quortney's mom, Gretta Morgan, who has some disturbing updates for us about Quortney's killer and some shocking revelations about Illinois' sex offender registry. Quortney's case is already overwhelming in its injustice, but today's episode will boggle your mind. #DemandChangeILLinks related to this episode:• Episode 49: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/episode-49-quortney-kley--44665620 • Minisode 3: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/minisode-3-quortney-kley-update--44665601• CBS2 news piece: https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/54-sex-offenders-living-in-one-englewood-building/#• Cayce Williams on the ISP sex offender registry: https://isp.illinois.gov/Sor/Details/X06B1162 • Gretta's recent interview with freelance journalist Sarah Boyles: https://www.facebook.com/SuicidePainter/photos/tw-quortney-kley-was-a-happy-funny-and-smart-20-month-old-baby-when-cayce-willia/1509718230371103/?_rdr Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. In the last episode, I told you the story of ten-year-old Dakota Levi Stevens, a smart, creative, charming kid who was dealt a bad hand in life and died at the hands of a foster mother and longtime family friend. Jennifer Wilson is now serving a regrettably short sentence in the Indiana prison system for crushing 91-pound Levi to death with her 341-pound body weight. In this episode, you'll hear my conversation with three of the people who loved Levi the most: Grandma Melissa Mahler; Aunt Ana Parrish; and Uncle Alex Parrish. Levi's maternal family members told me about their family's constant attempts to rescue Levi from the foster care system; their heartache at Levi's bright light being snuffed out by someone they thought they could trust; and their efforts to make changes to help other kids like Levi. This is part two of the heart-wrenching story of Dakota Levi Stevens.Honoring Dakota Levi Stevens on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3953712874915112/ Change.org petition to remove Robert Wilson as middle school principal: https://www.change.org/p/demand-the-removal-of-principal-robert-wilson-from-lake-ridge-new-tech-middle-school Change.org petition to hold DCS accountable for failing Indiana's vulnerable children: https://www.change.org/p/hold-the-department-of-children-and-family-services-accountable-for-foster-child-deaths Levi's Law petition: https://www.change.org/p/let-s-get-levi-s-law-started?recruiter=295397157&recruited_by_id=d285ea50-f8dd-11e4-8573-5be613050eb0 Lake County Candlelight Vigil for Victims of Child Abuse (April 30): https://www.facebook.com/share/16RPD7VvE4/ Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. During those three days, Bella went from a happy, bubbly baby to alternately crying hysterically and becoming quiet and withdrawn. Then her parents noticed a distinctive pinching bruise on Bella's thigh. An investigation turned up hours of CCTV footage from inside the daycare, showing three workers abusing the baby, including pinching, shoving, crushing, slapping, shaking, and smothering her.Bella's parents, JD and Kaitlin Kuykendall, assumed their baby's abusers would immediately face consequences, but instead, officials seemed hell-bent on sweeping the incident under the rug. The daycare workers responsible remained working at the CDC for months. Only when Bella's parents went public with her story were any charges pressed, and those were woefully inadequate. In this episode, you'll hear my conversation with Kaitlin Kuykendall about what Bella endured, how it continues to affect her to this day, and why Kaitlin and her husband went public with her story. This is the inspiring story of Operation Mei Mei.Operation Mei Mei on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61573058332219Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. Raylee's death was infuriatingly preventable if only CPS and the family court judge hadn't ignored countless abuse complaints from Raylee's mom and school staff. In this episode, we'll go over the results of Raylee's autopsy and the shocking number of medications she was prescribed. I'll talk about how and why Marty Browning Jr., Julie Titchenell, and Sherie Titchenell put just Raylee, one of four kids in the home, through years of abuse and neglect. I'll go through the shocking statements one of Julie's children made to a counselor, cementing the three adults' criminal charges. Finally, I'll also discuss proposed legislation that would protect many homeschooled kids from abuse and why, almost four years after its proposal, it still hasn't been passed by the West Virginia State Senate. This is part two of the harrowing story of Raylee Browning.Links discussed in this episode:The Coalition for Responsible Home Education (CRHE): https://responsiblehomeschooling.org Homeschooling's Invisible Children summary of 2024 findings: https://www.hsinvisiblechildren.org/findings/ Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. Although she was covered with injuries from head to toe, her cause of death was a septic infection from untreated pneumonia. The three adults in the home—Raylee's father, his girlfriend, and her sister—were charged in her death. That episode barely scratched the surface. Now, I'm retelling Raylee's full story with the help of her mom, Janice Wriston, who fought for Raylee's entire eight years to protect her daughter from the girl's own father, Marty Browning Jr. The way the press told the story, Marty was a negligent father who merely failed to protect his daughter. The truth about Marty is far darker than that. This is the story of a sweet, loving little girl whose mom called her Sunshine. It's also a story about the horrific abuse Marty inflicted on first Janice and then Raylee, and how he managed to become entwined with a pair of sisters just as narcissistic and abusive as himself, ultimately leading to his only child's painful and unnecessary death. This is part one of the harrowing story of Raylee Browning.Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. From time to time, instead of covering an individual child's story, I tackle a broader topic, such as my past episodes about hot car deaths and medical child abuse. While the topic of today's episode doesn't necessarily intersect with that of child abuse and neglect, it definitely intersects with this podcast's purpose: to protect children. For this episode, I spoke with Christi Brown, the executive director of the Judah Brown Project. Christi is a mom who always thought she was protecting her kids from the dangers of water until her three-year-old son, Judah, died in 2016 from an accidental drowning that happened in the blink of an eye. When Indianapolis police responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive child on April 9, 2024, they couldn't have guessed the horrific circumstances of the victim's life and death. 5-year-old Kinsleigh Welty, who weighed only 21 pounds, was clearly malnourished. She had a bruise on her face and fecal matter on her body and matted into her hair, which was crawling with lice. Kinsleigh was pronounced dead at Riley Hospital for Children the same day. This is the story of yet another child failed by Indiana's child welfare system. It's also the story of yet another case of reunification gone wrong and a child who thrived in the care of others, only to die at the hands of a biological parent. Also in this episode, you'll hear from Kinsleigh's great-aunt, Carrie Hogan, who, along with many others, demands change from Indiana's Department of Child Services. This is the gut-wrenching story of Kinsleigh Welty.Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. The National Children's Alliance (or NCA) is a Washington, D.C.-based network of almost 1,000 Children's Advocacy Centers (or CACs) across the United States. These centers offer crucial services to children affected by abuse, providing them with a safe space to share their stories and access a diverse team of professionals, from health practitioners to law enforcement. CACs have trained nearly 1.6 million people in child abuse prevention, and last year alone, CACs served over 380,000 children. But with this year's $600,000 cut to the Victims of Crime Act funding, CACs now face dire challenges. In this episode, you'll hear my conversation with Teresa Huizar, CEO of the NCA, to discuss what these cuts mean for CACs and the vulnerable children who rely on them. We explore how these centers operate, the impact of the funding loss, and various child abuse-related topics. On the evening of May 5, 1993, three eight-year-old boys—Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers—went missing in West Memphis, Arkansas. The next day, in a nearby wooded area, the boys were found brutally murdered, bound, and submerged in a drainage ditch. The horrific nature of the crime shocked the community, and police quickly arrested three local teenagers—Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley—based on a coerced false confession, no solid evidence, and Satanic panic. This is the story of three innocent children whose lives were stolen in an unspeakable act of violence. It's also the story of three wrongfully convicted teenagers who spent 18 years in prison, one of them on death row, for a crime they didn't commit—the victims of a flawed justice system and a community in the grip of fear.In today's episode, I'm honored to discuss a case that has gripped me for many years with the one man who has been involved since the beginning: Jessie Misskelley's original defense attorney, case advocate, and author of the recent book, A Harvest of Innocence: Judge Dan Stidham. This is our discussion about his book and the tragic case of the West Memphis Three.A Harvest of Innocence by Dan Stidham on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Harvest-Innocence-Untold-Memphis-Murder/dp/B0CMYZ2BT7 Judge Stidham's website: https://www.danstidham.com Email Judge Stidham with information about the case: harvestofinnocence@outlook.comTruth & Justice with Bob Ruff podcast: https://www.truthandjusticepod.com Paradise Lost documentary series: https://www.max.com/shows/paradise-lost/d509d74f-3c01-4367-9a42-a3aece5de4c9 The Forgotten West Memphis Three docuseries: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12092348/ West of Memphis documentary: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2130321/ Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. How could something like this happen? In this episode, you'll hear my conversation with Jonathan's father, Michael Carey, who has spent the last 17 years pushing for a massive overhaul of New York State's mental health system as well as legislature to help protect others with developmental disabilities. This is part three of the mind-boggling story of Jonathan Carey.Form letter to print and send: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VogzAAW9Kh1by2-IDOgN94ZI73-BxyxZ/view?usp=sharing “Prevalence of Violence”: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/prevalence-of-violenceArticle about sexual predator Stephen DeProspero: https://www.ydr.com/story/news/crime/2017/02/20/predators-dream-ny-pays-3m-family-molested-boy/98154714/ Article about whistleblower Jeffrey Monsour: https://www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com/news/local-news/2017/11/opwdd-whistleblower-asks-workers-to-speak-up/ “Jane Lynch” affidavit (“coherent oversight scheme”): https://drive.google.com/file/d/17vYWA2DY_HqwIluGcyyadExmDqckjRHh/view?usp=sharing Jonathan's Law: http://jonathanslaw.com Jonathan Carey Foundation on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JonathanCareyFoundation New York Times Abused and Used series: https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/interactive/nyregion/abused-and-used-series-page.htmlSpotlight movie (2015): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1895587/ Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. In the last episode, I told you the story of Jonathan Carey, a non-verbal, autistic boy whose parents had no choice but to send him to a second residential program after he suffered abuse and torture at the first one he attended. At age 13, Jonathan was restrained and suffocated to death by Developmental Aide Edwin Tirado. In this episode, I'll continue Jonathan's story where I left off, and I'll tell you about the Careys' continued fight to change the system that tragically took their son from them. This is the story of how a boy's horrific, preventable death has triggered some—but not enough—changes in the way New York State cares for people with developmental disabilities. This is part two of the mind-boggling story of Jonathan Carey.Jonathan's Law: http://jonathanslaw.comJonathan Carey Foundation on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JonathanCareyFoundationNew York Times Abused and Used series: https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/interactive/nyregion/abused-and-used-series-page.html Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. Jonathan Carey was autistic and nonverbal. Because he needed more care than they could provide in their home, when Jonathan was nine, his parents sent him to a highly recommended residential program at the Anderson School in Staatsburg, New York, where young Jonathan was starved, isolated, and physically abused. Due to the PTSD Jonathan suffered from the abuse, he had difficulties at home, and the Careys had no choice but to find another residential placement for him. In 2005, Jonathan began attending the residential program for adolescents at the well-regarded O.D. Heck Developmental Center in Niskayuna, New York. On February 15, 2007, 13-year-old Jonathan died at the hands of an O.D. Heck employee, and his father, Michael Carey, began his mission to uncover the rampant corruption in New York state's care system for the developmentally disabled. This is part one of the mind-boggling story of Jonathan Carey. My Magic Mind link | https://magicmind.com/BYLAINE20 (use code BYLAINE20 at checkout)Willowbrook: The Last Great Disgrace | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRK0LO-9ZYk Unforgotten: 25 Years After Willowbrook | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNLyKW8fCNg The Path Forward: Remembering Willowbrook (2023) | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev80qEtp2u4  Interoffice memo about abuse at the Anderson School | http://www.autismschoolabuse.com/Abuse_at_Anderson_School.html Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com.By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. In 2003, an East Texas couple adopted three young Russian children. Over the years, there were countless red flags for child abuse, especially against the oldest child, Alexey, who began running away when he was 12. He ended up on the doorstep of the Roosevelt House, an emergency shelter, assessment center, and residential care facility for children removed from abusive situations, usually by CPS. The home's founder, Diane Black, had no idea that her battle to save Alexey and his sisters, Anastasia and Svetlana, would upend life as she knew it.Diane detailed the story of Alexey, his sisters, the Roosevelt House, and the egregious systemic failure of the Texas child protection system in a book called Dead Dog Road: A True Story Into the Dark World of an Abused Child. Then, you'll hear me talk with two of Arabella's maternal aunts, Samantha Delcamp's sisters, Mandy Kegler and Sarah Delcamp, two amazingly strong women who've endured the death of their beloved niece, the imprisonment of their sister, and the cruelty of the public with a great deal of grace. This is part 3 of the complex, tragic story of Arabella Parker, retold.Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. Please help me devote myself to the podcast full-time to keep the weekly episodes coming! In episodes 35 and 36, back in late 2020, I told you the story of 9-month-old Jacob Landin, a tiny boy with a big laugh and an even bigger personality. Jacob died in April 1987 from a severe traumatic brain injury. When the injury occurred, he was in the care of his mom's boyfriend, Steven Chavez, who told several different stories to Brenda Landin, medical professionals, and investigators. Despite being the only suspect, failing a polygraph, and reportedly confessing to police, Steven was never prosecuted for Jacob's murder, and he went on to abuse and terrorize Jacob's mom and brother for years afterward. For this bonus episode, I spoke again with Eric Carter-Landin, Jacob's big brother and the host of the True Consequences podcast. We discussed Eric and Brenda's efforts to get justice for Jacob, the New Mexico Attorney General's refusal to treat Jacob and his family with the respect they deserve, why they finally decided to name Steven after all these years, and how we can help by getting on board with the current 10 Days of Jacob campaign.Attorney General “Contact Us” form: https://nmdoj.gov/contact-us New Mexico Department of JusticeOffice of the Attorney General, Raúl Torrez201 3rd St. NWAlbuquerque, NM 87102(505) 490-4060 Episode 35: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/re-release-episode-35-jacob-landin-part-1--47429959Episode 36: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/re-release-episode-36-jacob-landin-part-2--47429996 True Consequences - NM Forgotten Child - Jacob Jeremiah Landin, part 1: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/nm-forgotten-child-jacob-jeremiah-landin--25919867Part 2: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/nm-forgotten-child-jacob-jeremiah-landin-part-2--26727541Part 3: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/nm-forgotten-child-jacob-jeremiah-landin-part-3--25919870True Consequences - A Brother's Love: Justice for Jacob Landin: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/a-brother-s-love-justice-for-jacob-landin--59154357True Consequences - A Family's Love: Justice for Jacob: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/a-family-s-love-justice-for-jacob--59239092 Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. Please help me devote myself to the podcast full-time to keep the weekly episodes coming! Four years ago, in episodes 16 and 17, I told you the tragic story of 3-year-old Arabella Parker. Because that was so early in my podcasting journey, I'm not satisfied with my coverage of her story, so I'm revisiting it in an all-new, comprehensive re-telling as I've never told it before: with the help of her family and others. On October 10, 2019, Arabella reportedly suffered a seizure at her home in Trevorton, Pennsylvania. At the hospital, doctors immediately suspected child abuse based on her multitude of injuries, which included a head injury so severe that they had to remove part of Arabella's brain. Her mother's boyfriend, Jahrid Burgess, was arrested almost immediately. After her mother, Samantha Delcamp, gave multiple conflicting statements to police, to reporters, and even on The Steve Wilkos Show, Samantha was also arrested. When the tiny, beloved red-haired girl died after six weeks on life support, Jahrid and Samantha's charges were upgraded to homicide. This is part one of the complex, tragic story of Arabella Parker, retold. Thanks to Magic Mind for sponsoring the show! On February 17, 2020, police in Fort Myers, Florida responded to a horrific single-vehicle accident in which a minivan carrying two women and a three-year-old girl veered off the road, hit several palm trees, and flipped over. The little girl, Serenity Robinson, was not in a car seat and was unrestrained. Her mother, Leslie Joe Zeagler, was found to be impaired by multiple controlled substances and survived with minor injuries. Serenity was not so lucky.Leslie was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Later, Fort Myers police officer Tyler Williams was also charged after prosecutors learned he had pulled Leslie over a month earlier, found illegal drugs in the van, and let her go because he didn't feel like calling DCF that morning. Even though this officer's intervention likely would have saved Serenity's life, a judge dismissed the charges, and the only person prosecuted was her mother. In this episode, you'll also hear my conversation with Serenity's father, Randy Robinson, who hasn't given up on getting justice for his baby girl. On April 19, 1973, Joan was delivering Girl Scout cookies when her neighbor, Joseph McGowan, a high school science teacher, lured her into his basement, sexually assaulted her, and brutally beat and strangled the helpless little girl. McGowan pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to life in the New Jersey prison system with the possibility of parole after 14 years. In this episode, I'll dig deep into McGowan's various psychological evaluations and his interview with famed FBI profiler John Douglas, trying to reconcile the mild-mannered man McGowan appeared to be with the heinous rapist and murderer he became on Holy Thursday, 1973. Also in this episode, you'll hear my conversation with Joan's mother, Rosemarie D'Alessandro, who has spent decades advocating for children and victims' families in her beloved daughter's name. This is part 2 of the horrifying but incredibly inspiring story of Joan D'Alessandro. Thanks to Magic Mind for sponsoring the show! On April 19, 1973, seven-year-old Joan D'Alessandro left her family's home in Hillsdale, New Jersey to deliver her last two boxes of Girl Scout cookies. She never returned. After a massive search and an intensive investigation, police zeroed in on the family's neighbor, 27-year-old high school science teacher Joseph McGowan, who soon confessed that he had sexually abused and murdered Joan before dumping her body in Harriman State Park, just over the border in New York State. For decades, Joan's mother, Rosemarie D'Alessandro, has led a charge to change laws, both state and federal, to better protect victims' families. She has also created a nonprofit foundation focusing on child safety and programs for underprivileged youth. It is my great honor to help Rosemarie tell the story of her beautiful daughter, Joan, and how her memory has inspired decades of important work. This is part 1 of the horrifying but incredibly inspiring story of Joan D'Alessandro.Joan's Joy website: https://joansjoy.orgRosemarie D'Alessandro's book, The Message of Light Amid Letters of Darkness: https://www.amazon.com/Message-Light-Amid-Letters-Darkness-ebook/dp/B0CQRNWHXV/Joan's Joy Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/joansjoypage/The Killer Across the Table by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker: https://www.amazon.com/Killer-Across-Table-Unlocking-Mindhunter-ebook/dp/B07G76Q6BG/Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodYou can also follow the podcast on:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpodVisit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com.Please help make the show my full-time gig to keep the weekly episodes coming! **This episode was originally released in June of 2021. I am re-releasing it due to the recent arrest of Lisa Jo Vanderlinden, the woman who spent less than a year in jail for Lucas's murder, on charges of abusing another child.**In 2017, Lucas Call and his baby sister were removed from their biological mother's custody, in part because she had a learning disability and was unjustly deemed an unfit mother. They were placed in the care of a woman who had previously fostered upwards of 40 children. She was also a trained nurse who worked with the county government's child abuse investigation team. Sixteen months later, in August of 2018, that woman called 911, reporting 2-year-old Lucas was unresponsive. After Lucas's death was deemed a homicide caused by blunt force trauma, his foster mother, Lisa Jo Vanderlinden, was charged with his murder. After accepting a plea agreement, Lisa, who claimed to accept responsibility for Lucas's death but never confessed to causing his injuries, received a sentence so shockingly inadequate that many have called for the judge's removal from his position. In this episode, I'll tell you Lucas's story, and you'll also hear my interview with Lucas's great-grandma, Peggy Thompson, who shared with me her anger over the injustice of Lucas's case, as well as some of her fondest memories of this sweet little boy. This is the infuriating story of Lucas Call. As a child, Antonia Deignan believed that her father's nighttime visits to her bedroom showed the special love he had for her. Still, some part of her knew that what he was doing to her was wrong. She began to create fantasy worlds in her mind to escape. As Tuni grew up, she traded her fantasies for dancing, but her inner turmoil also manifested in self-destructive ways. After she suffered a serious bike accident that forced her to face the demons from her past, Tuni finally began to work through her trauma by writing a hauntingly beautiful memoir about her experiences. For today's episode, I spoke with Tuni about her book, Underwater Daughter: A Memoir of Survival and Healing, which delves into the way childhood trauma affects every part of a person's life going forward. On September 18, 2014, four-year-old Serenity Rabbit arrived at the hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, emaciated and suffering from a catastrophic head injury, various bruises and abrasions, and hypothermia. Serenity was under the kinship care of her great-aunt and uncle, Brenda and Clyde Rabbit, whose own eight children also lived in their home. For a year and a half, Serenity's mother, Ashley Rabbit, had begged anyone who would listen to help save her children, who she believed were being abused and neglected. No one listened until it was too late. This is the story of a young, indigenous Canadian mother whose children never should have been taken from her and the child welfare agency that was so eager to close the case that they ignored the many obvious red flags pointing to abuse and neglect. Since I started making this podcast, I've told the stories of a number of children that have involved the failures of the family court system. So many names pop into my head when I think about it: Thomas Valva. Nakota Kelly. Averylee Hobbs. James Biel. Corey Micciolo. Since 2008, over 900 American children have died at the hands of a parent or guardian after involvement with the family court system, which punishes parents – especially mothers – for reporting domestic or child abuse.Ohio mom Sara Moore, who lost custody of both of her boys for that exact reason, has had enough. Earlier this year, Sara pledged to walk a total of 936 miles from Columbus to the White House and back, one mile for each of the 936 who lost their lives due to mistakes made by the family court system. This is the story of an embattled mother who will never stop fighting for her children and the quest she's undertaken to draw attention to the epidemic of family court-related child deaths in this country. This is the inspiring story of 936 Miles for Mercy.Links discussed in this episode: Angels' Voices Silenced No More: https://angelsvoicesnm.org Protect Kids from Family Court: https://www.facebook.com/events/s/protect-kids-from-family-court/1539696220169930/ Sara's GoFundMe campaign: https://www.gofundme.com/f/protect-kids-from-family-court-936milesformercy Center for Judicial Excellence: https://centerforjudicialexcellence.org/ The Saunders study: https://barrygoldstein.net/component/tags/tag/the-saunders-studyUN Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem's United Nations (UN) report on custody and violence against women and children: https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2023/06/urgent-reforms-needed-protect-women-and-children-violence-custody-battles-un The Meier study: https://xyonline.net/sites/xyonline.net/files/2020-05/Meier%2C%20U.S.%20child%20custody%20outcomes%20in%20cases%20involving%20parental%20alienation%20and%20abuse%20allegations%202020.pdf CDC page on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/aces/index.html Avett Ray on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2GRjyu6I8E355bDOvv6h8h?si=WhfBBI1WTUqw-2UoRbvE9Q Avett Ray on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEFFl4jVhSQLx-r-08kYtng Avett Ray on Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/avett-ray/1661435060 Avett Ray on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/avettray/ Avett Ray on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/avettray/ This episode is brought to you by Factor.
