But in today's economy, being a millionaire does not necessarily project the same status it once did. Or does it? In today's episode, being a millionaire ain’t what it used to be. It wasn't that long ago that Regis Philbin drew massive viewers with his TV program Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Never mind the fact that the top prize was $1 million before taxes, which is considerably less than $1 million after taxes. And while it's much more noticeable today, even during Y2K, being a millionaire did not give the same status that it once did. Yet it's an achievement many of us are shooting for. According to a new study, almost half of all workers (48 percent) have set $1 million as their retirement benchmark. That number was only 37 percent in 2024. But people aren't necessarily optimistic about reaching that milestone. In fact, a mere 27 percent actually expect to get there.[1] Another recent study provides more information on this. An analysis of government survey data done by Bloomberg indicates that there are more than 24 million millionaire households, or almost one in five. But a lot of that wealth is sealed into 401(k)s, IRAs and home equity, none of which is easily accessible. This is especially true for households in the lower end of the millionaire spectrum, with a net worth between $1 million and $2 million, which on average, have 66 percent of their wealth locked into these types of assets.[2] It’s important not to minimize what so many people have accomplished. $1 million is a great emotional milestone. And it's still a lot of money. The median household net worth is considerably less: about $193,000.[3] But nowadays, you might not be able to live off $1 million. It could end up lasting you a long time, but it all depends on where you live (which you can control), your health and longevity (which you might not be able to control), and how much you spend on things like housing, health care and other expenses. Every situation is different, of course. The cost of living varies widely throughout the United States. According to research by Forbes magazine, the average cost of living, defined as “housing costs, transportation, health care, food and income taxes,” is the highest in Hawaii at $55,491. Mississippi comes in the lowest with an average of $32,336. Of course, this is just for the essentials. The figures don't include entertainment, travel or anything else.[4] When it comes to longevity, average life expectancy has some quirks to it. For one thing, each year you age, your remaining life expectancy goes down, but not by a full year. This is a statistical oddity due to the fact that you're still here, but a few of your peers are not. For example, if you are a male age 60, your remaining life expectancy is 23.3 years, or to age 83.3. But if you make it to age 65, your new life expectancy is 19.3 years, or to age 84.3.[5] There are gender differences as well. For people age 65, females, on average, outlive males by approximately 2.7 years.[6] These are all just averages, of course. But the resulting life expectancies are often longer than people might anticipate. Here's another unique statistic: For a married couple age 60, there is approximately a 60 percent chance that at least one of the two will live past age 90.[7] That may or may not be you, but the longer you expect to live, the more concerned you will be about whether your $1 million is enough. How long will it last, and will you still be around when it runs out? Here are three hypotheticals compiled by SmartAsset. In the first one, assume you start with $1 million and get a 6 percent return. Also assume you are in a 24 percent tax bracket and you spend $5,000 per month. In that scenario, your $1 million should last you 30 years. But in the second scenario, assuming your return goes down to 5 percent, the well would run dry in 26 years. In the third scenario, your return goes up to 7 percent. But your tax bracket is also higher: 32 percent, and your withdrawal goes up to $6,000 per month. With those assumptions, your savings would only last 23 years.[8] Keep in mind that these examples do not include other sources of income such as Social Security. The maximum amount of Social Security you can collect is $5,181[9] per month before tax and Medicare charges, but that assumes you paid in the maximum and collect at age 70, which less than 10 percent of people do.[10] The average benefit is approximately $1,959 per month.[11] But when it comes to retirement income, the one huge advantage Social Security has is that it is indexed for inflation, although the Cost of Living Adjustment (or COLA) increases don't always keep up. So, how much you can accumulate for retirement is important, but it's not everything. Perhaps some of us are focusing on the wrong thing. Maybe it's just as important to have an income plan as it is to have an accumulation plan.[12] In other words, no matter how much you save, it's still only the first half of the journey. Grab your best duds, we're hopping in the Time Machine for Las Vegas in the 1950s to catch up with The Rat Pack -- or at least the comic relief -- in the form of Joey Bishop who was a presence in Vegas showrooms, in movies, and on television well into the 1980s. A product of the New York nightclub scene, where Frank Sinatra caught and liked his act, Joey was Frank's opener for years and when Sinatra took the helm of the Rat Pack, he brought Joey along for the ride. That association would end in the early 1960s, but Joey remained a celebrity and hosted his own ABC late night talk show in the mid-60s. A deadpan comic, Joey later became a frequent game show panelist, as well as a talk show guest host. On this week's motivation Monday, we're talking to Michael Gelman.  When Michael Gelman helped create one of the most popular New York morning shows in 1987 and orchestrate its transition to a national ratings powerhouse a year later, he became the youngest producer of a national talk show. Today, as executive producer of “Live,” he has the longest tenure at the helm of any of the top syndicated shows. Since its inception “Live” has enlivened morning television with its hilarious Host Chat and A-list celebrity guests. Now in its 35th season in national syndication, “Live” remains a stronghold in daytime television, continuing to entertain viewers nationwide. As executive producer, Gelman is responsible for virtually every aspect of the show. He is well known for his audience warm-ups and regularly appears on-set, complementing the daily Host Chat segment. Gelman first joined “Live” as a freelance production assistant on what was then known as “The Morning Show.” Soon after, he was hired as a staff production assistant and later named associate producer, working in that role for two years. He left the show to pursue freelance opportunities and produced original “Live” host Regis Philbin's highly-rated primetime variety program. “The Regis Philbin Show,” which aired on Lifetime. In 1987, Gelman returned to “The Morning Show” as executive producer. “In general, magazine profiles are to biographies as inland lakes are to oceans,” writes the late entertainment journalist and ghostwriter Bill Zehme in The New York Times best-selling Carson the Magnificent. “Far less sprawling and easier to navigate.”   This is true—and readers need look no further than Zehme's latest (and last) book, completed posthumously, for confirmation. Zehme, who collaborated on memoirs with Jay Leno and Regis Philbin and was a frequent contributor to Esquire, Rolling Stone, Playboy, and Vanity Fair, worked on his Carson biography for over a decade, before a cancer diagnosis and ongoing treatments halted his progress. In 1988, Phil had just moved to Los Angeles. And he was in a tough spot. At the time he had no job and very little money. So he was trying to come up with some kind of plan that could save him from being homeless. Since he had pretty vast knowledge in lots of different subject areas, he decided that he would try his hand at going on the TV game show, Jeopardy! He had to pass an initial test, which he did, then he went to the contestant interview, and he passed that as well. And he actually got on the show. It didn't solve his money problems though – even though he did well, he lost to a 5-time champion – by two dollars. Rather than earning any actual money, his parting gift was a bedroom set which forever became known as the Jeopardy! bed. But twelve years later, he decided to try again, on a different show. In the year 2000, he was able to get on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, which at the time was hosted by Regis Philbin. This game show experience was very different. Today on the show we have a living legend—Kathie Lee Gifford is here to talk about her faith and, listeners, you know I love to talk to guests about their faith. Kathie Lee has written a really compelling new book that juxtaposes the story of evil personified in King Herod with the living hope of Jesus told through the story of his mother, Mary. Kathie Lee writes in her new book Herod and Mary: The True Story of the Tyrant King and the Mother of the Risen Savior, which is out July 16, that she has been completely fascinated by the historical figure of Herod the Great since she went on a trip to the Holy Land back in 2012. Herod was Christianity's first true persecutor, and was a tyrannical ruler; Kathie Lee writes that Herod's story is the greatest story never told. This book is a historical narrative that reads like a modern-day thriller and is really not your typical nonfiction book—it reads like a novel, but it's all true. In addition to the juxtaposition between Herod and Mary, there's another juxtaposition in the book, which is the contrast between a king like Herod, with all his privileges, and then someone like Jesus, the King of the world, who was born in an animal pen. At the end of the book, Kathie Lee includes codas of really interesting conversations between her and her collaborator, Dr. Bryan Litfin, basically unpacking the book and talking readers through it. In those codas, she really vulnerably and bravely reveals some very personal details about her own life that helped me get to know her better and respect her even more. There's no way you don't know who Kathie Lee Gifford is, but just in case you don't, she co-hosted Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee alongside Regis Philbin from 1985 to 2000, and also had an 11-year run with Hoda Kotb on the fourth hour of Today from 2008 to 2019. Kathie Lee has received 11 Daytime Emmy nominations and won her first Daytime Emmy in 2010 with Today. She has also served as an NBC News correspondent and got her start on Name That Tune back in 1978. She married sportscaster and former NFL player Frank Gifford in 1986, and he passed away in 2015; they share two children. In addition to her broadcasting career, Kathie Lee has released multiple albums and multiple books, including books about her faith, cooking, children's books, and biographical books, like 2018's The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi and 2020's It's Never Too Late: Make the Next Act of Your Life the Best Act of Your Life.
