Tonight's guest is Rob Newson, a former Navy SEAL officer with nearly 30 years of military service.  On this episode, Rob and I discuss the highlights of his remarkable military career, as well as the important work he is doing with cancer and leading the fight alongside incredible organizations such as Task Force Dagger and Hunter Seven Foundation.  If you are searching for insight about military start-ups, this is the episode for you. Rob has personally led or participated within six separate new military organizations, including two national strategic planning elements, and a first-of-its-kind organization to collect and integrate battlefield intelligence to identify and disable terrorist networks. In a three year period, this new team elevated the success rate of SEAL missions from 35% to 91%. We dive into the gamut of Naval Special Warfare history across the Global War on Terror, including the establishment of SEAL Team 7 and why all veterans of that team owe Rob a green beer for putting the commissioning date on St. Paddy's Day. We also cover the reasoning for the creation of the Cultural Engagement Units, which relied heavily on the MAVNI program; and various other topics such as women in combat, SEALs in media, and working at the White House.

This includes financial, emotional, and medical support, as well as guidance on giving back to those who have sacrificed for their country. TFD also hosts retreats, like the one Sara is currently on, that bring families together by forcing them to overcome obstacles and strengthening communication skills. Razor 03: A Night Stalker's Wars by Alan C. Mack https://amzn.to/41uJ5sb “A truly extraordinary book by a phenomenal pilot and warrior. Alan Mack was in the thick of every sensitive, harrowing, high-stakes operation in the decade following 9/11. His account of combat from the cockpit of the world's most exceptional special ops aviation unit and of the toll it took on him and his family is forthright, riveting, raw, compelling, and inspirational. Readers will not be able to put Razor 3 down.” -General David H. Petraeus, US Army (Ret.), former Commander of the Surge in Iraq, US Central Command, and Coalition Forces in Afghanistan, and former Director of the CIAFinalist, 2022 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Awards The attacks of September 11, 2001, prompted the creation of a robust and deadly special operations force -- Task Force Dagger. Alan C. Mack, Callsign Razor 03, led a team of MH-47E helicopters and armed MH-60s. Their two-fold mission – Personnel Recovery (PR) and Unconventional Warfare (UW) involved flying in terrain and weather previously not thought possible. If that wasn't enough, they pushed the flight envelope of their specially modified Chinooks to the limit and beyond. Mack shares his behind-the-scenes perspective of the Horse Soldier's infill into Afghanistan. He discusses the hunt for Osama Bin Laden at Tora Bora and describes his shootdown during Operation Anaconda. Years later, he chased Bowe Bergdahl, rescued hostages in Iraq, and the U.S. Navy Seal ‘Lone Survivor' from the Kunar Valley. Mack's near-death experiences and frequent deployments not only affected him, but pushed his wife toward prescription opioids. Her developing addiction led to friction as he kept her secret and continued to deploy. He lived by his unit's motto, Night Stalkers Don't Quit! He wouldn't quit on his unit – he couldn't quit on his family. His story of success, tragedy, and ultimate happiness is as old as warfare itself. About the Author CW5 ALAN C. MACK retired from the Army as a Master Aviator. He served over 35 years in the Army, first as an aircraft mechanic then as a pilot. He flew CH-47s in support of Operations Desert Shield and Storm. Additionally, he spent 17 years flying MH-47 Chinooks with the 160th SOAR. As a Night Stalker Flight Lead, he participated in Operations Desert Thunder, Desert Fox, Enduring, and Iraqi Freedom. His awards include the Legion of Merit, 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 10 Air medals – 1 with ‘V,' and a Combat Action Badge. Alan finished his career as Commander of the West Point Flight Detachment. Now he and his wife Patti live happily in New York's Hudson Valley.

In his twenties when he was supposed to be living his best life, his body was breaking down at an exponential rate that was unexplained by medical science, which was the cause of him giving up (at least temporarily) his childhood dream of being a commando, when he left the Navy abruptly. Fast forward to a 4 year chase to restart the dream of serving his country, many rejections , and a email that was given to him out of spite , this guest resumed the goal of being a special operator. Now over 20 years, 7 deployments, and having served as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, Intelligence Sergeant, and Operations Sergeant my guest has become one of the most experienced veteran advocates, educator, and Green Beret that is still serving his country. He is a Human Performance and Wellness Senior Leader, the Founder of the META transition program, and the Founding director of the SOF Health Initiatives Program. Please welcome a guest that has been in the works for a long time Geoffrey Dardia.

Geoff Dardia couldn't have been a better guest to have on this week. I realized, after the episode, that we had recorded it on the one-year anniversary of the show. Sure, we had a lot to talk about – Ukraine, the Afghan withdrawl, the state of military readiness in the event of war in Europe…or the South China Sea, the intersection of our kids and military service, but it was great to have Geoff on to discuss since he is exactly the kind of guest that makes Profiles in Havok (and the old Weekly Havok) so popular. In fact, Geoff's other appearance on the show was on Weekly Havok, so I'm glad we could officially record his “profile”. If you don't remember Geoff from his previous appearance… Master Sergeant Geoffrey P Dardia is a career Special Forces soldier who helped stand up, and currently serves as the Operations Sergeant for 3rd Special Forces Group's Human Performance and Wellness Program. MSG Dardia is also the founder and Program Director for 3rd Special Forces Group's META (Medical, Education, Transition, Advocacy/Awareness) Transition Program.  MSG Dardia served in both the Central Command (CENTCOM) and US Africa Command (AFRICOM) areas of operation as a Special Forces advisor, and as a liaison at the US Embassy in Burkina Faso. MSG Dardia is also a Veteran's Affairs Certified Recovery Care Coordinator (RCC) and served as the Ft Bragg Wounded Warrior Battalion Liaison for United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).As the Operation's Sergeant for 3rd Special Forces Group's Human Performance Program, MSG Dardia oversees, and is part of, a multidisciplinary team consisting of Group Medical, Preservation of The Force and Family (POTFF), Behavioral Health, Tactical Human Optimization Rapid Rehabilitation and Reconditioning (THOR3) and the Chaplain's Office. 3rd Special Forces Group's Human Performance program works tirelessly “to prevent and mitigate performance degrading factors across the physiological, psychological and emotional domains in order to optimize readiness and tactical performance, maximize career longevity, and preserve the soldier and family.”MSG Geoffrey Dardia also founded and directed the Special Operations Forces (SOF) Health Initiative Program for Task Force Dagger Special Operations Foundation where he created a pipeline that has directly assisted hundreds of wounded, ill and injured SOF members and their families. In the SOF Health Initiative program, service members, veterans and their families receive the most comprehensive, and state of the art medical care available. The SOF Health Initiative Program provides access to and awareness of personalized, functional medicine approaches that deliver lifestyle, integrative, and nutritional interventions that address the root causes of dysfunction in the SOF community. The SOF Initiative program educates and empowers service members, veterans and their families to take ownership of their health and actions and to work as force multipliers/ambassadors to create a healthier and more resilient community.MSG Geoffrey Dardia works around the clock both as an active duty soldier and as a veteran advocate (trusted agent), public speaker and as guest writer for the Havok Journal where he educates and empowers people from all walks to take ownership of their health. MSG Dardia is a frequent guest on several military and health related podcasts and has also been featured in high visibility publications such as the New York Times, Army Times, Military Times, and Experience Life Magazine. MSG Dardia cowrote and published his first scientific paper in 2019 in the Alternate Therapies in Health and Medicine (ATHM) Journal titled “Neurotoxicity Associated with Traumatic Brain Injury, Blast, Chemical, Heavy Metal and Quinoline Drug Exposure.”So clearly, Geoff has nothing to say. “As for me, after seeing what I've seen, I'm always gonna bet on freedom to win out in the end.” Episode 048 is the first in a series of episodes on Afghanistan. Former Green Beret and Ranger Battalion Sniper Aaron Hand joins Jason and Rich to talk about his late night FB post on his current feelings and outlook -- which Jason reads to start the podcast -- as well as his time in country, the current situation of withdrawal, historical parallels, the taste of freedom and reasons to have hope for the future.  Aaron grew up in Boston, enlisted in the Army infantry in 1992, and was eventually stationed in the 3/75 at Fort Benning as a sniper. He deployed to Somalia in 1993 and was part of the vehicle convoy there that became known as Blackhawk Down. He then went through Special Forces Qualification and was at Fort Campbell in “The Legion” of 5th SF Group on 9/11. He, with ODA 543, was one of the first soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan as part of Task Force Dagger and the larger Operation Enduring Freedom in late 2001.  Aaron provides historical context to the current situation in Afghanistan -- both from his time served there as well as the time before. Rich (also a member of The Legion) was in Afghanistan in the 1980's, notably in “Charlie Wilson's War” carrying stinger missiles to the mujahideen. Before that, Rich was also on a special forces team who evacuated people during the fall of Saigon in the mid 70s and talks through the comparisons to those events. Throughout, there is measured, important conversation for both the average American citizen trying to understand what is going on, as well as veterans who might have strong feelings about current events -- particularly in the lead up to the 20th anniversary of 9/11.   Links: Episode 038 - Rich on “Charlie Wilson's War”  Rich Introduction and history in Vietnam - Episode 003 Learn more about GORUCK Glorious Professionals podcast website

Among other commanding roles, Colonel Rosengard served as the director of Task Force Dagger, the Special Forces unit and first American element in Afghanistan after 9/11. Colonel Rosengard was also the group deputy commander for 10th SFG and served in a number of countries. He finished his military career as chief of staff of SOCCENT.  Colonel Rosengard talks about the first days in Afghanistan post-9/11 and how, despite a multitude of challenges, Task Force Dagger succeeded in its mission.  He discusses the efforts to gain the trust of local warlords against the Taliban and how the American Special Forces had to negotiate and tread the differing and shifting allegiances of local and regional groups. All the while Task Force Dagger was hampered by a lack of intelligence and the technological limitations of the era, but received the support of a number of Afghans. Finally, Colonel Rosengard explains the difference between federal security and local autonomy and how the U.S. failed in understanding the importance of the latter for the Afghans. A better understanding of local autonomy could possibly have led to a stabler and safer Afghanistan both for the locals and the U.S. Tune in to another episode of SOFREP Radio and discover what America's finest faced to protect our way of life immediately after 9/11. Just days after the 9/11 attacks, several teams of Green Berets were inserted into Afghanistan to liberate the region from the Taliban in a mission known as Task Force Dagger. One of those teams, Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) 595, had to rely on horses instead of trucks and tanks to accomplish their mission. Their story is the subject of the book, “Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan” that was published in 2010. The members of ODA 595 were also featured in a 2017 documentary called “Legion of Brothers” and then came the Jerry Bruckheimer–produced film, “12 Strong” that was released in 2018. It starred Chris Hemsworth as Capt. Mitch Nelson, a character based on Mark Nutsch, and Michael Shannon as Hal Spencer, a character based on Bob Pennington. Mark and Bob along with Scott Neill and other Green Berets got back together and founded the American Freedom Distillery. Their flagship product is Horse Soldier Bourbon Whiskey. The Horse Soldier bottle features an image of a soldier mounted on a horse with glass molded in steel from the World Trade Center to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11. This documentary is their story and a look at the bourbon they created.

Someone has to be the first. When the U.S. military enters an international conflict, some soldier has to be the first to lead his unit into combat. That soldier is like the tip of a dagger, bravely entering a life and death conflict. Today we'll learn the remarkable story of a young Kansas man who served his nation in this amazing way. Mark Nutsch is the former commander of the first Green Beret unit which went in to Afghanistan after the bombing of 9-11. His harrowing and heroic true story would become a major motion picture. Mark Nutsch grew up near Washington, Kansas. Today his family farms in Wabaunsee County near the rural community of Alma, population 783 people. Now, that's rural.  Mark came to K-State where he joined the college rodeo team. After graduating from K-State, he joined the U.S. Army and became an officer in the special forces. He was captain of a unit called Operational Detachment-Alpha 595 and led missions to Uzbekistan and Kuwait. In early September 2001, he joined the battalion staff. Then came Sept. 11, 2001. Terrorists hijacked planes and crashed them into New York's Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Like many people, Mark Nutsch watched it happen and tried to make sense of it all. He was with his six-month-pregnant wife and their two young children at the time. The U.S. military immediately began planning a response. It was called Task Force Dagger. Captain Mark Nutsch was reunited with his unit. They would ultimately be designated to be the first to go fight the Taliban.  Mark Nutsch's 12-man unit was an experienced, mature crew. “We averaged 32 years old, had eight years' experience, and most of us were married with two kids,” Mark said. The unit faced the tallest of odds. They would be outgunned and outnumbered 40-to-one, in unfamiliar enemy territory with uncertain allies.  On Oct. 19, 2001, Mark and his unit were helicoptered into Uzbekistan. There they connected with local Muslim soldiers who also opposed the Taliban. They began the campaign to retake Afghanistan. But instead of jeeps or tanks, the local Afghan fighters used an unexpected type of transportation: Horses. Fortunately, farmboy Mark Nutsch knew his way around horses. He gave some quick riding lessons to his fellow soldiers. K-State President Richard Myers, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recalled receiving the unprecedented request to airlift saddles, saddle blankets and hay to the site. The military did so. The Afghan and American fighters would eventually go through the desert and mountains on horseback to accomplish their mission. Against the odds, all 12 men in Mark Nutsch's unit survived. Operation Enduring Freedom ended with the overthrow of the Taliban, as jubilant Afghans celebrated in the streets.  This amazing story was recounted in a best-selling book named Horse Soldiers. After the files were declassified, the story was made into a movie named 12 Strong. Mark Nutsch's character, named Captain Mitch Nelson in the movie, is portrayed in the show by actor Chris Hemsworth who also plays Thor in the Avenger series. In real life, Mark Nutsch received a Bronze Star with valor for his courage and leadership. He is now a consultant for Army Special Operations and has opened a whiskey distillery business. He also remains supportive of his family and the Flint Hills of Kansas. Mark was recently named by the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation as National Honorary Campaign Chair for the Foundation's Next Vistas fundraising campaign to benefit the Flint Hills Discovery Center. For more information, see www.flinthillsdiscovery.org/foundation. Someone has to be first. Some soldier has to be the first one to lead his unit into battle on behalf of his nation. In the aftermath of 9-11, it was Captain Mark Nutsch from rural Kansas who led his team on that initial mission. Now he is continuing to serve his state and nation as a volunteer with the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation. We commend Mark Nutsch and all soldiers, families and veterans who are making a difference with their service. I appreciate these brave young men and women who are putting duty first.

This Memorial Day weekend show will be very unusual and I believe truly inspiring. I will interview a decorated American hero, John Wayne Walding. That he went through the grueling training to become a Green Beret is just the beginning of his journey. Then he and just 11 comrades were involved in a horrific battle with 250 enemies! That episode alone was so incredible that a book was written about it. (I wouldn’t be surprised to see it as a movie). Losing his leg in that fire fight started a new chapter where I think the real inspiration is. He continued in the service and competed successfully in marathons. His newest endeavor is a business to employ veterans, Gallantry Global Logistics. I hope you will join me in honoring those service members and families who have sacrificed so much. Want to help? Here are organizations he believes are doing good work: Task Force Dagger. Green Beret Foundation. American Valor Foundation. Warriors Weekend.

Traumatic brain injury raises the risk of Alzheimer's by up to ten times the normal risk.  Today we want to share the story of a real American hero. United States Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, Josh Lindstrom. Josh was awarded a Purple Heart for surviving an IED attack in 2012. His story speaks for itself, but briefly, until 2012 Josh was one of the military's most fit, dedicated and resilient soldiers. After a traumatic brain injury he lost more than his cognitive abilities. He lost his identity, he lost his relationship with his family and struggled to figure out his "Why" for the rest of his life.    Overall, Josh employed a Functional Medicine/root cause strategy and found the following interventions most impactful in his case. a elimination then Ketogenic diet testosterone replacement therapy military adaptive sports training   if you would like to contribute to the healing of men and women like Josh please consider a donation to the Task Force Dagger Foundation. This is an extremely worthy cause.

We respond to urgent needs, conduct Recreational Therapy Adaptive Events, and provide next-generation health solutions for issues facing our service members. We are a rally point to combat Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), and environmental exposures. Our cohesive programs enable families to seize the moment and live life. Why the Task Force Dagger Name? Task Force Dagger was the designation of the Special Forces elements that conducted the initial invasion into Afghanistan following the terrorist attack on the United States on September 11th, 2001. Task Force Dagger was comprised of elements from the US Army Special Operations Command (SOCOM). For more than forty years, SOCOM units have been the tip of the spear in defending and protecting the United States. These warriors live in the shadows protecting the American way of life. Living by the motto of "The Quiet Professionals," these soldiers deploy around the world working to keep Americans safe while keeping their presence unknown but to a few. Activated on December 1st, 1989, USASOC is comprised of the following units: US Army Special Forces, US Army Rangers, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, US Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School, 95th Civil Affairs Brigade, Sustainment Brigade (Special Operations), and the 4th Psychological Operations Group.
