On today's episode, Jack is joined by veterans and entrepreneurs, Scott Neil and Mark Nutsch. Mark Nutsch served in the Army as a Special Forces officer. Scott Neil is a retired Green Beret Master Sergeant. Following the attacks of 9/11, they deployed to Afghanistan where their mission led them to traverse the rugged terrain by horseback. Their story was immortalized in the film 12 Strong. Scott and Mark are also two of the co-founders of American Freedom Distillery, the makers of award-winning Horse Soldier Bourbon. Following a storied career in Special Forces, Scott Neil went on to work with the Green Beret Foundation, developing and launching a transition and resiliency program for veterans called The Next Ridgeline. Scott continues to champion for veterans via senior advisory positions with the Veterans Affairs Committees and the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Mark is the author of the new book, Swords of Lightning: Green Beret Horse Soldiers and America's Response to 9/11. Just days after the 9/11 attacks, several teams of Green Berets were inserted into Afghanistan to liberate the region from the Taliban in a mission known as Task Force Dagger. One of those teams, Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) 595, had to rely on horses instead of trucks and tanks to accomplish their mission. Their story is the subject of the book, “Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan” that was published in 2010. The members of ODA 595 were also featured in a 2017 documentary called “Legion of Brothers” and then came the Jerry Bruckheimer–produced film, “12 Strong” that was released in 2018. It starred Chris Hemsworth as Capt. Mitch Nelson, a character based on Mark Nutsch, and Michael Shannon as Hal Spencer, a character based on Bob Pennington. Mark and Bob along with Scott Neill and other Green Berets got back together and founded the American Freedom Distillery. Their flagship product is Horse Soldier Bourbon Whiskey. The Horse Soldier bottle features an image of a soldier mounted on a horse with glass molded in steel from the World Trade Center to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11. This documentary is their story and a look at the bourbon they created.
Juliette finds a rural route antenna, attempts to pump up the volume, speaks into an endless void, seduces farm folk, curls up under a console, dates a one-size-fits-all guy, looses her patience, answers a knock on her barn door, engages in a sordid caper, ignores the consequences, and appreciates the contrary... all while drinking Horse Soldier barrel proof bourbon from the American Freedom Distillery.
Scott Neil was one of the Green Berets sent into Afghanistan to take down the Taliban after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "On 19 October in 2001, two Special Forces teams went in on the North and that’s kind of what we know today from the movie and the statue at ground zero as the horse soldiers," said Neil. "They raised an unconventional militia army of horsemen and they started attacking the Taliban so much so that within 90 days, less than 90 green berets overtook Afghanistan," he added. Neil’s story was recreated for the Hollywood “12 Strong” (released in January, 2018). Now, the former Army Master Sergeant calls Tampa home. He started a new venture — creating his own bourbon. "We decided to make a little whiskey... make whiskey, not war is our tagline," said Neil. He says it’s important for he and fellow veterans have a chance to transition into another career after the military. For him, creating the American Freedom Distillery was perfect. American heroes, producing an American product, with an American story flowing through it. "For us, it was a way we could do both art and science and it was a way that we can make a product that truly reflects [who] we are," said Neil.
The FDA continues to miss the mark on regulations as the food they ok is bad for you but something all natural like a cigar is frowned upon, Canada is ruining cigar boxes and packaging, Gillette's newest ad for transgenders, and we speak with the guys from American Freedom Distillery ahead of their jump recreating the ones soldiers performed behind the beaches of Normandy for the 75th Anniversary celebrations this week.
On today’s show, Pat celebrates his 32nd birthday by looking ahead at what’s to come this next year, and reflects a little bit on the past. Pat also previews a massive opportunity presenting itself after some having some meetings with Westwood One, and he also addresses the Monday Night Football situation and his thoughts on the what is potentially next. Pat and the guys also talk about the Walmart by Pat’s house, and discuss his love for Applebee’s and the drastic deviation in their service from visit to visit. The guys also cover whether or not Jeopardy! is fixed with the current champion, wonder what Regis Philbin is up to, and try to decide how people in Hollywood manage to not age at all. For Throwback Thursday, stick around after the show for an incredible interview with Bob Pennington and Scott Neil, two of the original horse soldiers/Green Beret’s that the film “12 Strong,” starring Chris Hemsworth, was based on. They do a deep dive into their mission, describing a part of our world that very few humans know about, chat about what they thought of the film based on them, and discuss their new Horse Soldier Bourbon Whiskey from their new company American Freedom Distillery (1:14:08-2:18:18). It’s a good one, come and laugh with us. Cheers.

Florida Matters host Robin Sussingham recently moderated a community discussion about veteran entrepreneurs with professionals who've been working on training and educating former soldiers on skills they need, not only to integrate back into society, but to take on the risks and rewards of being an entrepreneur. The panel took place in front of a live audience at USF St. Petersburg, and we also took some questions from the audience. In this podcast, you'll hear about American Freedom Distillery and from one of its founders, former Green Beret Scott Neil. Support for Florida Matters More comes from the National Foundation for Transplants. Right now, hundreds of Tampa residents need an organ transplant they can not afford.
