On this episode of The Hillsdale College Online Courses Podcast, Jeremiah Regan and professor emeritus of art Sam Knecht introduce the course "American Paintings." Great artists perceive something that is difficult to capture and portray it with a beauty that makes it easier for us to grasp. These American paintings present the American character and make us proud to be Americans. This course explores inspiring portraits of statesmen, cherished images of common citizens, breathtaking landscapes of the American countryside, the hidden beauty of America’s city streets, and harrowing but fortifying glimpses of battle. American art is characterized by honesty. These artists attempt to balance a faithful replica of reality with a depiction of the ideal we seek. The color, light, and movement captured in brushstrokes on canvas provide a unique glimpse of the American character. The American patriots depicted in these paintings, from our Founding Fathers through our more recent statesmen, inspire us to live up to the principles and promise of America.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Once an archetype has been constructed, it's really difficult to dismantle it. And one of the prevailing archetypes of the 20th century was that of the American Hero. From World War II to the genre of the Western, the idea of the Great American as someone principled but reluctant to intervene, with a complicated past but a good heart, and setting right a problem not of his own doing is firmly ingrained in our culture. But what is more worthwhile: tearing down the idea of "greatness" in a complicated figure like Abraham Lincoln or doing away with heroes altogether? Jessa and Nico discuss how difficult it is to critique an archetype and why propaganda works. Shownotes and references: http://theculturewedeserve.substack.com

In this episode, we’re diving deep into the latest trending topics shaking up the culture. Rapper Slim Thugg is making waves with his controversial statement that Black men are the most desirable and that Black women should be “easier†when it comes to sex. Is he speaking facts, or is this just another example of misguided thinking? We also take a look at the latest honors for Black Americans, as Trump’s proposed “American Heroes†statue garden includes notable figures—who made the list, and is this a genuine acknowledgment or political maneuvering? Next, we revisit the heartbreaking story of a Detroit mother who lost two children to freezing temperatures. Social media is in an uproar after a video surfaced of her partying and twerking. Is this a case of grief expressing itself differently, or is the backlash justified? Then, we’re breaking down the latest viral phenomenon—Trendy Trauma. Raquel Hopkins has sparked a conversation about how trauma is being glorified online. Are we normalizing pain for clout, or is this just people expressing their struggles in a new way? Finally, we discuss the USDA’s shocking decision to suspend the 1890 Scholars Program for HBCU students. What does this mean for Black farmers and future agricultural leaders? Plus, an update on the USDA releasing $20 million in frozen farmer funds—what’s really going on behind the scenes? There’s a lot to unpack, and we’re not holding back! Drop your thoughts in the comments, like, share, and subscribe for more unfiltered discussions. Let’s clean up the culture!

Sharon McMahon, America's favorite government teacher and bestselling author of "The Small and the Mighty." shares how she went from a classroom government teacher to a social media success with over a million followers on Instagram. Once you hear this episode you will understand why Shaon's nonpartisan videos on the electoral college and other political processes captured the hearts and attention of her followers and mass media. You may not know that there is currently a lack of standardized civic education across the United States. Each state decides how much time to allocate within their schools to teach about US Government and Civics. Yes, read that again and stop for a minute to consider the consequences of inconsistent and insufficient government education for American students. If students are not taught how to make change locally, statewide or nationally, or that their vote and participation matters, perhaps that explains a lot including why so many of us complain that the system is not representing us? We talk about Sharon's brilliant book, "The Small and the Mighty," which profiles twelve unsung American heroes who made extraordinary impacts on history. One of the heroes is Clara Brown, an enslaved woman who became a pioneer in Colorado, through sacrifice, faith and decades of hard work. We also discuss the current election and why the majority of Americans feel they are not represented by either candidate. Sharon offers suggestions for electoral reforms and a multi-party system that would drastically change election outcomes. Sharon recommends FairVote, an organization working to improve election systems at the state level. Do not miss this episode that will challenge you to think critically about your role in democracy and we guarantee will inspire you to get poltically engaged in what matters most to you.
